No Path in Darjeeling Is Straight: Memories of a Hill Town

For a few years in the early 1990s—at a time when the embers of a violent agitation for Gorkhaland were slowly dying down—Parimal Bhattacharya taught at the Government College in Darjeeling.  No Path in Darjeeling Is Straight  is a memory of his time in the iconic town, and one of the finest works of Indian non-fiction in recent years.  Parimal evocatively describes his arrival, through drizzle and impenetrable fog, at a place that was at odds with the grand picture of it he had painted for himself. And his first night there was spent sleepless in a ramshackle hotel above a butcher’s shop. Yet, as he tramped its roads and winding footpaths, Darjeeling grew on him. He sought out its a land of incomparable beauty originally inhabited by the Lepchas and other tribes; the British who took it for themselves in the mid-1800s so they could remember home; the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway—once a vital artery, now a quaint toy train—built in 1881; and the vast tea gardens with which the British replaced verdant forests to produce the fabled Orange Pekoe.  In the enmeshed lives of his neighbours—of various castes, tribes, religions and cultures—lived at the measured pace of a small town, Parimal discovered a richly cosmopolitan society which endured even under threat from cynical politics and haphazard urbanization. He also found new Benson, a colleague whose death from AIDS showed him the dark underbelly of the hill station; Pratap and Newton, whose homes and lives reflected the irreconcilable pulls of tradition and upward mobility; and Julia and Hemant, with whom he trekked the forests of the Singalila mountains in search of a vanished Lepcha village and a salamander long thought extinct.  With empathy, and in shimmering prose,  No Path in Darjeeling Is Straight  effortlessly merges travel, history, literature, memory, politics and the pleasures of ennui into an unforgettable portrait of a place and its people.

"পাহাড়ের মানুষ মানেই সরল (পড়ুন : বুদ্ধিহীন), আবেগপ্রবণ (পড়ুন : রগচটা), সাদাসিধে (পড়ুন : অল্পে খুশি) ও অনুগত (পড়ুন : প্রশ্ন করে না, সহজে বশ্য, গৃহপালিত পশুর মতো) ধারণাগুলো শাসকের মতো, প্রতিবেশীর মতো নয়। "


পড়লাম দার্জিলিং এর ইতিহাস কিন্তু সারাক্ষণ আমার চোখের সামনে ভেসে রইলো পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম। ২০২৩ এর ডিসেম্বরে জীবনে প্রথমবার রাঙামাটি গিয়েছি। প্রথমেই কাপ্তাই লেকে ভ্রমণ। অনিক বলছিলো, এখানে গ্রাম ছিলো, মূলত চাকমাদের, তাদের প্রায় ৫৪ হাজার একর জমি* লেক বানানোর স্বার্থে পানির নিচে তলিয়ে গেছে। আমি বাংলাদেশের মানুষ, অথচ এই নির্মম ও করুণ ইতিহাসের কিছুই আমি জানতাম না।প্রায় এক লক্ষ মানুষ দেশান্তরিত হয়েছিলো বাধ্য হয়ে। বহু মানুষ স্বজন হারিয়েছে, সমৃদ্ধ কৃষক পরিণত হয়েছে কপর্দকশূন্য গরিব মানুষে। তাদের লোভ দেখানো হয়েছিলো ইলেক্ট্রিসিটির, কিন্তু সারাদেশে কাপ্তাই জলবিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্র থেকে বিদ্যুৎ সরবরাহ করা হলেও ঠিকভাবে পায়নি পার্বত্য অঞ্চলের মানুষ। সামরিক বাহিনী ও বাঙালি সেটলার কর্তৃক প্রতিনিয়ত অত্যাচার তো আছেই। অথচ যে কোনো সাধারণ বাঙালিকে রাঙামাটি, খাগড়াছড়ির কথা জিজ্ঞেস করলে তাদের চোখের সামনে ভেসে ওঠে লোভনীয় ও দর্শনীয় এক পর্যটন কেন্দ্র (সাজেকে একবার না যেতে পারলে তো জীবন বৃথা!) ওখানকার আদিবাসীদের ঘরবাড়ি ও তারা নিজেরাও দর্শনীয় বস্তু। পাহাড়ের মানুষদের দুঃখ, শ্রম, বঞ্চনা কিছুই আমাদের চোখে পড়তে চায় না।

তো, দীর্ঘ গৌরচন্দ্রিকা দিয়ে "দার্জিলিং : স্মৃতি সমাজ ইতিহাস" এ ফিরে আসা যাক। দার্জিলিং এর চোখজুড়ানো, ভুবনবিখ্যাত প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্য, কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘার চূড়া দেখে বিমোহিত হতে যায় পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মানুষ। দার্জিলিংয়ে যেয়ে তারা সবই দ্যাখে, শুধু স্থানীয় মানুষজনের দিকে তারা তাকানোর প্রয়োজন বোধ করে না। লেপচা বা ভুটিয়াদের দীর্ঘ রক্তাক্ত ইতিহাস, গোর্খাল্যান্ড নিয়ে গড়ে ওঠা আন্দোলন, বৈরী পরিবেশে যুদ্ধ করে টিকে থাকার  কথা বাঙালিরা শুনতে চায় না। দার্জিলিং শুধুই পিকচার পারফেক্ট ট্যুরিস্ট স্পট। 

পরিমল ভট্টাচার্য আলাদা করে কোনো ট্র‍্যাজেডির কথা লেখেননি, কিন্তু দার্জিলিংয়ের সাধারণ ইতিহাস পড়েই শরীর হিম হয়ে আসে। কাঁটাতারের এপারে পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম, ওপারে দার্জিলিং -একই বঞ্চনার ক্লান্তিকর পুনরাবৃত্তি। কোনোদিন কি ঝা চকচকে পর্যটন কেন্দ্রের মোহ পেরিয়ে এসব জায়গার মানুষদের চোখের অশ্রু আর হাহাকার আমাদের চক্ষুকর্ণে প্রবেশ করবে?

আমার মতো সমতলের মানুষদের কাছে দার্জিলিং স্রেফ একটি শৈলশহরের নাম। দার্জিলিং তো যেকোনো হেঁজিপেজি শৈলশহর নয়, ইংরেজরা একে আদর করে ডাকতো “The Queen of Hill-stations” নামে। পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাঙালিদের কাছে আরো গর্বের ব্যাপার হলো দার্জিলিং আমাদেরই রাজ্যে অবস্থিত। হাতে যদি দিন-তিনেকের ছুটি পাওয়া যায়, ছাপোষা বাঙালি তিনটে জায়গায় দৌড়ে যায়। দীঘার সমুদ্রসৈকত, শান্তিনিকেতন, অথবা দার্জিলিং। কিন্তু একদা যে-শৈলশহরটি ছিল পাহাড়ের রানি, সেই রানি আজ কাঙাল হয়ে গেছে। রাজনৈতিক কিংবা আর্থ-সামাজিক, যে দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি থেকেই দেখা হোক না ক্যানো, অধুনা একটি দীর্ঘশ্বাসের নাম দার্জিলিং।

লেখক প্রথম দার্জিলিঙে যান কর্মসূত্রে। নিবিড় কুয়াশাঘেরা এবং স্মৃতির মলিন জলরঙে আঁকা এই শহরটিকে আপন করে নেন ধীরে ধীরে। সাধারণ বাঙালি ট্যুরিস্টের আদিখ্যেতা-মার্কা নজরের বাইরে একটা আলাদা নজরে এই শহরকে দেখতে শুরু করেন। যে শহরকে আমরা ভালোবাসি সেই শহরের সমস্যাগুলো আমরা এড়িয়ে যাই না। সেই শহরের মানুষদের আমরা “ইউজ অ্যান্ড থ্রো” হিসেবে ব্যবহার করি না। তাদের সঙ্গে মেলামেশা করি, তাদের সুখ-দুঃখ-স্বপ্ন-স্বপ্নভঙ্গের দিনলিপির সঙ্গে পরিচিত হই। এক অনবদ্য মুনশিয়ানায়, আন্তরিকতায়, অভিনিবেশে, লেখক এই বিরল কাজটি করেছেন। শুধু নস্টালজিয়ার রঙিন চশমাটি নাকে ঝুলিয়ে রাখেননি, হাতে রেখেছেন আরো দুটো জিনিস। একটা আয়না আর একটা আতসকাচ।

কীভাবে একটি শহর হয়ে যায় মানুষের অন্ধ ফুর্তিবাজির শিকার। কীভাবে একটি শহর হয়ে যায় ভোট-রাজনীতির ক্রমিক ক্রীড়নক। কীভাবে একটি গোটা শহরের মানুষ হয়ে যান বহিরাগত ফুর্তিবাজদের একনিষ্ঠ চাকরবাকর। কীভাবে একটি শহরের রমণীয় সৌন্দর্যের আড়ালে লুকিয়ে থাকে আত্মপরিচয়হীন অস্তিত্বের তীব্র যন্ত্রণা। কীভাবে একটি প্রজাপতির অতীত ইতিহাসজুড়ে লেখা থাকে কেবল শুঁয়োপোকার কুৎসিত দংশন। আমরা যারা একবারের জন্যেও দার্জিলিঙে গেছি, পরিমল ভট্টাচার্যের এই হতশ্রী দার্জিলিংকে কিন্তু কমবেশি আমরা সবাই চিনি। কিন্তু ফুর্তির নেশায় অন্যদিকে চোখ ঘুরিয়ে ছিলাম। সূর্যোদয়ের মনভোলানো কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘার রূপ দেখে হুল্লোড়ে মেতে ছিলাম, তাই আপামর শহরটার ক্ষীণ কান্নার শব্দ আমাদের কানে এসে পৌঁছায়নি। লেখক আমাদের চোখ আর কান দুটোই খুলে দিয়েছেন। কিছু কিছু বই অতর্কিতে হানা দ্যায় পাঠকের সুসজ্জিত চেতনায়। এটি তেমনই একটি বই।

দার্জিলিংয়ের অখ্যাত, ছোট 'টুইয়া' নামক গ্রামে প্রতাপ লামার খুড়তুতো ভাই রুপনের কন্ঠে হ্যারি বেলা ফোন্টের গাওয়া "জ্যামাইকা ফেয়ারওয়েল" গানটা শুনছেন লেখক। কাঠের বারান্দায় বসে দূর পাহাড়ের দিকে তাকিয়ে গিটারের টুংটাং শব্দসহযোগে এই সুর লেখকের সাথে আমাকেও যেন নিয়ে গেলো টুইয়া গ্রামে। আমারো মনে হলো আগে পরে বহুবার শুনলেও এ গানটা যেন দার্জিলিং বসে শোনার জন্যেই গাওয়া হয়েছিল।

"But I'm sad to say I'm on my way
Won't be back for many a day
My heart is down
My head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town"

তুলোর মতো ভেসে যেতে থাকা মেঘগুলো কি কিংসটন টাউনে ফেলে আসা বালিকার দিকেই ছুটে যাচ্ছিল?
সঠিক তথ্য বের করা বেশ শক্ত কাজ, বলা যায় অসম্ভব। আমরা ধরে নিতে পারি মেঘগুলোর গন্তব্য কিংসটন টাউনই ছিল, তাতে ক্ষতি কিছু নেই।

অদেখা স্বর্গের যতরকম গুণাবলি বলা হয়ে আসছে শতবছর ধরে তার সবকিছুর দেখা মেলে দার্জিলিংয়ে। ছেড়া পালকের মতো উড়ে বেড়ানো সাদা মেঘের নিচে মাথা উঁচু করে দাঁড়ানো সবুজ টিলা, পাহাড়ের নৈসর্গিক চিত্রপটের পিছে আরো একটা ছবি আছে; সে ছবির রঙ লাল আর খয়েরী মেশানো। এ ছবি এখানকার মানুষের সংগ্রাম ও রক্ত ঝরানো ইতিহাস বুকে ধারণ করে আছে, যদিও তা আড়ালে থেকে যায় দার্জিলিংয়ের নান্দনিক সৌন্দর্যের কাছে হার মেনে।

বছর ঘুরে দার্জিলিং আবার সরব হয়; রেলগাড়ি আর জিপগুলো একই থাকলেও তার মধ্যে চেপে বসা মুখগুলোর পুনরাবৃত্তি হয় খুবই কম। ট্যুরিস্টরা আসেন, মুগ্ধ হয়ে 'আবার কখনো সময় করে আসতে হবে' ভাবতে ভাবতে চলে যান, মাঝেমধ্যে বোধহয় মনে পড়ে এখানকার মানুষদের কথা। তবে তলিয়ে ভাবে না কেউ, দেখে না স্বর্গীয় জনপদের ��ানুষগুলো কী নারকীয় জীবন পার করে এসেছে, এখনো করছে!

গল্পচ্ছলে, চমৎকার গদ্যে পরিমল ভট্টাচার্য বলে গেলেন তার দার্জিলিংয়ের দিনগুলোর কড়চা,
ব্রিটিশ উপনিবেশে গল্প, দার্জিলিংয়ের টুকরো টুকরো ইতিহাস, লেপচা বা ভুটিয়াদের সংগ্রামী জীবনের ইতিহাস, পাহাড়ের রাজনীতি ও গোর্খাল্যান্ড নিয়ে গড়ে ওঠা আন্দোলন।
পরিমল বাবু বাকি দশটা ভেতো বাঙালির মতো কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘার চূড়া দেখে বিমোহিত হয়ে ফিরে আসেননি, তিনি দেখতে চেয়েছেন রূপসী পাহাড়টার পিছে প্রায় সমতল ভূমিটার মাচার ওপর বাস করা মানুষগুলোর জীবনকে, জানতে চেয়েছেন তাদের ইতিহাসকে।

এ বইয়ের পৃষ্ঠা উল্টিয়ে ঘরে বসেই দার্জিলিংয়ের বিখ্যাত টয়ট্রেনে করে ঘুরে আসা যায় হিল স্টেশন, দেখে আসা যায় ঘোমটা দিয়ে জেগে ওঠা কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘা আর হাজার বছর ধরে বেঁচে থাকা প্রায় বিলুপ্ত স্যালামান্ডার। সাথে জানা যায় ভুলতে বসা কালো এক ইতিহাস, যা একসময় ছিল রক্তের মতো টকটকে লাল; সময় যাকে শুকিয়ে কালো করে ফেলেছে। একসময় হয়তো তা মেটে রঙের হয়ে মিশে যাবে মাটির সাথে, সরে যাবে স্মৃতি থেকে।

২০১৬ সালে যখন রিও অলিম্পিক অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছিলো,তখন অলিম্পিকের গ্ল্যামার ধরে রাখার আড়ালে ব্রাজিল সরকার নিম্নবিত্ত আর বস্তিবাসী অসংখ্য মানুষকে জোরপূর্বক উচ্ছেদ করেছিলো। ইন্টারন্যাশনাল মিডিয়ার সামনে,কোটি কোটি দর্শকের চোখের সামনে একটা সফল অলিম্পিকের আয়োজন হয় ঠিকই...অথচ স্থানীয় জনগণ নিজের এতোদিনের ঠিকানা রাতারাতি হারিয়ে ফেলে উদ্বাস্তু হয়ে যায়। ফরাসি সমাজতত্ত্ববিদ ও ফিল্মমেকার গাই ডেবোরের The Spectacle of Society বইয়ে ঠিক এই ধরনের ঘটনাকেই এনেছেন The Spectacle of Inequality এর আওতায়। চোখ-কান খুলে দেখলে বোঝা যাবে, আমাদের চারপাশেই হরদম এই অসম বৈষম্য হয়। আর এটা সম্ভবত সবথেকে বেশি হয় পাহাড়ে। সেটেলার ভাবাপন্ন আমরা মনে করি,পাহাড়ের মানুষ মানেই
সরল(পড়ুন:বুদ্ধিহীন),আবেগপ্রবণ(পড়ুন: রগচটা), সাদাসিধে(পড়ুন: অল্পে খুশি) ও অনুগত(পড়ুন: সহজে বশ্য, গৃহপালিত পশু) —সমতলের বাঙালির এই ধারণাগুলো বরং শাসকের মতো, প্রতিবেশীর মতো নয়। পরিমল ভট্টাচার্যের লেখায় ঠিক এই কথাগুলোই কাঁটাতারের সীমানা পেরিয়ে তাই সর্বৈব সত্য হয়ে উঠেছে।

হিল স্টেশনদের রানী দার্জিলিং। অথচ অফ সিজনের পুরোটা সময় জুড়ে কুয়াশার চাদরে যেন এক খেলনা শহরকে ফেলে রাখা হয় খেলা শেষে পড়ে থাকা পুতুলবাড়ির মতো। সেখানকার বাসিন্দাদের নিয়ে, তাদের অধিকার নিয়ে,চাওয়া-পাওয়া নিয়ে রাজ্য ও কেন্দ্রীয় সরকার বরাবরই উদাসীন। শুধু যখনই পাহাড়ে বিপ্লবের আগুন লাগে, তখন তারা নড়চড়ে বসেন দমনের হোসপাইপে গ্যালন গ্যালন পানি ভরে ফায়ার সার্ভিস দেয়ার জন্য। পড়তে পড়তে নিজের দেশের কথাও মনে পড়ে যায় কোনো কোনো জায়গায়। পরিমল ভট্টাচার্য চিরচেনা দার্জিলিংয়ের ক্যাবারে নর্তকীর মতো উজ্জ্বল ঝলমলে পোশাকের আড়ালে থাকা দুঃখী, নির্মম পরিস্থিতির শিকার নারীটিকেই যেন ধরতে চেয়েছেন দরদের সাথে। শীতল বাতাসের ঝাপ্টায় এক মন কেমন করা বিষণ্ণতা চেপে বসে রন্ধ্রে রন্ধ্রে।

চাকরি পেয়ে ইংরেজীর লেকচারার হিসেবে পরিমল ভট্টাচার্য গিয়েছিলেন দার্জিলিংয়ে। ছোটবেলায় দাদুর মুখে শোনা এই শৈলরানির গল্পকে ঠিক যেন মেলাতে পারেন নি তার সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে। যেন সময়ের ব্যবধানে ক্রমশ পাল্টাতে থেকেছে একটা শহর আর সেই সময়কে দক্ষ রেকর্ডারের মতো পরিমল ছুঁতে চেয়েছেন ফুল এসকেপ কাগজে লিখে লিখে। একটা শহরের ঔপনিবেশিক অতীত, বহিরাগত চোখের রোম্যান্টিক সৌন্দর্যের আড়ালে নির্জন বিচ্ছিন্ন জীবনের কষ্ট,লড়াই আর আতঙ্কের গল্প আড্ডা জমিয়েছে ‘দার্জিলিং: স্মৃতি সমাজ ইতিহাস’ বইটির পাতায় পাতায়।
দার্জিলিংকে ঘিরে মানুষের আকাশছোঁয়া রোম্যান্টিকতার আড়ালে নীরবে চলে সাংস্কৃতিক আগ্রাসন,দমনের কুহেলী ভাষার রাজনীতি।

দার্জিলিংয়ের হোম ওয়েদারে মানুষ কেন আত্মহত্যা প্রবণ হয়ে ওঠে সেই গল্প বলতে বলতে লেখক আমাদের চোখ মেলে দেখান স্থানীয় মানুষের জলকষ্ট,জীবন্ত ফসিল হিমালয়ান স্যালাম্যান্ডার, পেমবার ছাতা,নিউটনের গিটারে ওয়েস্টার্ন পপ আর অতি অবশ্যই গোর্খাল্যান্ডের মরিয়া সময়ের দাবিতে মরিয়া দাওয়াইয়ের দৃশ্য। পরিমল এটাকে ‘পিছলে হারিয়ে যেতে থাকা সময়কে খামচে ধরার একটা চেষ্টা’। আর সেই চেষ্টা সফল। একটা শহরের কুয়াশায় ভারী বাতাসে ভর করে থাকা রূহকে পরিমল লেখার আদলে জন্মাতে থাকা দৃশ্যের কোলাজে গেঁথে সঁপে দিয়েছেন পাঠকের কাছে। সেখানকার লেজ নাড়তে থাকা কালো কুচকুচে কুকুরগুলোর সাথে দোস্তি,লোকাল বার থেকে ফিরে বেনসন কুঞ্জুর সাথে জোড়াথাঙের আলো খুঁজে ফেরা, হেমরাজ ছেত্রীর সাথে সিলভার ফারের জঙ্গলের আড়ালে পোখরির মাঝে স্যালাম্যান্ডারের মেটিং স্পটের সুলুক সন্ধান, জুলিয়ার সোনালি চুল আর বদলাতে থাকা চোখের মণির রংয়ে কোথায় যেন হারিয়ে যায় মন।

ভারতের বিখ্যাত সিরিজ‘পাতাল লোক’ এর সেকেন্ড সিজনে ড্যানিয়েল নামের এক দুর্ধর্ষ স্নাইপারের চরিত্র করেছেন গোর্খা যুবক‘প্রশান্ত তামাং’। এই প্রশান্ত তামাং কলকাতা পুলিশের কনস্টেবল। ইন্ডিয়ান আইডলে গানের প্রতিযোগিতায় দার্জিলিং-সিকিমের হাজার হাজার মানুষ তাকে এসএমএস করে এনে দিয়েছিল বিজয়ীর সম্মান। ২০০৭ সালের পাহাড়ের এই কৌম অভ্যুত্থানের কথা তুলে আনতেও ভোলেন নি পরিমল ভট্টাচার্য। বাদ পড়ে নি দার্জিলিং জুড়ে একসময় মহামারীর মতো ছড়িয়ে পড়া এইডসের দৌরাত্ম্য। বেনসন কুঞ্জু কুঞ্জু নামের এক কেরালার যুবকের গল্পের মধ্য দিয়ে পরিমল এনেছেন সেই প্রসঙ্গ। যারা অঞ্জন দত্তের ২০১৯ সালের ‘ফাইনালি ভালোবাসা’সিনেমাটা দেখেছেন,সেখানে অনির্বাণের এইডসে আক্রান্ত অভিনেতার চরিত্রটির কথা মনে করবেন। সেটাও কিন্তু দার্জিলিংয়ের তুলনামূলক কম আলো ফেলা এই দিকটাকে নিয়ে এসেছিলো। যদিও পরিমল ভট্টাচার্যের বেনসন কুঞ্জু কুঞ্জু,হেমরাজ ছেত্রী চরিত্রগুলোর বাস্তব অস্তিত্ব সরাসরি নেই, বরং বাস্তবের খানিকটা ছায়া ধরে এসেছে।

পরিমল ভট্টাচার্যের লেখার ধাঁচ নিয়ে কথা বলতে গেলে ‘ঘোরলাগা’,‘সম্মোহনী’ এই ধরনের বিশেষণ বলে দায়মোচন করা হয়তো যায়। কিন্তু নৈসর্গিক দৃশ্যকে পাঠকের মধ্যে চারিয়ে দেয়ার আশ্চর্য যে ক্ষমতা,সেটাকে এই সমস্ত শব্দে প্রকাশ করা কঠিন। দার্জিলিংয়ের কুয়াশা নিয়ে পড়তে পড়তে,পাঠকের মনও কুয়াশাচ্ছন্ন হয়ে যায়। আকাশে দেখা যায় মেঘের ওড়না। দার্জিলিং শহর একধরনের পাহাড়ি ছত্রাকের মতো গভীর আলস্য আর অবসাদের আবেশে ছড়িয়ে যায় মজ্জায় মজ্জায়। সেখানে রোদের রঙ সেপিয়া। প্রেতিনীর কান্নার মতো বাজে টয়ট্রেনের ইঞ্জিনের হুইসেল। ঘন শ্যাওলাবৃত বার্চের ডাল থেকে শিশির ঝরে টুপটাপ। পায়ের নিচে পিছলায় আলগা পাথর। আর কুয়াশায় দাঁড়কাক ডাকে—কুচকুচে কালো পালক আর ঠোঁটের ভেতরটা উজ্জ্বল গোলাপি। তার ডানার ঝাপটানিও দেখা যায় মনের চোখ দিয়ে। কোনো বারান্দায় ভারী হতে থাকা বুটের আওয়াজ আরও কাছে আসতে থাকে প্রতি সেকেন্ডের ব্যবধানে।

100% a biased review but even then I'd say this is some beautiful writing. When I ran the page 'To Darjeeling, With Love' before I realised facebook is a cesspool I was very wary of being the mainlander tourist romanticising very real hardships, but I think this memoir does a very good job of treating Darjeeling, its history and its people with the respect it deserves. And there's just so much love for Darjeeling in this memoir, my heart feels very full.

দার্জিলিঙের অনির্বচনীয় নিসর্গের পরতে-পরতে লুকিয়ে থাকা পাহাড়িদের সীমাহীন দুর্দশা, ত্যাগ ও বঞ্চনার শতবছরের ইতিহাস তুলে ধরেছেন লেখক। লেখকের দীর্ঘদিন দার্জিলিং বাসের স্মৃতিচারণার সাথে অনিবার্যভাবে যুক্ত হয়েছে তৎকালীন এবং বর্তমানের বিভিন্ন সামাজিক অনুষঙ্গ ও ইতিহাস। পাহাড় ও পাহাড়িদের নিয়ে ঘৃণ্য রাজনীতি-রাজনীতি খেলায় স্বার্থসিদ্ধি হয় মুষ্টিমেয় তথাকথিত নেতা ও রাজনৈতিক কর্তাব্যক্তিদের। পাহাড়িদের বর্ণনাতীত যন্ত্রণা-দগ্ধ ক্ষত একইরকম দগদগে থেকে যায় যুগের পর যুগ। বিমল লামা'র "নুন চা" উপন্যাসের বড় একটা অংশ জুড়ে রয়েছে পাহাড়ি রাজনীতির ছলাকলা ও প্রবঞ্চনার আখ্যান; "দার্জিলিং" পড়ে পাহাড়ি রাজনীতির দিকটা একটু বিশদভাবে জানা হলো।

পরিমল ভট্টাচার্যের জাদুকরী গদ্যে সবকিছু বিশিষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে; এমন সুন্দর কাব্যিক গদ্য খুব কম দেখা যায়।

One of the books to which I took an instant liking, yielding a fruitful completion within a few days (enabling me to proudly jump back from a reading slump owing to personal and professional commitments). I could say, its definitely an excellent work of translation.

Post finishing the book, I was awestruck as to how a 200 page book could cover such a wide variety of topics. It is not only - beautifully but masterfully and skilfully written. Translation has only enhanced the reading experience. The liberal usage of metaphors at many corners (though goes unnoticed at times), simple writing and delightful characters yield an unending charm and definitely aid the reading pleasure.

The book is set in Darjeeling and is about the hill town. The author spent few years working there in the 1990's and has chosen to write about the same in the year 2008 - recalling his time spent and the associated memories. The translation has come out in 2017. Though many years have passed and changes have happened since then to now, this book evokes such nostalgia that - any reader having visited or not, not Darjeeling but any hill station can relate to many of the things written.

Reader gets treated with the facets of Darjeeling like, weather, history (days of the Raj), landscape, people, original inhabitants to migrants, the culture and traditions and intermingling of people, occupations, conflicts, socio-economic-ecological dynamics and much more.

Reading the book brings joy on one side yet causes heartbreak on the other side (owing to the degradation in many aspects).

Most of the things which have happened (like ecological degradation) can never be reversed. We cannot get to live in the past but what we can really enjoy whilst reading the book is the memory, nostalgia, reminiscence of the good old days. Yet, amidst the nostalgia, what hits hard is the truth and reality. Scarcity of resources, unemployment, overcrowding has turned the queen of hill station into yet another ordinary (passable) holiday destination.

Though there is history and contemporary information - the period comprises of the days of the Raj and 1990's. Decades between have been forgotten except a lone Satyajit Ray movie which marks a solitary presence. What really happened post independence till Gorkhaland agitation doesn't find mention in the book. Somewhere along the lines, I felt the hardships and reality of the contemporary life overtake the joy and pleasure of the days gone by.

But nonetheless an excellent cracker of a book.

দার্জিলিং বললেই কী মনে পড়ে? এক অপার্থিব সৌন্দর্য, কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘা, ক্যাভেন্টার্সের ছাত, ম্যাল, পাহাড়, সবুজ, মেঘ, কুয়াশা, অপূর্ব নৈসর্গিক দৃশ্য। মনে পড়ে ফেলুদার গোয়েন্দাগিরির শুরু, কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘা ছবির অপূর্ব সিনেমাটোগ্রাফি, তিতলি ছবির টয় ট্রেন। কিন্তু দার্জিলিং কি কেবল তাই?
দার্জিলিং এর নিজস্ব ইতিহাস, মানুষ আমাদের চেনা কল্পনাতে বড় কম আসে। এর নির্মম রাজনৈতিক বাস্তবতা, গোর্খা আর লেপচা ভুটিয়াদের জীবনাচরণ এসব নিয়ে ভাবতে বসি না আমরা। জানিই না হয়তো!
পরিমল ভট্টাচার্য কলেজের শিক্ষক ছিলেন দার্জিলিং এ। তাই দীর্ঘদিন দার্জিলিং তাঁর অন্তরে মিশে ছিল। বাস করতে গিয়ে তাই অন্য চোখে দেখেছেন তিনি শহরটাকে, শহরের মানুষকে, মিশ্র জাতির কুকুরগুলোকে, দার্জিলিং এ বেড়াতে যাওয়া অতিথিদের। দেখেছেন পট পরিবর্তন। শহরের বেড়ে যাওয়া। আবার ঢালে বাস করা অগুনতি পরিবারের বারবার ভেঙে গড়ে ওঠা। আশ্চর্য ভাষায় লিপিবদ্ধ করেছেন, যা হৃদয় ছুঁয়ে যায়।
পরিমল ভট্টাচার্য এর ভাষা, শব্দচয়নে আমি বারবার মুগ্ধ হই। মুগ্ধ হই তাঁর ভাবনাতে। পরিমল ভট্টাচার্য ইদানীং আমার অত্যন্ত প্রিয় লেখক হয়ে উঠছেন।
একদম অপরিচিত থেকে নিজে খুঁজে বই বের করে পড়ে দুজন লেখক আমার অসম্ভব প্রিয় হয়ে উঠেছেন, যাঁদের বই কেনার আগে আমি আর দুবার ভাবি না। একজন শ্রীপান্থ আর আরেকজন এই পরিমল ভট্টাচার্য।
আবার যাই দার্জিলিং এ। বইটা পড়তে পড়তে অনবদ্য এক অভিজ্ঞতার সঞ্চয় হল, ভিন্ন চোখে দেখতে শিখলাম আসলে সৌন্দর্যকে, অনুভব করতে শিখলাম দেখার চোখের বদলটা কত জরুরি!
লেখকের দাদুর জীবনে নস্টালজিয়ার আরেক নাম ছিল দার্জিলিং। তাই চাকরিসূত্রে দার্জিলিং যাবার খবরে মা যতটা বিচলিত হয়েছিলেন, দাদু হয়েছিলেন ততটাই উচ্ছ্বসিত। সেই দাদুর মৃত্যুসংবাদ পেয়ে লেখককে যখন দার্জিলিং ছাড়তে হয়, তখন তিনি সমতলে নামামাত্রই যে অনুভূতিটা তাঁর হয়, একজন সমতলের মানুষ হিসেবে, এটা ভীষণ খাঁটি। সত্যিই দার্জিলিং অসাধারণ এক পর্যটন শহর, কিন্তু নিজের জায়গার মায়া আর স্বস্তির তুলনাই হয় না যদিও সে হয়তো রূপে একটু সাধারণই!
স্মৃতিকথা আর ভ্রমণ-অভিজ্ঞতার মিশেলে রচিত এ রচনাগুলো আসলে প্রবন্ধ, কিন্তু এমন সুচিন্তিত প্রবন্ধ পড়তে পড়তে মনেই থাকে না ধারাটার নাম এমন খটোমটো কিছু।

The book is a goldmine of information on Darjeeling but the narrative is scattered.Just like its title the narrative never follows a timeline or a roadmap or any thing that seems in order.Its a mumbo - jumbo of the author's memories,Darjeeling's past,Gorkhaland agitation etc which makes the reader feel bored at times.Then comes the biggest problem.The author probably thinks that each one of his readers is very much familiar with Darjeeling.Thus the book doesn't have a photograph or even a map.The only saving grace in this book is the last chapter.I have read books concentrated on a city before but this was the worst.Thus I rate it two stars i.e. just an average book for anyone who has been to Darjeeling.Pass on if you don't know about "Queen of Hill Stations (in my opinion thats Mussorie)"

Lovely memoir, carefully written and constructed. I have never been to that part of the country, and Mr Bhattacharya's book may well be the catalyst I needed to go there. Something to comment upon is a certain (Bengali?) subtleness in the telling of its stories. The author seems to hold himself back, asking you to fill in a few blanks. And the treatment works, telling you enough, making you read a few well-woven passages again.

There are very few books that compel you to talk about them and share the excerpts with your friends and acquaintances on a real-time basis. As you share your intimate and private moments of enchantment, it grows in you as a supplementary obligation to read it with more sensitivity and engage the others in the same process. I came across the Bengali version of this book last year, and while attempting to be perhaps, the first reader of the same I was doubtful: would I relish a similar narration which I already went through in my mother tongue? The reason, I already underwent similar heartbreaks. But well, here comes a book with an exception.

No Path in Darjeeling is Straight by Parimal Bhattacharya is just not about “memories of a hill town” as the cover-page claims; it is certainly more than a memoir. The book caters to two aspects of Darjeeling : from the viewpoint of a tourist and of an employee who is bound to spend a considerable period of time in the city. And the latter is definitely multilayered.

The book unfolds a plethora of characters; each of them contributes to the narration of Bhattacharya, as he proclaims “Darjeeling is not a town, it is a narration”. The characters are mostly the people he came across during the tenure of his career in this town: his students, professors, street side chaiwala, and it extends to his journey down the memory lane in pursuit of finding out a beggar boy he saw in Ray’s movie Kanchenjungha. Since each character comprises his narration of Darjeeling, he gradually discovers the stark disjointedness of the vision that his Dadu (grandfather) painted in his head about Darjeeling and the reality. Bhattacharya points out that its apparent quietude and simplicity, as remarked by Indira Gandhi “The people here seem to have no problem!” was stricken down by the warning of Agham Singh Giri : “Don’t be misled. We smile despite our lot.” (pg 70)

Thus, the author brings out the true essence of the city. At one hand he does not fail to underline the sheer beauty of orange trees, abundant in a certain height of Darjeeling comparing it to the “golden lamps in a green night” at the paradisal garden of Andrew Marvell’s poem Bermudas or the magical spell cast upon him by the ethereal tune of Jamaica Farewell in an evening at a “sleepy hamlet nestled in wooded hills”. On the other, he delves deep into the history of its original inhabitants, collating it with the British dream of the exotic east , hiding stories of oppression and identity even long after the era of British subjugation. Throughout the novel rings a recurrent question: “Darjeeling, who do you belong to?”

No Path in Darjeeling is Straight is a highly recommended book which offers you the vision of a city in its all possible aspects , ‘in its the best of times and its the worst of times’. A must read for all who love to read beyond the stories, beyond the appearance and to keep on enhancing the perception.

What an utter disappointment. The book's blurb set it out to be a historical memoir of a young English Bengali professor transferred to the early 90s Darjeeling post a political agitation. The bandh had cut the hills off from the plains for months and made the national news. From the monuments in the current Darjeeling, this event seemed to be an important historical moment for the Darjeelingeys. Naturally, I expected the book to have a political backdrop. However, I ended up with a book with a prose too flowery and similitudes one too many for my liking. This memoir did not progress but scattered anecdotes here and there. The writing was full of romantic nostalgia that one often times hears from elder generations: "Arey yeh toh kuch bhi nahi, hamare time toh [fill in the blank with exaggerations]". It could very well be true, but I couldn't sympathize in this case, since the author himself admits the new Darjeelingeys is surer of their political demands than generations before.

The only saving grace of the book was the final chapter in which the author (finally) describes the undercurrent of political discomposure that is not for a regular tourist's eye. At least, it ended on a strong note.

পাহাড় নিয়ে সমতলের মানুষের রোমান্টিকতা আর পাহাড় দখলকারীদের মানসিকতাটা যুগে যুগে জাতিভেদে একইরকম। লেখকের অসাধারণ বর্ণনাশৈলিতে সেসব কথা উঠে এসেছে ‘দার্জিলিং’ বইটিতে।
কর্মসূত্রে যেই শহরে বদলি হয়ে গিয়ে শহরেরই একজন হয়ে উঠেছিলেন; লেখকের স্মৃতিচারণায় বার বার এসেছে আমাদের চেনা অচেনা সেই রহস্যময় রোমান্টিক দার্জিলিং, মাঝে মাঝেই এনেকডোট হিসেবে এসে পড়েছে শোষনের ইতিহাসের প্রসঙ্গ। সুখপাঠ্য বই। আজকাল বাংলায় সুখপাঠ্য বর্ননা আর একই সাথে আগ্রহোদ্দীপক বিষয়বস্তু মেলা বেশ কঠিন। সেই অভাব বার বার মিটিয়ে যাচ্ছেন লেখক ।

পরিমল ভট্টাচার্যের লিখা আগে পড়া হয়নি। প্রায় মাস হয়ে যাবে বইটা পড়তে আরম্ভ করেছিলাম। অল্প অল্প করে শেষ করলাম অবশেষে। সুন্দর শব্দে ছিমছাম বর্ণণায় দার্জিলিং শহরটাকে খুব কাছ থেকে মনোঃচক্ষে অবলোকন করা গেল। তবে কিছু বর্ণনা কিছুটা একঘেয়েমি ও বিরক্তির উদ্রেক ঘটিয়েছে। তবে এটা বাদ দিলে পরিশেষে বলাই যায় সবকিছুর বিবেচনায় সময়টা তেমন মন্দ কাটেনি।

Day in, day out, it continues to drizzle through murky fog, turning everything wet and dripping, and casting a film of moisture over every object inside shuttered rooms. The Englishmen lovingly called this home weather. Viceroy Lord Lyton wrote to his wife in a letter: '.. the afternoon was rainy and the road muddy, but such beautiful English rain, such delicious English mud!' "

Books about places are among my favourites.

'No path in Darjeeling is straight' is a beautiful book about Darjeeling. The author spent a few years teaching at a government college in Darjeeling in the 90s and the book is a collection of his memories of the place. The best aspect of the book is that it's written from both tourist and local resident's perspective. So while there are vivid descriptions of rolling hills, misty tea estates and long rainy seasons on the one hand, there are also mentions about hard realities of life in Darjeeling such as high infant mortality rate, water scarcity, political unrest and many more on the other. It's the smooth merger of the two that sets a melancholic tone.

In addition to the author's personal experience, it also has elements of colonial history, stories about people of Darjeeling, tourists, descriptions about famous landmarks as well as lesser known places around the town. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's curious to learn more about the place.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book. More so because Darjeeling holds a special place in my heart. I first visited with my parents in 1968 and a number of times thereafter. This is the place I saw the Himalayas in its majestic splendor and that image remains in a special niche in my memory. I could feel the author's pain when he returns years later and keeps looking for the Darjeeling in nooks and corners.

Reading this book is like listening to a conversation. A happy and sad one at that as the author takes you on a whirlwind trip to his town. There are times when the author would wander away from the main narrative onto a side story but therein lies its charm. You travel, live, smile and lament at what Darjeeling has become. Reading this will make you a Darjeelingey in its minute way. Or at least try to be. A bit incoherent but I enjoyed the views painted of Darjeeling through his words.

Far from expectation, the book is scattered and pretty hard to read. It took me some determination to finish it.

Though the book has many valuable pieces of information on the history of people and different places of the city, it's readable only at some isolated parts where the narration is continuous, like an adventure to trace endangered salamanders or trekking to remote mountain villages. Whenever the writer tries to paint a picture of the place, he resorts to long paragraphs full of over poetic and small sentences which soon becomes puzzling and hard to follow.

In an effort to give a description of the city beyond the tourist's point of view, the writer becomes very sympathetic to the local people but in that process sometimes he goes close to offending others. Though after the British left, it's the wanderlust and romanticism of the Bengalis that have kept the place in prominence, both economically and in the media- of which this book is an example itself- the writer fails to appreciate that. "The only true contribution of the Bengalis are the jackals of Darjeeling". He describes in detail how an upper class anglicized old lady hates the middle-class tourists crowding the streets. "Darjeeling is no more the hilltown secluded for the rich". At times he goes dangerously close to sympathize with the antisocial elements by dismissing the murders and burning down of the government buildings by taking a tone like that's just the way things are here.

This book is meant only for the locals. Its haphazardness fails to give a proper description of the city to someone who has never visited the place like me and at times it's offending to the tourists who wish to visit Darjeeling and fall in love with "The Queen of Hills".

No Path in Darjeeling is Straight elicited the exact feelings within me as the author so aptly puts. It is this very feeling I often experience every time I come back to Darjeeling after a lapse of time.
Coming to Darjeeling as a professor of the Engish Department in the Government College in Darjeeling with a picture of the colonial glory painted in his head by his grandfather, Bhattacharya finds a stark contrast in the Darjeeling of the 90s, and yet all beauty is not lost. Pesented by the challenges of modern times he goes on to discover a Darjeeling whose natural beauty and colonial nostalgia both writhes in the agony under commercial exploitation, and makes peace, at the same time, with the evergrowing vehicles and population jamming the once open and isolated roads.
We embark on a journey with the author to the past to the British Colonial times while never losing grip on post colonial Darjeeling - a bare skeleton, the flesh of its past glory stripped entirely. Bhattacharya's minute observations of the 'Darjeelingeys', their ethno-diversity, the illustrous beauty of the white peaks of Kanchenjunga looking down upon the crummy and disheveled spread of the town makes it a worthwhile read.
Never losing sight of the disconcerting reality of unemployment, grass root politics, and ever growing frustrations among the youth that they hide readily behind their ever smiling faces, Bhattacharya draws a melancholic tribute to Darjeeling in his dazzling prose. Perhaps this is also a dedication to all those who journeyed to the queen of the hills in the past seeking answers in the lap of the pink tinted Kanchenjunga of evening skies.

ডানা গজানোর পর যখন প্রথম প্রথম উড়ে বেড়ানোর বয়স তখন আমাদের এলাকার সীমান্তের দিকে বিকালে বেড়াতে যেতাম। ছোট বয়সে সে জায়গায় যাওয়া নিষিদ্ধ ছিল। আমরা বলতাম সুইজারল্যান্ড। সেখানেই একটা চায়ের দোকান ছিল, আর ছিল একটা মিথ। বড়রা সাবধান করতো আবার অনেক বন্ধুও বলতো ওই দোকানে নাকি চায়ের সাথে আফিম মেশায়। চা বেশ ঘন, আঠালো হয়। একবার যে সেই চা খায় তাকে নাকি প্রতিদিন খেতেই হয়।

যা কিছু নিয়ম, তা ভাঙতে চাওয়ার সময় ছিল সেটা। সেই চা খাওয়ায় ছিল নিষিদ্ধ রোমাঞ্চ। চায়ের আঠালো স্বাদের সাথে সেই রোমাঞ্চ মিশে যে অদ্ভুত স্বাদ তৈরি হত তা এখনো যেন গেঁথে আছে চেতনে, বা অবচেতনে।

এমনিতে এসব কথার সাথে এই বইয়ের কনো সম্পর্ক নেই, প্রাসঙ্গিকও নয়। বই পড়ি। কখনও ভাল লাগে, কখনো লাগেনা। কিন্তু এই লেখায় যে মাদকতা আছে তা আমার এবছরে পড়া অন্য কিছুর সাথে তুলনায় আসে না। বহু দিন পর সেই চায়ের ঘন, মিঠে স্বাদ ফিরে পেলাম। আর মগজে ঢুকে গেল কিছুটা দার্জিলিঙের বর্ষার কুয়াশা।

পাহাড��ে ঘেরা শহরের নাম দার্জিলিং। কেউ বলে প্রেম, কেউ বলে পর্যটন, কেউ বা চায়ের রাজ্য। কিন্তু পরিমল ভট্টাচার্যের লেখা ‘দার্জিলিং: স্মৃতি সমাজ ইতিহাস’ পড়া মানে সেই পরিচিত দার্জিলিংকে একেবারে ভেতর থেকে ছুঁয়ে দেখা — যেখানে পাহাড় শুধু পাইন-চিত্র নয়, বরং কষ্ট, কুয়াশা আর কাঁটা-ঘেরা ইতিহাসের নিরালায় লুকিয়ে থাকা দীর্ঘশ্বাস।

আজ সকালবেলা বইটির শেষ পাতা পড়ার পর মনে হল — আমি যেন এক স্মৃত��পটে ঘোর কাটিয়ে ফিরলাম। এ বই যেন কোনো এক পাহাড়ি মানুষ, যাঁর মুখ আবছা ভেসে আছে মনের কোণে। এই বই যেন সেই মানুষটির আত্মজীবনী।

সাতটি অধ্যায় ও দুটি উপ-অধ্যায় জুড়ে লেখক এমন এক বুনন তৈরি করেছেন যেখানে ইতিহাস, ভূগোল, নৃবিজ্ঞান, স্মৃতিচারণ আর সমাজতাত্ত্বিক বিশ্লেষণ একে অপরের সঙ্গে মিলেমিশে এক মোহময় ভাষ্য হয়ে উঠেছে। এটি প্রেমপত্র নয়, উপাসনা নয়—এ এক রাজনৈতিক কাব্য। গোর্খাল্যান্ড আন্দোলন, লেপচা-ভুটিয়া সংস্কৃতির নিঃশব্দ ক্ষয়, কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘার তলায় জমে থাকা বঞ্চনার দীর্ঘ রূপরেখা—সবই এসেছে সংবেদনশীল অথচ তীক্ষ্ণ বিশ্লেষণে। লেখক এক জায়গায় প্রশ্ন তোলেন, “দার্জিলিং তুমি কার?”—এই প্রশ্নের সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে নিজেকেই জিজ্ঞেস করলাম, “আমি কি দার্জিলিংকে কখনও সত্যিই দেখেছি?”

অনেকেই দার্জিলিং নিয়ে লিখেছেন—কেউ প্রেমিকের চোখে, কেউ পর্যটকের, কেউ ঐতিহাসিক পাণ্ডিত্যে। কিন্তু ভট্টাচার্য এখানে 'অন্তর্দৃষ্টি' দিয়ে লিখেছেন। তাঁর দার্জিলিং কোনো ল্যান্ডস্কেপ নয়, এটা 'ল্যান্ড'-এর ক্রমাগত দখল হয়ে যাওয়ার ইতিহাস। Liz Harris-এর Darjeeling Inheritance চা-বাগানের প্রেম ও সাম্রাজ্যবাদ ঘিরে আবর্তিত হলেও সেটা এক বহিরাগত নারীর চোখে দেখা ঘটনা। সেখানে প্রেম আছে, কিন্তু ভেতরটা দেখা হয় না। আর Ann Bennett-এর The Fortune Teller of Kathmandu বা The Lake Pavilion—সবেতেই দার্জিলিং বা হিমালয় এক ব্যাকড্রপ, একরকম নস্টালজিক নকশা। কিন্তু ভট্টাচার্যের দার্জিলিং—একটা চরিত্র, যার ক্ষত আছে, যার প্রতিটি স্যাঁতসেঁতে গলিতে জমে আছে ইতিহাসের থমথমে বাতাস।

তাঁর দার্জিলিংয়ের ফুটবল খেলার স্মৃতির মতো মেটাফর, সালামাণ্ডারের বিলুপ্তি-প্রায় উপস্থিতি, চকবাজারের সাদা চোখের অশান্তি, কিংবা ম্যালেরিয়ায় ভরা জঙ্গলের পুরনো গল্প—সব মিলিয়ে গড়ে ওঠে এক ঘন, ধোঁয়াটে, অথচ দীপ্তিময় ছবি। Sunil Gangopadhyay-এর কাকাবাবু ও বজ্র লামা দার্জিলিংকে রোমাঞ্চের মঞ্চ করে তোলে। Mikael Bergstrand-এর Dimma över Darjeeling শহরটাকে মজার দৃষ্টিতে দেখে। Payal Doshi তাঁর ফ্যান্টাসি বই Rea and the Blood of the Nectar-এ দার্জিলিংকে এক ম্যাজিকাল থ্রেশহোল্ড করে তোলে। অথচ ভট্টাচার্যের দার্জিলিং ম্যাজিক নয়, বাস্তব। তার অ্যাস্ট্রান্থিয়া হচ্ছে সেই দার্জিলিং যা হোমস্টে আর রিসর্টের নিচে চাপা পড়ে যাচ্ছে—ধীরে ধীরে, নীরবে।

এই বই এক আয়না। আমরা যারা দার্জিলিংয়ে গিয়ে শুধু কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘার ছবি তুলে ফিরে এসেছি, তাদের জন্য এই বই এক reckoning । এখানে পাহাড়ের মানুষ কথা বলেন, ধ্বনি নয়, নিঃশ্বাসের মাধ্যমে। লেখক যেমন পাহাড়কে দেখেছেন, তেমনি আমাদের শেখান—শুধু দেখা নয়, বোঝা জরুরি। এই বই কোনও ভ্রমণ গাইড নয়, কোনও পর্যটকনির্দেশক নয়। এটা দার্জিলিং শহরের নিজস্ব ডায়েরি—যা লেখা হয়েছে কুয়াশা, রক্ত, প্রজাপতির ডানায়, আর রাজনৈতিক উদাসীনতায়। যারা দেখতে নয়, বোঝতে চান—তাদের জন্য এটি এক অনিবার্য পাঠ।

In December 2024, during my visit to the enchanting hills of Darjeeling, I had the pleasure of immersing myself in a captivating book that beautifully intertwined with my journey. Reading this book both before and after my visit allowed me to draw remarkable connections to the many sights and experiences that Darjeeling had to offer.

The author skillfully paints a vivid picture of Darjeeling, capturing its essence in a way that resonated deeply with my own experiences. Through the pages, I was transported to familiar streets and landmarks, making my exploration of the town all the more enriching. The book provided me with an insightful perspective on the political climate of Darjeeling, shedding light on the complex dynamics that have shaped the region over the years. It delves into the British influence in establishing Darjeeling as a prominent hill station, offering a historical backdrop that deepened my understanding of the place.

What truly stands out in this book are the narrations of specific incidents that read like a novel or a compelling short story. These narrative elements add a layer of intrigue and engagement, making the book not just an informative read but also an enjoyable one. Like taking everything most easily available to oneself for granted, I had been travelling to myriads of places since childhood till date , except much of North Bengal. This book was a casual pick up as my parents bought it from their recent trip to Darjeeling and left it at my flat. Picked up casually, by couldn't let go of it. Such was the beauty in the writer's simple way of weaving a picture that almost took me on a virtual tour across multiple eras through and beyond Darjeeling. 5 stars for not romanticising everything about a hill station , and rather showcasing the grimness of a cloudy cold place and YET making the reader realise why he is so attached to this nostalgic place. A fresh read , and also helped me gain lot of general knowledge in fun way.

A place that I've been visiting since 1968, first time with parents and a number of times later. I saw the Himalayan splendour for the first time in Darjeeling and for various reasons it's a place very close to my heart and holds a special niche in my memory. Though I have to admit that with every subsequent visit, my mental image of Darjeeling took a knock but I still can see the Darjeeling of 1968, our hotel on Laden La road and our return to the plains cutting our visit short just hours before the massive landslide. The book revives so many memories. Though the last chapter could have been shorter, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and could feel the author's pain when he returned later and kept looking for his Darjeeling of his times there.

তিরিশতম জন্মদিন উপলক্ষ্যে দার্জিলিং যাওয়া, একক-ভ্রমণে। সঙ্গী ছিল বইটি। কলোনিয়াল দার্জিলিং নয়, মধ্যবিত্ত বাঙালির গ্রীষ্মাবকাশের অথবা পুজোর ছুটিতে ভিড় জমানোর দার্জিলিং নয়, ম্যল রোডের বাইরের যে শহর, গ্লেনারিসের হোপ লেখা সাইনবোর্ডের সামনের যে প্রগলভ ভিড়, তা ছাপিয়ে যে শহরটা লেপচা, ভুটিয়া, গোর্খাদের, যে শহরটা চাবাগান আর বিভিন্ন বস্তির, তার সম্যক পরিচয় করান লেখক। পাহাড়ের যে রাজনীতি, কৌমচেতনা, জনজীবন, তাদের ক্ষোভ, স্বপ্ন, যা কিছু অজানা উপেক্ষিত তাকে ছুঁয়ে আসা যায় এই বইয়ের ছত্রে ছত্রে।
"দার্জিলিং কার?", এর কোনও অ্যাসারটিভ উত্তর কেনো হয়না, বুঝতে পারি অচিরেই।
সমতলে ফেরার দিন বইটি শেষ করলুম। প্রথমবার শৈলশহরে পা রাখার অভিজ্ঞতাকে সমৃদ্ধ করা, আর আবারও ফিরে যাওয়ার আগ্রহকে জিইয়ে রাখতে এই লেখনীর অবদান মনে থাকবে।

This book takes you to the unknown or forgotten part of Darjeeling through the perspective of an English Lecturer who had to travel all the way from Kolkata to join his first posting. He brings into life the people from the tea gardens, farmers, students, politicians, teachers and countless other people who make up Darjeeling. He goes on to explain the history of Darjeeling intertwined with the current situation.
Those who have visited or stayed in the Darjeeling or nearby areas will be able to relate more to book.

This work is not just memoir, not just cultural fable, and not just sociological analysis. Rather, this small, very readable work of prose paints a fabulous picture of Darjeeling through a mixture of all three of these elements. Certainly living in the area described in this book made it mean more to me than it might to others, but the manner in which Bhattacharya learned empathy and analyzed the complex history and social structure that was (and is still) Darjeeling was enlightening and hopeful.
