Emily Graham Adventures #1

Disruption: A River of Secrets and Betrayal

Rate this book
In the midnight darkness north of New Orleans, the towboat's routine trip up the Mississippi River becomes something far more deadly. Captain Charlie Graff is suddenly thrust into the middle of one of the most twisted domestic terrorist plots ever conceived. He has to use his skill as Captain to protect his crew, his boat, his river, and his country. But he is not alone. On land, already overwhelmed FBI agent Emily Graham finds herself thrust into the role of leading the pursuit of the terrorists. Her journey leads to dead ends and dead witnesses. She discovers her trust in her team-members is wrong, the terrorists are not who they say they are, and that the people who actually initiated the attack don't even exist. This tense, fast-paced thriller is a thousand mile journey with more twists and turns than the river that carries it. A story that begins and ends with betrayal. Betrayal that has but one goal: Disruption.

J.B. Jamison also writes as Pops Jamison

2017 was the year that John Jamison turned 65 and signed-up for Medicare. It was also the year that as J. B. Jamison, he published his first novel called Disruption, as Pops Jamison he published his first children’s book, and as John B. Jamison he signed a contract for his fourth collection of stories with C. S. S. Publishing. A long-time believer in the power of stories, John saw sixty-five as just another bookmark in his personal story…a story of possibilities.

Twenty-five years ago he found himself at Mayo Clinic where he was diagnosed with a serious illness. “I asked the doctor what I could expect and he said, ‘Oh, it’s going to kill you. It might be three years, seven at the most, or maybe tomorrow.’ The guy’s bedside policy was not all that great.” Some reflection led to a career- change into education, and now some 20 years later Jamison hopes to one day cross paths with that doctor again. “I’d like to talk with him about his math”, Jamison says.

Jamison is a believer in the view that while we may have little control over what comes to us each day, we have full control over what we do in response. And he see stories as a powerful way to get through those sometimes challenging days… and sometimes…to just imagine some fun things and have a good time.

After using stories throughout his career and personal life, Jamison decided that sixty-five was a great time to change directions once again and spend more time writing and sharing some of his stories. His background of growing up in a river and towboat family from Beardstown gives him a unique collection of stories. “I grew up in a family of storytellers and liars, and I spent most of my time trying to figure out which was which.” And now his two grandchildren provide the inspiration for his children’s books.

Today, after another novel and more children’s books, John isn’t slowing down. “I feel things creaking when I get up in the morning, and it’s getting harder to bend over far enough to tie my shoes, but I can still tell a good story,” Jamison says. “I’m having fun spending my time on the things I can do, and not wasting my time thinking about the rest.”

John Jamison is available for interviews and speaking engagements.

Disruption by J.B.Jamison is a story of secrets and betrayal on the Mississippi River. Towboats and their crew was a topic I had never read about. Never really thought about how goods are being delivered along the river. Very interesting.

Captain Charlie Graff is put into an untenable situation when his boat is taken over by a group of men who are domestic terrorists. Their mode of destruction is to blow up every bridge along the Mississippi River, thus splitting the country in half. Not only do they want to blow up the bridges but the canisters they are using also has anthrax in them. Why do they want to do this? They feel that the government is corrupt and Congress can't get anything done. Sound familiar? That is why this book was so believable. Terrorism is not the way but when people get disillusioned, some will go to extreme lengths.

Emily Graham along with many people in the government and military get involved in trying to stop the terrorists from completing their plans with Emily as the leader. Clues don't make sense, people are not who she thought they were and she is in a fight against time plus she has a father who is battling the first stages of dementia. All of these things are becoming a distraction in her pursuit to stop the terrorists before there is a disaster such as this country has ever known. Can she figure out who is the leader of the terrorists, who the mole is and how will she stop the terrorists?

All of these things make for a very unputdownable novel that will keep the reader wanting more. I enjoyed it immensely and learned a bit about towboats and life on the Mississippi River to boot! Engaging and believable characters and a plot that could have been ripped from the headlines. I want to read more by this author, oh yes I have book two on board to read soon! Love a fast-paced political thriller? Then this one is for you!

I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway. Thanks to Goodreads and Jamison Books for the opportunity to review it. This was a fast paced read that turned into a wild ride up and and down the Mississippi. Agent Emily Graham had her hands full dealing with her fathers declining health and working a case involving a radical group trying to prove their point through “disruption” of towns/lives along the river by using a hijacked towboat. The end involved as many twists and turns as there were bends in the river and really made Agent Graham unable to trust anyone but herself.

I spent a good time reading Disruption. It is definitely a breathtaking and page turner book.

Two things drove me to read it. The first one was the presentation of the book made by J. B. Jamison when he talked about the relationship between his family members and the Mississippi river and he told that some of them have been involved since generations in river jobs. His father was a towboat captain. The second was also about the author. I was touched by the fact that he was sharing his opinions and answered readers' reviews by explaining events described in his book.

There were many characters and the author didn't spend enough time to introduce them to the reader. However, I think that FBI agent Emily's character is well designed and was inspiring.

The story is about an unknown group that would like to create what they call a "disruption" by deliberately designing a plan to sabotage all bridges along the Mississippi river using nuclear weapons. They were expecting that it will draw attention to the unfair and bad situation of certain social categories. Thanks to Emily Graham and her team as well as to Captain Charlie's wisdom the plan didn't reach its goals.

I highly recommend it, especially for those who like fast pacing books.

When I read the book description, I was hooked up by the fact that the action takes place in New Orleans and its surroundings. When I pick up a book, I do it not only because of the story itself but because of many other reasons. For example, now because of the New Orleans (I love that town even though I've never visited it); I chose Forgotten Reflection, by Young-Im Lee because of the Korean's history. So, yes, a book is much more than just the storyline.

When I started this book I had the feeling that I am reading the postscript for an action movie, which I enjoyed more than I would expect me to. Charlie Graff is captain on a towboat. A group of people takes control of his boat, threatening them that if they won't do what they ask them to, will kill their families. While captain Charlie and his crew try to take back the control over the boat, FBI agent Emily Graham is in charge of stopping the boat and saving all the innocent people trapped in this dispute.

What I loved the most about this book is the fact that is a page-turning. Every time I put it down, I thought about it for a moment and about what will happen next. Also, I never guessed the ending and the outcome.

But, I must say that there was a thing that drove me nuts. The lack of descriptions for each character. I couldn't picture any of the characters. I created my own description for most of the characters because I couldn't picture them, psychically, as the writer saw them.

If you aren't decided yet if you want to read this book or not, you can read the first chapter on Jamison's website.

I had a great time with Disruption and I look forward reading a next book written by J. B Jamison.

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Corruption abounds throughout the political system. Congress cannot get anything done. What would you do? One nameless group decides they are going to act in the name of the greater good. They tell the tow boat captain, whose boat they seize, that injury to human life will be minimal but acceptable. What the leader of this group of hijackers doesn’t know is that there is one among them that has a different agenda. The FBI is at a loss to determine who these people are or what their objective is. Time is running out and a nameless caller to the lead FBI agent may be the only chance to stop the attack.

Disruption by J.B. Jamison is a very timely novel in light of how Americans are currently feeling. The current occupant of the White House got there largely with promises of standing up for blue-collar America and implementing a course correction with regard to our country’s moral compass. The plot revolves around a nameless, shapeless network of individuals who feel powerless with regard to politics and morality. While the plot of the book may be an extreme example of what might happen, I believe it is still quite possible based on recent history. I encourage every student of history and politics to read Disruption and give it 4/5 stars.

This is how you kick off a series. I instantly connected with Emily. She is smart and can hold her own with the guys. Yet, at the same time I liked seeing her struggle to care for her ailing father. It showed that she as not perfect and more relatable.

The concept for this story is intriguing and scary at the same time. I can see why Mr. Jamison's father who is a former tugboat captain did not want to spend much time thinking about the idea of this story too much until years later. It really could happen. That is what makes this book so intriguing. In addition to the fact that Mr. Jamison brought to life this story with engaging characters. I can't wait to read the next book and see Emily in action again.

Anyone looking for their next great read should pick up a copy of this book. You won't regret it.

Adequate

Some good imagination and plot twists. There were also some grammar and or spelling issues. There were some continuity issues with the plot.

Overall, an entertaining read.

How many pages must I read to count this? Ugh. DNF. How can this have such a high goodreads rating? Terrible writing. Hackneyed characters and language.

Decent book that did not capture my imagination. The organization that the bad guys operated under was not fully explained and the even darker organization of good guys operating behind the scenes was explained even less. The scenes between the 'grandfather' and 'grandson' never developed into a coherent segment of the story. Having said all that, this is a readable book with enough plot turns to keep a reader engaged.
