Estos relatos fueron escritos por Jane Austen entre 1787 y 1793, por lo tanto hay composiciones casi infantiles, aunque hay algunas que revisó posteriormente cuando ya era una escritora madura. Ella misma los reunió en estos tres volúmenes. Estaban destinados al ámbito familiar y no fueron publicados hasta 1922. Debo confesar que lo he terminado en diagonal 🙈 Entiendo el valor de la obra en su conjunto, lo bien que debieron de pasarlo sus familiares al oír estas disparatadas historias, pero se me ha hecho muy cuesta arriba.

This is one of the Cambridge series of Austen's work, so it's an all-out nerdathon. Let me put it this way: there are footnotes and endnotes. And lots of them. Like, only about half of this book is actually written by Austen. If that made you drool (or gave you a Special Feeling I don't want to hear about), get this particular edition.
If you love the idea of teenage Jane Austen goofing off on the page, but don't necessarily need to have every Regency phrase, concept, proper noun, common noun, adjective, adverb, conjunction-junction, and Austen-breakfast-of-choice explained in detail, grab one of the more affordable and less nerdarific editions of Austen's juvenilia. There are plenty to choose from.
Oh -- and bear in mind that this edition doesn't include Lady Susan. Whether that strikes you as good or bad news is between you and your God. (I know some people detest LS. I happen to find it awesome. I'll be the first to admit I'm weird.)
This is a collection of the many funny things Austen wrote as a teen to amuse herself and her family. If she had only lived long enough to write these tidbits, Austen wouldn't be a household name; but her name would certainly have survived, and nerds like me would be speculating as to what kind of adult work this promising young woman would have produced if she'd only had the chance.
(I realize I just posited a universe without Pride and Prejudice. I have to go make a cup of cocoa and hug my biggest, fluffiest stuffed animal. BRB.)
Do not expect cuteness. Austen's juvenile works are shocking so far as content is concerned. There's murder:
I murdered my father at a very early period of my Life, I have since murdered my Mother, and I am now going to murder my Sister. (from "A Letter from a Young Lady, whose feelings being too Strong for her Judgement led her into the commission of Errors which her Heart disapproved," a title almost longer than the story itself)
Suicide:
It was not till the next morning that Charlotte recollected the double engagement she had entered into [she said yes to two marriage proposals in the space of about ten minutes]; but when she did, the reflection of her past folly, operated so strongly on her mind, that she resolved to be guilty of a greater, & to that end threw herself into a deep stream which ran thro' her Aunt's pleasure Grounds in Portland Place. She floated to Crankhumdunberry where she was picked up & buried; the following epitaph, composed by Frederic, Elfrida & Rebecca, was placed on her tomb.
EPITAPH
Here lies our friend who having promis-ed
That unto two she would be marri-ed
Threw her sweet Body & her lovely face
Into the Stream that runs thro' Portland Place.
Drinking and gambling:

"Per quello che mi riguarda, se un libro è ben scritto, lo trovo sempre troppo corto."
Juvenilia è la raccolta di opere giovanili di Jane Austen. Se seguite il blog da un po', saprete sicuramente che qui siamo tutte appassionate della zia Jane. Io ho letto tutti i suoi romanzi, completi e incompiuti e alcuni anche in lingua originale, alcune delle opere giovanili, le lettere e anche qualche biografia. Mi mancava però il volume completo che contenesse tutte le sue prime opere. Questo volume di Rba li racchiude tutti ed è un ottimo modo per conoscere la Austen più giovane e acerba, ma già estremamente pungente ed ironica.
La raccolta è divisa in tre sezioni; al suo interno troviamo alcuni brevi racconti, frammenti, lettere di vario genere, opere di ispirazione teatrale e molto altro ancora. Alcuni di questi racconti furono scritti quando la Austen era solo un adolescente, e molti di essi sono dedicati ai suoi familiari che, chi più chi meno, la sostennero sempre.
Ovviamente in questi frammenti non c'è tutta la grandezza e la complessità dell'opera matura della Austen, ma se ne intravede già gran parte. Nonostante infatti lo stile sia molto più acerbo e meno approfondito di quello che conosciamo, si intravedono piuttosto bene tutte le doti della scrittrice che sarebbe diventata. Ogni storia è caratterizzata da una pungente ironia, quello che in seguito sarebbe diventato uno dei tratti distintivi della scrittrice.
Devo ammettere che leggere queste opere giovanili mi ha divertita moltissimo; la immagino la piccola Jane che dispensa i suoi racconti tra fratelli, sorelle e parenti vari. Ogni racconto, ogni lettera, ogni piccola presa in giro, rivela qualcosa della Austen e si riflette perfettamente nelle sue opere più famose. Insomma, zia Jane non delude mai, che si tratti di un grande romanzo, di una storia d'amore o dei tanti frammenti di una mente che ha sempre brillato per genialità.

2021- I've finally finished all of Austen's work! Overall had a good time, and I think I will re-read everything again in 2022. Rating- 4 stars.

4 Estrellitas para éste libro de relatos cortos de Jane Austen. Es el que me quedaba pendiente de su obra, y gracias a la última colección de RBA ya tengo todo lo publicado de ella.
Pero leyendo este volumen, he ido recordando algún relato que también incluye una edición publicada hace años llamada "El Castillo de Lesley", aunque éste "Amor y Amistad" es más completo.
Reunidos en 3 volúmenes, la edición nos trae 13 relatos cortos escritos por Jane Austen cuando contaba entre 12 y 18 años. Por ello, son obras de juventud, donde ya se va viendo su estilo y las grandes novelas que acabaría escribiendo.
Algunos relatos son más trabajados y maduros, otros son más infantiles, cortitos y fantasiosos, pero todos a su manera son curiosos, y un reflejo de la época y la sociedad en que le tocó vivir a Jane Austen.
También en éste volúmen, la autora presenta todos los géneros literarios propios de la época, narrativa en prosa, narrativa epistolar, teatro, poesía, y hasta cuentos. Así de versátil era Jane Austen en su juventud.
Los que más puedo destacar (porque más me hayan gustado) se encuentran: "La bella Cassandra", sin duda dedicado a su hermana; "Las tres hermanas", "Amor y Amistad", "El Castillo de Lesley" y hasta "La historia de Inglaterra".
De un modo u otro siempre es un placer leer a Jane Austen, ya sea sus obras cumbre, las inacabadas, o estos relatos de juventud. Nunca dejan indiferente y siempre me reconcilian con los clásicos cuando alguno me deja mal sabor de boca. En general, ésta lectura me ha entretenido y gustado mucho.

Not finished yet, but had to jump in and leave a review because I love this so much.
Comments such as 'not as good as her novels' and 'needs a good editor' are completely missing the point. This is your chance to meet the young teenage Jane, exactly as she wrote, for her family and friends. They are not polished tales, they are thoroughly silly. That's surely the point. I've been laughing outloud at her bathos and sheer outrageousness.

Ha sido muy bonito ver el ingenio cómico e irónico de Jane desde su juventud y niñez. Con esta recopilación, siento que estaba buscando su estilo de escritura, y por ende probó con varios, hasta que (menos mal) dio con las perfectas novelas que conocemos hoy.
Un buen inicio para Austenitas que quieren adentrarse (y llevarse alguna sorpresa) aún más en la obra literaria de Jane.

Los relatos compilados en esta lectura no los disfrute tanto como con el compilado anterior, habían varios repetidos con respecto al ‘El castillo de Lesley’.
El relato principal ‘Amor y amistad’ no lo disfrute, la protagonista es insoportable y su perspectiva de la realidad cae en la justificación de sus acciones. Aunque es divertido por la manera en que toma tantos recursos que eran un boom en su época y lo vuelve una especie de parodia.

Honestly, I can’t decide how to rate Austen’s juvenilia, a reminder, perhaps, that ratings are sometimes arbitrary and nonsensical. Loved reading the wit of a teenage Austen, but I did find it tedious to read all of these stories and scraps, which feels sacrilegious to admit, but I think Austen would understand…if she could get over the fact that strangers from a different century are spending time poring over her unpublished, unedited work!

This book has five of Jane Austen's teenage stories for you to enjoy, courtesy of Oxford University Press. Jane Austen's writings are funny, witty and full of sarcasm and satire. Her writings are clever and one can see that she was going to be quite good as writer.
THE BEAUTIFULL CASSANDRA 4 stars
It's a normal day in Cassandra's life, quite random and really hilarious. Cassandra's day is full of mischief and adventure. She meets many people, paying no heed to anyone. Cassandra started & Maria seemed surprised; they trembled, blushed, turned pale & passed each other in a mutual silence.
AMELIA WEBSTER 3 stars
Amelia Webster is epistolary short story where I kept wondering what's the point. I guess there wasn't really any apart from everyone getting married to someone. And writing letters to one another. The end.
JACK & ALICE 5 stars
This was the most fun thing , full of satire and Humour. There's an eligible bachelor for whom lot of young women are going crazy, he wants someone who is perfect as he is and that leads to lot of drama and fun. There were many moments where I laughed out loud. E.g.
It must be remembered however that her Ladyship had in one’ ‘respect by far the advantage of Alice; I mean in not being drunk, for heated with wine & raised’ ‘by Passion, she could have little command of her Temper.’
Another one To this I received an angry &’ ‘peremptory refusal, but thinking it might be rather the effect of his modesty than any thing else,’ ‘I pressed him again on the subject.

Jane; benim dostum, sırdaşım...
Tanıştığımız andan beri, romanlarının her birini dönüp dolaşıp okur; üzgün, mutlu, dertli, heyecanlı olduğumda kendisinden tavsiyeler alırım. Başıma komik bir şey geldiğinde, garip ya da onun utanç verici olarak tanımlayacağı insanlarla, olaylarla karşılaştığımda kafa kafaya verip güleriz. Öyle de samimiyiz.
Elimde ona dair kalan tek kitap olduğu için ,belki de en önemlisi olan, Gençlik Eserleri'ni okumayı yıllardır erteliyordum. Dayanamadım daha fazla ve hemen bitirmemek için kendimi çok zorlayarak okudum.
Jane ile aramdaki samimiyetin zirvede olduğunu düşünüyorum artık çünkü Jane için ne düşünüyorsam, nasıl hayal ediyorsam onu, öyle bir genç kadın ile karşılaştım. Herkesin bildiği o altı romanı yazan kadın, onları yazacak beceriye nasıl ulaştı, sorusunun cevabını tüm ayrıntılarıyla gösteren öyküler, oyunlar, şiirler hatta tarih metinleri bile var.
Oldukça muzip, cesur, zekice yazılmış eserler her biri. Okurken öyle çok güldüm ki, kitabın bitiyor olmasının verdiği hüznü bile unuttum, son sayfayı çevirene kadar.

Jane ile aramdaki samimiyetin zirvede olduğunu düşünüyorum artık çünkü Jane için ne düşünüyorsam, nasıl hayal ediyorsam onu, öyle bir genç kadın ile karşılaştım. Herkesin bildiği o altı romanı yazan kadın, onları yazacak beceriye nasıl ulaştı, sorusunun cevabını tüm ayrıntılarıyla gösteren öyküler, oyunlar, şiirler hatta tarih metinleri bile var.
Oldukça muzip, cesur, zekice yazılmış eserler her biri. Okurken öyle çok güldüm ki, kitabın bitiyor olmasının verdiği hüznü bile unuttum, son sayfayı çevirene kadar.

Η Jane Austen ασχολήθηκε με το γράψιμο από πολύ μικρή ηλικία. Αυτά τα πρώτα της βήματα τα έκανε σε τρία σημειωματάρια που ευτυχώς για εμάς δεν εξαφανίστηκαν. Αυτά τα μικρά κείμενα, τα διηγήματα και διάφορα άλλα πράγματα υπάρχουν σε αυτό εδώ το βιβλίο. Η αλήθεια είναι βέβαια ότι τα περισσότερα από αυτά τα κείμενα δεν έχουν ιδιαίτερη λογοτεχνική αξία, με εξαίρεση κάποια όπως η απολαυστική εναλλακτική ιστορία της Αγγλίας. Η πραγματική τους αξία όμως είναι ότι μας επιτρέπουν να μπούμε στο μυαλό της έφηβης Jane Austen και να δούμε το ξεκίνημά της για να φτάσει να θεωρείται μία από τις πιο αγαπητές συγγραφείς της ιστορίας.

Even though these are early writings consisting of short stories and sketches made to amuse Austen's family and friends, you can tell she was a very witty young lady. Indeed, it is that wittiness that will define her later novels, and it is awesome to discover that it was always there. Her personality, ironic yet clever, shines through these pieces so, although the stories are unpolished and rushed, they are an amusing reading. She also plays with different genres and styles which I very much enjoyed. Yes, they may lack depth and seem silly, but if you are familiar with Austen's work these are truly fascinating.

Una aproximación a los textos de juventud de Jane Austen de los que (soy sincera) no esperaba gran cosa. Cayó en mis manos en digital porque está incluido en el programa Prime Reading de Amazon y ahora me arrepiento de haber tardado tanto en leerla. Me ha parecido, por encima de cualquier otro adjetivo, genial. Genial y divertido. Un adelanto de la autora que estaba por llegar. Son varios relatos cortos no relacionados, por lo que se lee rapidísimo y se acaban la mayoría con una sonrisa (y alguna carcajada).

Eğer Jane'in klasik 6'lıklarını defalarca dönüp dönüp tekrar okuyan gruptansanız kesinlikle okumanız gereken bir kitap bu. Çünkü aile içindeki neşeli, şen şakrak, kahkahalar attıracak tespitleriyle ve sevimli dalga geçmeleriyle meşhur parlak bir genç kızın "Jane Austen" olmadan önceki tüm bir yolculuğunu anlatıyor bir bakıma. Jane, 11-17 yaşları arasında çoğu zaman bir aile üyesine, bir tanıdığa ithaf/hediye ettiği ufak öyküleri, tiyatro oyunlarını falan ara ara temize çekmiş, ortaya da 3 defter çıkmış. Onun tabiriyle 3 cilt. Bizim bildiğimiz (artık belki de ezberlediğimiz satırlardan oluşan) kitapları ise daha çok bu 17-18 yaşlarından itibaren üzerinde ince ince işlediği metinler. O yüzden bu kocaman kahkahalarla ve absürtlükle dolu genç insanın nasıl olup da bizim ahlak timsali, katı bir mutluluğa varan hikayeler üreticisine dönüştüğünü bir nebze de olsun anlayabilmek için güzel bir şey bu karşımızdaki. Jane'in temize çektiği 3 cilt de içinde kitabın. Ancak 2.cildi oluşturan yazıları daha önce Alakarga Kitap "Aşk ve Arkadaşlık" adı altında yayınlamıştı. Ama o basımda açıkçası ben doğru düzgün bir açıklama edinemediğim için İletişim Yayınları'nın bu kitaptaki açıklamaları, önsöz ve sonsöz yazıları oldukça yararlı oldu.

No es un libro fácil de leer. No encontramos aquí a la Jane Austen que admiramos, solo al proyecto de escritora en que se convertiría. Son pequeños relatos, anotaciones, ideas que iba redactando en su juventud, y que solo se comprende su publicación por la escasez de su obra adulta y la repercusión histórica y mundial de la misma. Por mi parte, resultan demasiado agridulces. Es cierto que apunta maneras, y que el espíritu de la autora está presente, pero son demasiado repetitivos, irónicos a veces hasta rayar la crueldad, y poco aportan a quien conoce sus grandes obras.

This (along with Lady Susan) is one of my last Austen books left to read. In ways it is encouraging to read some of Austen's earliest work, because it shows that she developed her skills, that she wasn't crazy talented right from the off. Reading this as a regular book, however, was pretty hard going. Remembering which story I was reading (as they were usually only a few pages each) was tough, and the stories themselves were mostly pretty unbelievable (a lot of crazy coincidences and such). But like I said, it was enjoyable to read, knowing this was a collection of some of Jane Austen's earliest writings. Just be sure not to expect the same level of skilful storytelling as her full-length novels.

Novel ini berisikan kumpulan kisah yang tidak tuntas dan sebagian lain tuntas yang justru membuat buku ini menjadi unik.
Jane Austen merupakan penulis besar sehingga kisah-kisah yang dia tulis pada masa remajanya saja diabadikan dalam sebuah buku, menurut saya pribadi tidak semua kisahnya menarik tetapi ada beberapa yang saya sukai seperti evelyn dan catharine atau kitty dan punjungnya yang membuat saya penasaran akan kelanjutan ceritanya, terlihat bahwa jane memang berbakat menulis sejak remaja yang pada akhirnya menciptakan novel-novelnya yang populer sepanjang masa..beberapa kisah di dalamnya juga mengingatkan saya akan novel-novelnya seperti pride and prejudice,sense and sensibility, lady susan dan northanger abbey.

hard to leave a rating on this when it’s a ton of short stories and a lot of them are unfinished, but it was really interesting to go back and dive into austen’s works before she began her novels that we all know today. you can easily see the development in her writing style. the wit is one thing that is there and perfect from the very beginning!

Come sempre, si tratta di Jane Austen. E come sempre io sono in adorazione nelle risate più totali con una scrittura sagace come la sua🙏🏻
Gli Juvenilia sono scritti giovanili, a volte incompleti e a volte semplicemente brevissimi, ma sempre ugualmente efficaci. Ho adorato esplorare diverse storie tra romanzo di costume -la strada che poi l’autrice prenderà per i suoi romanzi al completo-, romanzo epistolare, commedia teatrale, frammenti quasi a mo’ di fiabe, e addirittura un excursus storico sui regnanti d’Inghilterra in chiave umoristica, secondo la sua opinione di condotta e morte di ogni posto sul trono.
C’è di tutto, ma il comun denominatore è sempre la risatina sotto i baffi che probabilmente lei faceva mentre scriveva, lanciando sottili frecciatine all’ipocrisia di alcune regole del bon ton inglese e delle diverse possibilità, e quindi anche privilegi, in base alla classe sociale; insieme alle immancabili battute da presa in giro verso alcuni personaggi maschili a rappresentanza della tendenza a sminuire le donne, e perciò il più grande tema dell’emancipazione femminile anche solo da brevi dialoghi botta-e-risposta.
Le protagoniste di queste storie sono esilaranti:
-dai racconti più brevi, come quello sulle false speranze di Emily nello scoprire alla fine della cena che il suo amato non è arrivato con la sua famiglia, una sorta di scherzo dolceamaro sul sentimento amoroso 💝;
-a uno strano matrimonio tra Elfrida e un uomo che la sposa solo per i sensi di colpa vedendo che lei quasi sviene per il cuore spezzato… tutto questo a seguito della scena dirò suicidio di Charlotte che non voleva essere costretta a sposarsi con uno dei tanti spasimanti solo per il dovere di matrimonio dell’epoca 💔;
-alla diversa percezione morale di Eliza che ruba una banconota e, dopo essere stata bandita dalla famiglia, affronta una narrazione che ci fa capire quante strane vicende vivrà da quella piccola azione, come i viaggi in nave, l’essere catturata ma riuscire a salvare i suoi neonati, entrare a un salotto di nobili fino ad arrivare, però, a un divertente sapore di vendetta verso una contessa che non l’ha accolta (frasi come “radunò e fece marciare un Esercito, con la lettera maiuscola, sono assurde AHAHAHA). Anche un personaggio femminile dell’800 può fare cose sbagliate, ma comprensibilmente provenienti da un sentimento di sofferenza, scritto in modo originale in una storia che fa uso dell’iperbole 💥;
-alla triste storia di vita di Laura, che subisce lutti di famiglia e marito, una sofferenza dopo l’altra, mentre deve viaggiare tra Inghilterra e Scozia con solo l’affetto verso una sua amica a consolarla, raccontato come un flusso di coscienza di anni di formazione personale 💌;
-alle avventure rocambolesche del romanzo “La bella Cassandra”, formato da 12 capitoli di circa… tre righe l’uno, in cui ridevo a ogni passo della ragazza tra un furto, una passeggiata nella foresta, e addirittura una scena di autodifesa verso un cocchiere che si fa aggressivo per farsi pagare e verso il quale lei rivolge un “Lei gli mise il suo cappellino in testa e scappò via”. Iconico a dir poco 🙌;
…e molto altro. In più, bonus di dettaglio interessante, molti racconti sono intitolati a una coppia di nome, maschile e femminile, lasciando intendere che ci sia la loro storia d’amore— in realtà però, va a finire che il gentiluomo di turno è a malapena presente in poche righe, o addirittura morto o partito. È una tattica comica e intelligente, una prima anticipazione alla sua futura scrittura che vede sempre i personaggi maschili in funzione di quelli femminili, e mai il contrario (ribaltando ciò che c’è stato per anni nella letteratura sempre fatta da uomini !).
Esempi lampante del suo prendere in giro il genere che detiene il potere in società, sono in due racconti dedicati ai due fratelli dell’autrice:
-“Le avventure di Mr Harley” è fatto di sole 13 righe in cui la narrazione di questo protagonista, che diventa cappellano a bordo di una nave da guerra, descrive la sua andata, i suoi compagni di viaggio e il suo ritorno, concludendo che capisce solo allora che una ragazza a bordo era la moglie “sposata qualche settimana prima di lasciare l’Inghilterra.”
C’è un’ironia pazzesca: è dedicato “con rispetto” al fratello che è diventato un ricco guardiamarina ma prende in giro un uomo proprio su quel mezzo di trasporto, mettendo in ridicolo e pensando “all’assurdo” una situazione che fa parte della quotidianità dei trattamenti che gli uomini riservano alle donne.
Un po’ come per dire che questo potrebbe succedere, e ce lo si potrebbe tristemente aspettare.
Nell’800, come forse anche ora.
-“Sir William Mountague” è dedicato all’altro fratello, ed è anche qui una presa in giro dell’unica vita che fa condurre al protagonista: un uomo che si approfitta di tante donne, cambia moglie per i suoi interessi falsi e rapidi (arrivando a pazzie come uccidere per gelosia e possessione). Vengono denunciate le sue azioni e allo stesso tempo c’è un tono quasi da barzelletta per la velocità con cui vanno avanti i matrimoni e riprende conoscenze, una scrittura che se la prende in modo molto diretto con il classico comportamento da libertino che, ovviamente, agli uomini era concesso e alle donne no.
Ma il senso è: se era concesso fare così, valeva davvero la pena? Uomini del genere sapevano quanto fossero ridicoli e senza rispetto?
Evidentemente no, Jane, ma c’eri tu e il tuo humor pungente a mostrarlo secoli fa.❤️✋
Insomma, un divertimento ma anche una riflessione dopo l’altra. Quello che emerge con chiarezza è che, come dimostrerà ancora meglio nei suoi 6 romanzi, Jane Austen sapeva come dare caratterizzazione a quelle che ha sempre chiamato le sue « eroine », perché era una battaglia anche comprendere i propri sentimenti, fare i conti con le differenze economiche, con la reputazione di ogni debutto in società.
Ancora una volta, leggere i suoi scritti è stata per me la sensazione di comfort di cui avevo bisogno, lei ormai una delle mie comfort authors e mi dispiace aver ufficialmente finito tutto quello che ha scritto.
(Oltre ad invidiare la sua self-confidence, come gli aggettivi di auto-complimento di ciò che ha scritto alle dediche iniziali, o nell’iconica frase all’interno di un racconto stesso: “Questi dolci versi, toccanti quanto belli, non furono letti da nessuno che passasse là senza un profluvio di lacrime, e se a te, Lettore, non dovessero fare lo stesso effetto, il tuo animo è indegno di guardarli”.
Insomma, sapeva di scrivere bene, e si vantava un po’ del voler essere riconosciuta AHAHAHAH, ma glielo concediamo👌)
In ogni caso, questa raccolta non si è fermata ad essere al “libro giusto al momento giusto” per me. Perché, in qualunque racconto, questa scrittrice è la prova che anche le donne potevano scrivere con un tono di comicità e sentimentalismo, senza essere superficiale -come vorrebbe l’associazione dei ruoli dati dalla cultura patriarcale-, ma anzi lanciando messaggi più universali 📜🖋 💗

Quello che emerge con chiarezza è che, come dimostrerà ancora meglio nei suoi 6 romanzi, Jane Austen sapeva come dare caratterizzazione a quelle che ha sempre chiamato le sue « eroine », perché era una battaglia anche comprendere i propri sentimenti, fare i conti con le differenze economiche, con la reputazione di ogni debutto in società.
Ancora una volta, leggere i suoi scritti è stata per me la sensazione di comfort di cui avevo bisogno, lei ormai una delle mie comfort authors e mi dispiace aver ufficialmente finito tutto quello che ha scritto.

In ogni caso, questa raccolta non si è fermata ad essere al “libro giusto al momento giusto” per me. Perché, in qualunque racconto, questa scrittrice è la prova che anche le donne potevano scrivere con un tono di comicità e sentimentalismo, senza essere superficiale -come vorrebbe l’associazione dei ruoli dati dalla cultura patriarcale-, ma anzi lanciando messaggi più universali 📜🖋 💗

mira niña, yo realmente no nací para leer clásicos, por muy hermosas que sean las ediciones. el Martirio que fue leer este recopilatorio de cuentos, historias cortas, divagaciones o no sé qué me hace sentir que le di el ticket al checklist no más, porque de disfrute hubo poco.
casi todas las historias rondan a mujeres tontas, malas o vanas, que creen que sus problemas son los peores, que creen que la vida social determina todo. y, si bien entiendo que esos habrán sido los temas más candentes de la época, no deja de ser molesto y cansador el constante tono moralista de todas y cada una de las personajes. realmente son relatos que rozan el absurdo, todo lo ridículo llevado al extremo. y, si bien puede funcionar en los primeros cuentos, ya por el tercero o cuarto es simplemente agotador.
lo que sí aprecio es haber descubierto el lado más cómico de Austen, que era algo que había leído en biografías o historias sobre ella, pero que no había encontrado en Orgullo y Prejuicio (he visto más películas de sus libros que leído sus obras tbh). entiendo la pasión por escribir historias por el gusto mismo de que otres las lean y se diviertan, y tal vez por eso le perdono un poco, en el alma, su eterna repetición.
eso, léanlo si quieren, si les llama el tema. pero, ante la duda, yo les aconsejo que se abstengan JSJSJS o que lean los dos primeros relatos y ya. les juro que con ellos basta para entender la tónica del libro completo.

lo que sí aprecio es haber descubierto el lado más cómico de Austen, que era algo que había leído en biografías o historias sobre ella, pero que no había encontrado en Orgullo y Prejuicio (he visto más películas de sus libros que leído sus obras tbh). entiendo la pasión por escribir historias por el gusto mismo de que otres las lean y se diviertan, y tal vez por eso le perdono un poco, en el alma, su eterna repetición.
eso, léanlo si quieren, si les llama el tema. pero, ante la duda, yo les aconsejo que se abstengan JSJSJS o que lean los dos primeros relatos y ya. les juro que con ellos basta para entender la tónica del libro completo.

My tutor is an editor of this book, so I'm curious to see how the tutorial discussion will go next week. I'm sure she'll have interesting insights.
What blows my mind is that this is essentially an edited compilation of three of Jane Austen's teenage notebooks, and the first volume is in the Bodleian! The library I now have access to houses Jane Austen's handwritten notebook. That is INCREDIBLE.
This set of short stories, letters, and writings is interesting for how it showcases the development of Austen as a writer, from novice to the author of Pride and Prejudice. The first volume has essentially bare-bones sketches, but volume three has the unfinished novella Kitty, which is a great precursor for her full-length adult novels. It's fascinating to see how these social topics have long preoccupied Austen and inspired her, amd it's a privilege to witness her writing become far more sophisticated and fleshed out.
