You love the sweetness in his little smile and the way she wiggles her tiny toes in delight. You love the beautiful chaos that your life has become. And then come the challenges of motherhood. The exhaustion. The frustration. In A Pocketful of Hope for Mothers, Robin Jones Gunn reminds us that as moms, the only thing we need to do each day is to live with a selfless spirit, a tender heart, and all the gusto our giddy souls can muster. She reminds us that no matter how fragmented our lives may feel right now, all that matters is that we love well. God is near, giving us encouragement and hope as we care for the little soul that has been entrusted to us. This collection of heartwarming vignettes, inspiring quotes, and simple prayers makes a perfect gift of inspiration for all mothers and moms-to-be.

This book is absolute perfection. If you're a mother who believes in God and needs a little pick-me-up, well, here it is! 😊
'My daddy was the son of a Kentucky coal miner. When he was in a jovial mood, you could hear him singing around the house, "Sugar in the morning, sugar in the evening, sugar at suppa' time."
I smile now when I think of it because I can't imagine any mama in this generation singing to her children about sugar.
Now it's more like "Pesticide-free bananas in the morning, homegrown squash in the evening, organic, free-range, gluten-free, non-GMO, fair-trade chicken at suppertime."' 😂😂😂
This is a very sweet and tender gift book for mothers with bright and cheerful illustrations. A combination of Bible verses from different translations, quotes, original poetry, and vignettes from RJG both now (as a grandmother writing to her daughter and daughter-in-law) and then (as a young mother of a son and daughter). While not all of the poetry was to my taste I enjoyed the vignettes very much. The short length (no essay more than three pages) makes it easy to dip in and out of. This is one to keep on standby as a shower gift for a new mom.

A Pocketful of Hope for Mothers, written by Robin Jones Gunn, illustrated by Lauren Lowen, and published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. is a wonderful collection of short stories, thoughts, poems, Bible quotes, and illustrations that offer wisdom, reminders, and hope to moms at all stages of motherhood. This hardcover book may only be 128 pages but it is full of hope!
I enjoyed reading all the entries and poems about Gunn's children as well as her reminders to trust, delight, dream, and hope. These serve as a good refresher for moms of older children as well as new moms with infants.
I found artistry in Gunn's words – they paint such a beautiful picture. For example, in "More Than," she writes, "(You are) more than a diaper-changing station or a twenty-four-hour concession stand." Sometimes that is all I feel like with regards to my smaller children. But we are "more than" these things. We are "more than" enough "through Him who handcrafted" us. (23)
I think one of my favorite parts was the story entitled, "Deep, Cleansing Breaths." I actually laughed out loud when Gunn revealed the reason why women learn how to breathe during Lamaze class.
My only complaint is that some of the quotes are difficult to read as they are printed in white lettering on a light pastel background.
I would purchase this book for friends and family – new moms and moms of grown children. I think it would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift. If someone were to have gifted me a copy of A Pocketful of Hope for Mothers, it would have become a treasured book to refer to frequently for hope. I am very happy to have it sitting on my shelf!
This is a beautiful book that would be a welcome addition to any mother's nightstand or morning basket to help provide them with hope on those days when life seems too busy or too heavy. It only takes a few minutes to read each story or poem, so it is perfect for quickly lifting up the reader.
I don't read a lot of nonfiction books, but Robin Jones Gunn is a favorite author of mine. I've read and loved several of her nonfiction books, and since my mommy heart needed a boost, I leapt at the chance to read A Pocketful of Hope for Mothers!
It's gorgeous!
First of all, look at that artwork! If I could, I'd frame each page. They are so beautiful! There's even a little Christy Miller artwork. <3 <3 <3
While I loved the Bible verses, prayers, and quotes, my favorite parts were the short accounts Robin Jones Gunn included from her journals as her children were growing up and started having children of their own. ("Fluffy Tea in the Tub" is my favorite.) You will feel so connected to this woman who has experienced some of the same struggles and triumphs in motherhood as you.
Which I suppose is kind of the point... ;-)
While you laugh and cry, you will feel a beautiful restoration of your spirit as God whispers His loving truths to you, dear mama. So get a cup of "fluffy tea" and start reading!
Five Stars ~ Simply beautiful! A lovely book that I'll read again and again whenever I need its loving truths, and one I think every mother would benefit from reading.

A Pocketful of Hope for Mothers is a delightfully illustrated book full of wisdom, encouragement, stories, scripture references, and humor. I love that the book is written in two parts. The first for the new mom and the encouragement that is so important as a new mom adjusts to life with a tiny baby. The second part emphasises the continued journey of life as a mom. Throughout both parts Robin Jones Gunn includes much of her own poetry with quotes from others and scripture from the Bible to encourage moms as the embark on their new journey of motherhood.
I think Pocketful of Hope for Mothers would make a sweet gift for a new mom. I can see this being the perfect little bit of happy to leave after visiting a new mom and baby in the hospital or to include with a meal as they adjust to a new normal. Perfect for leaving beside a rocking chair for a little dose of encouragement during those late night wake up calls.
Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I absolutely love Robin Jones Gunn's writings. I first found her when I began reading the Sisterchick stories. She has a way with words and wit bringing women together through verse. I usually read fiction but when I saw this cute and most charming book I knew I had to read it! Ms. Gunn has a way of gently touching our souls with words of wisdom. This smallish book is filled with lovely art work and words of encouragement. In today's world what mothers need most is encouragement! There are stories, there are poems, there are sayings by other people , there are scriptures but most of all there is encouragement for the worn out and tired mom. This book makes a wonderful gift for Mother's Day, for a new mom or simply for the mom who is tired. Here is a sample of one of the pages:
See how cute and encouraging the pages are. Love this book because it is A Pocketful of Hope for Mothers.
What a perfect book for a Mother's soul! This book is such a beautiful, colorful and encouraging book filled with perfect little snippets that a Mom can quickly read to encourage and inspire. I know I found this book to be so encouraging and uplifting, filled with insightful quotes and wonderful tidbits that stay with you long after you put it down. It is so easy to get overwhelmed and trodden down with being a Mom and this book is there to help uplift and encourage and it really does that in such a simple and beautiful way. The illustrations are cheerful and uplifting and the words are profound, this book would make a beautiful gift to encourage and uplift one of the Mother's in your life.
