Dragons' Bane #2

Dragons' Might

Rate this book
Finding yourself right back at square one is never easy. For Lena Maye, it’s downright devastating. Even with the one person who could lead her to her father presumed dead, and a power-hungry empress holding half of her teammates captive, her only wish has been to return to a normal life one day and see her father again. However, with the Bane once again free and tension building not only between their two countries, but amongst her own teammates, it’s becoming clear that no one else is willing to sit around and wait for a leader who might never show. Instead, with a risky plan in place and secret threats made, they plot to travel to her home country, both to rescue their friends and to search out the one thing that may possibly stop the Bane. But they’re not the only ones who are after these ancient powers. And the Empress is closer to her goals than even she realizes. The race for the world is on.

This was a reread for me, so I can't give my first impression of this book. But, through my reread, my love for this book has only increased.

Dragons' Might is the sequel to Dragons' Bane, and what a wonderful one it is. We get to see more POVs in Might, more character interactions, more world building, and further progressed characters arcs.

My absolute favorite thing about this book are the friendships in it. There are so. many. friendships. I absolutely love seeing the team interact and support each other and miss each other. I love seeing their determination and loyalty, their protectiveness, their willingness to call one another out.
All together the friendships are just so strong and beautiful, and I absolutely love them.

I also love seeing them bend and break, seeing them challenged, seeing them act not quite like they normally would but still undeniably themselves. It is so fitting for the setting and situations that these characters face, and it was done quite well.

Finally, Blaze and Lena's character arcs have both progressed in this book whereas they were only at the beginning in Dragons' Bane (which is fitting, as it only the first book). So, their interactions, their reactions, their decisions, their mistakes, their victories, are all a little different now, being in progress of their respective arcs.

While I did not have a huge issue with Blaze and Lena in the first book (knowing that their development and arcs were still at the beginning for the sake of the story), I know that quite a few readers did.
So if you're hesitant on picking up the sequel due to your impression of the first book, rest assured that all of the cast in DM is in the progress of growing up a little, development and arc-wise, Blaze and Lena especially.

This is a great book and sequel, worth a read and a reread.

Dragons’ Might is a much grittier, darker sequel to Dragon’s Bane, but light and hope and redemption are beautifully woven in to make something rather unique. The characters are stronger than Dragons’ Bane: our protagonists gain far more depth and side characters also gain far more spotlight and depth, giving the story more nuance. I felt like I was formerly introduced to the rest of the cast for the first time and grew quite fond of a few. The setting is no longer limited to The Mountain and I appreciated all the new sights and places that the book brings us to. Just like the characters, the world becomes more tangible.

The beginning was very good and it carried well for a while (pacing is much-improved!) but there was a few chapters in the middle third that sagged for a while. But, thankfully, right as I was genuinely bored it began picking up faster and faster until it was very gripping. There were several scenes that genuinely moved me and characters that I grew to love.

As I said before, it’s a gritty book and rather violent, too. Usually I’m repelled by things like that, but this one is different. It’s gritty, but not ‘dark’. Yes, the circumstances and pasts and secrets are all very dark, but there is light mingled in, and hope, and redemption (the author is Christian and there’s many Christian themes woven in, though it’s not a ‘religious’ book). The dark does not exist for the sake of darkness, but to demonstrate the light in the midst of it and I love that. The violence isn’t detailed or gratuitous or meant to evoke a shock reaction, but it definitely is there. There’s no swearing, sexual content or even romantic relationships (there’s lots of selfless love, but not the romantic kind, which is a nice break from the average YA book. A romantic subplot would feel odd in the circumstances of the book).

Violence warning (spoilers):

My consensus: definitely recommended! It’s a genuinely good and not a mediocre book(!!!) and its flaws are mild, just a few typos and a few slower chapters in the middle (in comparison to some more polished books that have really nothing special about them). It’s definitely not forgettable and I loovve it’s themes. Engaging for the most part and the characters are very complex and well-done.

I'm a huge dragon lady which is why I was so excited to read this series. The prequel ended with an epic cliffhanger that made me want to jump on the sequel immediately and I did. The character development of the main protagonists were expounded in this book especially since their tragic backstories were introduced here. There were just instances when the flashbacks and POVs shifted too much that it became a bit challenging to focus.

The characters were complicated but it made the story more interesting. I loved that about this, however, there are moments when I find myself asking myself who's real and who's imaginary, but the suspense made me want to turn the page faster, which is why I didn't go back to a page or two to clarify those questions. I'm considering doing a re read if I could to settle some of the confusion I had but overall it was an epic adventure I was glad to have embarked on.

I do wish that the story focused on dragons and their relationship with the characters more especially since that's one of the things I'm looking for in a dragon novel but I could understand why that the focus of the story is on the bane (the first book is entitled, Dragons' Bane after all).

Dragons' Might was a fantastic sequel to a wonderful first book. The characters keep you guessing and you never quite know what is coming. Emotional, surprising and with a touch of betrayal, this book will suck you in and hold you captive until the end. Can't wait to see how the series ends!
