Sid Love grew up in one of busiest cities in the world, Mumbai, listening to the excerpts of Indian epics as told by his father every night. While it served as an inspiration back, he has always had an ambitious mind.
In 2007, when he had just turned sixteen, he decided that he would make his lifelong dream come true—to become a well-known, respected author someday.
Ask him and he would refuse to accept that he is obsessed with books. Or movies. Or TV shows. Addicted may even be the right word.
He is a die-hard fan of Jane Austen’s romance novels and loves to reread them time and again.
What a strong and captivating start of this story... Austin working hard at a bar just to keep his and his moms head up. He hates is when it's almost closing time because then his personal tormentor will approach from behind..... He is living with his mom and when he gets home after.....his nightmare just continues....on and on it goes.
He has to leave town...no way he can stay.... running.....barefooted.... To Denver... That's the place where his only family lives.....not.... So...Denver....no money...no home....no shoes....no nothing Then he meets Dylan
Dylan's car gets bashed by two guys and Austin jumps in...injuries his feet by the glass and Dylan give him some first aid. When Austin looks in his bright emerald eyes.....
One way or another they just keep meeting each other... Damn.. there is a lot of story I will not give away, please read it yourself Family business, work, weekends off, party's....friends...and.... enemies His cousin Liana and here roommate Amy take also a great part in this journey. Two funny crazy adorable woman...always bitching, friends to the bones.
It's getting complicated, there are mixed feelings and lies you wouldn't have guessed. Dylan as a pornstar, looks and acts like a man but he is more complex than a bunch of wires, also a bit unstable and unpredictable now and then... And Austin damn so timid and to much thinking instead to speak up for himself, it made me sad. He is such a sweet guy....but he really has to be honest...all those lies...yes unwilling but still. Again a lot of story, turns you wouldn't expect. All entertaining. I loved the writing style, the way the words are put together, real, raw and somehow sweet. Austin and Dylan flawed and damaged and so endearing. Dylan struggling with words and feelings around Austin.. The story started real strong and stayed steady, in the middle a tiny bit less, maybe because it was a lot to handle, and then again stronger. Really a captivating story with unexpected turns. And for the ones who can't live without it (me..me :) they have their HEA, thank god *wipe sweat from forehead*
I really loved this complicated story and will look for other books by this author
The author took on some heavy subject matter in this book like rape, suicide, & sex industry work. In regards to these three themes in the book, I have no complaints. I thought the author handled them in the sensitive way they deserved (for this type of romance), and did not take them lightly.
Dislikes:
What killed this book for me was too much pointless filler with subplots, side characters, & unnecessary details. Also, there were many things that I found really odd that made no logical sense to me, which prevented me from getting into this story.
Overall:
The author does have obvious potential, but some fine-tuning is definitely needed (IMO). I would recommend this only to those that enjoy multiple stories within a story involving different characters, and also don't mind mundane everyday life type of details throughout the book.
2 stars -- Sid Love's Detour is one of those books that I found myself being irked at many times, but I kept reading because I wanted to see how the larger plot turned out, hoping against hope that it would turn out to redeem the book as a whole.
Detour isn't a bad story in itself, but the story structure and storytelling style got in the way of my ability to enjoy it as much as I wanted to. Put simply, there was just too much going on and too many unnecessary plot elements that ultimately distracted from the development of the story I wanted to know more about. I kept getting the impression that the author had originally written this as a short novella and then decided to add all sorts of dramatic scenes to bulk it up to novel length. Unfortunately, these added scenes did little at best to further the development of the plot, the characters, and the primary relationship, and some of these added scenes resulted in some character inconsistencies, unrealistic plot developments, and loose ends that the story failed to address.
The story structure employed in the book didn't help with my ability to suspend disbelief either. In many ways, the book has the feel of a true serial that has been smooshed into a novel: many of chapters, for example, end with a dramatic "mini-cliffhanger" that comes out of nowhere. While this is fine for keeping people hooked until the next installment is released, when they're clumped together in a full novel, it can be more than a little incredulous to the reader. Worse, the fact that several of the early chapter-ending cliffhangers did not end up relating back to the larger plot meant that when these mini-cliffies started having a real purpose later in the book, I kept finding myself rolling my eyes and thinking "another one, really?!" when I should have been drawn into the suspenseful nature the author intended for them to have.
In case it isn't obvious, I have a problem with drama for drama's sake, and Detour has more than its fair share. In order for its presence to be justified in a story, drama needs to accomplish something that develops the characters, the relationships between characters, and/or the overall plot, and when it's there, it needs to be fully developed to make sure it's real and believable. When it doesn't, it alienates readers like me who need more than just drama to keep them reading.
All that being said, I want to say again that there was a good story buried in Detour, and if you're willing to wade through all the drama to see it, you could well like the book more than I did. While the author has released some novellas in the past, this is his first full novel. I hope that when he writes his second, he tries to keep his good story from getting lost because of some misguided need to make it flashier. If that happens, I'll look forward to reading it.
Note: If you are concerned about the rape scene mentioned in the blurb but want to read the book, the scene itself isn't particularly graphic, but you can instead read this spoiler and then start with chapter 2 (and be forewarned, I put this book on a shelf called "dramarama" for a reason):
The author and/or publisher generously provided me a complimentary copy of Detour in exchange for this fair and honest review.
Daytime nightmares are the only thing Austin knows. He lives them every day he goes to work. His bosses’ son Caleb makes sure of it. Ever since Caleb returned home, he’s been raping Austin. Austin needs his job to support him and his Mother. His Mother suffers from bipolar disorder. So, he has endured the wrath of Caleb to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. On the day of his Mother’s funeral, Austin is forced to leave everything behind when he fights off another one of Caleb’s advances. He leaves his small town to find his childhood friend now living in Denver. Austin meets Dylan the first day he’s in Denver. Time and again Austin and Dylan run into each other. When Austin’s life is in danger he turns to Dylan for comfort and support. Their feelings for each other grow more intense as they fight off the dangers that are trying to keep them apart.
From the beginning, you can sense the darkness in this story. This story deals with adult rape, suicide, kidnapping and attempted murder. Although these situations aren’t trigger issues for me, they could be for other readers. These situations are very serious. It warms my heart when an author can bring to the forefront that it is possible to get past the pain, suffering, anger, sadness, hurt, devastation and any other feelings that may come up. There's always unanswerable questions as to why anyone should have to endure these things. There are fantastic programs out there if you or anyone you know needs to get help. There are many supporting characters to keep the story flowing. However, I feel like this caused the story to become a bit wordy in some areas. Bonus, the story does end in multiple HEA’s. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
**ARC RECEIVED FOR HONEST REVIEW** OK, so, this is the first book I've read by this author meaning I'd got no idea what to expect. I'm so glad I took the chance and read this amazing story. Right from the start this pulled me in. Austin is such a sweet and vulnerable character, the things he goes through are horrendous. Then we've got Dylan.......He tries to help Austin but, due to what's happened to Austin prior to them meeting, he finds it hard to accept the help. What follows is a pretty intense story line. Overall I thought this was a fantastic story, I loved how it was written but did feel at times, especially near the end, that the story got rushed slightly. I'll definitely be reading more by this author, that's for sure!!
Received for an honest review. I never read any of Sid Love's books so I was looking forward to reading Detour.
I didn't know the story was in first person and I struggled a bit in the beginning. However, I pushed on and really enjoyed the book. There are some difficult topics addressed throughout but those made the story what it was.
There is one part where I yelled at my e-reader because one of the characters really ticked me off. To me, any emotion like that, while reading a story is good.
Being a blogger you’d think I would have learned to read the full blurb, but nope I see something I like or hear about and I am all over it. Actually if I’m honest I am pleased I never read the blurb because it would have deterred me from reading this fantastic story.
The rape scene did have me upset but not as bad as I thought it would have. I think because this Author has written it with care and immediately drew me into the story, as well as given me a time out from the harshness that is all to real in this world.
So, many events happened in this book. It’s full of twists that are very unexpected. The characters are well developed, they each have a role to play and each of them play it so well. This story is ultimately about Austin Reyes and Dylan Carver, but the secondary and even the third characters are equally as important in reading this book.
Austin Reyes is a young man with his whole life ahead of him, but he’s being held back from leading that life. Not because his mother is poorly although she does depend on him a lot, but the fact that other evil influences surrounding Austin keep him from becoming the man he was meant to be.
Austin has so much to deal with, at work he puts up with more than anyone should ever have to. At home he’s looking after for his mother. No social life to speak of, friends are nowhere to be seen. He leads a very lonely existence.
When Austin can’t take any more abuse he leaves his home town of Easton. It’s scary to read and I was praying he’d be alright. Leaving all he has known without a penny to his name, but I was also relieved he was seeking more.
Dylan Carver has a profession I would have never in a million years have guessed. I have to say it brought some very sexy scenes into this story. Just…. WOW, so so good.
Dylan is attracted to Austin I was certain of it. I knew Austin found Dylan sexy, who wouldn’t, but I wasn’t one hundred percent sure if anything would happen between them.
With twists at every corner life was unknown, scary at times, definitely unpredictable. Police, FBI, murder, rape, porn, relationships both M/M and M/F and even F/F. This book has it all.
I hope you read and meet Austin and Dylan’s friends. Every single one of them has a voice that speaks to you. There are two characters that you will instantly dislike but that is, oh, so natural.
There is so much I can say about this book, but I’m finding it difficult to not give any spoilers out. If you love gay romance and like your stories to have plenty of twists in it. Then this is the book for you. Happy reading.
Austin’s life is pure hell, he’s raped on a daily basis by his boss’ son, his mother is bipolar, and he needs his job to provide her medications. One night, when Caleb tries to rape him (again), his father saw them. Caleb lies, declaring Austin was the one who corrupted him and raped him. Austin tries to tell the truth, but it’s too late, he loses his job at the bar. When he comes back to his home, tired, hurt, beat, he finds his mother dead. She’s killed herself after she discovered what Austin had been through. Alone, traumatized, scared, and mourning his mom, Austin is attacked the next night after the funeral by Caleb. Caleb tries to rape him, and this time, Austin fights back and runs.
This book is about how you survive and heal when your life is hell.
This story was beautiful. We follow Austin and how he tries to stand up for himself. How he tries to heal from his past. Heal with his friends, heal with loves, and heal with confidence.
The author did a great job, it wasn’t a “whining” book on how poor Austin is hurt. Not at all, yes, it’s a love story, but it’s also a thriller, and I enjoyed it. The MC’s aren’t perfect, any of them. And I liked it a lot, I’m tired of the MC’s where one is Mr Perfection and the other Mr. Neurotic.
Austin does incomprehensible things sometimes, and Dylan is far away from being the perfect knight in shining Armor. And yes, I confess, I wanted to slap them, you know, like when you’re watching a movie and the MC does stupid things and you yell “Why did you do that !!!” but 5 minutes later, he does something adorable, and you forget his previous stupidity. Well, it was the same here, even if they annoyed me, it was never too long, and together they are perfect. They spend the book healing each other from their past, their mistakes, their wounds.
The writing is dynamic, the plot interesting. I was hooked on the story at the beginning and couldn’t stop until I finished the book.
***I would like to thank the author for the privilege and opportunity of reading this ARC. My review is an honest opinion of the book***
I received a copy of Detour for an honest review. I totally enjoyed Detour. I thought the MCs, Dylan and Austin were interesting and flawed. I like that issues both had weren’t resolved quickly and that they also weren’t the only part of the story. There were several secondary characters that added colour to the story. I don’t want to give anything away, but I liked the pace and the flow was definitely a romance. And there were plenty of interesting turns and twists. I would totally recommend this book.
This is the book that if you pause to blink, just for a nanosecond, you will miss something. Truly, the twists and turns were around every corner, almost every chapter. Poor Austin, the guy must have felt like he lived in the Twilight Zone because every time he tried to move on from the horror of his past, something else popped up that kept him connected to it.
Before I get to the review, let me just say, and this is just my honest opinion so take it with a grain of salt, I think the blurb needs to be condensed just a bit so that the reader can actually unravel the story. I believe the rape needed to be mentioned so that readers can make an informed choice to read, or not, but let’s not give away too much of the story, yeah? Also, there is a bit of English/British interchanging terminology. It didn’t take me out of the story, but it was noticeable. Now, onto the review.
One of the things that kept me invested in this story was the fact that I had no idea how it was going to end, or what drama was lurking around the next corner. It was a bit unrealistic that so much was connected, but kind of genius, too. I kept flip flopping back and forth in my mind whether it worked or if it was just too much. I decided it worked and went with it. The one thing I try to do is not assume and just let the author tell their story. I tend to enjoy it more when I let that happen.
For a while, I was unsure if Dylan and Austin would ever actually get together romantically, so I went back to the blurb, saw that yep they were couple, and went back to the story and bided my time. They ended up being a really sweet couple, and worth the wait. They just had way too many secrets and baggage to unload first. They also needed a lesson in communication…but that is where their way over the top friends come into play. Meet Amy, Liana, Eddie, Trevin, and Sharon.
I must admit, I liked the idea of Amy, but her first scene was kind of off-putting. It was so far out there that I still cannot see that as being even remotely realistic. She does grow on you, but her vulgar ways were not very endearing. Liana was cool, though. Austin needed at least one semi-stable friend/roommate. Trevin and Sharon were worth their weight in gold, you just don’t realize that at first.
But the gist of the story is the mystery of who is after Austin, who wants him dead, and why? Also, what was going to become of Caleb, and would Austin get justice for his battering and rape at Caleb’s hand. He truly was a psychopath. For a while I thought the Caleb aspect would remain a sad history that Austin would have to live with, but rest assured, he gets his, and after a book full of non-stop drama and unexpected coincidences, Austin and Dylan finally get their happy ending, too.
If you never understood how karma works, this is the book for you. If you do understand how karma works this is the book for you. If you are karma, then this book is about you. Austin is a young man for whom everything in his life seems to go wrong. He is gay and tries to hide his secret while he works in a local bar struggling every day to support his mother and eke out a life for the two of them in small town Eaton. Each night, before he can go home, he is sexually assaulted by his boss’ son Caleb. One night it all goes to hell and he loses his job only to find his mother has committed suicide. If you think it couldn’t get worse, you’re wrong. Austin soon finds himself on the run barefoot and disheveled heading to Denver where he hopes he will find help from an old friend. In Denver he finds, not only his old friend, he makes new ones who want to help him move forward with his life. Enter Dylan, an out and proud, successful, somewhat infamous porn star. When Austin stops the criminal defacement of Dylan’s car, he is injured and Dylan renders first aid. In no time at all these two men, slowly develop a relationship that has more ups and downs than a rollercoaster. What else can you expect from two people trying to move forward while simultaneously hiding their pasts. Secrets do make one sick, don’t they? Worse yet, for Austin, is someone is trying to kill him! The true star of this book is Karma. It is often said you get back what you dish out. In Detour, the characters in this book all get it back in spade, especially Austin. His turn of fate will truly amaze you! Now, you know I don’t kiss and tell so you’ll have to read the book to find out how. This is the kind of story that has all the ingredients of a good novel and I enjoyed that. The character development is solid and the storyline moves forward in a constant and comprehensive manner. My favorite characters, however, were two of the supporting characters, Liana and Amy. Often their story seemed to upstage Austin and Dylan, instead of supporting them. The story does contain minor (in my opinion) violence and implied sexual assault. By that, I mean, the author did not find it necessary to describe each of the gory details. This I found refreshing and a welcome change from some of what is out there lately. I personally think there are more turns in the road for these characters and will be watching to see if Sid Love allows the creative flow to continue. I received and ARC copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This was such an interesting book. It’s one of those stories where there are many strands, all woven together – no more like a plant with shoots flying out all over the place, sometimes winding around other shoots and sometimes turning around and weaving themselves together in surprising way. I can’t deny there were times when I lost my place a little as the book tends to skip large periods of time with only a scene break. I found this a bit distracting and, more than once, I was confused about when and where the action was taking place. This was not, however enough to turn me off the story. I really enjoyed the characters in this because they weren’t perfect. Austin is severely damaged by experiences that make it difficult for him to have sex and culminate in his mother’s suicide. Dylan is a porn star and an almost recovering alcoholic, Amy is in love with Lianne, hiding it by throwing herself at men, and Lianne is in love with an assassin. They’re all beautifully screwed up. Austin (Aka Teeny Aka Oz) is my favourite character. He’s damaged and thinks himself weak and pathetic, but he’s not. Just to have kept his sanity and got to where he is proves he’s stronger than he thinks. He’s always thinking of other people and taking responsibility for everyone’s lives. I see a lot of myself in him, which I probably why I empathise. Dylan is a rock. He’s also flawed, but he’d far more stable and sound than Austin and despite a few false starts he’s steady in his love and support. Amy and Lianne are hilarious. They are clearly the best of friends. In the beginning, Amy is…to say she throws herself at men is an understatement. When Austin first meets her, she pins him to the sofa and rubs her boobs in his face (Oh no, not boobs! Austin hates boobs, at least when they’re being rubbed on his body). There are other bit-part actors (probably recruited by Trev through the magic of porn) and they’re all well drawn and vivid. The story is generally well paced, although it has a habit of speeding up at times, and making time jumps which catch you unawares. All in all, this is a sometimes frustrating but always entertaining book and is thoroughly a romance through and through with not too many bad things happening and a lot of angsty kissing
Detour by Sid love is the first book I have read by this author and I was captivated from the very first word! Rarely you wish you could award more than five stars and this is one of those occasions. The characters are alive on the page, you can almost touch them. The characters also invoke strong feelings in the reader, those characters you like, love, dislike and hate! The plot is so interesting and full of twists and turns which makes it almost impossible to put down. You know you've become engrossed in a book when you almost feel you are living the story. Austin has gone through so much but always tries to make the best of what he's got. He moves away from his home town to try and change his life. Dylan although some people object to what he does he's happy with his life. When he meets Austin he knows it can't work even though he feels the attraction. However fate has other ideas, they are thrown together continually, will they eventually crack? Can two people who need to heal themselves get together and last? There are so many emotions going through you when you read this book. This book will make you sad, happy, laugh and cry which in my book makes it an amazing read. I will definitely be looking out for Sid Love again as I think the author will become one I look for regularly. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book and I'm so glad I did it's amazing!
I enjoy reading books with flawed heroes and the characters in Detour make plenty of mistakes. I found the writing style very easy to read, and the story flowed well. The settings and characters were easy to visualize, and I really liked the secondary characters especially Amy and Liana. I enjoyed the fact that they had their own HEA to pursue. The bad guy was really horrible—but then he’s meant to be. Detour brings to home the importance of family and their influence in a person’s life, which I think is one of its strengths.
I did find the plot a little predictable in places although that didn’t stop me from continuing to read to find out what happened next. I also had some reservations about the decisions some of the characters made considering what they’d just been through, and found myself thinking “seriously, why would you do this?” in places, but I figure people make mistakes and that is part of what makes these characters come across as human. Although I felt the story was more of a HFN with a hint of HEA in the future, as the characters still have a way to go on their journey to work through their experiences, I felt satisfied with that, and it worked well for the story.
I’d recommend Detour to readers who enjoy contemporary romance with flawed characters, well developed secondary characters, and a strong sense of family.
Detour is a dark, m/m romance that starts off with a disturbing rape scene that some readers may find triggering. However, it is not gratuitous or glamorised, and is necessary for the story.
Austin is a young man, looking after his bipolar mother, enduring what he has to because he needs to keep his job. Of course, things don't go according to plan, and everyone has their limit. Things happen and Austin reaches his. He ends up leaving home without anything - no wallet, no coat, not even any shoes. It is, however, the best thing he has done so far.
With an amazing cast of characters that change and support each other throughout, this book is full of twists and turns, added extras to keep the readers' interest. And it does! I think Sid Love has managed to convey pretty much every emotion going in this book, and all done perfectly.
Detour doesn't start off very nice, but I applaud the author for bringing to light such subjects as are mentioned in this story.
If you can make it through rape, kidnapping and attempted murder, then I can assure you that this book is most definitely worth a read. Absolutely recommended by me.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *
This was my first book by Sid Love, and for the most part I enjoyed it. There is a lot going on in this book.... a lot. At times I paused to think back to try to remember if I had missed something somewhere because of the pace of the happenings. There are quite a few different characters to meet and keep track of also, but all in all it turned out to be a neat little mystery that kept me guessing and wondering exactly who the culprits were. Austin and Dylan are very likable characters as are Amy and Liana. I enjoyed watching Austin go from not such a strong person when his life basically imploded at the beginning of the story, which was painful to witness as you often wondered while reading it, just how much one person could endure; to a much stronger person emotionally at the end. I wish there were better explanations to some of the characters actions but for the most part it was shown eventually down the story line. If you're looking for a story with lots of action and one that keeps you guessing, then you'll enjoy this one :)
Well, what can I say? When I read the first couple of chapters I was like OMG, this is going to be a devastatingly, upsetting read. I was quite tearful, but then I knew where the author was going with this story and I became gripped.
Austin Reyes is such a lonely soul and his life goes from bad to worse, making him flee from his home town to find a friend from his past. That's when he unexpectedly comes across a fit hottie, by the name of Dylan Carver, as he stops to help him out.
Later, when their paths cross again, is when things get interesting. The 'Will they? Won't they?' kept it interesting. They have ups and downs along the way and, without giving too much away, you will have to read it to find out if they finally get their HEA.
This is the first book I've read from this author and it certainly left me wanting more, especially if there's a Book 2 for Austin and Dylan!! Plus the other characters in the book are quite funny (especially Amy) and they could easily have books of their own. I certainly would love to find out where Amy and Liana's lives lead them....
There was a lot happening in this book, some of it very over the top or related to secondary characters and which detracted the attention away from Austin's story. I liked Austin a lot, I felt so sorry for all he had to go through, especially with Caleb, his boss's son, who was a psychopath obsessed with him. And I liked Dylan, Austin's love interest, and think they had good chemistry. I would've have liked that the author had devoted more time to their relationship, though, and not get lost in some details that weren't as relevant to the mystery of Austin's killer's plot.
Anyway, the book was entertaining, for the most part, there are a few scenes that might be considered triggering, so tread with care. Sid Love wove a very complex, well-written story, with a lot of characters, and managed to keep me wondering who the killer was, I so didn't see that coming, btw!
Recommendable!
*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie for my reading pleasure, a review wasn't a requirement. ***
The very first scene captured my attention and I was hooked from then on. The fear and hopelessness experienced by Austin is palpable. His grief and pain is almost excruciating. He is a sympathetic character from the very first page. The author gives us a well fleshed out character in Austin. Dylan's character goes from good to bad to good for me. He is drawn as confident and worldly but kind, and with bits of vulnerability and childishness thrown in. He also experiences pain but hides it behind a false bravado and an ability to lash out to those he is most vulnerable with. It is lovely to see the author ease them into love with each other. The spicy parts are well done. The secondary characters are well placed and supportive to the story line. There is a good flow and the HEA is satisfying. I will read more from this author.
I am voluntarily reviewing the advance reader copy I received from the author.
*** I received an ARC of the book from the author for the purpose of a review. All opinions are my own and no compensation has been given. ***
I feel like the description of the book reveals a bit too much! But once you move past that , the overall plot of the book is pretty good. Lots of twists
I feel like Austin, while emotionally challenged, is very judgemental. He does have a horrible boss and I feel so badly for him. The things he goes through...Then comes Dylan...he fights his attraction every step of the way lol. Once he realizes he does have feelings though he's scared. Poor kid. He needs to stand up for himself more too. I really enjoyed the little side secret feelings a certain someone has for another secret someone lol....you will see what I mean.
Its definitely an interesting book with some good and likeable characters. I'd for sure read more by this author.
The story revolves around the protagonist Austin Reyes, who is a scared, lonely, young man of twenty-two, living in the small town of Eaton. Though he is mature,he is unable to fight with anyone.Caleb who is must stronger then Austin try to use the situation and raped him. Austin couldn’t do anything to save myself from him. He was feared losing his job,he wasn’t happy. It happened not only twice, thrice but many times at night.A lifeless toy in a child’s hands, saying nothing, doing nothing, and feeling nothing.
Next comes Dylan in his life. Both of them have secrets. He tries to help Austin. The other part of the story revolves around them. Will their relationship sustain ?
There is a mixed feeling when you read this book. The characters are well developed. I will rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
I really liked Detour by new to me author Sid Love. This is the story of Austin...a guy who is working hard to help his mom. He is miserable and getting harassed by someone every night after he finishes work. He can't take it anymore...he needs to get away so he travels to Denver. That is where he meets Dylan. Dylan was a constant in Austin's life always there when Austin needed him. The more time they spend together the more that their feelings grow into something more. As they begin to explore a relationship...things and circumstances seem to want to keep them apart.
I really liked that this wasn't your typical romance story...it had mystery, suspense, and thriller. I would recommend this story and I can't wait to see what this author comes out with next.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
That was an intense read. Austin has been through hell and it has affected him pretty deep but he is strong enough to keep going. While his self confidence and respect may be in tatters, he keeps trying. Dylan comes across as kind of self absorbed until you really get to know him. He's had his struggles, too. What a great bunch of characters. Not only our main guys but Liana and Amy. Trevino was rough around the edges but Sharon rocked. The way the author started the story pulls you in and that connection with Austin stays strong throughout the whole book. So does the hatred for Caleb. This story does have triggers and while the author doesn't go into too graphic a detail, it can still be too much for those who are sensitive.
I received an ARC of this novel. This was a captivating and emotional story of a young man, Austin, who struggles with his own rape by his boss' son and his own mother's suicide. It took a long time to come to terms with all of this as he starts a new life in a big town. Finding his long time best friend, moving in with her and her roommate, he meets a well known porn star. But his relationship with Dylan has an unconventional beginning. When Austin finds that his rapist is Dylan's cousin he keeps it a secret until that secret blows up in his face. This is a traumatic story that will tug at your heart. Will the love that Austin and Dylan share withstand the hurt and deception? Sometimes it brings you closer together. Highly recommend this one! ❤️❤️
To be honest I have mixed feelings about this book. The storytelling is good, the writing style smooth and entertaining. Still, I struggled to get into the story. There was a lot going in a short amount of time. As a matter of fact throughout the story new elements and people were introduced, that I thought weren’t necessary for the overall story. For me, there was too much going on. I would have liked a bit fewer complications and a bit more fleshing out of certain situations and issues. This meant that I also couldn’t get quite a good grip on the MC’s. Only further into the book Dylan and Austin grew on me. The pace of the story ebbed and flowed and for me, the best parts were when the pace slowed down a bit and I got more feeling about their personalities and their connection.
I was given a copy of this book for an impartial review. My apologies to SL for taking so long to get down to the reading and reviewing.
I've read all of Sid's books and can see he grows as a writer with every new one, steadily moving away from his fan fiction roots.
Detour runs the reader through a whole gamut of emotions, as we follow Austin on his often heart-rending journey from soul-sucking unhappiness and loneliness to his happy-ever-after.
It's not always an easy read, dealing with such themes as rape and suicide as it does, but at its heart , it's really a story about hope and never giving up on the belief that things have to get better and that there's someone out there for all of us, no matter what we've been through.
I loved this book its fantastic. My heart ached for Austin and glad he found Dylan. No smooth sailing between them especially with their secrets involved. Includes danger, twists and turns, love and heartaches for a well written book. Well done Sid.. highly recommend this to readers. Austin was a bartender at 22 years and lonely and scared of being assulted and raped again at work by the bosses son Calab. Lossing his job and then finding his mum dead..was a disastrous night but its only the start.. Austin runs with nothing. Dylan meets Austin when his car was vandalised.. The sparks are there for them both.. A great book for the libraries.
Sid Love is a new author to me and so I didn't know what to expect. His writing is solid and the story line is interesting. This story is not all roses and rainbows. Austin is a sweet guy who has had horrible things happen to him. Dylan is a porn star. The MCs are so different in personalities you almost think it won't work out. What I liked about this book and I guess the author, is that he didn't find it necessary to get into the details of the sexual assault inflicted on one of the MCs I was given an advance reader copy of this book for my honest review.
A story about two people finding each other amid a storm of emotions. It's so full of emotion you can almost feel it but not angst. I think of angst as being a simple emotion and this book is anything but simple. There's so much fear, pain and loss that I thought that love would remain out of reach but when it finally came it was so much the stronger because it was a hard fought battle to get there.
*I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book*
This story had a lot going on......a lot. Almost too much because it was teetering in the 'oh come on, how much does one man need to endure' territory a few times. Teetering but it never went over. Instead the author pulled it back and wrapped things up nicely in a good HEA ending that felt very satisfying. Voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy.
