Detective Amy Sadler #1

Out of the Shadows

Rate this book
A woman who has been missing for three months is found dead with over 200 tally marks carved into her skin. For Detective Amy Sadler, who is still recovering mentally from a past undercover operation gone wrong, the case is as unsettling as it is frustrating. As more bodies appear with the same tally marks, Amy's only solace from the seemingly unsolvable case is the romance blooming between herself and forensic pathologist Dr. Lira Ward, a beautiful soul with a past even she doesn't understand. But that solace is shattered when the case collides with their personal lives in a way no one sees coming, and Amy is left wondering if she can salvage what they once had.

I grew up in Illinois, two blocks from my local library. I read pretty much whatever I could get my hands on, and when the story I wanted wasn't there, I made it up. I don't remember a time when I wasn't making up stories, but I believe I was 6 when I began writing them down. I still have the unicorn notebook that I wrote my first stories in! By the time I was 8, the stories became a regular escape. When school was boring or unpleasant, I retreated into my head and dealt with the situation by either narrating it or inventing a better one. Each doll I owned had an elaborate backstory in my mind.
In seventh grade, I won first place in a school contest for the best scary story, the prize being a gift certificate for the fall book fair. I was pretty thrilled about that, but I didn't really become disciplined about writing my stories down until towards the end of high school. In my first year of college, I began writing my first novel, though I never quite finished it. That didn't matter though; I was finally in the habit of writing on a daily basis, and this habit enabled me to start and finish multiple novels in the following years.
In 2004, I graduated from the University of Illinois with an education degree. I have spent the years since working in a day care, being a substitute teacher, and working as a special education TA. I never stopped finding the time to write though, and eventually I decided it was time to share those stories with the public!
Currently I am focused on writing, but may teach again in the future. I have an old house with lots of books, a spoiled cat named Lily Belle, and an obsessive interest in Doctor Who, Harry Potter, and Star Wars.

I love thriller and when there's romance in it as well, that is just like bowls of Tom Yam - absolutely perfect.

Unfortunately, my thriller slump continues with this. A promising storyline, a pathologist and a detective combo- Wow, a lesbian version of Bones. I don't have to worry about insta love as they've been friends for 3 years, they're likeable, quite efficient in their professions and secretly in love with one another, Perfect right?

After their love confession, thriller takes a break only to return sometimes to cause serious yet senseless problems to the hs. Nothing turn this book around and by the end of it, I'm happy for the hs for the ending given to them and happy with my decision on not continuing with the series.

Cari Hunter and A. Rose Mathieu are amazing in writing the perfect blend of thriller and romance. Not familiar with their work? Be prepared for a ride of a lifetime then.

2.5 rounded to 3 stars. This is a first novel and it kind of shows. It honestly felt like I was reading mediocre Rizzoli and Isles fanfiction. (I'm not knocking fanfic. I like it. Truth is, I write it too, but I don't publish it as mainstream.) I liked the characters and the story was interesting, but it felt rushed and there was way more telling than showing. Overall, just an okay read, but there was enough potential I might try one of Michelle Arnold's future books just to see the progression in writing style. There's definite potential here.

If you enjoy detective stories, lesbian romance and a serial read then this is a book for you! The author leads you through a tale of terror right from the off and keeps you on the edge of your seat as one by one the characters are drawn into a world that nobody ever wants to endure. I am already looking forward to the sequel!

An interesting Kindle Unlimited read. I believe someone said this was originally a Rizzoli and Isles fanfic, and I can see that, but there's been a lot of changed in the characters and their backgrounds, which I think works in its favor.

Amy Sadler is a biracial detective on the homicide squad, and had done time in sex crimes with her own past hurt after a botched undercover job. Her best friend Pathologist Doctor Lira Ward is all science and facts. But they get each other so well and are very in tune, while both being in love with the other and not knowing it. They are investigating body dumps of women who had been kidnapped and kept hostage for months while being drugged up and assaulted, they also have tally marks etched onto their bodies.

This is mainly a romance, while there is a strong thriller element, there aren't as many twists and turns or even much suspense built from the perpetrator of these heinous crimes. I found the mystery all a bit too easy to solve, which I would have preferred to have been more involved and felt more 'on edge' about, but instead you just get this overwhelming feeling that it's all going to be OK. Even when the worst happens. Which is totally fine and unique for a procedural, despite truly vicious things happening. It just may not be to everyone's taste.

But I truly loved the characters of Amy and Lira, and seeing them confess their deeper feelings for eachother was magical. So I am looking forward to following the relationship of these two lovers over the series.

After a few very sweet romances, I was in the mood for something grittier. This is my first book by this author, and I’m looking forward to the next one, especially as this is the start of a series. It's also my first listening to a mystery / thriller on audiobook so I was a little wary, wondering how I'd react to the scary parts. I did ok and liked the narration, I felt the narrator did a great job at voicing the characters.

We meet Amy and Lira when, after three years of friendship and believing the other to be straight, they both realize they have feelings for each other. The romance is really nice and I enjoyed the sweetness, mutual support and banter between the two women.

As this is also a mystery, involving a sadistic rapist / murderer, some parts are pretty tough to go through. Amy is a police detective, Lira a forensic pathologist and they work together on the case, until the case becomes much more personal. I don’t usually enjoy gruesome details of crimes but they serve a purpose in this story.

I received a free paperback copy of this book in exchange for an honest view.

I enjoyed this first book in what is a most promising series. With a Rizzoli and Isles feel to the content this was a fantastically developed mystery with an amazing plot, that as a reader has you guessing away at the direction only to find what you thought isn’t quite what happens.

Amy and Lira’s characters are unique and bounce off of one another fantastically as their relationship develops and they overcome some awful obstacles thrown in their path. Amy’s brash nature works well to make her a vulnerable and loveable character, where Lira’s bubbly personality has your heart breaking when you learn of all she has to deal with after the ordeal she has to be saved from.

I can’t wait to read the other books in the series, and recommend this gritty crime mystery to anyone looking for a fast pace, exciting, in depth read to get the cogs ticking in their head! Just great!

Bring on book 2!

3.5 stars.

The first few chapters had me hooked and I was sure I was reading a 5 star book, then everything just kind of hit fast forward. It felt like I read a duology tightly condensed into one, very fast paced book with big time jumps every few chapters that had me flicking back a few pages to make sure I hadn't missed anything.

The characters are great, believable and layered. The subject matter is most certainly disturbing and this book comes with a heavy trigger warning.

The writing is good and I have no complaints with the story except the pacing. A LOT happens in this book. For me, there is a loss of impact when things run together like this.

Despite all that, I would definitely read a sequel and encourage readers who enjoy crime thrillers to try this book.

A seriously good book.

Authors do not usually allow their main characters to be normal. This one does. I found this gem of a book by accident. One of a very select few that the average reader can relate to. The opening few pages are truly horrifying. And then we get to the normal part. Two characters get caught up in a horrific ordeal. The kidnapping and torture of one torments the other. Over the course of two days they each experience a different kind of hell. One vows revenge and gets it. She doesn't hold off at the last minute. She gets her revenge. And for months afterwards, as she endures yet another different kind of hell, she wants to do it all over again so she can torture the animal. She feels no shame over this, no guilt, just an overwhelming need for him to suffer again for the hell he inflicted on someone she loves deeply. However she does not neglect what she has to do to support and encourage the one she loves. A strong book, emotional, at times horrific, but always believable. A normal reaction to what any normal person would feel in the same situation. A very strong ending but not for one minute does the author allow readers to forget everything they went through to get there. Highly recommended.

Out of the Shadows

I haven't read this author before but came across her when searching KU for crime stories. I'm so glad I gave it a chance, it was really well written and I couldn't put it down! I loved the characters and can't wait to read the next book. And really, you can't go wrong with someone who is also a Criminal Minds fan!

Loved it.

I really enjoyed Out of the Shadows. It’s great seeing the relationship between Amy and Lira develop. But if violence against women upsets you, then you might need to skip this one.

Found by accident but so glad i did.

From page one the story takes off and has you hooked.
Its a fast pace story, easy to follow. Very likeable characters and some you will hate. This book made me an emotional mess. I felt Amy's stress and Lira's pain , I cried with them and i felt the fear down to my bones when the plot took a twist I didn't see coming until it was to late. I couldn't put it down. I finished this book in lest than a day. Its that well written.
This series is a must own. Hope you get a copy today.

I recommend this book.

A new series for me and I like it. Amy is a homicide detective and her best friend, Lira, is a forensic pathologist. They work together and over time begin to have feelings for one another - a new experience for both of them. Women are being kidnapped, held for months, drugged, repeatedly raped, then murdered. Amy and her police partner are investigating the case, until disaster strikes, leaving Amy to rethink her life. Well written and engaging - I can recommend this book.

Loved this book, fell in love with the complexities of the characters and found myself cheering for them and then holding my breath hoping that ..........well if I tell you that then there will be no point in you reading the book, and I DO suggest you read it!!!

I'm sincerely hoping this book will be followed by a second in the series very soon!

Separately I loved Dr Lira's character; her quirks, as well as her vulnerability. Detective Amy I liked for her strength of character that hidden emotions and the under current of anger that threatened to emerge, together they make for an enigmatic couple and fantastic crime fighting duo.

If you like murder mystery, crime and romance novella's then this is a great read.

2*

I was expecting more in the way of an in depth investigation, with twists and turns like any good crime thriller. However, I found this was lacking in anything other than a lot of dialogue. It was mostly a romantic book, which read more like a script or screenplay.

Not what I expected

First, I have to start off by stating that I got this book free of charge in exchange for a review, but as I always state, this does not in any way impact my review. My reviews are always honest and my own.

A strong book, emotional, at times horrific, but always believable. A normal reaction to what any normal person would feel in the same situation. A very strong ending but not for one minute does the author allow readers to forget everything they went through to get there. Highly recommended.

Amy and Lira are 3-year best friends & recognize the love they have for each other. So begins a love affair in the midst of a serial killing spree. The editing & formatting was difficult to muster through but I had to read the book.
Crisp dialogue and thoughtful writing about falling in love with a woman when you're a woman and never thought you'd love a woman! The best part? Reading about Amy's foray into a bookstore to learn about lesbian sex and leaving with a copy of every book on the subject! LOL (been there)
I like Miss Arnold's style and will read her other books.
So, to other readers, read this book & you won't be disappointed.

I liked the characters and storyline, but I had a difficult time following who was speaking from time to time, and that occurred throughout the book. There was often no separation between characters sentences. I’m not sure what may have happened, but the formatting was such that I could not often tell where a new paragraph was supposed to be. Hopefully the next book in the series will have solved those problems, I’m going to give it a go.

Fiction rarely holds my attention for long, but I had a hard time putting this book down! I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series. I actually bought the other two books when I was about halfway through Out of the Shadows because I knew I was going to want to read them too!

Romance, not really crime fiction

A fun, quick summer-read romance, light on anything else and in serious need of proofreading. The writing was fine, not amazing. But I enjoyed it all the way through, and I needed a break when I read it - so it was fine.

The book had an interesting concept... this was more a suspense/drama/crime novel that had a bit of romance blended in. It was a good mix but I felt like the crime story aspects of the novel were more fleshed out. I will admit I had a hard time getting through the book because of the details of the crimes in it. without spoilers, there are brutal rape scenes described in the book... more about the aftermath and such... just not what I want to read about. I feel like the love story between Lira and Amy could have used more development. It's like we got a little backstory on their friendship and then bam, they were in a relationship. Because Lira is very much described as a Bones (tv show) character- she is very literal and the sex scenes were all very clinical. I stuck it out because I wanted to see the end but I don't think I can read the other in the series. I think the story could just use a little more fleshing out and polishing, but if not for the subject matter I would continue the series otherwise.
And the narration was pretty good, but she did one thing that bugged me. She started out pronouncing the main characters name correctly as Leer-ah, but then a bit down the line she kept changing it between that and Lee-rah, with a hard emphasis on Lee. Since I share the same name, Lira... pronounced Leer-ah, it really really bugged me.

First of all: "This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review."

This is not the best written thriller I've ever read. Nor is it entirely plausible. But I found it to be quite charming, and really enjoyed it.

The two female protagonists are both very likable and easy to relate to. I enjoyed the fact that they both were genuinely nice people. Too many thrillers and authors of thrillers seem to think that at least one main character needs to be a complete jerk. So I'm glad to see that pattern broken.

The story is quite engaging and moves forward in a natural way without ever losing your attention. The eventual climax and resolution are plausible and satisfying without being cheesy or formulaic.

The narrator does a great job of conveying the emotion of the events without ever losing the nice quality of voice that she has. Her voice really is quite lovely and adds more emotional depth to the relationships that develop.

Highly recommend this book about love in the midst of criminal pursuit!
Super enjoyable read—got the physical book for reading at the beach. Lesbian love story wrapped inside the case of a serial killer, who both our leads are pursuing by way of their different areas of expertise . Likable lead characters, especially the quirky forensic pathologist. Illustrates the journey of those who survive the trauma of sexual assault, as well.

3.5⭐️ I wanted to like this series so badly. I couldn’t get Rizzoli and Isles out of my head. I seriously “shipped” them and this was an attractive premise to me. No spoilers but as the daughter and also mother in law of cops the police procedural aspects were disappointing.
