Empty Skull Comix #1: The Gerald Jablonski Collection

Rate this book
"What in the name of our great king Satan is that vulgar noise?" It's Empty Skull Comics, a 48-page collection of absurdist humor featuring Farmer Ned, the Empty Skull Gang, and the Pop Drunk Kids. Mind-numbing comedy at its finest, Empty Skull Comics is an even mix of new material and classic reprints from Arcade, Heavy Metal and Tantalizing Stories. With an introduction by Jim Woodring, and stories such as "Dale the Skittish Mule," Gerald Jablonski's premiere offering from Fantagraphics is truly a treat.

The panels get denser, wordier, and more repetitious with each passing strip. It's like the comic is slowly collapsing under its own weight. By the end it feels like decoding a verbose fever dream. A bold artistic choice, sure, but also kind of tests the reader's patience. I enjoyed the Farmer Ned strips, though.
