I'm not sure why, but I really couldn't paint Shadow as a bad guy, or Violet as a victim of Stockholm Syndrome.
Now the book lacks a lot of quality. There is plot holes and the psychoanalyses are not spot on.
However, Shadow, the male MC, being an almost psychopath was surprisingly tender.
Yes, there are some form of violence. However, this is a vampire. And I think I'd prefer the hero tossing the heroine, literally rather than him snapping her head off to drink her blood.
What I find redeemable in him doesn't apply to human heroes.
Let's look at some points, and you draw your own conclusion. I'd suggest you read the book. For an upstarting author, she's pretty good.

****SPOILER*****
(I think I gave away the WHOLE plot. DAMMIT!)
1. Hero saves heroine from a rapist, she's badly injured, he just saw her being thrown out of the house. She has very little to no money.
2. He does brings her to his home, heals her, however, when she is conscious, he keeps on claiming he abducted her, he'd keep her and threatens to kill her if she doesn't listen to him.
Note to this point: it's already quite clear to female MC that shadow is not normal. So I can see this as his defense of keeping her in there long enough for her to heal and the trust him. I personally think he was already attached to her, however, mind it, he's a psychopath and doesn't understand the love because he never felt it. True his friends have girlfriends, and they love him, but HE thinks they're his friend because they're scared of him.
3. He does attack her couple of times, and then he does feel remorse, the idiot is also the one to heal her.
4. He was visibly disturbed when he learned about her abusive father and he tried changing his behaviour from abusive to somewhat normal (without much success, he only knows how to be an asshole).
5. As fer as the heroine goes, she didn't have much choices, she could have gone with Rose, she could've stayed with the older couple, but what was the point? Shadow had connections, and she didn't love him, he didn't KNOW him well enough, so how is she to know Shadow and his vampire friends wouldn't kill anyone helping her? I don't like a martyr heroine, but sometimes you do need to think of others.
6. Violet gets in the relationship AFTER knowing Shadow, AFTER he showed some humanity. I really couldn't see it as stockholm syndrome.
7. I didn't like Violet, she's too forgiving and too nice. She finds excuse for Rose and Leah. Rose, who abandoned her with a pack of vampire because she feels Violet was the reason her life was in danger. How she worked that out is beyond me. She didn't even think what will happen to Violet if she loses her only friend. She didn't try to see Violet's side of things for a single minute.
8. Leah, being a Shadow's FRIEND was extremely disloyal and a bitch. She has left Violet in harm's way more than once when Shadow SPECIFICALLY asked her not to let her out her sight. THIS behaviors are while she was scared to death by Shadow, just imagine what she'd have done if she wasn't scared.
She decides to show loyalty to her sister, who DOESN'T care a fig for her and who killed people and is ready to kill Violet simply for amusement. She would kill Leah's boyfriend without second glance, and probably Leah too if necessary. I didn't personally believe she killed Raven, until the next book. But she showed every sign of being untrustworthy and should have been cut off in this book.
9. I REALLY don't like heroines who are like angels with endless patience and forgiveness, which I guess ties to the next book.
10. I didn't get Raven's motivation completely. However, here are the facts: Shadow turned her simply because he can, he did have a sexual relationship with her and then coldbloodedly disposed of her.
He didn't turn Violet, he rescued her, he cared for her and he's apparently ready to die for her. He asked his friends for help to save her. He'd even let Raven live if that means protecting Violet. So these were clearly quite a motivation, but the revenge side still didn't ring true to me. Danielle needs more writing experience to come up with better motives in future, she probably will with practice.
11. Let's not forget, Shadow IS a psychopath, and a vampire who hadn't been taught compassion. So he was an asshole majority of the book, but I could see he was trying and struggling to embrace his human side for Violet's sake, so I really couldn't hate him. In fact I actually loved him in the end, whereas I couldn't really warm up to Violet.
P.S. Leah's an insufferable bitch. Just saying.

Violet’s life was perfect at one point, but it all went to hell when her mother left. Her father turned to abuse, and Violet slowly began to pine away wishing for nothing but freedom. When she’s granted her wish, however, it’s not anything like she imagines it will be. She’s kidnapped by a vampire.

So I’m torn about what to say for this book. I fell into a love/hate relationship with it.

The plot was definitely intriguing, and it kept me listening. I had to know how the story ended, but as for the rest, I was disappointed. There are moments that are overexplained, and the characters are rather two-dimensional. Quite a few times they make some very questionable decisions. Violet has been kidnapped, but she doesn’t want to tell the police out of fear of what will happen to her so she reaches out to her best friend instead? It didn’t make a lot of sense to me at some places, but the author made up for it with pages full of suspense.

The narrator did an okay job with the readings and the main female vocals, but after a little while, it got a bit confusing because all the characters sounded the same.

All in all, I think this is an enjoyable read. Dark, twisted, and suspenseful.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

This book could have lived up to its potential. Ogier's lack of the desire to use contractions didn't flow well with me and made her writing come off as stiff. She shifts into Shadow's point of view from time to time but most of the book is seen from Violet's first person perspective, which is somewhat jarring and arguably unnecessary.

Raven's antics makes no sense at all though she is the story's primary antagonist. It makes even less sense how Shadow and his vampires consistently fail to keep human Violet out of trouble, who Shadow has kidnapped and is holding prisoner in his house. What makes even less sense than that is Violet justifying the kidnapping and excusing it.

Violet walks away from a (female) friend to be in the arms of a highly volatile/temperamental vampire boy who repeatedly threatens to kill her and displays little to no self-control in his mood swings all the while claiming to be doing everything he's doing to protect Violet. In the end, Violet claims her life has improved and everyone from her past is a ghost to her. But all she really did was leave one abusive situation for another. To live in a house full of vampires she is no match for physically or otherwise with no real freedom or self-reliance. I can't pat Danielle Ogier on the back for a job well done for this one. But I will give myself credit for finishing it.

Not sure

I m not sure of this novel. I read it but didn’t get absorbed into it. I enjoyed it but it’s not one I would read again. It won’t be one that I will remember.

Okay, I have a lot to say about this book. I wanted to like it. I really did. But it’s just so badly written and the author’s unwillingness to use contractions for whatever reason made it seem stiff and awkward. I also didn’t like how there were a couple times where the perspective shifted from Violet to Shadow. It was entirely unnecessary and if the author wanted it like that, she should have written it in third person and have every other chapter switch between perspectives from the beginning. What annoyed me the most, though, was how the “plot” moved the characters around when it should be the characters driving the plot. Everything was too convenient and there were no explanations why.

The characters were all very flat other than Shadow, honestly. I wanted to like Violet since I can sort of relate to her history of being abused, but she was just... annoying and whiny more than anything. It also irritated me at how her dad became abusive out of nowhere. People don’t just do a 180 like that. There are always warning signs in abusers, even if they’re subtle. And no one is 100% terrible like that. Abusers will occasionally be nice to confuse their victims and keep them around. It’s part of their manipulation tactics. One good point though was how Violet’s panic attacks were described. I thought they were a pretty accurate representation, at least in my case.

I liked Shadow a lot, other than his name. Everyone else had normal sounding names, so it made him sound... kind of cringey, honestly. But anyways, he reminded me very much of another vampire character from a video game series I absolutely love. I think that’s the reason I liked him so much - because he reminded me of Subaru. His behavior and actions were believable to me because of that. I wanted to like Leah, but I couldn’t get a grasp of what her personality was supposed to be since it seemingly changed every time she was mentioned.

Raven and Adam were horrible antagonists and could have been developed so much better. Their motivations were never clearly explained other than the bullshit “jealous ex-girlfriend” trope. I was honestly hoping the main antagonist would have something to do with Violet’s mother, but she was never mentioned again and that plotline was dropped pretty much as soon as it was brought up. Rose was annoying and bratty. Violet just kind of accepts how willing she was to cut contact, but it takes years of coming to terms with that kind of thing - especially coming from someone who was supposed to be her best friend of many years.

This book reads like a mediocre fanfiction - something I’d read at 2 in the morning because I’m bored and desperate for content I haven’t already read or seen. I really, really wish this had been written better because I love the idea and what the characters could have been. I definitely don’t hate it, but it’s not something I’ll ever come back to and reread.

There are exactly three things I want to say about this book.

1. I liked the fact that the author didn't tip toe around the fact that vampires kill people. Even if there are people they wouldn't kill there are LOTS of people they would kill. Shadow might not have loved the way he was turned but at the end of the day he has no problem prowling the streets and murdering a drunk guy. I felt that was honest and true to the character.

2. If I'm being brutally honest it bothered me the way Shadow treated Violet. He's a vampire... He's all dark and twisty I get that, but if someone called me a pathetic bitch and bit me I would not be contemplating a relationship with them. I suppose it made a little bit of sense what with her being the victim of abuse but in the book, Shadow was upset about the abuse so why was he also perpetuating it by emotionally, verbally and physically abusing her?

3. This last one is a little silly on my part but I felt like the author had something against contractions... That's more of a personal preference thing I guess.

Broken Wings has a fascinating and unique premise, and it really captured my attention. The story is well-plotted, and the character development is excellent; I found both Shadow and Violet quite intriguing and flawed in some ways. Immediately I felt sympathetic towards Violet; she had a difficult life, having to live with a nasty and physically abusive father. Eventually, severely injured from his beating, she escapes his brutality, only to be kidnapped by a 100-year-old vampire, Shadow.

Their story was fascinating, the way they connected despite Violet's hesitancy to trust again and he; holding her a prisoner in his house. The storyline was engaging with elements of drama, danger and suspense, and some plot twists. The narration was great! Anaia Rivers did an excellent job portraying the characters and their emotions. Overall, Broken Wing was an enjoyable listen, one I'll recommend to PNR/Vampire fans.

Broken Wings Review

Broken Wings is a likeable book. It's not exceptional good but not bad. It's definitely not an Rachel Mead or P.C. Cast book. I gave the book a 3 rating because it had good bones of a story line and really likeable characters. But...yes but, there were several spelling errors as well as grammar errors (sorry that's one of my pet peeves). Rule of thumb while editing....read a line, paragraph, or page backwards, you will catch spelling and grammar errors every time.
Also the book had a tendency to repeat it self. You would read a page and then the next page had the same action only written in a different way. I have to admit that had me very frustrated (thru the whole book).
But I would recommend to read only for the fact of the story line. Just a simple Vampire book!

*Audiobook*

This was a first time for me listening to this author and narrator. They both did a good job.

The story ended on a very positive note, and I hope that there will be a follow up, the book was a bit drawn out unnecessary with the all the inner debating if Shadow is a monster or not, other than that I really enjoyed it.

The narrator gave each character their own voice, there is a few words where I could hear an accent but I am not sure if that was because of the book because of where it is taking place or if it is just how she pronounces certain words. She did a great job in reading the story with so much emotion.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I read the first third of this book, but I just couldn't continue. The story was fine so far, but the writing was incredibly stilted, it was all tell, no show. The character said things like "I had been betrayed so much by the people I loved most, and because of that, I closed myself off. I found it harder to trust people, to open up to them.". This wasn't a self revelation late in the book, it was in the first chapter. The reader can't discover the character, figure her out from her interactions or see evidence of things, because everything is bluntly, flatly stated immediately. I think this is a first novel, so I'd try the author again in the future - there's nothing offensive or annoying about it, it's just impossible to engage with this type of writing for me.

Perfect Read for the Immature

The story was poorly written. It was a long, exhausting read. I completely understand the author's message but her delivery needs a lot of work. The characters are not likable because they were all annoying. The author repeats phases and scenes over and over again. This entire book could be rewritten and with better character development within ten chapters once all of the fluff is deleted. Even the ending is a disappointment. I do not recommend this book.

My review is based on the audiobook. The narrator saved this story for me with on point pacing and easy to understand character voices. Broken Wings has a good overall story and concept however the execution is lacking. A decent editor would be able to turn this into a better read. For now it is just Okay in my opinion. There is little character depth and alot of the decisions made don't make sense. If I were reading this I would have skimmed or skipped alot since it was a tad drawn out in places.

This books kinda fell short of expectations for me. It had good reviews but honestly I don't know how. I was looking for a paranormal/vampire romance, cause that's what I was in the mood for and this just didn't do it for me. It felt rushed, the plot was odd. And the characters didn't have that spark or chemistry. I honestly hate giving books bad reviews, I really do cause I want to see the best in them cause I know and author worked hard on it, but this book was just not for me I'm afraid 😨 so sorry if you've read it an liked it, just not my style.😔

Mmmm not for me. I did finish it. I really really didn’t like the fmc, I cannot stand a weak female.

I also didn’t buy into the romance aspect of the book at all either. I thought the writing wasn’t really that in depth into the background or world building aspect either.

I don’t really understand what makes the mmc the way he is. I don’t understand why the secondary characters are friends and Why they are the only friends of mmc and fmc.

Anyway. Narration was ok. Fit the novel well.

2 stars.

Gave the sample up on wattpad a try... didnt even finish Chapter 1, it's so badly written. It's mediocre for fanfiction, but completely unacceptable for published fiction. So much just telling the reading the character's emotions and the mc's reactions to what's going on around her is shallow. Also, the author capslocked an entire sentence to show a character was yelling. Yeah no thanks.

The story concept good but author failed to deliver. Are these characters young adults? Shadow is childish with poor impulse control and doesn't play well with others. Violet is just a plain wall flower who runs away two times too many while Shadow is always ranting about killing her. Book needs some serious thought and revisions.

Is romance in the room with us?

This was the least romantic read I’ve read under the genre. Zero chemistry between MC’s.

All this trouble and drama, for what?

Absolutely none of it what necessary given that there was zero heat and chemistry.
Painfully boring and truly a waste of potential.
