A creature of the night, Sarafina lives only for pleasure, but love is an emotion she has deemed forbidden. Experience has taught her that love leads only to betrayal and pain, and she wants no more of pain. She cares for no one, tolerating only the presence of those she can control utterly. With her powers, she is convinced she can break anyone. Willem Stone cannot be broken. He is a challenge Sarafina cannot resist--a man as boldly alive as she is, a man with a will of iron, yet a mere mortal. And the only thing stronger than the clash of their wills is the power of their desire. But when vampire hunters take Amber Lily, the only child ever born to a vampire, Sarafina and Willem must put their struggle aside and combine their strengths in a rescue attempt that could cost them their very lives. And in the process, they find the most powerful force of all: love.
I live in the teeny, tiny town of Taylor, NY, (Alliteration Alert!) though my mailing address is Cincinnatus, my telephone exchange is Truxton and I pay taxes and vote in Cuyler. All of these are at least in the same rural county in the southern hills of New York State; Cortland County. There are more cattle than people here. The nearest “big” cities are Syracuse and Binghamton and they are an hour away, in different directions, and not really all that big by most standards, though they both seem humongous to me. I look out my window to see rolling, green, thickly forested hills, wildflower laden meadows and wide open blue, blue skies. My road is barely paved. The nearest neighboring place is a 700 acre dairy farm.
My house is a big, century old farmhouse. I moved in here after my divorce in 2006. Just a little over a year later, the house, which I had named, SERENITY, burned. It was 99% gutted, and I lost my two dogs, Sally, an 11-year-old great Dane, and Wrinkles, my 14-year-old, blind bulldog. This was the culmination of my Dark Night of the soul, which had seemed to hit me all at once in 2006-2007. My mother died that year, after a 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was only 60. The youngest of my five daughters had left home that same year, and while that’s not a tragedy at all, it felt like one to me. Then came the divorce. And finally there was the fire--it seemed my darkest night wasn’t quite finished with me after all. I had lost almost everything before that point, and as I poked through the wet ashes and soot the next day, I realized that I had now been stripped all the way to the bone.
No better time to start over. (And no, I didn’t come to that realization that day--there were a few days of wallowing in pity first, particularly the day after the fire, when I hit a deer and smashed up my car, which I was practically living in!)
That’s when I started to laugh. Just sat on the side of the road as the deer bounded, uninjured and carefree, out of sight, and laughed. It was just too ridiculous at that point, to do anything else!
And from there, I picked myself up, and brushed myself off, and said, okay, there’s only one way to go from here. Forward. And that’s what I did. There I was at the age of harrurmphemmph, living in my one, mostly undamaged remaining room, with a dorm-sized mini-fridge, a futon, a TV, my cat (nine lives!) and a laptop. And not much else. (Though thank goodness the room that survived the fire, was a room that had its own attached bathroom!)
Since then I have rebuilt my beloved home, which really has become my haven, my “Serenity.” I share it now with my fiancé, Lance, and we have accumulated quite the little family together. “Little” being a relative term. We have a pair of English Mastiffs, Dozer and Daisy, who weigh 203 pounds and 208 pounds respectively, and a little pudgy English Bulldog named Niblet, who is bigger than both of them, inside her mind. We also have the aforementioned cat, Glorificus (“Glory” for short,) who adores her canine pups and keeps them firmly in line. And we've acquired a pair of stray cats as well, a mother and son, Luna (Lulu for short) and Butters aka Buddy. Lulu showed up pregnant during a lunar eclipse, had a litter, and vanished again. We found homes for all the kittens except one. Butters. We got him fixed and kept him. A few months later, Lulu returned, again expecting. This litter was born on the "Monster Moon." Again, all the kittens were spayed and neutered and placed in homes, and this time we got Lulu to the vet in time to spay her before the cycle could repeat.
Glory is not amused.
She has a story of her own, my old Glory cat, having been with me before the Dark Times descended, she went through it all with me, moved with me, survived the fire, and remains with me still. She's tolerating the newcomers. Barely.
My partner is an artist, a mechanic, a welder and an inventor, and the rumors are true, he is much younger than I
A creature of the night, Sarafina revels in the glory of vengeance and rage. And she tries not to remember a time when she knew the meaning of love . . . before she was betrayed by the curse of her blood.
She plays for kicks, but never for keeps. Even when she spots William Stone at a local nightclub, she wants only to possess him long enough to satiate her deep, passionate hunger. His power and his strength excite her. But Will is much more than anything she could ever imagine.
He is a man of almost inhuman courage and defiance. He is as boldly alive as she is -- yet he is mortal. And he is irresistble.
Her dark desires lead them both into a world where dangerous interlopers are playing deadly games with Immortals. And as she is pulled into a bizarre vortex of vampire hunters madness and duty to protect the tender heart of the young girl who holds the powerful legacy of The Chosen, both Sarafina and Will find themselves forced to confront a hunger more powerful than any other: love
I haven’t read the other books of this series, but “Embrace The Twilight” by Maggie Shayne is very good. It’s about Sarafina, a vampire woman who had a lot of emotional pain in her long life and Willem a human soldier who can communicate with her in a very strange way. I liked this book because it was easy to read but in the end I had some questions, because the author didn't give us some important information. But, it’s a good book! :)
Willem Stone - special forces... the first third of the book is his torture when captured in the desert... and his escape from the pain came in day dreams, where his spirit joined with Sarafina...
Sarafina... a couple of hundred years earlier, a gypsy, a seer, a witch of sorts... and she has blood that will lead to an early death or eternal life if sharing blood with a vampire... betrayed by her sister & fiance, she embraces life with the thousands year old vampire... And Willem, her spirit, is with her at the turning points of her life - submerging and loving her once in a very mystical way before she was turned... she cursed her sister/fiance, and lived with and was educated by the vampire - who finally gave into despair, and sought the sun - again Willem was there (he was recouperating from his torture in New York, and told Sarafina)... and Sarafina's great, great nephew was of the vampire blood, and she turned him, and they were together for another hundred years, until he fell in love and left her also... Sarafina wants to protect her heart...she has a few minions, adicted to small tastes of her blood, and devotes herself to writing her memoirs.
and Willem meets another vampire - one dedicated to not taking human blood (except from blood banks - and perhaps from a previous book?) and one with a daughter, Amber, who is part human and part vampire... when his 18 year old daughter wants to experience some freedom, Willem is hired to watch over her, without her knowledge, to protect her... her mother had been kept in a lab, Amber had been birthed there, and the 'bad people' wanted Amber back... Amber is not fully human nor fully vampire.. she does not need blood and she can be in the sun, and she is stronger, faster, and has heightened senses... as trade off to protect Amber, Willem wants to know about Sarafina... and he is brought to the bar where she hangs out writing in her journals... She will not risk her heart, and sends him away... he is watching over the girls, has planted a 'finding' device... but Amber - eventually figures out he is following them... at a club they are at, and in fear, she 'felt' Sarafina's presence, and calls for her help in neutralizing Willem...
A confused Sarafina wants to protect the girl, and is hurt when she believes Willem of trying to hurt the girls... she tries to make a minion of him - they have great sex, she has trouble controlling how much blood she takes from him,she chains him during the day... but though he feels her draw, as much from her blood as his genuine feelings for her, he is not 'under her spell'... she wants to believe him, but is afraid of her feelings... the 2nd day/3rd night he pretends to be enthralled, she unchains him, and he escapes during the day...
Amber had told her aunt that they were 'under attack' and her parents & aunt and uncle get to her, but too late... The antivampire league has kidnapped her... they tranquilize her, and subject first subject her to potential deathly situations (sunlight, drowning), etc... the rescue attempt of her family fails, and her parents & uncle are captured... her aunt tracks down Sarafina (to find Willem)... they fight, her minions call the escaped Willem, he comes to the resuce... and the three band together, and under Willem's military experience, enact a rescue... The main bad guy does get away... and Sarafina comes to realize that love is the most important... no matter how short/long it lasts...

Once in a while, I enjoy reading vampire romance books. They are a good means of "brainrelaxing", because when you are tired of always trying to guess where a difficult book is going and you just don't want to analyze the characters and situations anymore, there is nothing better than reading a predictable book such as a romance. You know there will be two people falling in love, they will face obstacles, but in the end they will wind up together. Of course, it should be nicely written and be witty or funny or unexpected in some places. So how does Maggie Shayne compares to my list of expectations (I'm going to summarize all the books I've read so far - which means all the books in the series before and including the one in the title)? Since this isn't the only romance series I read, I must admit it isn't the best one I have ever read, however, it isn't the worst one either. She created quite an interesting world - vampires are stronger, but have some serious vulnerabilities as well. The villains are psycho scientists, which is nice. Some of the characters are bossy in a way they appear ridiculous, some of them are overprotective, some of them can't keep up with the times and are afraid of technology which makes them funny... you really get quite a wide range of characters. However, these books don't combine action and romance well. There are numerous sex scenes (which I have absolutely no objections to ;-)= ) but the action is usually crammed into the last chapters of the book which makes it look weird (you go from slow... slow... steamy sex... slow... omg he is a vampire... slow... slow.... to oh here's the bad guys... something fast is happening... goodbye reader we're good). It somehow doesn't work. The tension is not built enough when the climax comes.
This is book 8 in a paranormal romance (vampire) series that began in the 90s (well before the twilight and black dagger brotherhood explosion).
These books are a very similar style to black dagger brotherhood in that each book is about a specific vampire, there are people trying to kill them, all the characters from previous books are inter-related and each book in itself has a nice little happish ending. Very very similar. But these books came first.
However, I think these books lack the intensity that the brotherhood has. Most (like this one) are so-so and are really a little bit silly and nonsensical. One or two of the books though has hit the mark that keep me reading the series waiting for that little glimpse of gold amid the mediocrity.
I really loved the lead male character of Will and I think Ms Shayne is great at writing male characters. The female characters all seem a little 2D. This is a common theme I am finding with this genre. It is like the writers pour their heart and soul into the dashing male character and there is no energy left for the female co-lead.
This was an easy read, but didn't leave me thinking I would ever read this specific book again. Oh well. Plenty more books in the library (and plenty more books in this series...I think they have just released book 18).
Book 11 in the "Wings in the Night" series (if reading in chronological order). Great book in the series, but you have to wonder at what is going to happen to the hero and heroine down the road... since the hero is not one of the Chosen, and cannot be turned into a vampire...? This is the story of Sarafina (vampire) and Willem Stone (human). Sarafina is the sire of Dante (from Twilight Hunger). This book features many familiar faces from the past and the bad DPI is at it again...
I really enjoyed the book. This is Sarafina's and Will's story. Sarafina is a vampire and Will is a human (but not one of the chosen). I'll wait to see if M. Shayne addresses this in the next book. We also got to see Amber Lily grown up.
I have been reading this series out of order, so was quite interested in finding out how Willem and Serafina came to be together. I quite enjoyed their story, although I did not rnk this as the best in this series.
An easy read, with vivid scenes that could keep you awake at night. The suspense is nail-biting. I was moved by Sarafina and Willem's story. A very entertaining book that I enjoyed very much.
Maggie Shayne always writes a good yarn. In this book, she creates the perfect match for Vampire Gypsy Princess Sarafina in Colonial Willem Stone. Bravo!
After seeing the train wreck of a movie based on this novel, I had to read it. The film did not by any means do this book justice, despite most of the scenes being lifted directly from the novel.
Once I started reading it, I just couldn't put it down. The story absorbed me. It was exciting. The characters were interesting and lovable. And the romance was quite good.
It wasn't a perfect novel. Willem and Serafina didn't interact enough, and the subplot involving the kidnapping of Amber Lily really detracted from their romance, although it was a good story of its own. There was never any explanation for their mysterious connection, nor was their happy ending truly satisfying in that Willem lacks the Belladonna antigen (read the story to understand what that means, I don't want to give it away). I really wish the author had given that issue more story time and come up with a creative way to overcome that hurdle instead of just leaving it hanging. I really like Serafina and feel she deserves a happier ending than what she got after what she'd been through.
My other issues with this story are the issue of the vampire rules, as with her other novels. I just don't care for the idea of hemophiliac vampires, I feel that this weakness makes them too fragile and coupled with their softness toward humans and refusing to be the predators they are takes away a certain edge that makes me enjoy vampires to begin with. Humans with fangs are not fun. I want Vampires- dangerous bloodsucking predators.
But despite these problems, it was still a good read, and I would recommend it to fans of the genre.
If you're a fan of vampire books then you should read this book. The Author has filled this book series with a different definition of Vampire's lives! You are going to be very drawn to the characters in this plot filled book. I'm incredibly interested in the other books she has written and I think you will be to!
I got introduced to the romance world reading the graphic novel of this book and went into the actual book itself eventually. I was originally just into young adult and popular fictional reads, but this was an opening to a door that has now led me to the romance reader I am.
Of all the vampire books I've read, this series has been the best. They have just enough of the most exciting things to keep me reading one after the other.
Sesto volume della serie Wings in the night. Tutti entrano a far parte dell’intreccio.
I've been slowly reading through the Wings in the Night series for a few years now. They were one of the first paranormal romance series that I had ever read and really opened the door to the genre for me. Maggie Shayne is a great author and while she fell just a tad short in this one for me I can see how it adds a very imporatant piece to the world she has built.
After the demises of DPI - an organization set on destroying vampires - things seem to be going better. But there are still a few rogue agents running around and they have set their eyes on Amber Lily - a unique creature introduced earlier in the series that lives between the world of vampire and human. Willem Stone - a very mortal man - is really all that is there to stop them at first. He's quite a fantastic hero in several different ways.
Willem Stone has a strange link with a gypsy woman names Sarafina - a name you will recognize if you've read the previous book in the series. She's quite a bitch through the whole story and I never really like her - which made it hard to enjoy the romance of the book. I really enjoyed the continued world building and development Shayne brought out in this one though. It's what has kept me returning to the series over the years. The world is not stagnant, and even if I don't like all the characters, they all have a role to play that is special and all their own.
Maggie Shayne's writing skills are definitely improving. Once again Shayne turns an evil villain into a hero(ine). Not just romance anymore, this book includes lots of mystery and suspense. Starting with multiple story lines, they all come together for a great ending.
