Small beginnings leading to grand finales, arrived at with plenty of humour, a chaotic family and a short fuse - that’s always been Hawk’s style. It’s no different in Jericho Road ... It starts with a stolen pocket watch that allegedly belonged to Heinrich Himmler. Hawk agrees to try and find it, but within days of poking his nose in the girl who stole it is murdered. The watch’s current owner, a bad-tempered old man whose dangerous behaviour and verbal violence, make him a prime suspect, is charged with the crime...Police are delighted to have such a straightforward result, but it seems far too easy to Hawk, too pat. He digs further, driven by a feeling that if he’d kept out of it the girl would still be alive. And as he digs he uncovers a far nastier crime than mere murder...
I’ve been writing for television all my life, everything from Z Cars, through Juliet Bravo, Boon, Lovejoy, The Bill, Poirot - right up to Midsomer Murders, which I helped to establish. You can see a catalogue of my television and stage work on my website.
I also write crime novels featuring a high ranking police officer Nathan Hawk, who was 'required to retire' as we English so delicately phrase it. Hawk's a man with a fiery temper, biting wit and four grown up children he worries about, sometimes with good reason.
This is the third book by this author that I have read ( in 3 days) . The writing is excellent, the story line very good and the characters feel very familiar. As a long time fan of Midsummer, the settings and cast feel like old friends. It makes reading these books a most enjoyable experience.
Although Hawk is not the epitome of cool, he gets the job done. Interesting minor characters increase reading pleasure. Settings in UK add to the story. Followed the story by looking at locations on Google. Adds nicely to the story.
I've come to really enjoy the characters in this series, even Nathan's sometimes quirky and neurotic children. The plots are well constructed and usually have a few surprises.
