Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name. See this thread for more information.

It’s wonderful for a writer to live near Washington, DC as I do. The research resources are fabulous, the scenery is great – complete with monuments, gorgeous public buildings, and the most amazing, weird, convoluted, political people – and I get to be here with the most awesome family, friends and neighbors in the world. I live here with my wonderful husband (he’s my personal hero), my two delightful, growing-too-fast sons, and my three silly rescue dogs.

As former marketing executive, I worked for research parks, governmental concerns and not-for-profits, (which is also great fodder for the writer’s mind!) but now I’m happily employed as a consultant and full-time writer. I’m a member of Romance Writers of America, Science Fiction Writers of America, Mystery Writers of America, and Thriller Writers. I’m also a proud member of the Washington Romance Writers, an RWA chapter, as well as several online RWA chapters. I'm a former board member of the Romance Writers of America.

One of the most enjoyable things I get to do as a consultant and writer, is to teach. I enjoy connecting with my clients, readers and other writers. Having also worked in the funeral and cemetery business for nearly thirteen years, I teach a class on Body Disposal.

Being part of the Ad(d)ams Family, as you can imagine, Halloween is my favorite holiday. I love to work in the garden, run my dogs, hang out with my family, and write. Other than that, as another, more famous author says, the rest is subject to change without notice.

Grins,

Jeanne

Dead Run by Jeanne Adams

Romantic suspense. Previously titled Dark and Dangerous.
High octane that kept me up into the middle of the night to finish.
A explosive opening with well paced action, powerful family time and, of course, a tantalizing romance. The smart and savvy 10 year old ties it all together with intelligence and charm. Plus the dog? A true hero.

Dana and son Xaviar have been on the run and in hiding for years from her Mobster husband. The FBI hasn’t been successful in keeping them safe so Dana rigs her own home with trip wires, planted bombs and even a safe room in the basement. She’ll do whatever is necessary to keep her son safe and away from his dangerous father.
Caine went undercover to try to keep Dana safe but there is a leak on the FBI side as well. Caine, Dana, Xaviar and trained pet shepherd Shadow travel from safe house to safe house staying just one step ahead from disaster.

4.5 stars. I read a paperback copy printed 2015 that had a dozen and a half text / type proofing errors that always throw me out of the story. Fortunately there were very few in the last 75 pages.

4.5 stars. Wow, a great realty-based, action-packed romance suspense story. It kind of reminded me of those movies starring Jodie Foster, you know the ones with edge-of-your seat action and suspense, a smart and realistic heroine running for her life, and a tight realistic plot. No Navy SEALs or damsel in distress in this story. The heroine is trying to escape the clutches of her drug lord ex-husband, who wants her dead and their son as an heir to his illicit business. The hero is an FBI agent who has been working undercover for years trying to bring the drug lord down. The romance starts slow as the book focuses on the plot and action, but about half way things begin to heat up to sizzling. I can't believe this was a debut. I enjoyed it!!

A very fine contemporary romantic suspense. "Dark and Dangerous" is the debut book by author Jeanne Adams. After I finished the story, I had to go research to confirm this was her first published book. It was so good I assumed she must have other books out...but no, this is her first. Her characters were so well drawn and the plot was so smooth...bravo! Just bravo!

The action in this story begins on page one and keeps going at break-neck pace until the end. The heroine and her son are believable and likable. The hero is definitely dark and dangerous, but also hot! When the three of them end up on the run, you're ready to rush out to help them so cheering them on is no problem. My biggest complaint was the length of the book. I think it needed to be a big longer to make the relationship more believable, but it did not interrupt my enjoyment one bit. If you're an Iris Johansen or Linda Howard romantic suspense fan, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book.

I got this book because it was heavily discounted on Kindle and it had really good reviews. Unfortunately, it didn't quite measure up for me.

The climax was excellent and thrilling, but it was about the last 15% of the book. The rest of it was like a procedural for hiding from a bad guy ex-husband.

There were things I liked. It opened with a major action sequence that seemed to set the pace for a white knuckle ride. But then things really slowed down.

Another thing I liked was the incredible competence of the heroine. Knowing she has to protect herself and her son, she's gone about arming herself with every bit of knowledge and ability she can get and it's used very well throughout.

The romance doesn't do anything but lay there until about halfway through. At that point it almost seems like an afterthought and a deviation from the suspense thriller I'd been reading. What? Suddenly they're in love? Where'd that come from? They're well suited, but somehow I didn't feel any emotional connection to them until way late in the story.

Adams is a very good writer. She's obviously done her suspense research. I just would like the romance to be a little more evenly dispersed so it lives happily alongside the suspense rather than either taking away from the other.

While I only give this one three stars, it's been followed up by another that I'm sure I'll get to. As I said, she's a very good writer, so I'm not turning away just because I had problems with the pacing and organization of this one effort. :D

4 ½ stars. Excellent and entertaining romantic action thriller. It could have used a bit more emotional fulfillment.

STORY BRIEF:
Dana is divorced from Donovan a drug trafficker who is obsessed with getting his son back and killing Dana. Dana and her 10-year-old son Xavier have been on the run from Donovan. They were in the witness protection program for a while but that wasn’t secure. Now Dana prefers to be in charge of her own security. She set booby traps and explosives around her home. The book opens with Donovan’s men attacking Dana’s home.

Caine is an undercover FBI agent who has been a henchman for Donovan for three years. Caine is one of the men sent to Dana’s home. He survives the explosives and gives her a code phrase to let her know he’s an undercover agent. Then he accompanies Dana and Xavier to a safe house elsewhere. There is a mole in the FBI with further attacks on Dana and Caine.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
Wow! The first attack scene with Dana’s booby traps and defense of her home was great! I don’t know if stealth helicopters exist (quiet – no noise), but I don’t care. I just realized I’m happy to have an author create helicopters that may not exist. It makes me think about so many authors who give thanks to people for their military advice and then say if there are any mistakes they are the authors’. I don’t care if there are mistakes in technology or procedures. This is fiction not a history lesson. Authors don’t have to give me factual information. Make it up. I want entertainment. Anyway, the reason I digress into all of this is because Dana had wind chimes outside her house. It was a quiet windless night. Then the stealth helicopter arrives which stirs up wind but makes no noise, so the wind chimes notified her something was there. I loved it. It was one of several neat things she did.

I loved the way the author got inside Donovan’s thoughts and feelings as he tormented and frightened his men. He lived for power and control over others (page 56). I enjoyed feeling his evil. Many authors don’t show enough of that. Later in the book, I liked how Donovan guessed that Caine was an undercover agent. And then I liked how Caine guessed that Donovan might know he’s an agent. It reminded me of a chess game with moves and counter moves. I was also impressed with things the boy did – and the dog too. There was “no stupidity” in this book. And there was no “big misunderstanding caused by vague communication.” Sure there might have been a little vague communication as the couple was getting to know each other, but that was acceptable.

This is an action book. It’s an enjoyable ride all the way through. The main thing it lacks is an intense emotional feeling. It could have used a little more emotional development between the couple. This was the author’s first of four books (so far). I’m off to buy her second.

DATA:
Story length: 314 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: 2. Total number of sex scene pages: 5. Setting: current day Virginia, Florida and S. Carolina. Copyright: 2008. Genre: romantic suspense thriller.

This debut novel of Jeanne Adams proves to be more of a suspense novel with romantic undertones than an amplification of one another, heightening the overall impact of the story. From the first page I was thrown into the centre of all the action as mobster Donovan Walker sends out a team to recapture his ex-wife and son. The sole reason of his attention is his son, his heir, his legacy and he will leave nothing unused to get him back. Unfortunately, Dana and Xavier see it differently and entered WitSec (witness security) after Dana testified against him.

After years of a somewhat peaceful existence Dana and Xavier are attacked in their own home and Dana automatically shifts into a flight-or-fight mode. After activating her defense mechanism around the house she wants to bolt out of there like a bat out of hell with her precious son. But instead she stumbles onto one of the attackers and she points a gun into his face, only, he turns out to be an infiltrated FBI agent to unmask Donovan Walker.

From that point on Dana Markham, Xavier and Caine Bradley are on the run from a man bend on possessing the one thing that matters to him....a ten year old boy named Xavier.

The theme of a mother and a child on the run from their enemies is one I like to read about, it highlights the resilience of a woman and the instincts of a mother going the distance for her child. Dark And Dangerous draws this picture with a high-risk chase as man, woman and child need to take it all with a tenacity to remain alive at the end of the road. The accent of this novel thrives on the suspense, the author gradually builds this up and raises the stakes a bit higher with every chapter I read. Adams adds and deducts my suspicion of certain enemies when Donovan Walker takes the lead. He is everything a criminal on a power-rush is meant to be. He has everyone cowering before him, making his presumption of being all powerful even greater. He has the money to back it all up and the evil intent to walk over bodies to get what he wants. Instantly I disliked him and the more I read, the more I wanted him behind bars or dead for all that mattered. An ideal antithesis for Caine and his dark knight persona, he is an FBI agent who has not all that much to lose which makes him dangerous to deal with.

While the suspicion is raised, a secret hide-a-way is revealed and a woman who has more than her share of experience in these situations has her son's happiness at stake here. Dana possesses an attitude and sass to cope with a very perilous situation that could take a turn for the worse at any moment. The intimate relationship between Xavier and Dane is laced with love, humor and a bond that is hard to grasp as it comes from being in a high-tense situation for all those years together. It is done with both a feel for the angst and danger as it emphasizes on the unconditional love between a mother and a son.

Bit by bit the suspense got to me and succumbed me into a story where survival becomes an essential. There is also a budding attraction going on with a flavor for trust issues to work out. It never delves very deep into the emotional background and remains flirtatious until the last third of this tale. While I regret the loss of more in-depth emotions or body heat between Caine and Dana it did contain a common sense. Their safety comes first before the leading couple can honestly give into their feelings. There is an air of self constraint between them resulting from the knowledge they cannot let their guards down. Instead of the attraction bursting from the pages it is more of a poised attraction that is only released on one or two occasions.

Xavier is just as much a leading character as Dana or Caine is for that matter. He is street smart and holds his own in threatening situations when at the same time something can happen that shows he is just a kid hungering for safety. There are a lot of supportive characters though not many stand out, I enjoyed Chaz and TJ from the B&B along with Agent Sears and Trevain leading the FBI case against Donovan Walker. They are functional, they add their purpose without distracting the reader from the essential story. Everything came together in the last third of this novel, keeping me bound to the pages in a battle for ultimate freedom.

I was entertained and taken by the suspense in Dark And Dangerous but simultaneously the romance fell short for me and didn't give me that intense satisfaction I crave as a romance reader. Even if the expectations for this novel weren't entirely met, Dark And Dangerous is a nice, well-plotted, well-paced and a well-written story that contains hours of enjoyable reading.

Dark and Dangerous is author Jeanne Adam's debut novel, and I have got to say, it starts out with a bang and just keeps on going. This novel is one of the best in its genre, Romantic Suspense, that I've read in a while. The romance, action, and suspense are blended together perfectly in this well plotted, fast-paced novel. I was drawn into the undercover world and amazed at how she was able to give such great details without taking me out of the story or overwhelming me.

The suspenseful first meeting between Dana Markham and Caine Bradley is one that was unexpected and unforgetable. And, as you read the attraction between Dana and Cain develop it's hard to believe they didn't set off sparks with their first kiss.

Dana is a strong heroine who has learned how to survive and protect both herself and her son, Xavier, from the clutches of her ex-husband, Donovan Walker. I believe if she had to, Dana could have survived and ran from Donovan without the help of Cain, but together they make a strong team and are each other's equal.

Caine is a FBI undercover agent who knows his job and how to succeed in it. He also knows that an agent should never get close to those they are protecting... but, it can't be denied, there's something different about Dana and Xavier. He'll go above and beyond to assure their safety, even if it means breaking the rules.

I can certainly see Dark and Dangerous on the big screen as an action movie. It has all the right elements and balance of action, suspense, and romance that'll quickly draw you into the story from beginning to end.

I definitely recommend Dark and Dangerous to any Romantic Suspense reader and to those who'd like to try this genre.

Right from the start you see that this heroine can take care of herself. First chapter of this book has Dana Markham kicking ass and not bothering with names.

Dana and her 10 yr old son have been on the run for years from her ex husband who is dirty in many ways. She's learned that she can depend on no one but herself to stay alive as the FBI has fumbled more than once. In the latest attempt by her ex husbands hire killers to kill her and take their son she manages to kill all but one and that one turns out to be an undercover FBI agent who ends up taking responsibility for Dana and her son by going on the run with them.

I didnt realize until about half way into this that I had read this years ago under another name. I take it since the cover and name of the book have changed its a complete reboot. I only say this to those who may have read the first book Dark and Dangerous (which is no longer available). If you haven't read that book then I recommend Dead Run. This was a fairly fast paced read with like I said a very exciting opening and two people who fall in love while on the run with lots of great scenes with her son and their very protective dog.

This is a new author for me, and this is her first book, although it was published in 2008, so I'm late to the party. It's a Romantic Suspense, which is one of my favorite genres when done well. The book follows Dana Markham, a woman who testified against her drug lord husband and is now in hiding from him along with her 10 year old son, and Caine Bradley, the FBI agent assigned to protect her. Adams does a terrific job of making the reader feel Dana's fear and desperation, as well as the strength that has kept her alive for the last several years. She's tough and resourceful (and so is her son) and Adams really puts the reader in her shoes. Caine Bradley is strong and protective and has to learn that Dana Markham is a new breed of witness--she doesn't stand back and wait to be rescued, she rescues herself, and if he wants to help, then fine. The characters were wonderfully drawn, the action scenes intense and realistic, and ultimately the romance was lovely. I've already downloaded her next book, which is the best recommendation I can make!

I found the heroine to be really annoying. There was no chemistry between the two characters. Everything felt kind of forced. As I read the book I just couldn't work up the want or need to care about these characters. The premise of the book was good, but story itself was really flimsy. Maybe her next book will be better.

Overall a good book, worth reading, but nothing very different from a lot of other romantic suspense books.

This is the first time I have read anything from Mrs. Adams. And I have to say that this book starts off with a bang {literally} and will pull you into the story and hold your attention to the end!!!!

I actually loved Dana. I thought she was strong, independent, resilient, head strong, resourceful, and sassy. She hasn't had an easy time of it since leaving her ex-husband who is a really bad dude and testified against him. She's been in protective custody with her son and is on the run once again as her ex is after their son and wanting her dead. I loved that Dana would do anything to protect her son.

Oh agent Caine Bradley. How I fell in loved with him right off the bat. He was definitely all protective alpha male and he was definitely Swoon worthy. Though I think the only down fall with him was that we didn't really get to know him, know him if you know what I mean. I mean we got to know a little bit about him. But I feel like that there was so much more to him that we didn't get to know.

As I said this book started off with a bang and held my attention through out the whole book. I'm not sure if I would consider this a downfall to the book, but I'm a very visual person when it comes to books. I have the need to know what a character looks like and how old they are. I think we only got a brief description of Caine and only Dana's age. So I kind of felt a bit disconnected to the characters. But that didn't stop me from enjoying this book!!!!

I'm giving this book 4.5 Stars out of 5 and would definitely recommend it. I will have to check out other books by this author in the future!!!!

***I voluntarily read a copy of this book for my honest opinion***

Her ex is after her in a big way, the Feds are trying to protect her but they have a leak. Dana and Caine feel an instant attraction but resist given all the dangers. She's not a weeping willow and does as much to protect herself and son as the Feds. I liked that they were partners and not him saving the poor little female.

I don't remember what brought me to add this to my TBR pile nor why I had purchased it, but I don't regret it. It was a surprisingly decent read for someone who didn't expect much out of it. I think the main reason was the characters.

Dana was an impressively competent heroine, and I rarely find heroines interesting, competent or impressive. I admired her ability to booby trap her house in the event her ex-husband found her, her ability to stand her ground before FBI agents who think they should control everything, and her ability to defend herself with "legal facts" when questioned about her methods by said FBI agents. It was a really fun scene, and I laughed along with the hero. She seems to be more competent than so-called female FBI agents in other romance novels. I also really liked her relationship with her son. Instead of shielding him from the facts about their life, she trusted him with everything in the hopes of increasing their chances of survival - and it worked. It was really quite amazing. I think that it would take a strong woman to make a 10 year old boy a nearly full partner in their quest for survival for however many years they were hiding.

Dana's son, Xavier, was also a good character. I appreciated how the author seemed not to make him sound too young since so many authors I've read tend to have this problem. Sometimes he sounded older than he was, but it was quite plausibly explained by the life that he had had to live. I admired his courage and resilience, and for not losing his composure when he found himself in a bad situation.

I liked the hero, Caine Bradley, uncover FBI agent, as well. He was a pretty typical romanticized FBI agent so he didn't stand out too much. I felt that I didn't get to witness him as a FBI agent as much as I witnessed him as a regular "dad". I was attracted to the "dad" persona more than the FBI agent persona anyway.

And finally there is Shadow. What an awesome dog! XD

Although the plot of wife and son on the run from crazy, evil mobster guy is one that I've encountered, I liked the execution of it better in this book. It was a little more exciting, most particularly the climax when hero and heroine are trying to rescue the Xavier. I don't remember any of the other books making me feel glued to the scene, hoping to be able to finish reading before I get interrupted.

One last thing that I appreciated about this book was the fact that there were exactly 2 sex scenes - and they came around 60% and 80%. I was relieved that this felt more focused on the plot instead of peppering it with gratuitous sex scenes.

Now for the negative parts. I don't know whether this was due to the Kindle edition but the transition between one POV to another was practically nonexistent. The first time this happened, I was so confused about what was happening because one moment I was in Dana's POV, and the next I was in Caine's. I thought I'd missed a page or something because there was absolutely no indication that this POV switch was occurring so I kept flipping between the two "pages" and rereading. It was exasperating enough to kind of pull me out of the story.

There were a couple of no-communication misunderstandings which made me want to bang my head, but I think if I had not been so tired of "misunderstanding" plot devices, it might not have irritated me. I also got annoyed by Dana's constantly lustful thoughts about Caine. Was it really necessary to have 80% of her thoughts be about how much she wanted to jump him?

Apparently Xavier is multicultural. It's mentioned in the second half of the story. While on the one hand I am all for multicultural main characters, especially if their diversity is not painfully described to show how multicultural they are, on the other hand, what's the purpose of mentioning this if there was absolutely nothing else to indicate that the boy was multicultural? In fact, only from what I could glean from the scenes with his birth-father, I can suppose that he is either half or full Hispanic. Say, is it possible to have a Hispanic with the name of Donovan Walker? I don't know about Dana.

There were a couple of typos but no unforgivable errors in spelling or grammar. I liked the author's voice and writing style, and the humor she injected into some of the scenes. All in all, it was a decent, entertaining read.

I've had this book since 2008 "to read" and started it once before, but could not get immerse myself. Flash forward 8 years and I tried it again because I'm determined to weed out my TBR pile. I made it to around page 100 and I could not get into the story or interested in the characters.

It had potential! Something was hokey for me in the main villian "Donovan" way of intimidating people. The heroine Dana's character bugged me because she was playing this tough lady that learned to protect herself and her son from her ex-husband/mob moss (Donovan), but then would have them emotional moments--too often. The Hero, Caine, was an undercover FBI agent and I didn't like him, either. He had potential at some points, but for the most part I didn't like him.

Moving on.

Read Deadly little Secrets (bk 3) first which was a definite 5 stars and a re-read. Seems as if Jeanne Adams just got to be a great read by the 3rd book. Dark and Dangerous (bk 2)was a pretty good read. Would have liked a bit more romance between Caine and Dana. The surprise was the author did a terrific job with writing Xavier. Usually kids are written so whiny or are so fictionally unreal, i.e. "goodie, goodie". The plot and the characters are well written. I would definitely read Deadly Little Secrets first then Dark and Dangerous (bk 2). You can skip Dark and Deadly - just silly. Although these books are not part of a series. Looking forward to the next book by Jeanne Adams. Hopefully she's hit her stride and the next book will be just as great as Deadly Little Secrets.

Wow! Much more than expected! What a fabulous read.

Description:

Sizzling seduction and hair-raising suspense combine in this gripping debut novel about a woman whose past returns with a vengeance. "Dark and Dangerous" will leave you rapt and breathless.

My Thoughts:

This ride starts out fast and keeps going. One of the best Romantic Suspense novels I've read. I am new to this author but it won't be the last book I read by her. Her characters are so well rounded and she doesn't forget that the details are important in this genre. Jeanne Adams a name I won't forget!

Solid 4 star rating from me!...a hearty recommendation for Romantic suspense lovers!

Great story for suspense but gave it a 3 star because even though it had a romantic story in it, it just didn't have enough romance for me. Others who prefer more suspense should love it. And, again, others may find the romance just right. I am looking forward to JA's next book because she can write.

Loved it!

Great story with a strong female character who is also a mom! It was nice to read a story where you get too know the characters, before they have sex.Sara protects her son ,from his father who wants her dead. Caine is FBI and is assigned to protect her and her.Sara does a good job protecting her son . But it's getting harder to do it alone.

I enjoyed every minute. The development was never obvious, and the twists were unexpected and thrilling. I will be sure to read any forthcoming books, hopefully soon.
