A cold dark night. A cemetery full of secrets. And murderous ghosts on the loose.
After more than a decade, Connor Mann is forced out of the psychiatric ward he once called home. He finds himself back in the town where he grew up, with a distant father, and a tragedy all too painful to bear.
His attempt to resume a normal life soon comes under attack when he encounters restless spirits lurking in the basement. And someone - or something - terribly vicious awaits him with open arms in nearby Pine Grove Cemetery.
Meanwhile, a series of unexplained murders begin to wreak havoc on the town, and a group of detectives work tirelessly on the puzzling case. Unbeknownst to them, an elderly Chinese man, Hu, is on the lookout for a nefarious priest, who might hold the key to unlocking the mystery.
As a legion of deadly ghosts cast an ominous cloud over Pine Grove, Connor must confront his tragic past and gather all his strength to defeat them. The battle against unimaginable evil will change everything he knows about himself, and the world.
Ron Ripley is a husband and father surviving in New England, a place which seems to be getting colder every day. He grew up across from a disturbingly large cemetery where he managed to scare himself every night before going to bed. Mostly because of the red lights that people put in front of the headstones. Those things are just plain creepy to a kid.
Ron enjoys writing horror, military history and driving through the small towns of New England with his family, collecting books and giving impromptu lectures on military history to his family, who enjoy ignoring him during those dreadful times.

Great novel by one of my favorite authors. Happy reading and have fun 🌙😀
Welll... the pacing was off. We just bounced allllll over the place like a kid who ate sugar and went into a trampoline park. I had no fondness of the MC.
Connor Mann saw something when he was a child and it caused him to be put into psychiatric ward for more than a decade. It's now time for him to be released and he is anxious about going home. His mother is dead and his father is an abusive drunk. He tries to live a normal life but when he sees something from his childhood and gruesome murders are happening in the cemetery across from him, he realises that his life will never be normal. With the help from a neighbour, Connor needs to get to the bottom of what is happening before it's too late.
Pot wise, I really enjoyed learning about Chinese Ghosts and the difference between them and the normal Ghosts. The lore was fascinating and I ended up Googling them. The pacing of this was fast paced and really creepy, especially when the Ghosts would say that they were Hungry!!! It gave me chills. I was also glad to see a twist on the normal Ghost books this author has written.
I liked Connor. He saw his mother being killed by a Ghost and was put into a psychiatric ward for a lot of his life. He is now out and finding it hard to adjust. When the Ghosts try to kill him, Mister Hu is the only one he can turn to, because Hu believes him. Connor, despite his faults, is willing to do whatever he can to stop the Ghosts.
In all, this was an exciting, new and entertaining book. I loved seeing the flashbacks at the end of the book, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what is next for these characters.
Once again, Thom Bowers is able to bring the creepiness alive!! His portrayal of the Ghosts was chilling and he brought the atmosphere to life. Thoroughly enjoyed his performance.
I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
I rarely read ghost stores because I'm kind of a wimp and don't like scary, gory books. (I think reading "The Amityville Horror" over 30 yrs ago put me off them (couldn't look in the mirror at night after I finished.. yikes). Anyway, I saw this (just 99 cents) in an email and checked it out. Looked just a little scary :-) so I tried it. I didn't think it would scare me like "TAH" did! And I was right. It was a good read, kept my interest, and the characters were very interesting and well written. I may pick up the next one.
I DO read the Ellie Jordan Ghost series (J.L. Bryan) and like it - creepy but not really scary. Waiting for the next one J.L.!!!
Although I personally didn't like this story as much as his others, I would recommend it for fans of horror. Editing still seems to be an issue, but not distracting enough to stop reading. The last two kindle versions of Mr. Ripley's books jumped back to the beginning or the middle of the book instead of going to the "before you go" section so you can leave a review. His characters are always unique and come alive on the pages. I look for his books when deciding what to read next. One of my favorite authors.
You have Conner Mann about to be released from a psychiatric hospital after been an inmate for well over a decade. This storyline has been built into an intense storyline. His mother is dead, his father an abusive alcoholic. He tries under the circumstances to live a normal life. You have gruesome murders in the cemetery across the street. He questions is it possible to live normally. The characters are believable and interesting. You have "normal" ghosts and "Chinese" ghosts. This book is fast paced and creepy. I highly recommend this book.
I liked the premise and I normally LOVE anything Ripley creates but so much was lacking in this story. I couldn't become invested in the characters, the story jumped around a lot (which is par for the course from Ripley) but was very inconsistent - between that and the abrupt ending I was happy to reach the end.
I'm going to have to give this story a second chance because this is not the usual caliber of Ripley's works.
After witnessing several deaths, Connor Mann is placed into a mental institution. Upon his release, he discovers that the ghosts of those who perpetrated the act are still there, and their numbers are growing. He teams with a neighbor to being dispelling the ghosts, but it may take more than he is willing to give to control these hungry ghosts...
Fabulous book and an amazing story! Again, Ron Ripley does not disappoint!
After witnessing the murder of his mother, and then next door neighbor, Connor is scared to death. Living in a home for several years, he is told he has to leave after his uncle passes, and the money is gone. Returning home, he knows he will have to confront the ghosts of the past, but he is not prepared for the steps he will have to take to keep himself safe.
One of the best books ever! I truly love Ron Ripley.
I love a story I can't put down, which means I read these way to fast. It always leaves me wanting more and sometimes I feel like I'm left hanging about a character. But to me it shows how well written something is when I can picture myself there and need to know more. So glad I found Ron Ripley.
I was given the Audio version of this book. Conner Mann is released from a mental hospital after ten years. He'd seen his mother's brutal murder at the hands of a siver fox that morphed into a dark man. The fox appears many times and a gruesome killing occurs soon thereafter. The fox is in fact a Chinese spirit of evil that has come to Conner's home town and is seeking fresh "food" for hungry ghosts, which now include Conner's dead mother. Conner joins forces with his neighbor, who happens to be seeking the fox and the evil it embodies. Hungry Ghosts is typical Ron Ripley. It has tons of gory killing and just plain scares to satisfy the most discriminating of horror fans. Grab it. Read it. Love it.
Another nuanced intelligent ghost story, with characters that are both flawed but hold real empathy. This is another brilliant fast moving tale that draws you in and keeps going at a pace. I can't wait for the next instalment.
Was very good reading. I myself have always been a little Leary of them. I love a good ghost story and this proved very entertaining. I love the mixture of Chinese and American. Would definitely tell my friends to read this.
I really enjoy Mr. Ripley's writing. Believable characters, great plot -- could easily see this becoming a television series. Also, excellently edited (unlike the majority of e-books). I definitely recommend this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this first installment but I'm very disappointed that Mr. Ripley didn't continue it. Curious as to why as I liked it better than the Haunted Collection.
Just finished Hungry Ghosts, wasn't what I was expecting in all honesty and this one felt a bit too drawn out, some of the text didn't feel necessary. Wasn't too enthusiastic about this one but I finished it.
Ron Ripley did it again! Another gripping ghost story! I hope the next book in this new series can be as amazing as the first! Asian ghost culture makes for an intriguing and suspenseful story!
