Wolffe Peak #2

Whispers in the Dark

Rate this book
This kitty doesn’t want to play with the big bad wolf.

Maddie hates werewolves. Has since the day Axel left and broke her heart. But a dark shadow looms over her ranch, one that threatens everything she holds dear. To protect her sisters, she’d do just about anything. Even if that means trusting the wolf who tore out her heart.

This wolf only has eyes for her.

Axel has made many mistakes in his life, but the worst was abandoning his mate—the only woman he’s ever loved. When the body of one of his pack-mates turns up on Maddie’s ranch, Axel realizes she’s in far more danger than ever. She needs him, even if she refuses to admit it. He walked away once, but now he’s been given a second chance. And this time, he won’t screw it up.

This book opens with a gruesome murder of a young wolf shifter. This woman was hunted, tortured and skinned alive. Her corpse was left on a the White Ranch. Who murdered her and why? Why was she left at the edge of another shifter's ranch?
The White Ranch is owned by a family of mountain lion shifters. They have kept their secret from the locals (humans), they have no wish to come out as the wolves have done. The White family is still grieving the loss of their father. Maddie, at 26, is the oldest daughter is set to inherit the ranch. She must protect her two sisters, Brooklyn, 17 and Paige, 10. She finds out that her father left part of the ranch to a former foreman of her ranch, Axel . Maddie and Axel have history. Axel loved her then left her with no word or reason. Axel is a wolf shifter that belong to the Wolffe Peak Pack. He would like nothing better than to get back into Maddie's life. Maddie is angry her father would leave part of her families ranch to a wolf shifter that left! The White Ranch is in danger, the well has been poisoned, cattle have been shot and horses let loose. Maddie has no choice but to involve the Wolffe Pack. Axel is one of the enforcers.
This story has good characters that you come to really care about. The mystery surrounding the dead and skinned shifter is very compelling. The second chance at love between between Maddie and Axel is sweet. I loved this book and I can't wait to read many more books about Wolffe Peak Shifters!!

Are you…purring? 5 FURRY HEARTS

Maybe. Wonder how else I can make you purr… His very presence stole her breath. And it riled up her cat to no end. We need to talk What do you want, Maddie? Nine years, Axel… a hell of a long time. You can’t just barge into my life like this! What the HOWL?!? Now THIS is one howlluva story and a half! It definitely has a few Dark moments, quite a few Whispers and a whole lotta GWENLICIOUSNESS!! I love how Gwen shared this story, the flow of it, keeping the secrets secret from us as much as the characters! Although I have to admit that I was so tense throughout most of the story, mostly because of those *beeping* secrets!! LOL I was worried about how long I would be "tortured" before the truth came out about why Axel left! I wanted Axel & Maddie to "hook up" right away, so I was on pins & needles waiting for that to happen, IF it would happen! I was tense about who was attacking the shifters and what damage would be done before he was discovered, who he was working with, and ALL of their identities! But NONE of that and ALL of it kept me glued to my tablet, cursing when I had to stop because "real life" was intruding! I have little to no experience with ranching - or shifting for that matter - but with Gwen's descriptive storytelling I was not only drawn in deep, but I felt like I could see, hear, feel & live everything that the characters did, that I was a rancher, that I was a shifter! Of course, falling for Axel, living the story as Maddie, also helped! It always amazes me just how REAL her characters are! They are complex, each with their own personalities, strengths & weaknesses, and no matter how much I try to convince them otherwise they still insist on saying, reacting, doing their own thing instead of listening to me! LOL But that is yet one more reason of many, why I love, Love, LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE of Gwen's books!! Now you may not have to read Reach for the Sky (book 1) to enjoy this one, but I really recommend it! Since it is Wyatt (the Alpha) and Skylar's story not only do you get a fantabulous story about how they meet, etc., but it also introduces you to other members of the Wolffe Peak Wolf Pack, one being Axel. Plus I just LOVE Gwen's books and think that they are ALL worth reading!! wink Gwen is a phenomenally talented author with this amazing, genuine gift for crafting the exact kind of stories that I love, Love, LOVE to read, creating the kinds of hero/heroine type of characters I LOVE to become and stories that are just as entertainingly awesome the third time around as they were the first time!!

I thought it couldn't get any better after reading the first book in this series and then I picked up this book and very quickly realised that as much as you adored the first book this one was even better!!!

You have got to love the fiery, strong and independent women in this series and that is one of the reason I adored this book so much and the fact that they don't need protection, they don't need a knight in Shining armour as they are more than capable of defending themselves and those that they love. As well as seeing this side of Maddie you also see a very vulnerable side of her that I really think will make readers love her and relate to her in all that she goes through it this book. The emotions that she feels throughout this book are written in such a way that you can sympathise and empathise with her. I love Wyatt’s character! It comes across that he has always tried to do the best thing for the people that he cares about but rarely is it looked upon favourably, he has also has quite a hard life that he doesn't really acknowledge or talk about. He is such a passionate man that will go to the ends of the earth to protect those he loves, he has such a big heart that only a family and his mate can fill.

This storyline is extremely thrilling and you are kept on the edge of your seat the whole time, waiting for the next surprise that will happen. You definitely cannot predict what will happen and that is also an aspect of this book I loved as well as the big presence of family and the fact you don't need to be blood related to be family.

This is a must read book and it can probably be read as a stand alone book but will definitely make more sense to read the first book before this one as you will understand it a lot better, plus both books are amazing!!! This is well worth a 5* rating book and I can't recommend this author's books enough!!!!

Maddie and her family are shifters, hiding who they are from their neighbors....or so they think. Axel is a wolf shifter who was in love with Maddie years ago...and then he left abruptly, taking Maddie's heart with him. When she finds a dead wolf shifter on her property, she's forced to call the Wolffe Peak alpha for help. Maddie hates dealing with wolves but she has no choice....she just hopes she doesn't have to deal with Axel, the shifter who broke her heart years ago. When Axel learns what's happening on Maddie's land, he immediately declares himself her protector. Can these two overcome their past hurt and work together to discover what's going on? Will Axel be able to keep everyone safe? And why would Maddie's dad leave Axel part of the ranch when he's the reason Axel left in the first place?

I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved Maddie and Axel and all the supporting characters. There's danger, mystery, laughter, and smexy-times. And, while this is the second book in the Wolffe Peak series, I don't think you need to have read the first book (but I do think you should as I loved it as well). Note: this story has an HEA but there is a behind-the-scenes mystery/bad guy that does not get resolved in this book.

Maddie is caught in the crossfire of a war on shifters. Maddie is a mountain lion shifter, whose lived under the radar due to precaution her father put into place.

She has recently lost her father and is now responsible for her younger sisters and the family business. Her father's will brings her wolf shifter ex, Axel back into her life. It's a unwelcome surprise for the grieving Maddie.

The same day she tells Axel about the will, the body of a wolf shifter is found on her property.
This causes tension among the pack and heightens suspicion toward an anti-shifter hate group.

This development also stirs up questions about the safety of Maddie, her family and their shifter status. When Axel decides to stay on for protection, unspoken truths are revealed that explain why Axel walked out of Maddie's life.

For most of the book, there are several looming questions of who to trust, who's responsible, and where's the danger coming from? But those aren't the most pressing questions on Maddie's mind.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book and was not compensated in any way.

Maddie is a mountain lion shifter and in the past was involved with a werewolf called Axel who left suddenly and broke her heart. With the discovery of a dead packmate of Axel's on her ranch there is a shadow that is threatening both her and her sisters. With the passing of her father, both the ranch and her sisters are her responsibility. So she is faced with an impossible choice - trust Axel or die. Can he step up and save the mate he abandoned?

Wow - lots of action in this story. The relationship aspects between the two were intriguing when it came down to understanding why he left her the first time. Mixed into the danger and action it was a focus of the story on how to tell who you can and cannot trust. I'm sure we all have that in our own lives even if it isn't as high stakes as this story. It was nicely told, well written and quite addictive as the story developed.

This is the 2nd book and it keeps getting better. Madison's father dies leaving her to raise her two younger sister's and to run the ranch on her own. But when her father's attorney shows up he tells her 25 percent of the ranch was to be left to Axel, someone she hasn't seen in 9 yrs,and doesn't ever want to see him again. She was in love with him but he left without a word leaving her broken hearted.
Now she has to find him and tell him she will buy back his part of the ranch because he is not welcome. Anywhere near her or her ranch. But when things start happening and a body is dumped on her ranch Axel moves in to protect her and her sisters. Lots of Acton, suspense, drama and laugh. I loved it

Whispers in the Dark is a second chance love story with a twist. Maddie and Axel are fated mates. Plus Axel is a wolf and Maddie is a mountain lion. Even after nine years apart Maddie can't resist Axel's Cajun charm. Beyond the romance though there is a baddie with a deadly plan and the mountain lions are target one. Wyatt and the wolf pack come in to assist, can they find and beat this baddie in time. These characters are so likeable they draw you into their lives and this world. The storyline keeps you turning the pages as fas as you can. And the romance breaks you heart then puts is back together again. Sigh...

Get ready for an emotional roller-coaster ride! I was wowed from the start & did not want to stop when I had to, by this 2nd in series, riveting, PNR shifter must read! Plus, who doesn’t love a second chance romance story and all the angst leading up to a HEA, right?! ... “Whispers in the Dark” has a unique plot, with mystery & twists, great descriptions and well-defined characters and a strong, likable H/h... Make sure to have plenty of available time to read, coz this is definitely a page-turner that will engage readers! I voluntarily read this without any outside influence & honestly recommend this to all adult fans of fiction.

Maddie hates werewolves and has for the last 9 years. She just lost her father and is trying to keep her sisters and ranch all together. She is throw for a loop when her father's attorney announces a little surprise in his will. Axel has kept one heck of a secret form his pack. When a wolf goes missing and ends up dead on the ranch, it's time for secrets to work themselves out.
Maddie and her sisters are amazing! I loved Brooklyn's spunky teenage attitude. I want to know more about Houseman, Sterling and Trinity. I have questions and they need answers!! Can't wait to see how things continue to unfold.

Second in a fun and exciting shifter series. This one takes a different approach than the first one to me. That's not bad, I enjoyed both books. This one reconnects to shifters that we're fated to be mates. But the past and several years between has changed them both. But when there are humans out to persecute and kill shifters, the need to protect will come forward. The series is getting exciting and I can't wait for book three.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of the book.

Yeah another one in this series to tantalize the senses. In this one there is Maddie and Axel to grab you. This is also a second chance it would seem. Danger puts them in the same path again. When her father passes he is around but something else seals it. Revealings will give us answers with the enjoyment of this one. This author is able to lure you in with no escape until you are consumed. Being each one a bit different in this series is a plus also.

Second in series. Grips you from first to last page. Wolf shifters are out to the humans but not other shifter types or so they think.A group against shifters targets Maddie and her family (they are feline shifters)which brings Axel back into her life. Well written, danger, murder, emotional and sexy moments keeps you pinned to the story. Not sure who the next book will be about but it's a automatic read for me.

Loved this book. Second book in the series and just as great as the first. The storyline was exciting, entertaining, and very enjoyable. The story moved at a good pace and flowed smoothly. This authors wrting style is effortless as seen in her books. Loved the characters who are strong and feisty but also show compassion and the chemistry between them is plain to see. Overall another great book and can’t wait for book 3 in the series.

This book is just as fantastic as the first book in the series, Reach For The Skye (Hope I spelled that right lmao, it's getting late). Gwen has this uncanny ability to make it all so real, to put you at the edge of your seat and make chills run down your spin while making you feel like you should probably run for your own life. Another wonderful read <3

I consider this read an indulgent pleasure. A well-paced plot, with some interesting sub-plots (touching on politics and prejudices). I liked the characters, I enjoyed the plot, and I found the secondary characters fun and added some wonderful tension to the plot. Well done, I loved the story.

Whispers in the Dark

I was hoping they would figure out who was the menace financing the attack on the shifters. I wouldn't be surprised if it was another army man or a different species looking for revenge.

Cute story! Great characters! Not the same ole wolf story! Curious to see what the future brings for this couple. I hope they pop up in The background of future books in the series!!

Gwen gave us another smash hit with this book. This is the second book in this series and she has done a great job blending the first and second book together wgile giving us another beautiful story.

This story will bring out the tears in you and you learn about young love ripped at the seams by a father who thought he was doing best for his daughter. Nine years later a dead girl brings the two back together to discover who is trying to kill the shifters.

Will the murders be caught and will true love find a way through it all. Grab your tissues and enjoy the ride. You might loose sleep because you won't be able to put it down.
