This book unfolds the abc's of spiritual life over the course of several letters to Abbot Nikon's spiritual children. It deserves a far, far wider readership than it has now, and I am forever grateful to the translators. These are letters containing a spiritual knowledge that was experiential, suffered through, and the truth of the life in Christ resounds in it so clearly.

"We must use our downfalls and negative traits common to fallen man as tools to gain humility. A person who has acquired humility commands a state of mind by which all attacks of the devil are deflected. He relies not upon himself, but upon the Lord. And the Lord, Who is Almighty and Who conquered the devil, overcomes the evil one in our soul. This He can do when we fight not according to our own will, but through calling upon the Lord and giving ourselves over to His will."

This book is officially in my top five favorite Orthodox Christian books. This is a must read and is easily digestible by anyone. I chose to read a letter per day because each letter that is written has a lot to contemplate and consider.

Thank God for the simple path and thank Abbot Nikon for pointing us towards it. Abbot Nikon, pray for us! This is a life-long book. Meaning, I will return to it again and again through this life.

It is such a blessing to have a compilation of Abbot Vorobiev’s letters here. This book warms the soul and I will return it to again soon.

“Even in the very act of sinning one must appeal to the Lord and prostrate oneself before God without shame, saying: ‘Lord, see what I am doing, have mercy on me, help me free myself from the power of Satan’.”
