The script for the stage production of the bestselling Khaled Hosseini novel A Thousand Splendid Suns , as adapted by playwright Ursula Rani Sarma.
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever-escalating dangers around them--in their home, as well as in the streets of Kabul--they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, playwright Ursula Rani Sarma reimagines Hosseini's novel to show how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.
A stunning accomplishment, this reimagination of A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling production about unlikely friendship and indestructible love.
This adaptation was first performed by the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco in February 2017.
It is a difficult story to read, something very viscerally upsetting about it. It is also awe inspiring to see, to be reminded of how much women can endure and thrive despite. As play text it's not perfect, it often slips into directing the actors instead of presenting the text with the nuance that might inform a performance. But the story is compelling and with good performers will make for a compelling performance, I'm sure.
At some point, I feel that this book just explores to what extent the womens can be treated cruel. Before reading this book, I never knew, at some places in Earth, womens are not regarded as a human beings too. Despite all this, they are obliged to remain with the rules and regulations men has created for their own welfare only. Society needs a drastic change. Nevertheless, this is a very must read book !!!
🍁Plot A Thousand Splendid Suns is a heart-wrenching story of love, devotion, admiration, and dedication. Mariam and Laila are totally different women but they are bought together by the tragic sweep of war. When Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. An indestructible bond that grows between Mariam and Laila is treasured throughout this novel. Though the war devours everything in both of their lives, they always cherish the bond between them. The ending of this book was miserable, deplorable and totally unexpected. I am not even exaggerating, I cried buckets and buckets after reading this novel. This novel will always hold a very special place in my heart.
🍁Character and writing Style I can't praise the character of Mariam and Laila enough. Tariq and Laila's Father are also in my heart. The writing style of Khaled Hosseini is just amazing and no one other than him would have done justice such an amazing plot. A must-read for everyone out there.

This book will make you cry so much. So before you start reading this book buy some tissue. Beautifully depicted the story of love, compassion, sorrow and suffering that revolves around two women of different times and generation but connection via an untitled bond. The sufferings portrayed in this novel is so realistic that it will make one understand the true meaning of it. A must-read book.
It was actually a good experience to read this book as I was able to relate to laila and her life more how he lost Tarik but gained in the end but I thought that ending would me some more interesting but the ending actually had that rasheed was murdered by Mariam but it could have a hidden and more interesting ending as my my learning.
This book can be very heavy for someone who imagines themselves in the character's situation. Tragedy, sorrow, pain, atrocities etc. The situation of women in Kabul from 1965 to 2003 is explained so vividly with the beautiful fictional story which can tie you until you read its last page. It can give you goosebumps many times while reading.
This book left me speechless. It's unquestionably one of my favorites. It's an eye-opening, heart-wrenching, heartbreaking, educational, and definitely unforgettable book. I love the way Mariam's life is connected to Lila's. This book definitely made me a fan of Khales Hosseoni's writing.
This is a story about Mariam and Laila. The story starts with Mariam's story. She lives in Kolba with her mother. Her childhood was challenging. She once asked her father to show a cartoon movie in his cinema as a birthday present, and that is when her life turned upside down. She was only fifteen when she married Rashid and moved to Kabul. After marriage, her life becomes more complicated and challenging. In Kabul, she meets with Laila. Due to some circumstancies, somehow, Mariam becomes the mother Laila needs and Laila becomes the daughter Mariam always needs.
For me, the most heart-wrenching part was that Mariam always wanted to have a good, healthy relationship with her dad, but she didn't even get to know when he died.
