"WE HAVE YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER. HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO." That's the text message Supreme Court Justice Arnold Hirschfeld receives as hearings commence in the U.S. Supreme Court to determine the fate of the 28th Amendment - enacted to criminalize abuse of power on the part of our political representatives. In court to defend the amendment, retired U.S. District Court Judge Cyrus Brooks observes his old friend and law school classmate Hirschfeld acting strangely and dispatches veteran D.C. homicide detective Frank Lotello to find out why. In the meantime, Hirschfeld's precocious and feisty 11-year-old diabetic granddaughter Cassie, brutally kidnapped to control her grandfather's swing vote upholding or invalidating the amendment, watches her insulin pump running dry and wonders which poses her greatest threat, the kidnappers or the clock. As Brooks is forced to choose between saving our nation or saving the girl.

Ronald S. Barak, bestselling author, Olympic athlete, law school honors graduate, and experienced courtroom lawyer, is uniquely qualified to write his novels that appeal to all political and legal thriller fans.

Described by his readers as a cross between Agatha Christie, Lee Child, and John Lescroart, bestselling author Barak keeps his readers flipping the pages into the wee hours of the night. While he mostly lets his characters tell his stories, he manages to get his licks in too.

Barak derives great satisfaction from knowing that his books not only entertain but also stimulate others to think about how things might be, how people can actually resolve real-world problems. In particular, Barak tackles the country’s dysfunctional government representatives—not just back-seat driving criticism for the sake of being a back-seat driver, but truly framing practical remedies to the political abuse and corruption adversely affecting too many people’s lives today. Barak’s extensive legal background and insight allow him to cleverly pollinate his fiction and today’s sad state of political reality.

Barak resides in Pacific Palisades, California, where he is hard at work on his next novel.

I chose to re-read this piece after reading the series prequel, oddly released AFTER this book. Highly recommend doing things in that order, as this novel offers new and rich additions with the understanding of ‘The Puppet Master’.

Ronald S. Barak presents readers with a sensational novel that delves into the world of US constitutional politics, kidnapping, and a developing courtroom drama. When a girl is taken from off the street on her way to school, no one seems to notice. The country’s attention turns towards Washington, D.C., more specifically the US Supreme Court, where a monumental case is about to be argued before the nine justices. The premise surrounds the introduction of the 28th Amendment to the US Constitution, which seeks to tighten the responsibilities of congressional members. The controversy surrounds not only the content of the amendment, but that it was not introduced by Congress and the state assemblies. The National Organization for Political Integrity (NoPoli) chose to hold a constitutional convention with delegates of its fifty state branches, crafting and passing the aforementioned amendment. Having made its way through the lower courts, it is now time for the nine justices to rule not only on the right of Congress to sue on constitutional grounds, but also on the content of the 28th Amendment. With such an impact on the future of America, the case is being carried live on television for everyone to see, as it develops. During the Chief Justice’s opening remarks, Justice Arnold Hirschfeld’s cell phone buzzes with a text; his granddaughter, Cassie, has been kidnapped and the only way she will be returned safely is when the amendment is quashed. Panicked, Justice Hirschfeld must follow the rules laid out for him, but makes some veiled contact to ensure that his family is aware of the situation. While not wanting to tip his hand to what’s going on, Justice Hirschfeld reaches out to have an investigation commenced, though the burner phones being used and lack of substantial clues makes finding Cassie all the more difficult. Lawyers for NoPoli and Congress battle it out, exploring what the Founding Fathers might have meant with Article 5 of the US Constitution and trying to parse out a modern day solution, all in a compacted oral argument setting, where justices openly hurl questions at the attorneys, who seek to maximise their allotted time. While arguments continue in the Court, Cassie is being kept in a secluded location, unsure why she’s been targeted. What she does know is that her diabetes will not remain under control if this lasts much longer. Bonding with her captor, Cassie is able to soon learn that her grandfather’s role in the current set of legal arguments could lead to her freedom, or untimely demise. Working off the radar while media outlets start sniffing around, Metro Homicide Detective Frank Lotello tries to craft an agreement to ensure that Cassie is released and Justice Hirschfeld can sway his colleagues. However, the constitutional arguments are compelling, forcing many to wonder why oral arguments show Hirschfeld speaking against everything he appears to hold dear. In the shadows, someone is trying to push for this amendment nullification, but at whose request? Will the Court rule properly on this monumental case and allow young Cassie the freedom she deserves? Barak has stitched together this wonderful novel that captures the reader’s attention from the outset and does not release its grip until the final pages. Highly recommended for those who love legal thrillers with a constitutional flavour, as well as the reader who find crime thrillers to their liking.

A friend of mine recommended this book to me the first go round, feeling that I might enjoy both its legal and criminal aspects. I had it sitting on my TBR list for a while, wanting to find myself in the right mood before diving in. Why I waited so long I will never know. As stated above, this book really should be grabbed after its more recently released prequel, in order to get the full impact. Barak is able to pull the reader into the middle of this book, whetting an appetite for detailed discussion of constitutional practices, as well as using the US Supreme Court as a central tool to deliver some of the important impetus to keep the narrative flowing. Barak utilises the subplot of Cassie’s kidnapping to keep the story balanced and allow the reader to enjoy a well-rounded piece, as though to dilute some of the legal and constitutional arguments that fill many chapters. Barak effectively crafts a set of characters who mesh well together, but whose individual stories come together in a seamless manner. This gives the reader the chance to better understand those they find interesting and push aside those who do not pique their interest. In a story full of legal tangents, Barak keeps the reader guessing and wondering how things will resolve themselves. Fast-paced with a narrative benefitting both short and longer chapters, Barak paces the story well with time stamps, showing the slow (and quick) progression of the case before the Court’s expedited decision. With Cassie’s life on the line, the reader will surely push through this one to discover the monumental finality of this first-rate novel, as well as all the hints peppered throughout relating to the previous novel.

Kudos, Mr. Barak, for such an impactful story. I will have to find some of your other work and devour it in short order. I’m eager to see what else you can bring to life with your superior writing style.

Imagine the terror of receiving a text saying a monster has your granddaughter. That is exactly what happened to a Supreme Court justice in the middle of a history making decision that could change politics in the United States. Does he follow the demands of the kidnapper and vote with his heart or does he vote with his conscience and morals reminding politicians they work FOR the people, to serve the people, not the other way around.

THE AMENDMENT KILLER by Ronald Barak is a political hotbed, brimming with suspense, incredibly well-developed characters and tension through the roof. In contemporary times when the integrity of every branch of the government is under constant scrutiny, one justice is under the gun to undermine all our country is based on. Mr. Barak has turned a legal thriller into a psychological nightmare that will make a direct hit into the hearts of parents and readers everywhere.

How far would you go to save someone you love? Would you betray all that you stand for, the people you serve? Brilliant writing, taut, riveting and addictive!

What a timely, real to life today story, welding political intrigue with the kidnapping of a young girl whose grandpa is one of the nine Supreme Court justices. I thoroughly enjoyed every word in this thriller from the first ' I have your granddaughter' until the surprising ending. The author does a wonderful job creating characters that you feel you know well, and like, while putting us right in the middle of a Supreme court vote about a 28th amendment. We learn how the court makes decisions, and follow the anxious justice Hirschfeld as he attempts to keep his granddaughter,Cassie, safe by following the kidnappers rules. The twists and turns throughout this story keep you turning pages as you become enthralled with the political case and on edge with the strength of Cassie, and the human actions of Thomas, the kidnapper. I was mesmerized reading about the way Thomas treats Cassie, this part of the story is so important and keeps the reader glued to the pages.
A relevant story in which the author teaches so much about the workings of the court when making a decision, while describing intense scenes with all the human emotions and feelings that arise. Any reader of legal thrillers will definitely enjoy this book, and I highly recommend it!
I was able to obtain an ARC of this story from the author,Ronald S. Barak, through AXP elite readers and gratefully thank them, as I am able to write my thoughts of this exciting story.

The Amendment Killer - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Supreme Court Judge Arnold Hirschfeld's diabetic granddaughter, Cassie, has been kidnapped to try and force him to vote corruptly at the constitutional convention hearing about the NoPoli corporation's validity in the eponymous 28th Amendment hearing.
The book alternates between the see-saw emotions of Cassie's distraught parents and grandparents and the courtroom arguments and political manoeuvering [which readers are all-to-familiar with under the incumbent US President].
Can Cassie stay alive with her insulin supplies dwindling and her blood sugar levels rocketing from the stress and adverse circumstances of her kidnap and imprisonment?
Who will rescue her from the murderous mood swings of the killer who has her in his power?
Can justice and integrity overcome the fears and foul play within the Congress and beyond it to the very highest levels of power?

This gritty political sensation of a book by Ronald S Barak, will keep you tense with apprehension throughout this excitingly possible thriller - hopefully with some fingernails left intact!
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

Barak beautifully sets the stage for a high-stakes legal thriller that is easily the best I have read this year. Former courtroom attorney Barak, who is also diabetic, expertly tells the story from alternating points of view. While Cassie’s chapters are as gut wrenching as you might expect, it’s Thomas’ that are the most effective. His sense of entitlement, envy and fanatical obsession with protecting his country are delightfully disturbing. Barak could easily have chosen more obviously explosive legal topics, such as Roe v. Wade, or a contested presidential election. His decision to aim for more intellectually stimulating fare is refreshing, and by the time the final page is turned, readers will have learned a lot about why the issue is so important. Highly recommended.

In The Amendment KIller, author Ronald S. Barak utilizes his legal knowledge and experience to weave a riveting legal thriller that takes the reader on a suspenseful adventure set in Washington D.C. with the backdrop of the prestigious United States Supreme Court.

From its traumatic beginning to climatic ending, The Amendment Killer is an action-packed and fast-paced gripping tale that follows Supreme Court Associate Justice Arnold Hirschfeld as he is faced with a serious conundrum, whether to uphold or abandon his true judicial beliefs and vote against the 28th Amendment in a landmark case for personal reasons in order to save his eleven-year-old granddaughter Cassie, who was kidnapped as an innocent pawn by someone who wants the USSC Justices to find standing and invalidate the 28th Amendment.

As a fan of legal thrillers, especially when they revolve around a political and judicial theme, I was eager to read The Amendment Killer, and I wasn't left disappointed! Author Ronald S. Barak weaves a powerful and compelling tale that has enough drama, suspense, intrigue, and surprising twists and turns that easily engages the reader to follow how Associate Justice Hirschfeld and retired US District Court Judge Cyrus Brooks approach the landmark case as it is being heard and decided in the Supreme Court, while Washington D.C. Detective Frank Lotello investigates the kidnapping and tries to beat the clock and find Cassie before it is too late!

I really enjoyed how the author utilized his legal knowledge and experience to transport the reader into the fascinating inner workings of the political and judicial world that is Washington D.C. When you add in the hidden secrets and dark political and legal dealings within the District, and the suspense and danger of the kidnapping investigation, you get an explosive story that takes you on one hell of a thrill ride and a book that you won't be able to put down!

I enjoyed this book. It was rather well written and the characters developed pretty well. My favorite was Cassie, a precocious eleven year old. She might have been a little too precocious as I am not sure an eleven year old would be as mature as she was. The novel is long. I would have preferred that some of the scenes not essential to the plot had been cut.

Unfortunately, I understand this is the sequel to a book that has yet to be published. The motive for the kidnapper stems from that yet unpublished prequel. I found that to be confusing. Not understanding the motive of the kidnapper just made the book less enjoyable for me than it could have been.

I do recommend this novel to readers who enjoy a legal thriller and don't mind not exactly knowing why the nefarious character does what he does.

The beginning started out just fine. After a few chapter in however, I felt the energy level dissipating. Yet, I held hope that this was a slight blimp and the story would pick up again shortly. This did not end up the case in my reading experience. The characters were un-engaging. Plus, I agree with another reader that the book did not seem to be either a political thriller or even a thriller.

There was a lot of conversation happening within the story but not a lot of action or decision making. For example, it felt like the kidnapping of Cassie was unnecessary. The poor girl. While, the kidnapping really did play a part in the story, the plot of it all was drawn out. Additionally, there was another aspect to the story that was neither strong as well. Therefore, it was kind of like reading dueling storylines. This made the reading process for me slow and painful.

‘He really wanted to monitor the girl’s grandfather—and the results of all his planning and efforts—in person.’

California author Ronald S. Barak is a law school honors graduate and a former Olympic athlete. While still in law school, he authored a bill introduced in Congress that overnight forced the settlement of a decades-long dispute between the NCAA and the AAU to control amateur athletics in the United States. In this Brooks/Lotello Thriller series THE AMENDMENT KILLER Ron addresses ‘the country’s dysfunctional government representatives framing practical remedies to the political abuse and corruption adversely affecting too many people’s lives today.’ Ron’s in-depth legal background and insight allows him to cleverly cross-pollinate his fiction and today’s sad state of political reality.

To best understand the background of this very fine novel an explanation of Barak’s proposed 28th Amendment to the Constitution criminalizing political abuse and corruption is important. In short then, ‘PREAMBLES - Priority. The priority of our elected and appointed public representatives must be to serve and not to be served. Integrity. Undue influence in our government has reached epidemic proportions and must be eliminated. Means. Amendment of the Constitution of these United States of America by “we the people,” independent of and unencumbered by our elected and appointed public representatives, is the only perceived realistic means by which to place the emphasis back on public service and to remove undue influence in our government. And the TERMS address the maximum term of service, campaign funding, compensation and expense reimbursement, severability and more. ‘The violation of any provision of this 28th Amendment shall be a criminal felony.’ From this very brief note we can appreciate the immediacy and relevance to our current corrupt political situation.

Barak’s plot synopsis provides a terse outline of the complex plot: ‘"We have your granddaughter. Here’s what you need to do.” That's the text message Supreme Court Justice Arnold Hirschfeld receives as hearings commence in the U.S. As Brooks is forced to choose between saving our nation or saving the girl.’

Timely, well crafted, realistic and pertinent, THE AMENDMENT KILLER is not only a spellbinding thriller: it is also an insightful examination of or present political situation. It is a must read.

Thomas T. Thomas III was keeping a very close eye on Cassie “Poppy” Webber (11, golfer).
Eloise Brooks (wife) at breakfast was not getting a whole lot of response out of Cyrus Brooks (retired U.S. District Court Judge). Which was normal for him.
Detective Frank Lotello had been shot but managed to survive.
Haddad (driver) & Thomas had kidnapped Cassie.
5/6, Chief Justice Sheldon Trotter gave his opening remarks.
Associate Justice Arnold Hirschfeld (Cyrus’ BMF) got a text.
The U.S. Supreme Court will determine the outcome of the 28th. Amendment in reference to the Congress v NoPoli Case.

Justice Taser, Justice Jose Gaviota, Justice Galanti, Justice Lukesh, Justice Stone, & Justice Nettleman rounded out the bunch.
After Cassie had awoken she noticed the diabetes pump had been removed from her tiny body.
5/10, How would the court case turn out?
Will Cassie survive?

Warning: This book contains adult content, expletive language which is only suitable for mature readers. It may be offensive or have potential adverse psychological effects on the reader.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written political thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great political thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free Gander House Publisher; Storycartel; Author; PDF book

I received this book in an advance copy. I enjoyed the strong female characters a lot. Granddaughter Cassie is a strong young woman, who works to keep herself fit and healthy.

Kidnapping and diabetes can't keep this young woman down.

I didn't enjoy the flashbacks to my last Constitutional Law class.

Cassie's grandfather, Poppy, a Supreme Court Justice, and his friend from NoPoli, retired Judge Brooks, do what they can to work things out for the welfare of family, and friends, and the legal system they stand for every day. Somehow, Brooks character also strikes me as funny with a dry sense of humor.

Poppy's wife, Nanny, pretty much conquers and controls members of the press, politics, family etc. who try to get in the way of the safe return of granddaughter Cassie. I want to go to war with Nanny at the helm, Cassie in the field, and Poppy and Brooks fielding negotiations and legal. Cassie's best gal pal, and her father, another top Legal Eagle, would flesh out a great team.

We'd be in better hands than the many and various operatives, who seem determined to make parodies of themselves and the system.
Oddly, the kidnapper who initially seems pretty awful and repulsive seems more sympathetic, at least to his own ideas about honor and Justice.

A good read for fans of political thrillers - especially if you like strong, smart women and other players more than gunplay.

Who is the Amendment Killer?
(Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of the book by Authors Cross Promotion (AXP). I read it and provided my honest review) The Amendment Killer a Brooks/Lotello Thriller by Ronald S. Barker is captivating, suspenseful, spectacular, and a must-read. From the first to the last pages the book whispers beckons for you to read more because that’s exactly what you want to do. Every spare moment I picked the book up and read what I could. The character-building from the main to the tertiary and background character(s) were well developed. The author did such a good job, that you remembered a tertiary’s name and where they fit into the storyline. The same for world-building. There was a rich context provided for the storyline to unfold its plot and character interactions within the plot but not get lost at any time because of the rich, deep and intense environmental markers. The Amendment Killer was a psychological thriller to be reckoned with and at the end when the puzzle seemed completed you find some critical pieces are missing. Hopefully, this suggests another book. Overall, I overwhelmingly enjoyed reading, being enveloped by and going along for the ride with The Amendment Killer. MY RECOMMENDATION: 5-STARS. Grab the book and read it. You will not be disappointed! –Tex.

What could have been a cracker of a novel filled with cerebral debates with regards to the rampant corruption in Congress and possible constitutional amendments to curb the same, ends up being an amateurish effort that neither succeeds as a political commentary, nor as a thriller dealing with the kidnapping of the granddaughter of a Supreme Court Chief Justice.

So much potential wasted.

Kindle Unlimited, currently on pre-order {October 30}, one of my please may I have a copy of this book to review {don't do that very often any more, just couldn't pass this one up}. This one is said to be basically a {Political} Thriller, something else don't do often, so yes definite interest. Disclosure, it's one of my APX Elite Reader reviews {Author XP}, but still, as always, just free book, and a whole lot of my own opinions. This one definitely more than hit close to home.

Article V convention of states solution starts with proposing three key amendments: a balanced budget amendment, term limits, and campaign finance reform. Each would have to be carefully drafted to be effective. They must not be harmful to the economy and must ensure essential safety nets, bureaucratic balance, and freedom of speech are maintained. {This is a quote from David Guldenschuh, lawyer, republican, one of the main heads for Article V}. Ronald Barak is/was lawyer and writer, committed and strident advocate of finding a cure for diabetes, committed 50% of the net proceeds of THE AMENDMENT KILLER to diabetes research and education. For copy of the Amendment {have to give email to send it to, not a big deal} can go to https://ronaldsbarak.com/28th-amendme... .

The Amendment Killer - Brooks/Lotello Thriller - Written by Ronald Barak
Family comes first, to all especially to a grandparent.

I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.

What did I like? There was a lot of information in this story that was true about the way the government does things and some of it was things that I had not heard of before. It also called out some of the bad things that can happen if we don’t as a nation should keep watch on what goes on in Washington and our government representatives. My favorite character was Brooks, he played his part and yet he was not a powerful man at that point in his life, just very respected for his time spent in the judicial system. Cassie ran a close second, her courage in getting through the situation that she found herself forced into was amazing. The self-independence that she pushed herself too was an admiral.

What will you like? Mystery, thriller, suspense, political, corruption, spies and chaos. When you add all those to an incredible storyline that is well written, throw in some amazing facts of our judicial system, a little history, and one tough little girl, you have one great read. I have read many of the best seller authors and this one is a cross of all of them, I think we need to watch this guy cause he is definitely going places. His characters were developed but they grew with every page and the ending was just a mind blower! Loved it…. Looking forward to more from this author. I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.

The main plotline is the granddaughter of an Associate Supreme Court Justice is kidnapped in order to influence the outcome of a case before the Supreme Court. The 28th Amendment ironically relevant to what's happening in the U.S today.

The book describes the case as "NoPoli was responsible for the unprecedented convention that claims to have lawfully enacted the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. To curb a variety of abuses on the part of many, if not most, public officials." Something really needed in today's political arena.

The granddaughter, Cassie, is an 11 yr old golfing phenom that is also an insulin dependent diabetic. That Cassie was diabetic is one thing that the kidnapper, Thomas, was not aware of when he planned the kidnapping. And it ends up playing an important part between the various people involved in the case.

I ended up learning more about insulin dependent diabetics than I ever knew in addition to learning about how cases are heard in the Supreme Court. The relationships between the various characters was a little confusing at first. But once I was able to identify the main characters, I was able to appreciate the detailed backstory of the characters and how they related to the current circumstances.

Justice Hirschfeld, the grandfather, is friends with one of the attorneys on the defense side, Cyrus Brooks. His co-counsel, Leah Klein, is married to Detective Frank Lotello of the Metro D C Police. Brooks and Lotello are able to figure out that something is wrong with Justice Hirschfeld and that it somehow involves Justice Hirschfeld's granddaughter.

The way all the characters are able to understand the situation involving Cassie and how to help rescue Cassie from the kidnapper while at the same time let the hearings on the 28th Amendment continue is very impressive. The author really knows how to make his characters seem real. But the way he wove the characters into the various sceniros.

This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. I was given a free copy of the e-book to read and give an honest review.

At first, when Thomas Thomas kidnaps Cassie Webber, it sounds like he is an experienced cold-blooded professional who has been hired by some unknown person or organization – apparently somebody with deep pockets – to use her to influence her grandfather, a Supreme Court Justice, to strike down the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. But as we learn more about Thomas and the case, we discover that this, primarily, is what he wants to believe about himself.

Which is not to say that he isn’t plenty dangerous.

He has had the experience. In fact, he was involved in some previous legal case which seems to have ended in his shooting a detective Frank Lotello. As it happens, Lotello’s daughter is Cassie Webber’s best friend. His wife is a lawyer for NoPoli, the organization that sponsored the 28th Amendment, and is defending it before the Supreme Court.

Thomas seems to have regarded the shooting of Lotello and the rest of the outcome of this earlier case as a failure, and this is what he is trying to recover from in his current activities. It is not clear whether the people he was working for (or thought he was working for) in that earlier case regarded his actions as a failure. But it becomes clear that they do not support him in his current endeavors despite what he seems to think, and in fact regard him as a dangerous loose cannon.

There is plenty of tension as Cassie’s grandfather, Justice Hirschfeld, her parents, and Cassie herself try to manage Thomas. And, to add to their difficulties, Detective Lotello, acting partly on his daughter’s behalf, discovers what has happened. Pretty soon it seems like everybody is in on it. And this is all while they are trying to convince Thomas that they haven’t called in anybody else.

It is Judge Brooks, the other lawyer for NoPoli, who comes up with a way to outsmart Thomas and get Cassie back. But will Thomas go for it? And can they make it work before he gets suspicious and something bad happens to Cassie?

Even without the mystery element The Amendment Killer would rank 4 or 5 stars. The discussion of the Supreme Court and it’s workings, including it’s ethics when confronted with a dilemma, is fascinating and well told. This is a work of fiction so it’s not necessary that the process of rendering a Supreme Court be completely accurate; It is still a page turner.

The suspense factor seems predictable (“Seems,” madam? Nay, . . . I know not “seems.”), yet there are times, many times, when the reader will begin to doubt that predictability. Mostly we are not sure about how the book will end, and even if one element works out, the other elements probably will not—or so it seems.

This Advance Reader’s Copy of this book was sent me by the author in exchange for an honest review. I can honestly say that I will be first in line to buy Ronald S. Barak’s next book.

Highly recommended!

My only problems were:
1) finding it after I downloaded it from Instafreebie. Amazon listed it as follows in my “Docs” list:
Title: Unknown
Author: Owner.

Several books from Instafreebie were listed similarly; some listed the author as the same person who wrote the previous Instafreebie download; some listed this reviwer as the author; In some cases both Title and Author were blank—it took much trial and error to find it.

2) It would have been helpful if the book had been scored for Amazon’s X-Ray. Most of us nowadays aren’t able to sit down and read a book in one sitting. I know I can’t, and I’ve been retired for almost 30 years: theoretically able to sit down and read until I die or go blind. Life just doesn’t work that way.

That means when a character is mentioned that was mentioned only once before, perhaps 100 pages earlier, we don’t remember who he is or how he is a necessary part of the plot. X-Ray could easily solve this admittedly minor inconvenience.

This was my first book by author Ron Barak and all I can say is “Why didn’t I find out about him sooner”. I love thriller/mystery books but add in all the legal stuff and courtroom drama and I’m hooked. The author was so great at explaining what was going on in the Supreme Court that I believe I learned a little bit as well. He’s writing was great and had you jumping back and forth between different characters and scenes. The characters were all well written, each with such different personalities. After reading the book, I took a pause and said “yep this really could happen”.

The story is about the fate of the 28th Amendment with a group who wants it gone so files suit with the Supreme Court. One of the highly respected Judges, Arnold Hirschfeld, gets a text message staying they have is granddaughter and wants to make sure the Judge votes the kidnappers way. The story goes through a lot of drama of the poor 11 year old girl who also unfortunately has diabetics. I think she is the hero of the story on how calm she stayed during the entire time she was kidnapped. A retired district court judge also starts to wonder why Judge Hirschfeld is saying things different that what he thinks he should be saying during the proceedings and begins to suspect something was up. So along the way Detective Frank Lotello is asked to find out what was happening. During the entire book, people were starting to wonder why Judge Hirschfeld is acting the way he was but no one was to know what really was happening in his family. The story goes on between the kidnapper, the Judge, the POTUS, the newscaster women and a few others. It is so well written and I think true to life that you start to think this really could happen.

Bottom line for me is this is not the only book I’m going to read by author Ron Barak. Look out John Grishman, Mr. Barak is great!

There is a lot of potential in the story. But after 20 chapters, I'm unconvinced that this author is willing or able to reach it. This seems like a promotional vehicle for the author's twenty-eighth amendment to the constitution. In the first fifth of the book, we get multiple passages from characters supporting the amendment, and nothing nearly equivalent from the other side of the issue. After this long, if he's going to go into THAT much detail about the characters' political beliefs, then we should be seeing at least one opponent get a chance to lay out their political belief in similar detail and eloquence.

On top of that, there are ridiculous errors or inventions that seem to be the result of sloppy or inadequate research. I can accept some creative license for the sake of a story, but this doesn't seem like that. If the Supreme Court allows cameras in its courtroom, it is not going to do it by giving any network exclusive rights. On a case this sensational, there are going to be ridiculous line-ups for the public gallery. And presumably the afternoon session will be filled with people who were waiting in line before the morning session adjourned! No way are you going to be able to get seated for both.

On top of that, the author has yet to reveal any character I feel any feeling for whatsoever, with the sole exception of the justice's granddaughter (and given her circumstances, she doesn't have any ability to change her situation currently).

The bones of the story seem to be there: a Supreme Court justice blackmailed over his granddaughter's life. But… this author seems to be more interested in spewing right-wing talking points than telling that story. Maybe it gets better after the first twenty chapters, but I've yet to see any sign of it. Leaving this audiobook unfinished.

The potential 28th Amendment is a proposed rule that would change the responsibilities of the congressional members and more. The amendment has not followed the normal course to be elected and the hearing has become a televised event. But some powerful people don’t want this amendment to pass and they are willing to do whatever it takes to stop it.

Justice Arnold Hirschfeld gets the message that his granddaughter has been kidnapped and that he won’t get her back unless he follows instructions. This becomes a race against time both is nullifying the amendment but also for Cassie. Cassie is a diabetic and has had her insulin pump removed and only a little insulin on hand.

I will be the first to admit that I shy away from anything legal or political, especially because of our current political situation. But this story could easily be one in our news today. Of course there is the controversy of the 28th Amendment with how it is being voted on and what it will cover. Of course you have people on both sides that have strong feeling about this amendment.

Of course there are those that are willing to kill to get what they want. Mixed in the hearing is the story of Cassie, a young girl with aspirations to be a tennis star and has diabetes that normally would be controlled. It becomes a race against time to get her rescued before that causes more complications.

This is an amazing thriller that will appeal to anyone. Although the topic is not my normal read I am so glad that I got the chance to listen to the story. But that could also be because Chris Andrew Ciulla does a fantastic job narrating this book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

The Amendment Killer - There's pages of advanced previews before the reader even gets to the table of contents, not something I care about reading. I was glad to see the Epigraphs, which I have always found these interesting. The author takes care to introduce history of The Constitution and The Amendments, which I'm not even sure is being taught in our schools anymore. Mr. Barak shares information, not only to make the story flow smoothly, on a variety of subjects that helps the uninformed reader understand what they are reading.

This is a well written, intriguing, fast paced, substantial book. It keeps the reader's attention until the end, making it hard to put the book down, even for another cup of coffee. This is my type of book, and I found it thoroughly enjoyable, mesmerizing and truthful. The characters run the gamut on characteristic traits, some more developed than others; and their actions and emotions involves the reader, provoking a gamut of responses to the story. The twisting plot never loses the reader's attention. If you remember the first time you saw Die Hard in the theater and how you verbally reacted throughout the movie, you understand what I'm trying to explain. Or for the younger crowd, The Shooter or The Accountant.

The author's writing style and presentation makes him an author of future interest. If you like Grisham, De Mille, Baldacci and company, you'll like this author just as much as I do. I recommend this book and author highly. 5*

The Supreme Court of the United States is considered one of America’s most sacred institutions. But what happens when the sanctity of the Court is put in jeopardy? The Court is about to hear a bellwether case: can the Constitution be amended solely by citizens or must Congress be involved? Shortly before oral arguments begin, Justice Arnold Hirschfeld receives a text message, informing him that his granddaughter has been kidnapped, her fate resting on the High Court striking down the 28th Amendment passed through the efforts of a citizens’ advocacy group. Hirschfield’s friend, Cyrus Brooks and the lead attorney for the respondents, notices his odd behavior during arguments and engages the help of a D. C. detective to get to the bottom of this mystery. With time running out for his granddaughter, Hirschfeld must decide how to save his granddaughter without compromising the very principles on which America was founded.

The Amendment Killer by Ronald S. Barak, is a novel with a plot that is very relevant to Americans in light of the current political climate here in 2018, with citizens pushing for change on a variety of issues. The Constitution has been interpreted in multiple ways during the history of America and this novel points out yet another portion of it that may not be as straight-forward as we thought. The content of the novel’s fictitious 28th Amendment, around which much of the plot centers, addresses contemporary issues that are even now being hotly debated. Barak has drawn from his legal background in order to compose a novel that is both though-provoking as well as thrilling. This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while, which is why I give it 5/5 stars.

*An ebook copy of this novel is the only consideration given in exchange for this review.*

A Constitutional Thriller

I received a request to read and review this novel. Having accepted similar requests, I was pleasantly surprised to discover The Amendment Killer is an excellent novel.

A good novel does not violate the laws of chemistry, physics or logic; the author writes about what he or she knows or finds an expert to vet the work and make sure it is factual; and the story educates the reader. The Amendment Killer meets all of these criteria and is an intriguing well-written story.

Actually the story has two components: Constitutional arguments before the Supreme Court and the kidnapping of an eleven-year-old girl. I was fascinated by the legal arguments and description of how the Supreme Court functions. Article V of the Constitution provides the procedures for amending the Constitution—but what does it really say. Ah, this is the foundation of this novel.

A citizens group, NoPoli, convenes a Constitutional Convention and passes the 28th Amendment, but is such a convention Constitutional according to Article V? The House sues to declare the amendment unconstitutional and the Supreme Court must decide. After reading Article V several times I find the arguments presented both thought provoking and realistic. And the kidnapping element of the story is also well done.

I really enjoyed this story however, let’s talk about what I didn’t like first.
IMO the 11 years old girls were portrayed as being much older. I can understand somewhat especially the girl with diabetes and golf experience and how she may have been forced into maturity at a young age, and I understand that some kids are geniuses, more mature or naturally more intuitive however none of that was really pointed out. It was hard for me believe that so just imagined the girls at 13-14 and it worked for me. The one other thing I didn’t care for was the courtroom jargon. I love a good a good courtroom battle, in fact that’s one of my favorite things about these books but much of what was discussed went over my head. Whew, now that I got that over with, here’s what I loved.
I loved the overall storyline and how the kidnapper & Judge communicated back and forth. I also loved how Brooks and Lotello got back together. The banter between them is so much fun. Very entertaining story.
This is book 1 with an HEA, however, there is a prequel called The Puppet Master which I highly recommend reading first.
I recommend this book/series!

The Amendment Killer by Ronald S. Barak is one of the best books that I have read this year. It is especially timely and appropriate for the contemporary political environment in the United States. The book grabs you by the heart and mind from the chilling opening line and maintains that grip through a roller coaster ride to a satisfying conclusion. The Amendment Killer is a unique chimera consisting of political and psychological intrigue, legal, Constitutional and medical wonkishness, crime drama, action thriller, and a masterful study of human relationships. The characters are well developed and believable. As the father of two spunky, independent, athletic and intelligent daughters, I really loved Cassie since I saw traits of my daughters in her. The character development of Thomas over the course of the book was superbly written. The Amendment Killer is both a fun read and more importantly, a book that really makes the reader think. I rate it at 5 stars only because I can’t rate it any higher! Read it! You won’t be disappointed.

The Amendment Killer by Ronald S. Barak is an intense political thriller from start to finish. The author deftly weaves a tale with a kidnapping in which the ransom is much more than money...it's the outcome of a Supreme Court decision. I really enjoyed the way the book was set up. Mr. Barak does an incredible job of explaining the ins and outs of a Supreme Court case, along with all of the 'legalese', while still making it an easy-to-read and enjoy story. The Amendment Killer had me on the edge of my seat...and up past my bedtime to finish the last part because I had to know how the story played out.

This isn't a genre I read in very often, but I absolutely loved it and had a hard time putting it down. I'm looking forward to reading the prequel to this book as well as more from Mr. Barak.

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily sharing my honest review. My review is not influenced in any way. This review will appear on Brooke Blogs.
