A professional job turns personal for jet-setting contract killer Gideon in this sexy, thrilling page-turner by New York Times bestselling author Eric Jerome Dickey.
As a hit man from the time he was very young, money, women, and danger have always ruled Gideon’s life; but for the first time, the job is taking its toll. Neither Gideon nor the city of Buenos Aires has recovered from the mayhem caused during Gideon’s last job. But before the dust has settled and the bodies have been buried, Gideon calls in backup—including the lovely Hawks, with whom Gideon has heated memories—to launch his biggest act of revenge yet...one he believes will destroy his adversary, Midnight, once and for all.
Yet Midnight and his second-in-command, the beautiful and ruthless Señorita Raven, are launching their own revenge, assembling a team of mercenaries the likes of which the world has never seen… and Gideon isn’t their only target. Gideon will need all of his skills if he is to save not only his team, but his family as well.
Dickey’s new novel stirs up a whirlwind of sex and violence that spans the globe...and leaves no moral boundary uncrossed.
Eric Jerome Dickey was born in Memphis, Tennessee and attended the University of Memphis (the former Memphis State), where he earned his degree in Computer System Technology. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in engineering.
After landing a job in the aerospace industry as a software developer, Eric Jerome Dickey's artistic talents surfaced, inspiring him to become an actor and a stand-up comedian. Yet Eric quickly found out that writing was something he could do and do well. From creative writing classes to avidly consuming the works of his favorite authors, Eric Jerome Dickey began to shape a writing career of his own. Having written several scripts for his personal comedy act, he started writing poetry and short stories. "The film work gave me insight into character development, the acting classes helped me understand motivation...All of it goes hand in hand," Eric explains. He joined the IBWA (International Black Writers and Artists), participated in their development workshops, and became a recipient of the IBWA SEED Scholarship to attend UCLA's Creative Writing classes. In 1994 his first published short story, "Thirteen," appeared in the IBWA's River Crossing: Voices of the Diaspora-An Anthology of the International Black Experience. A second short story, "Days Gone By," was published in the magazine A Place to Enter.
With those successes behind him, Eric Jerome Dickey decided to fine-tune some of his earlier work and developed a screenplay called "Cappuccino." "Cappuccino" was directed and produced by Craig Ross, Jr. and appeared in coffee houses around the Los Angeles area. In February 1998, "Cappuccino" made its local debut during the Pan African Film Festival at the Magic Johnson Theater in Los Angeles.
Short stories, though, didn't seem to fulfill Eric Jerome Dickey's creative yearnings. Eric says, "I'd set out to do a ten-page story and it would go on for three hundred pages." So Eric kept writing and reading and sending out query letters for his novels for almost three years until he finally got an agent. "Then a door opened," Eric says. "And I put my foot in before they could close it." And that door has remained opened, as Eric Jerome Dickey's novels have placed him on the map as one of the best writers of contemporary urban fiction.
Eric Jerome Dickey's book signing tours for Sister, Sister; Friends and Lovers; Milk in My Coffee; Cheaters; and Liar's Game took him from coast to coast and helped propel each of these novels to #1 on the "Blackboard Bestsellers List." Cheaters was named "Blackboard Book of the Year" in 2000. In June 2000, Eric Jerome Dickey celebrated the French publication of Milk in My Coffee (Cafe Noisette) by embarking on a book tour to Paris. Soon after, Milk in My Coffee became a bestseller in France. Eric Jerome Dickey's novels, Chasing Destiny, Liar's Game, Between Lovers, Thieves' Paradise, The Other Woman, Drive Me Crazy, Genevieve, Naughty or Nice, Sleeping with Strangers, Waking with Enemies, and Pleasure have all earned him the success of a spot on The New York Times bestseller list. Liar's Game, Thieves' Paradise, The Other Woman, and Genevieve have also given Dickey the added distinction of being nominated for an NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Literary Work in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005. In 2006, he was honored with the awards for Best Contemporary Fiction and Author of the Year (Male) at the 2006 African American Literary Award Show. In 2008, Eric was nominated for Storyteller of the Year at the 1st annual ESSENCE Literary Awards. In January 2001, Eric Jerome Dickey was a contributor to New American Library's anthology Got To Be Real: Four Original Love Stories, also a Blackboard Bestseller. He also had a story entitled “Fish Sanwich” appear in the anthology Mothers and Sons. In June 2002, Dickey contributed to Black Silk: A Collection of African American Erotica (Warner Books) as well as to Riots Beneath the Baobab (published by Inte
Gideon is an assassin from humble beginnings, originally the son of a prostitute. While he tries to unwind from his last job, Gideon is being hunted by Midnight, his father, whom he tried to kill unsuccessfully. The book alternates between their two story lines and is intertwined with the many side characters that get caught up with them due to their ties in international politics. Personally didn't enjoy the book very much because while the writing wasn't bad it felt rough because of the pacing and the way that transitions were made from one scene to the next. The book was heavier on the action side of things especially with the sex and violence, and there's nothing wrong with that it's just not something that pulls me into a book. Midnight was such a dick head also and the way the prostitutes were treated kept making me want to stop reading. I couldn't get into the twist at the end either it felt a little bit like one of those twists on a TV show where they start to get more and more out of control in terms of credibility. This books is geared more towards people who like spy and action books or movies and enjoy the gratuitous violence and sex. If you want something fast paced and exciting then maybe you'll like this one. This just really really wasn't for me and I had to force myself to get through it.
Something about EJD's usually highly engrossing novels has changed. Perhaps it is my literary depth or lack thereof that has changed but something simply in his once amazing stories simply stopped being. This was the case, and my experience, with Finding Gideon.
Initially, Finding Gideon motioned along like an unnavigated roller coaster. It was dysfunctional for far too long before the gears shifted. I began to feel discouraged, frustrated at another book that felt, for a while, like swallowing sandpaper. I thought to retire this read and begin another, but as the story progressed and the characters gelled, the leaps and rocketing globe-trotting characters and storyline became relatively more bearable. This is a thunderously lyrical book for an avid EJD fan, which I am, just maybe not as much.
As aforementioned, the change in EJD's highly lauded literary artistry over the last several years did me in, and that's too bad. ADVICE: Read all previously released Gideon books in the series, IN ORDER, otherwise Finding Gideon becomes little more than a few thousand words with occasional aha moments! I hope he returns to the complex simplicity of the earlier books in the series. In fact, I look forward to it!
Have you ever been so excited to read, watch or eat something and the anticipation was killing you? That's how I felt waiting for this book to happen. Just like everyone else, I couldn't wait for another adventure with Gideon. Then the day happens, you get what you've been waiting for, and then it falls short of your expectations. You stop for a minute and think "something is wrong with me, why didn't I love it," and you're beside yourself.
Finding Gideon wasn't a "bad" book by any sense of the word. It's Eric Jerome Dickey for goodness sake. And, he's still one of my most favorite authors but there was just a lot going on and it didn't hold my attention like I thought it would. Finding Gideon had a colorful cast of characters, tons of action, and I'm sure EJD's most loyal readers will love it!
Eric Jerome Dickey is back with his newest release Finding Gideon, which came out on April 18th, published by Dutton. I’m sure if you’re a fan of Eric Jerome Dickey’s Gideon series you’ll be happy about this new release focusing on Gideon. Having not read any of the Gideon series I was afraid that I would be a little lost trying to follow the story of Finding Gideon. https://browngirlreading.com/2017/05/...
1. Aside the main ARC involving Gideon and Medianoche(Midnight), there were many many many many MANY side characters. All who were described, given backstories, and sometimes had their own POV. This cluttered the story.
2.There were many expressions, most in Spanish, that I had to keep translating or looking up because I didn't get them. This soured & slowed down my reading experience.
3.The writing was a bit choppy, sometimes repetitive , and didn't flow as smoothly as it could have. The arrangements of POVs and events also needed some work. It got topsy turvy at times and got one confused till the point of the chapter or event was revealed. It also tended to be overly descriptive of scenes, time, people and places.
With that out of the way, the story was action-packed and even through the overly packed pages, it was nicely paced. The characters were ruthless in all they did, never held anything back and I must say I enjoyed the action immensely. Medianoche was evil-incarnate , with no scruples and no remorse whatsoever.Though Gideon was not a saint, he at least had a code he lived by.
Honestly, I think that the action saved the book for me. Had the action not been as good as it was, I would've gotten fed up and DNF'd the book before the 50% mark. by. All the characters were badasses. They might not all have been likeable but they all were badasses.
Also, I really liked how diverse the characters were. It had people from all over the world across religions and ethnicities. As someone who isn't usually represented in books I read, I enjoyed seeing someone like myself in a book. [Sidebar: It also mentioned "Asa" who is one of my all-time favourite singers so check her out if you don't know about her. She's awesome!!] :)
I think it is worth mentioning that this was not a romance. There wasn't a scrap of romance anywhere in this. I don't even know why it was tagged as such. The characters slept with who they wanted to, when they wanted to. They neither had, nor formed any emotional attachments to anyone aside their work groups or families.
Finally, Gideon's mother deserves a special mention for being the worst friggin mother in this entire universe. After destroying one child's life, she just went on and casually traumatized two more lives. What a character! Many times while reading, I wanted to reach into the book and punch her in the face. Several times. For long periods. Ugh.
I sense there is more in store for Gideon, his mother, the lady from Uruguay, the arms dealer from London, Arizona and her sister among others.I might pick up that book if it comes out just to see where he ends up.
I just might. I've still not decided yet.

Gideon, a hard-hearted hit man and lover extraordinaire, finds himself in an uncomfortable rivalry war when he cannot say no to the woman who haunts his heart. There is much damage on both sides, and there is a personal revengeful element that will lead Gideon to become more introspective than in previous books. But the other side, knows how to mess with his head leading Gideon to ponder what type of monster he has become but also opening his eyes to the trail of broken hearts he abandoned in the call of business.
As expected, the fast-paced storyline is filled with scary twists, violent encounters, and tantalizing intimate moments. One of the aspects that I enjoy in this series, is the author’s amazing description of the landscapes as the characters romp through North and South America.
This is the fifth book in the Gideon series, after a hiatus, but the author reminds the reader who the cast of characters are and what they mean to Gideon.
This is an edgy turn-pager that answered questions that have puzzled me in the past but to the author’s credit has now provided another cliff-hanger ending that I did not see coming. I hope the wait for the next Gideon will be a short one!
Finding Gideon ranks high on my list of the best books of 2017. Yes, it is only May, but this tale is amazing. Since its inception, I have enjoyed the Gideon series. The books are darker, fast-paced and filled with action. I can even accept Dickey's ridiculous over-written sex scenes when Gideon is involved. I was anxious to read this title, but worried that I would not remember plot details from the previous story. The way my reading schedule is set up, I didn't have time to go back and read the last book again. There was no need to worry. Dickey picks up the story immediately where the last one left off and he provides backstory so that fans don't have to go back and reread Resurrecting Midnight.
Among many, there were two things that really stood out about the book. The book is narrated by Gideon and Medianoche, which is awesome. The reader is able to get in the mind of both characters. I rooted for Gideon, but I certainly did not dislike Medianoche's character. The only character that I didn't like was Raven and that leads me to the second point that I fully enjoyed. The women in this series are just as bad ass if not more than the men. These are not weak willed women waiting to be saved. They are all strong, independent and don't shy away from a fight. Arizona, Sierra, Raven, Hawks, Preacher, Lola Mack, etc are all depicted as strong. Yes, the majority of the female characters love Gideon, but they don't allow him to overshadow their greatness.
As per usual with Dickey, a few characters from previous books are mentioned or make a cameo appearance. Sadly, a beloved character perishes in the midst of all of the fighting. I hope readers won't have to wait years for the next book in this series.
Overall, this a fantastic read.

Dickey weaved in many characters from Gideon's past and a few new bad asses into this novel. The Gideon series is my favorite series. So for me I simply got it. I would have finished the book in two days if I didn't have to eat, sleep, and work. If reading this book was or is your first time meeting the infamous Gideon, than I can see how following the novel's many POVs can be difficult. I truly enjoyed it from start to finish. I believe if you finish it you will not be disappointed. I am already looking forward to the next Gideon novel especially since MX-401 aka Reaper from A Wanted Woman contacted Gideon.

Fast-paced and full of action, I had a hard time putting this book down. Gideon was at war with his believed-to-be father Medianoche (this is still up for debate) and both had their own teammates to help them end the other. As the body count rose, I wondered which of these men would come out on top.
I enjoyed the quick looks into different heads, with the main focus being on Gideon and Medianoche. I thought it added life to the cast and while they were still bad people, it humanized them more than they would have been otherwise and I appreciated that. It also made the large cast feel more meaningful rather than just bodies that were going to drop (not all of them drop).
Gideon was the point of view I enjoyed the most. He was more tame than the others and experienced guilt, regret, and a yearning for the truth. He cared about his family and was loyal. Pretty good for a hitman.
Overall, definitely a thrilling read. I wouldn't say it's sexy. While I can appreciate that Gideon returned the pleasure he received with the multitude of women he was with, there wasn't love, or even seduction. It was sex to feel good, to forget, to relax. Not exactly a shining example of what a square is looking for.
Ever so often I take the time to read from more experienced authors, not just to kill time and be entertained, but also to hear different voices and see things from a different point of view. What I've always enjoyed about Eric Jerome Dickey is that he has a poetic way of describing his scenes and the thoughts of his characters. As for the story, it was a good cat and mouse tale as Gideon appears to finally learn the identity of his father, or does he? I recommend that you do not begin with this novel, but start from the first book in the series or else you may end up getting lost with the numerous characters. The ending answers many questions, but the reader will be left with a few new ones--which was clearly done to let us know that Gideon will be back.
3.5 Stars. Erotica, violence, and profanity. Wild crazy characters. Location, location, location. Culture. Language. Backstory. Suspense. Adventure. Some repetition. Too many characters for my taste, but each and every one was interesting (he gave them all a history).
If you are a fan of the Gideon series, you will really like this book. If you are not, you might be inclined to DNF. This is a standalone novel, but it would really help if you have read the other books in the series. Although I still favor his earlier work over this series, there's no denying Eric is a great writer. The amount of research he puts into his novels is commendable. You can tell he's visited (many of, if not all of) the places he's described in this book. His attention to detail and his imagery lend to the strength of this work.
I am glad I listened to it instead of trying to read it. The narrator kept me interested.
I waited a long time for this book, I wish there were more answers with it but I feel like I have more questions than I started out with. ' Oh and I can't believe he left us with ANOTHER cliffhanger!!! I just hope it won't be another 8 years to finally find out what happened.
Eric Jerome Dickey is a master at his trade. I tried to fall in love with Finding Gideon but... not sure what happened. Lots of characters and twists and turns. It was an effort to read. I would still read more of his work.
Gosh I just love Eric Jerome Dickey!! This is the latest book in the Gideon series and it is a real page turner for sure! So exciting and I hope he writes another!
I agree, EJD, Resurrecting Midnight and Finding Gideon felt like a series novel by itself. I totally enjoyed it. But damn, when one war ends, another war rises. I thought this was the end of Gideon when he went after the Horsemen solo. Didn't see that coming. But then again, there were some jump arounds that was a little confusing.
I thought Lola Mack and Ms. Jones were killed off by red-headed assassin when they were still in London? Did I miss something?
In Argentina, a son tries to kill his father. This is complicated by the fact they are both top drawer mercenary soldiers. There are plots and counterplots, and a lot of sleeping around.
I have enjoyed some of the other books in the Gideon series but it was hard to follow this storyline inbetween translations and the switching of the character narrative. And the grammar wasn't in the style that usually draws me in. I only live in hope that the next gets better after the cliff hanger I was left on.
When I learned that the Gideon series was making a much-anticipated comeback, I knew it would be "fiyah". And that it was. While the novel's focus was on Gideon's return/revenge... it was great to be reacquainted with all of my favorites in the series: Arizona, Medianoche, Scamz, Hawks, Thelma now Catherine... all of which were developed wonderfully.
Gideon is a TWIN!!! I cannot wait until the next installment. Is Catherine to be revealed as the boogeyman, finally?! Either way, very well written, relevant, and a page-turner.

My, my, my! I've been a EJD Fan since the first book, Sleeping with Strangers! I read the 1st and 2nd back to back the rest as they released, but 8 years EJD?? Why did you make us wait so long!? I'm sure just as many days as you thought about Gideon we thought twice, anticipating his arrival as did the Four Horseman! I have to say honestly that it took me longer to jump in than any of the other books in the series (or his work period) but once I got through I could not put it down! A couple things I love about the Gideon series: the real life past and present references he makes throughout the series, vivid description of emotions, and POV. From the first book Gideon has wrestled with his identity being the son a whore and merce. Those of us who have read the entire series have watched him grow and fight this hurdle until it eventually consumed his world. The cadence leading up to the final battle was pearl clutching! I had to close my book several times, shocked! I especially adored how he rolled previous characters in, as he summed up he paid homage. EJD has a unique way of tying all pieces of his work together without it being overwhelming, i.e. Nina Simone Bijou.
I am what they might call a 'philomath' so the moments that I came across where I had to look up something it made the story more interesting to me! I discovered a couple places in which there is potential for a spin off series based on other characters (Arizona & Sierra) or another book in the Gideon series... I just hope we don't have to wait 8 more years.
Another Gideon novel for the franchise that hints at future books to follow. I enjoyed the story because it was well written and contained the right combination of action with character development. I always chuckle to myself while reading EJD because he expects so much from his readers. As a reader of his books you have to speak more than one language and remember various details from the entire series (not just one or two books but the ENTIRE series). EJD was able to include every title of the series in the book and highlights from each previous book. At certain points the story screams 'made for tv' but sadly the idea of a league of minority assassins would not get Hollywood buy-in. I think this is a fun fast paced action along the lines of Jason Borne.
This book just didnt do it for me. Ive been an EJD fan a while and i liked his last book the blackbirds but i feel as if..idk if ive outgrown this series or its just not written well.
Most of the time I really just wanted to wrap this book up.. It took forever. i know this seems crazy to say about a book but wayyyyyy too many details and descriptions. I mean the reader could have gotten the picture with out literally every right hand turn made in buenos aires. including what was on all four corners and what each of the buildings looked like ..it was like come on.
Another weary part. Its been so long since this series started I truly dont remember it and Im not the type to go re read just to read one book. That would have been four books i had to read. too much time passed. This book really made me feel like I wish this series would end already so I can just know the outcome. Just when you think you are getting to an end ...nope more lies from frenchwoman and a clear set up for yet another novel. I mean its been so long I honestly thought "thelma" was dead when i first start reading. I was like didnt she die in a prior book? i was wrong but goes back to point of draggin this out.
Idk i really enjoyed Gideon as a character and still liked him in this book but again something off i just wasnt into it. I think another aspect of being dragged out and too many descriptions is that now there are so many books and so many people i couldnt remember where someone fit in previously. Like how old are "the boys"? young enough to still be taken care of, but can also handle guns but still want to go skating and for ice cream? huh? I have no concrete memories of Hawks or Arizona from prior books its just been too long. then shotgun? the bajan? his past trist mention and show up lola mack.. it really jsut got to be too much for me. and i wont even start on the newly recruited horseman I honestly didnt know who was who except preacher, savage and shrapnel face girl ..
I cant recommend this book unless you have already read the series and just want to continue, or if you want to start a series and just add this as a part, ill be reading the next book to see what happens but im sure in another 2-5 years when that drops ill have forgotten this book as well
I was asked by the publisher for an honest review.

So I didn't realize that this was a series! This was my first Gideon book and I must say I really enjoyed it. I am going to go buy book 1 so I can start at the beginning! I enjoyed all the action in this book. I'm not usually big on a lot of action in my books but I must say that this book has changed my mind! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a all around Good Book!
Thank you for finally releasing the next installment of the Gideon series. Oh, how I longed for him so. My passion to see this character come back to life equalled that of Miss Jones and Miss Mack. Well, in this book Gideon is thrust head on facing the demons that haunt him daily and the ones lurking to assassinate him at any given moment. How will he conquer and overcome them ?? Well you have to read and find out. As always, Mr. Dickey takes the reader on an action packed adventure with Buenos Aires as the backdrop. It is there, Gideon will face his toughest battle as his mind and body are rattled to the core and riddled with needing to solve who is he?? Let's not forget, the infamous Midnight is looking to finish this war that Gideon has begun. With these elements intertwined makes for a read that will definitely not disappoint. Thank you Mr Dickey for the history lessons on Buenos Aires and the political stances do not go unnoticed. I can't wait for next Gideon book because all the lies are not fully unearthed.
A really good book, all filled with assasins, mercenaries and sex, what more could you want. Lots of intrigue and fast paced action.. The characters that make up this book is amazing.. a very good read.
I was so excited to see that Gideon is back!! I read this newest installment with wonder, amazement, fear, tears, urges, and panic. EJD has done it again and I hope the story will continue to continue!! Great to have the old favorites back and another mystery to solve!
I was on page 84 of this book when I decided to read the reviews.....Although I love Erica Jerome Dickeys previous works, I don't do "cliffhanger" and "continuation" type books because they always make me feel "ganked" and unsatisfied. So I cannot fairly rate this book since I will not finish it.
