Johnson, Kristin Enough to Go Around: A Story of Generosity. PICTURE BOOK. Millbrook (Lerner), 2018. $20. 9781512486483

This is about a boy named Michael who finds out that not everyone has the same access to enough food that he does. He decides he wants to help and has an idea for a food drive, and leads the charge at his school. Features large color illustrations.

I like this book because its proactive –a student see’s a problem and finds a way to solve it. But not all schools can do food drives –some of the schools are the ones that need food drives done for them. If your school does an annual food drive, this would be a great way to introduce the concept to younger grades. I would have preferred a more generic book about everyday ways to show generosity.

This story is about a young boy named Kevin. He recognizes that a friend is in need and wants to find a way to help. Kevin learns what it means to be generous and the rewarding feeling that it offers. Kevin organizes a food drive to help his friend because he found out his friend doesn’t get enough to eat at home. He then finds out that many people go hungry and this is another reason he wants to hold the food drive.
All students can understand this concept and relate to the characters within it whether it is themselves or if it is people that they know. The story is simple but has a huge meaning to being generous and putting that into action. It is good to learn about being generous but it is more important to learn the actions that go with that and how to impact others around you by being generous. This story does just that and shows that you can make a difference in other people’s lives! This story is realistic fiction and is an easy read for 1st grade students to read on their own.
