The completed Colony collection is here, inspired by the present-day repercussions of an occult curse inflicted in revenge by a dying sorcerer...
The Colony
For over a century, the mystery of the New Hope Island vanishing has intrigued and tantalized. How did a community of 150 souls disappear and leave no trace behind?
As abruptly as the crew of the Mary Celeste, they went missing from their lonely Island in the Hebrides without a single clue as to the nature of their departure; doomed to remain an enigma forever.
…Until media magnate Alexander McIntyre decides to harness his prodigious energy and bottomless wealth in solving the New Hope mystery once and for all. He gathers a crack team of experts, sparing no expense in his pursuit of answers.
What they discover is as terrifying as it is inexplicable… Are some mysteries safer left unsolved?
Dark Resurrection
Five years after a tragic expedition put New Hope Island back in the headlines, past-his-prime crime author Dennis Thorpe leads a writers retreat to that secluded corner of the Hebrides… The group is never seen again.
Ruthie Gillespie, the beautiful, heavily-tattooed, hard-drinking author of dark tales for children, was supposed to be among their number but something stopped her at the eleventh hour, and it isn’t long before the police come knocking. Ruthie falls deeper and deeper into a web of dark magic and darker secrets as it becomes clear that the writers’ pasts are not what they seem.
How far can you take an investigation when your own life is threatened? Do you continue, knowing that you must find the answers before the Island claims another victim? Or do you run and hope that it never catches up with you?
Harvest of Scorn
Felix Baxter, entrepreneur extraordinaire, is going to rehabilitate New Hope Island. Rich and manipulative, he wants to convert it into a glamorous getaway destination, ‘The New Hope Experience’. But will the restless ghosts of Seamus Ballantyne’s 1825 colony allow the project to go to plan?
Helena Davenport has an opportunity that could be pivotal in her career as an architect – Felix Baxter has commissioned her to oversee his New Hope vision. But nothing is as it seems in this mysterious part of the Scottish Hebrides. Helena’s site manager is the first to go missing with one single, eerie scream.
Accompanied by the survivors of the last group to visit New Hope, Ruthie Gillespie must travel back to the island one final time to end this ordeal not only for those on the island, but for themselves too…
But is New Hope Island ever worth returning to? And will this concluding trip end a curse that has afflicted all who have had the misfortune to visit it for nearly two centuries?
Reading is a cheap and totally effective way of being transported to another world. The same is true of writing. Mundane concerns only afflict your characters if you decide you want them to. University was where I first thought seriously about fiction; hearing about Hemingway's iceberg theory and Eliot's objective correlative and having the luxury of time to ponder on the mechanics of the novel. My first writing was journalism and pieces for I-D, Arena and The Face brought me to the attention of mainstream magazine publishers. In the '90's I edited FHM when it still majored on sport and fashion rather than Hollyoaks starlets and weather girls. Then I launch-edited the UK edition of Men's Health magazine and then came to the conclusion that if I didn't try to write some fiction it was never going to happen. I read all kinds of fiction, but write stories with a paranormal element I think really because history fascinates me and ghosts allow the past to resonate shockingly, scarily and I hope convincingly, into the present. I got off to an encouraging start but have suffered a few disappointments since then. I wouldn't in honesty want to do anything else, though. If I write a terrible novel it's my fault entirely. If I write a good novel, it's entirely my achievement.
My first exposure to author, F.G. Cottam was through the first book in this series, The Colony. It was recommended to me by a Kindle algorithm (for which I am eternally grateful). Cottam is especially adept at creating a world the reader can immediately inhabit. The sense of place, the character development (including the environment), the supernatural elements - they all fit together so well. There is always an excellent sense of tension and movement in his stories. I adored this book. I have read everything this author has written. For me, it's the perfect mix of interesting premise, intriguing location, fantastic action, believable, complex, characters, and the right amount of supernatural wonder, menace, and exploration. I cannot recommend his books highly enough.
I have never read a trilogy/series like this before where each book is equally as well written as the first so that when you finish the final tale, you want to cry because you have become so involved in the story line with all the characters. This is one of the reasons that I enjoy Cottam's writing so much. It does help a bit that it is not the end for some characters as they do pop up in some of his other books. This trilogy is definitely worth reading & is one that I enjoy revisiting periodically.
Improves as it moves to the third book. Brilliant in the end.
The first book is overwritten, with much needed trimming and editing. The second rehashes much of the first. But it gets better. By the third, it is difficult not to enjoy the writing. This is poignant and skillful. Although, I'm not a fan of the final few pages; they seem unnecessary and detract from the overall enjoyment. This writer has enormous potential. A Stephen King in the making.
This series had me on a rollercoaster of emotions. The ghosts, the creature, the hauntingly sadness of RB...I went from anxious terror to actually crying at the end. Very well written it kept me interested all throughout the series, and I loved the characters.
I enjoyed these 3books very much. Well written and interesting I found it hard to put down. The plot was original and the characters well defined. I was sad when I finished wishing there was another book.
An enjoyable read with a wide variety of characters. I'm not sure which book was my favorite because each one was very similar. People visit a special island and bad things happen. The premise of the first book was very good but not every character was deeply fleshed out. A few characters carry over and they are obviously the backbone of the trilogy. The back story and history was interesting and heartbreaking too. One annoying thing for me (very minimal) was the incredible sense of smell for the characters. They could identify multiple scents with of the weirdest items immediately. Quite a talent. Overall a good read.
