I admire the author for his intention with this novel. The theme of every life is precious, we all count, and every action matters is an important one. I agree that we can all make a difference.
The depiction of mental illness and the way mentally ill people can be treated and viewed was excellent. The scenes of violence and suffering were written with great understanding.
Unfortunately, I felt that writing about the character of Bishop in a dreamlike hallucinatory manner, detracted from the important theme of this book. I know it was a deliberate style that the author chose, but it didn’t work for me.
Lots to like about this book, but it came across to me as a message wrapped in a story and I would have preferred a story with a message.
