This international thriller takes FBI Agent Annie Marino from Chicago to Michigan to Russia and back again.
In Chicago, a young woman is found dead. Her only identifying mark is a tattoo behind her ear... that of bloody bear claws. Several women have been found over the course of several years with that same tattoo. All the women have been suspected of being victims of a human trafficking operation.
Annie’s neighborhood friend, Jason Ward, is a young writer engaged to be married into an upper-class family from a posh Chicago suburb. Jason believes his future brother-in-law, a war veteran, is definitely a bully—but does he also have ties to the Russian mob?
Throw in a corrupt cop, some very powerful men, and a whole lot of lies and secrets and cover-ups and things can turn ugly ... and dangerous ....in a heartbeat.
This is a well-written, action-packed, fast-paced book with credible characters. The subject of human trafficking, especially for women who are forced into prostitution or more depraved activities is handled very well. However, there are graphic scenes that may not be palatable to everyone.

Topical fast paced thriller. Benson has created three strong characters in FBI SA Annie, Jason, and Yana. They come at the problem of trafficking from different places but work together effectively in the face of a powerful enterprise that is determined to keep its place. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. You might have read the basic plot line before but Benson has added some good twists.

Very intriguing thriller on human trafficking. FBI agent Annie Marino takes you on an inside look on how the FBI gathers, researches and finds the truth. And the small world of her Starbucks friend Jason; a sweet nice guy in how he is mixed up in the whole mess. Another great read by Raymond Benson; he always delivers.

Unless there’s a sequel (and I hope there is) this will probably be the only novel you’ll read about a tap-dancing FBI agent. Strong characters, a solid plot, good use of Chicago locales, plus a tip on Chicago’s best thin-crust pizza (Pat’s Pizzaria on Lincoln). Human trafficking is a crime underutilized by crime writers and one I’d like to see used more often—enough with the serial killers and vampires!

This was chosen by my MiL in our book club. It was hard to get into at first due to some extremely cheesy dialogue. However it was extremely easy to read through since it was plot driven. The only other complaint I have is that I had pretty much predicted the entire storyline by about 40% into the book. So the conflict resolution wasn’t that surprising to me at all.

This book was written in 2018, during the first Trump administration. Before the current situation with Epstein file release and general knowledge of his trafficking business,
and of current ICE raids. This detail is important in terms of where the FBI stood at that time, on trafficking and illegal immigration.
This is a standalone detective/FBI story. It was well written, very engaging, suspenseful, likeable characters. The only thing that stopped me giving 5 stars, was a point where the author gives an information dump, that would have been better spread out over several chapters.
I would read more by this author.

Dark and fascinating
This is one I couldn't put down. It grabs you from the beginning and never lets you go. Raymond takes you on a ride that you won't want to get off. And I loved the ending!

Ne sa qualcosa la protagonista Annie Marino che da diverso tempo indaga sulla tratta di donne bianche, usate come prostitute o vendute come schiave in America.
Chi c’è dietro? Come fare a sgominare questa rete di contrabbando e salvare le donne coinvolte?
Nel silenzio della notte è una storia reale, crudele e attuale. Ecco le sue tre armi vincenti. L’autore non ha bisogno di inventarsi una storia e i suoi intrighi per rendere reale e veritiero un thriller, la cronaca internazionale gli fornisce l’incipit sta a lui scrivere una trama che coinvolga, che spieghi gli intrighi e gli escamotage usati dai criminali, e le indagini delle autorità per rintracciarli, incastrarli e smantellare le organizzazioni criminali.
Raymond Benson riesce a descrivere in modo semplice la crudeltà, senza filtri per renderla più accettabile, non può farlo altrimenti dovrebbe scrivere un’altro libro e di un altro genere.
È interessante il modo diretto e semplice che utilizza per spiegare il modus operandi della rete criminale: adescare le donne con vane promesse, far credere loro di poter realizzare i propri sogni in un paese ricco lasciandosi alle spalle la propria vita di stenti, trasportarle di nascosto come oggetti e una volta arrivati a destinazione presentare il conto.L’autore non vuole con questo enfatizzare la debolezza delle donne, che sono facili vittime delle parole illusorie degli adescatori, ma bensì la malvagità e la mancanza di umanità di quest’ultimi, che facendo leva sul desiderio di voler realizzare un sogno, di non vivere in miseria, adescano le donne e le convincono a lasciare il loro paese per raggiungerne un altro, diventando così vittime dei loro carnefici.
Crudele? Tanto. Reale? Ancora di più.
Pensiamo che sia solo la trama di un romanzo? Ma leggendo e ascoltando le notizie di cronaca ci si rende conto che non lo è. Quanti immigrati in mare affollati nei barconi vengono salvati ogni giorno? Quante donne straniere finiscono sui marciapiedi a fare le prostitute o in mano a uomini d’affari che le rendono loro “schiave”?
Lo conosciamo il mondo perso in cui viviamo e a volte per non essere travolti dalla sua brutalità lo ignoriamo, facciamo finta che non esiste, che sia in un incubo solo per chi lo vive.Nel silenzio della notte è un thriller tutto al femminile. Sono evidenziati alcune caratteristiche del carattere delle donne. La loro vulnerabilità, la loro fresca ingenuità, la loro paura, la delusione, la debolezza, l’ottimismo, la tolleranza, la loro determinazione, il loro coraggio, e la loro voglia di vivere e vincere.
Elementi sapientemente mixati in due personaggi Yana e Annie, che si ritrovano a lottare la stessa battaglia, a vincere la stessa oscurità e a sollevare il velo del silenzio dei crimini che perdurano nell’oscurità della notte, investite di due ruoli diversi ma altrettanto importanti.
Yana è la vittima della rete criminale, che cade in un tranello con la speranza di realizzare il suo sogno americano. Ma che per quanto orribile siano le torture a cui è sottoposta, non si arrende. Subisce e diventa una leonessa, riuscendo a vedere la luce… una luce nuova, con una diversa consapevolezza delle persone e di sé stessa. Con una ferità nell’animo con cui convivere per il resto della vita.
Annie non smette di indagare e cercare tutte quelle donne che sono vittime dell’Orso, una caccia ad armi impari, in cui il suo essere donna la mette mille volte in pericolo in mondo in cui gli uomini si sentono gli unici padroni. Riuscire a sgominare l’organizzazione non significa eliminarla per sempre, ma salvare delle vite e continuare a lottare affinché altre donne non subiscano lo stesso terribile destino di Yana o Irina. Lotta che non cesserà mai e solo donne e uomini umili e umane potranno continuare a combattere.
Due donne che non si arrendano, che subiscono e che si arrabbiano non solo per le violenze subite ma soprattuto per il senso di impotenza davanti ad esse, due donne forti, coraggiose che affrontano la vita, due leonesse che insieme a tutte le donne del mondo sapranno sconfiggere gli Orsi che si imbatteranno nel loro cammino.
Un thriller che va sicuramente letto e compreso, per porsi delle domande ad alta voce che giacciono nel silenzio della notte, per vedere oltre la nebbia scura che avvolge gli occhi, che invita il lettore a vedere la realtà nella sua brutalità e a non ignorarla, mascherandola di ipocrisia affinché sia più accettabile.

Non è mai facile dare un giudizio ad un libro scritto da uno del calibro di Raymond Benson, ci si aspetta sempre tanto da chi nel settore è un autore affermato da anni. La sola certezza è che la maestria e la qualità elevatissima della narrazione sono percepibili anche tra le primissime righe del romanzo. Un crescendo continuo che non riesce a placarsi neanche nei momenti di cambio della narrazione, per sfociare poi nel più intenso finale che si potesse immaginare, da film subito! Infatti la storia di Annie, la poliziotta, si interseca con quella di Yana, una delle ragazze dell’Orso e non solo…
Immerso nella storia, il lettore comincerà ad avanzare delle ipotesi ed elaborare particolari teorie che nel corso del racconto verranno smentite o confermate. Il crescendo è costante, la tensione a volte tocca picchi acuti e l’attesa del plot twist diventa sempre più elettrizzante.
Inutile dire che i personaggi sono tutti tratteggiati con stupefacente maestria, anche gli intrecci tra le diverse storie dimostrano un profondo studio da parte dello scrittore per far sì che tutti i tasselli si incastrino alla perfezione.
