First, I would like to warn everyone that this review might contain spoilers! Please note, that in this review I am not attempting to be "mean" or "rude" just very very honest.

Now onto the review!

I would like to state that the summary of the book, makes the book sound a whole lot better than it is. Onto the writing, I am not quite sure how to explain this properly. Please forgive me, if it doesn't make much sense.

This book is much like going on a tour, only instead of the tour guide telling the story of each place he just points them out. "here is the Madson House...." um, ok? Why is this house special? "It just is ...cause of that girl who lived here and the things she did....."

There is not much of a build up, it is like reading a time line with a brief description per event. The characters do not have much depth. Some characters only seem to be there just to be there for one moment, and then poof you do not really see this character again until later.

Kate, seems to be treated like a "cinderella" character in the family. They never explain why her own biological mother would hate her. I kept waiting or hoping there was some reason, or even some explaination as to how the mother became such a bitch to her own daughter. Was she the product of an affair? I had more questions than answers after reading this.

Her brother and friends come and go. They are not really IN the story. One moment her friends like her and the next they are upset at her because she hasn't really been around (due to her "changing" into a vampire). This doesn't seem to bother her, she just keeps on chugging. I find this hard to believe, these friends have been the only real people in her life that have supported her and helped her. They remembered her birthday when her own family completely forgot. I can not imagine this ... putting myself in Kate's shoes I would try to make it up to them or try to explain what is happening. It would hurt me to remove them from my life when they have meant so much to me so far blah blah blah. She acts as if losing her friends, is like finally getting rid of this annoying person who keeps trying to be your friend.

I can sit here all day and give you example after example how this (so called) story lacks description. I will just give you one or two more examples, so you can kind of see what I mean.

The boy who turned her into a vampire, his name is Elijah. They barely interact, and after the third interaction he tells her he loves her. Just very matter of fact. He keeps disappearing, she keeps thinking about him. In the book it is because she wants answers to what world she entered .... when they interaction #7 she tells him she loves him. Which came as a complete shock to me .....because she never acted on it ... never thought about him in that regard.

Towards the end, she finds out why he keeps disappearing. *poof* Elijah: I will die .... if I do not do what my family wants .... but there is a phrophecy of a girl who is turned on the brink of death who can save me from this .... this is you ....you will have special powers
*poof* family shows up to take him away ......*poof* she suddenly has powers, that saves the day
*poof* they live happily ever after.

WHAT THE HELL?!?!
What I look for in a story, is a story than can draw me in. I can literally picture myself as the main character from how well it is written or described. I am not sure if this piece that was written was the author's first attempt. I just know that I am very hesitant to pick up anything else of hers.

I hope I am able to spare you wasting a few hours of your life from reading this.

Not much of a prophecy

Ummm I didn't really get this book. The synopsis wasn't how the story went. I felt sorry for her home life but I didn't produce any connection with E. She thought she was saving him from bullies, she had never met him just eye contact in cafeteria. Then he disappears after biting her. He briefly comes back doesn't answers her questions, leaves her again while struggling with her changes. Then shows up and says I didn't know you were changing then leaves again then springs a prophecy on her which is suppose to save him and that's it? They love each other? When did it happen?

This book was evidently not for people our age. This became clear very quickly when the romance scenes were actually hilarious or cringy as fuck. It was a free audiobook, hence why I listened to it. And it was indeed a mistake. This book was trying a little too hard to be Twilight… It failed miserably of course. The synopsis wasn’t even a correct description of this book. I’m sure a 13 year old Megan MIGHT have liked it… but a 21 year old Megan certainly didn’t.

I was definitely not the target audience for this novel. Too much teen angst and drama The heroine was just a bit too immature for me. For this reason, I'm not leaving a rating.

Um idk what I was expecting given that this was free book.
It’s giving Twilight fanfic 🤌🏻
Any story with vampires reminds me of twilight so ya.
I feel bad saying it was bad so let’s just say it was not good.
It was free though, that was the only upside.

Very much a YA novel. Teen girl falls for cute guy who happens to save her life by turning her into a vampire.
Fate says they are destined to be in love so she gives up everything for this guy she has spoken to about 4times.
Young love….what can we say

It was an okay book. I felt bad for Kate’s home life (her dad is a drunk and her mom is verbally abusive) and was happy she found a place with Elijah. However, the love story between them seemed super rushed, I wished it had more development.

I listened to the audio and really enjoyed it. Every single chapter left a cliff hanger. The romance was limited between Kate and Elijah but being heavily invested in the main character’s life, I wanted the best for her. I’m not sure if I’ll read the next books in the series but I’m glad I listened to the audio. The audio made enjoying the book a whole lot better.

I really enjoyed the first two books in the Survivor's series by this author (haven't read the 3rd yet but plan to), so thought I'd give this book a try. Wow, was I disappointed. First of all, the book was very short, and it felt like a quick weekend writing attempt to make a few bucks without much effort. Kate was immature and had clear anger management issues (where were the teachers when she was beating people up at school?) The insta-love was like whiplash and had me wondering if my kindle version was missing several chapters, and I felt nothing for the male lead. The only part I liked was the mom/sister bully plot because I love a good Cinderella story. The end was so rushed I felt the author said... "Oh crap, it's Sunday and I still need to do the laundry. Time to wrap this up as fast as possible." I have some of the author's other series in my TBR list, but not sure after this.

Kate Roswell awakens to an overcrowded and unpacked room on the morning of her seventeenth birthday. The disarray around her reflects the discontent already burdening her anxious stomach that morning. The hatred she feels aimed at her by her family means there'll be no tokens of appreciation or celebration for her. Any gifts she receives today will not come from those meant to love her. Her noncommittal failure to settle into her new room, a reflection of the wider sentiment of not wanting to be here with her family at all. A father with hungover red eyes, silence and a paper fixed firmly in front of him, he drinks away his own disillusion at his family life. A mother who'll lavish affection and gifts on her siblings whilst reserving only barbs for Kate.

Madison, a sister more than content with monopolising on the benefits of being unable to do no wrong and on the unjust comparisons, sharpening her claws to barbs like those of their mother. Max, a brother who rightly or otherwise, is too vested in his own avoidance of a similar plight to be able to offer more than a passing token toward the younger of his two sisters. No, the only appreciation she'll experience the morning of her birthday, is to be found in the company of her closest friends Dinah, Nicole and Amy. That is, if she can get to school before the inevitable tongue lashings ruin any chance of feeling some happiness at being another year older. One more closer to the hopeful ending of her penance, a currency Kate has no idea what it's payment is for?

Despite it all, Kate does have an instinctual feeling that she is somehow on the cusp of some greater change coming to her life. The surprise that would be spoken that morning could not have had greater impact than if it leapt from her mother's and proceeded to slap her face. Given the family's new residence in a more expensive neighbourhood, it is declared that Kate would be taking a gap year to clean houses with her mother; so that the family would be able to raise the necessary funds to permit Madison enrolling at the College which accepted her application earlier in the week. In predictable style, their mother baked a cake, which Kate was not permitted to partake in, to celebrate the acceptance letter. But no such cake weighs down the kitchen table this day, when one is rightly due. Kate got no such consideration as her mother put an end to her dreams of escaping during college.

Had not Kate's closest friends noticed the new boy Elijah's entrance into the canteen whilst they waited in line at lunch that day, subsequent events may never have taken place. Without their apparent drool at his brooding good looks pointing him out to her, Kate may not have noticed his disappearing act, which would lead to greater attention later that day. As things necessarily play out because of this one seemingly random event, the forecast to Kate's instincts in a change of life work to reveal themselves in stunning manner. This could even be taken back a further step, had she accepted the offered ride to school that day, a meager token brought on by her birthday, neither would she have faced the decision which would forever change her life. Whether her instincts were right, they flutter somewhat in his gaze when he first saw Kate. Kate, for her part, recollects being drawn in by his attention on her. Whilst Elijah will later relay his attraction it does not initially appear to be of equal strength. (Indeed, a temporary shift in character perspective would have added to the story.)

Regardless, her bravery and efforts later on the day of her seventeenth birthday will bring about the greatest change to ever influence her life. Whilst Kate's transition become frequently interrupted, making changes in not just this but also the many other aspects of her life harder to experience too, the fortitude gained from her suffering means she was ready to embrace the change. Elijah is hardly in complete fault, given the difficulties also shaping his choices, but it takes time and prophecy before he takes hold of his part too. Elijah seems to have needed an alternative pathway as much as the next person could, one that Kate shows she can fulfill. If the serendipitous couple can manage to negotiate their environments whilst still keeping their heads above water, then perhaps they'll both achieve what is necessary to move on in their lives, through the turning points facing them both.

In an almost prequel role, Before Dawn sets the framework for where this new series might go. Destiny, fate and prophecy shape the lives of two desperate people clinging to the need for change. One's path entering some of the earliest turning points in life, the other's coming at one of the final transition in theirs. Both are separately leading changes set to destroy the goodness in their souls, unless they can navigate them together. The greatest suffering both experience is brought about by those meant to hold and cherish unconditionally. Both being downtrodden by the ideals and desires of the two people in each of their lives who hold the keys to any futures. If the controlling parties should succeed then the recipients will fall. But if through their combined strength they should succeed, a brighter future might be brought to fruition; but it'll be one that's still fraught with danger.

A decidedly PG set of events could open the doorways to any number of readers, but the underlying coming of age involved in the plots will most likely see a young adult/teen pool of readers. Morgan Rice offers clear and concise tellings in her stories and shows through fantasy and fiction the sorts of questions facing life. Without any harshness to this storytelling it can be enjoyed by most. Whilst only a beginning the story is still complete, and the level of shock possible through the plots could go anywhere in the novels to come. Whether the plan is to hold off on elements that adult readers might come to expect from vampire storylines only time will tell. The storyline and characters have been laid out and exposed and this quick read was enjoyed and it entertained. Complexity has a groundwork for wherever it could go, but herein it is only hinted at; meaning any reader could give it a go. If accustomed to decidedly adult possibilities and these are what floats your boat then you might not rate it as high as other vampire novels you're typically use to reading. Stories don't inherently need to shock to intrigue, Morgan shows a capacity to do so without the usual gore and sensuality usually seen in the vampiric world. I'm going with 4 ☆☆☆☆, but I can see the potential for 5 in books to come!

It seemed like the YA romance paranormal I was after, and I got exactly what I thought it would be. Trashy, no development and overall disappointing.
The authors writing style was great, I loved how she made dialogue sound like real teens. The connection the protagonist had to her friends was refreshing, almost convincing she wasn’t the dull, angry white female lead stereotype.
I was wrong. She went from a likeable character to pathetic.
Some key takeaways;
- Copying the Twilight cafetería scene was PAINFUL to witness
- Having an abusive family doesn’t automatically mean ‘character development’
- How TF do they fall in such a deep love with each other after exchanging barely a few sentences. I cannot stress enough how ridiculous this was. She has a crush on a nice guy but that just dissolved when she meets someone that wants nothing to do with her at first? Seriously...
- Let’s not forget the ridiculously convenient prophecy that makes her ‘special’.
- The protagonist can random kill another person she’s just met in defence of her ‘love’ she barely knows, and show no remorse or reaction. Totally undermines any character integrity she had left, after threatening to kill multiple people of course.
Overall, the author appears to have the talent to write well, but no ability to tell a decent story.

Kurz & Knackig

This book was offered to be free through hoopla as a bonus reads so I jumped at the chance for a new vampire romance book! However, i think it should be clear that this book is a novel that is targeted at teenagers, it is young adult. As a twenty-something reader i found the characters underdeveloped, youthful but in ways that i found hard to reconcile that a reasonable person would react.

SPOILER
For example, when the main character, Kate decides shes in love with Elijha and would sacrifice her life for him, despite having almost no interactions with him i found it hard to be believable. I think its important to note i am not a big fan of the insta-love trope. Moreover, the so-called prophecy was vague, and seemed only to apply to their immediate situation which felt almost too convenient. Perhaps if i was a teenager the suspected targeted readers of this novel, i would be able to suspend reality a bit more than to apply reasoning onto a world of vampires, but alas i was unable.

Se não fosse em audiobook, eu não teria terminado esse livro.
É aquele tipo de história clichê e previsível. Tem tudo o que você espera.

First of all, I'd like to say that I was really excited for this book. And it outright disapointed me!!
The first half of it was fine. Not great, but fine. But the second half was just weird. :(
This is the weirdest romance I've ever read about. And the story develops so fast in the end. And completely out of nowhere. I'm sorry if this isn't making any sense to you, but it's just me trying to write a review without spoilers.
Long story short, I really don't recommend it. Although I did have fun reading it. Not because it was
funny, it was not. But because it didn't make any sense. I will not be continuing this series.
But, in the end of this book, there was the first chapter of the other vampire series this author wrote and I got so curious. So I will definitely try to read that one.
(For those of you who had read both books, is it just me or does the author have an MO?)

Ok. So a very bad rip off of Twighlight.
✅Ultra pale Handsome brooding boy
✅secret society/ rules that could lead to death
✅ boy at school moves from schools every few years

Kate has a bad relationship with her family - treated like garbage and verbally abused - the way they treat her is abominable

At school She sees a boy getting bullied and stands up for him
Next she gets seriously injured and gets turned into a vampire

Insta love with a guy she only had maybe 3 conversations with.

Writing was not very good nor was the story really developed.

Would not recommend - was a waste of time

Would I recommend?

No.

Ok, so the way the vampires were portrayed wasn’t terrible.
It was nice to have some divergence from the classic
‘I vAnT tO sUcK yOuR bLoOd’
And the
‘Ooo sparkly hot man. Turn me!🤤’
But the book just really wasn’t well written.

Nothing against the author specifically, because I’m currently reading another of her books and the calibre of writing is to a much higher standard, however the book just isn’t good.

The 2 stars are because I feel it was somewhat original and the main character seemed to have one cool friend. But the writing just didn’t hit the mark in this one.

If you want to read Morgan Rice, I would suggest the Shadowseer series.

Angsty good story. Kate is a seventeen year old struggling with being an outcast in her own family. Her mom is driven by appearances- perfect daughter - perfect home and Kate just doesn’t fit in. Kate is slightly curvy and so not into mom’s frilly pink outfits. Elijah is he cute new guy at school and of course Kate notices him. The cool gang of boys decide to beat Elijah up and without thinking Kate charges in to save him. Unfortunately for Kate thins take a dangerous turn there. Kate begins to change slowly but Elijah has his own problems with his vampire coven. Loved all the drama and family issues that play out.

This has got to be one of the worst books I have read - and I have read a lot of bad books. Plot bouncing all over the place, no character development, cliches everywhere, insta-love that was just bizarre and a Vampire law that makes no sense . The only reason why I even finished it was because I was texting a friend all the "OMG what is going on??" moments (there were far too many of them!). I would like the 4 hours of my life back.

Unfortunately this book fell short for me. I think it has great potential but the characters are a little 2 dimensional and the love story escalates so quickly that it feels very unbelievable.

It has a couple of interesting ideas with regards Vampire, mating and travelling through time and space which I think, if developed cleverly, will be great moments in future books.

I felt like it was drawing on Twilight and the Vampire diaries but there just wasn’t enough substance or back story for it to be comparable.

It’s fine if you’d like a quick and easy read.

feels like she rushed with the romance, everything else was very good, the angst between teens, the crushes, etc. I didn't like how there were new rules like the "breeding" and E's wife needing to kill K just cuz he turned her. they never really fell in love, it felt rushed as I said, and each time they hang out he vanishes and she's back in her room?? what??

I get that her dad hits them but breaking his arms? (omg crazy) but I do like how she defended herself against her mom.

Very short easy read, modern repeated story with vampires and covens. Gives off early 2000s author/Wattpad vibes when reading nothing super elaborate nor world building. Subtle cliff hanger ending -Overall plot seems very similar if not the same to Morgan Rices other book Turned. Will read the sequel when published but nothing too special.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a bit short but I enjoyed it anyways. I would give this book 5 stars and it was interesting the main character had an abusive family and she overtook them. The ending could have been elongated but I still enjoyed it. Hoping to read a book two event hough I cannot find it.

I received an ARC from the author and have chosen to review it. I really enjoyed this story it was an extremely easy book to read that just dragged you into its world and didn’t want to release you until you turned the last page. I really enjoyed getting to see the characters grow and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series.

Good read

As always Morgan Rice knows how to keep you turning the pages and leaves you on the edge of suspense so you just have to read the next book. It’s a different take on vampires but it will be interesting to see where the story goes.

I enjoyed this book and want to read more of Morgan Rice's books, even though I'm not really into vampires.

I liked how Kate changed from being human to something she didn't know she was. And how she used her powers over her father and mother instead of being bullied by them.
