This spy novel is set in Bulgaria and Washington D.C. Tension builds in the deadly intrigue between Russian and American spies. The humor is as surprising as the plot twists. Jessica’s character is defined by her jaw-dropping wit, her sense of fashion, her roots in the jazz scene, and her ability to do the dangerous work that needs to be done.
A delightful read with any number of page-turning moments, as Agent Jessica Winter, a sometimes blues singer, seeks a microfilm in Bulgaria, in the 1970s, with just the right amount of place description - the mountains, the hotels, restaurants, cars and dress. A place of beauty, amid desperate times.
Well written, which makes it a good read, with plenty of details about the Blues world, Bulgaria, Russian and American intelligence ... and plenty of insights into Jessica's mind and heart - her motives, her fears, her determination, her love of music, her loyalty to friends, her steely nerves, and those moments when her nerves of steel turn to wax.
Lots of twists to the plot ... enemies are sometimes friends, and sometimes friends are enemies, death comes all too easy, and so the game goes on.
Jessica Winter is a superb agent, having weathered many a storm, never "bloodied" in many years ... until now.
I was very impressed with this book. I wrote it 37 years ago and hadn't seen it since. I sent it out a couple of times, got encouragement but no takers, and threw it away. My husband found it and kept it through five moves and had it published for my eightieth birthday. To say it was a surprise is an understatement! I had loved Bulgaria and it was nice to revisit it in the book. I hope you enjoy it.
