I have been reading so many dramas lately. They have all been good but I’m sick of going through tissues. I wanted to dig into my library and find some paranormal fun. Vamps, shifters, fae and orcs this is the kind of world I was looking for. But my big problem with this book is the main character Dana is an asshole. I love tough women characters, especially in paranormal books, but I could not find anything to really like about her. She was even dismissive to her very sweet wife. The other main character in this book is Nissa and she is clearly a psychopath or maybe sociopath (actually can you be both?) She is messed up and I actually think I liked her better than Dana.

I like the premise of this book; this supernatural world and the potential of where this series could go. I am going to give book 2 a chance. I’m hoping I will finally connect to Dana or at least like her enough to continue with the series. This has the potential to be a fun series, but it’s not there yet for me.

Drawing Dead (Dana McIntyre Must Die #1) by S.M. Reine is the first book in the series and I like it already. This gal is kick ass and very different for other hard ass lead females. She is chubby, yep, chubby, that makes me like her right there! She is married to a female Orc! Ok, I am not lesbian but I like the fact it is so different and cool, an Orc! Now how cool is that? This is not like any other lead kick ass leads now is it? She fights vamps like no other and she has a mean rep, newbies on the force stop and gawk at her...yeah, she is that bad ass! But, one night, she gets a small bite while fighting the vamps. WTF? Now, she is a bad ass vamp fighting vamp! Doesn't that make her even scarier? Unfortunately, no Kindle unlimited as of right now so I am stuck and don't have the money to get the next book...;( I will wait and try to find it if it goes on sale...that is how I got this one. Lots of action and fun in this book. Try it out!!!

I've got to admit that I haven't been a fan of Dana since Genesis. Which brings up the point that even though each series in S.M. Reine's crazy, creative world can be read as a stand alone, I still don't recommend it. That's probably because I've read pretty much all the books in all the series (I still have a couple in the Descent series that I need to read.) I'm honestly not obsessed, I just love these books and will continue to strongly suggest to anyone who will listen... READ THEM ALL... but, I digress. Readers met Dana when she was just a little girl. She's come a long way since then and she's not so little and in many ways, not so nice. I wasn't really excited about an entire series devoted to Dana. There was another character that I really wanted to get to know better, but that's another story, for hopefully another time. *sigh* Anyway, I should have known better. I should have trusted this author to give me a whole new perspective once she let us in Dana's head. Not only did she semi-change my negative opinion toward Dana, she gave me a totally different feeling toward at least two other characters in the process.

So, back to Dana. She's pretty much larger than life... and I'm not just referring to her physical appearance. Everything about her is over the top, unapologetic and most of the time, inappropriate. Still, there's something about her. Something that makes those few she's close to care enough to want to protect her, mainly from herself. Dana's her own worst enemy and that trait becomes even worse when she gets bitten. It may even cause one of the people she cares about most to pull away. The thing about Dana is that she loves as hard as she fights and when one of her family suffers, she takes it personally. Her safety and well-being don't matter as long as the people she's trying to protect are safe from harm. She takes unnecessary risks that drive her crew nuts, but they stand behind her regardless. I kinda love that about all of them now... yeah, I didn't see that one coming.

Then there were the bad guys. Some were worse than others and that designation switched back and forth. Sometimes it's the most unassuming character that you need to watch out for and Nissa was one of them. Being in her head, even for a little while, was a very scary place to be.

Just a couple more things worth mentioning. First, in true S.M. Reine form, holds nothing back - the good, the bad and the gore... her descriptions are notorious, but I gotta say, the "expulsion" description was a bit over the top, even for her. *shivers* Then there's the cover. I'm not someone who judges a book by its cover. I hardly ever mention covers when I review a book, but this one... it's so perfect. Too often covers don't even come close to depicting the character within the book. This cover doesn't just come close, it is totally Dana. I kinda love that.

I didn't go into Drawing Dead expecting to want to get to know Dana better, but I shouldn't be surprised that's exactly what happened.

I received Drawing Dead in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I was asked to review an ARC copy of this book and was so glad I said yes! It was brilliant! This new series by S.M. Reine has all the elements of a great urban fantasy - a strong main character, my fave vampires and a no holds barred attitude!

Dana McIntyre, a vampire hunter, has a bit of a grudge against vampires and one in particular. One who is taunting her year after year and she is determined to find out who this vamp is and kill him/her! Simple as that!

Unfortunately for Dana, during a raid on a vamp-owned business, she attacks a master vampire, who does what vampires do best and bites her. Dana gets her own instant revenge when the vamp in question swallows something life-threatening, but it is too late for Dana. She is now becoming one of them! One of those she has sworn to eradicate from the whole of Las Vegas. Her only hope now comes from another vampire, only this time she's one of the bloodless, a vampire who has not yet taken human blood, is not as strong as a blooded vampire and one who has a side to her I certainly didn't expect. Nissa tries to help Dana, but events happen and Dana twists the knife back into Nissa, literally.

I really liked Dana - she was ruthless, reckless and didn't care about what others thought of her. However, her passion to destroy the vampires is slowly pushing her away from everyone who cares about her, including her wife and her transition into a vampire makes it so much harder for Dana to deal with. She accepts quite readily that she will die, but not before she takes every other vampire out first. Her friends, work colleagues and family, on the other hand, try to make sure that she does not die alone and will do everything they can to help her.

Nissa was an interesting vampire too - she's an empath and can feel human emotions, something she really does not enjoy. The major twist involved Nissa and I was genuinely shocked at her actions at the end. I do wonder how that will all play out in the next book. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Thank you to Sara and Angie for inviting me to read this book! A great read and a powerful start to this new series.

WOW!!!! OMG!!!!! Of all of S.M. Reine's massive series(s), this is my favorite!!!! I couldn't stop reading once I started.

I almost missed this one. I had gotten so far behind in my email that I didn't see the one offering to read/review Drawing Dana. Luckily I was offered a reprieve and allowed to read it even though late. Because since I met Dana McIntyre I have loved her. She is the bitch with a heart of gold. She is strong with the right amount of weakness. She is the vampire slayer who has been bitten. And I love the name of the weapon of choice. Spoilers! Can't tell you!

Some of the many series(s) are a little dark or 'demonie', or too far into fae. And as much as I hate vampire stories, this should have been a non-starter. But it was Dana!!! I knew I couldn't go wrong.

What I like and have liked about Sara's writing has been her use of places where I have lived or at least visited. This one takes place in Las Vegas. Never lived there but been there enough to recognize the place. I never saw the vampires there but it is easy to imagine them there. Ms. Reine often writes of Reno. I did live there a while. But my Reno looked nothing like the one in her books, except, they did. Her imagination put beings there that I must have overlooked.

Please, if you get the chance, read this book. It is written so that you can start here. BUT... I suggest you start at the beginning: Six Moon Summer. Watch the world around you change into Reine's world. So many adventures await, including this one.

I can't wait for the next book!!!!!!!

Dana McIntyre has always had an issue with vampires, even more than your average vampire hunter. They have history and she holds a grudge

So she does not take being bitten and turning into a vampire well. She fully intends to die before she turns. But not before taking all of Las Vegas’s hundreds of vampires down with her.

There is a possible cure- but is Dana willing to risk that? Can Vegas survive without Dana? And can it survive her vengeance?

I am now becoming ever more intimidated and by S.M. Reine’s world - because she has written about 300 series each of which have eleventy million books in it, all of which are connected and linked to a vast meta plot and world changing activity - and I AM SO BEHIND. So finding this new series my reactions were both lots of glee and a kind of gibbering terror. I will catch up with all her books! I will!

I was going to skip this until I caught up. But the cover. You know I’m not resisting that cover, right?

That said, despite the utter terrifying vastness that is S.M. Reine’s excellent world building and the truly massive amount of events that have passed, this book still works on its own even if you’re unfamiliar with the vastness. It does refer to major events in the larger world - events I’m only vaguely aware of - but this isn’t a vast world changing story. This is the story of Dana, Las Vegas and activities there. This history matters in terms of how the supernatural took over, how people were transformed by the Event and how much changed - but the details of it are not remotely necessary to tell Dana’s story. Ok, the gods thing? The gods thing lost me. I definitely need some severe elaboration on the whole deity thing.

That doesn’t mean the world isn’t amazing and broad and rich and weird. With the very conventional supernatural vampires and wereanimals, but throwing in some truly terrifying and alien fae with a very different take on anything I’ve seen before. And the cutest orc you ever did see

In fact let’s hit Dana and her wife Penny. First of all wife - yes, Dana is a lesbian, yes we have a lesbian protagonist, no she’s not “lesbian for Penny only” she is attracted to women and definitely loves Penny. Their relationship is not in any way fairy tale - there’s a lot of conflict and difficult there: but it’s down to Penny’s previous trauma as a victim of a serial killer, it’s Dana’s obsessive hatred of vampires, it’s her drinking too much - there’s a lot of complexities which make Dana not an easy woman to live with or love but they definitely do love.

Penny is also an orc - which means she’s huge and sweaty and has horns - and is still much gentler, more timid and generally more delicate than the touch talking, hard drinking rough and tumble - though much smaller - Dana. I like that because all too often depictions of same-sex relationships feel the need to throw gender roles in there - and here we have a relationship that turns these stereotypes on their head and has two big, not-conventionally attractive, yet still very powerful women leading it

We also have a trans woman who is an integral part of the city and the story and what i love is that her being trans is not oblique or subtle - we’re very very very clear including the party Penny and Dana had with her to celebrate milestones in transitioning - while also making it clear she’s a fully developed integral character beyond that. She does use being trans as a rhetorical tool a little too extremely to try and poke Dana into action in a way that doesn’t feel appropriate in both the coarse terms and draws unnecessary comparisons with the supernatural.

To me the most compelling character was Nissa, because she was so far away from anything I expected. And I’m frustrated that I can’t reveal anything about the empathic vampire without spoiling so much what makes her so surprising, unique and her story so utterly chilling. This is an excellent, completely unique take on this kind of character that I have never ever seen before and left me confused, slightly in awe and very very disturbed.

We also have Anthony Morales, a major figure in Dana’s organisation who is latino, the second in command of the vampires, and definitely the mover-and-shaker behind the scenes is Indian: both are important in this book and likely to be much more so in future books.

Well this was disappointing.

Normally I like this author, but this book was just annoying.
I didn't like the characters and the world builder wasn't as good as I'd normally expect from SM Reine. True, it was one of the earlier books, but still...

The blurb sounded ok, but the plot ended up being a bit too cliche and annoying at times. On the bright side, it's a pretty forgettable read, so it wasn't that bad either.

Oh well, the series was worth a try. I won't go on with it though.

I was pretty disappointed in this book. But largely because I went in with really high hopes. I bought it because the heroine is a fat, butch lesbian and how often do they get to be the heroes in a story...an action hero no less? It wasn't the diversity aspect of the story that let me down though. Dana is just as the cover suggests (and YES she even got to be fat and butch on the cover!). She's married to a butch-ish woman. So, Reine didn't even play into the 'one of them has to be femme' trap. I love that. The police chief is a ball-busting trans woman, and it's engaged in the book, not just dropped in as a token. And not all the other characters are straight, white, cis, etc. So, I'm not disappointed to have bought a book that includes a lot of things I wish more books incorporated (Positively represented fat women on book covers? Hell yes, more!).

Unfortunately, what let me down was that Dana is so darned unlikeable. She's rude and vile and dismissive of people who care for her. I don't mean that as any sort of 'proper women don't act that way.' Heck yes, give me more cursing, belching, sarcastic women. I mean it in the sense that she's almost cruel to a wife that loves her, prioritizing her own wishes over heartfelt pleas. She snarks off to people who are actively trying to help her, as if they are being unreasonable, etc.

What's more, Dana is basically suicidal for a large part of this book, which means she runs head-long into battles with so little regard for her own life that it felt too much like a miracle that she continued to survive. Heroes/heroines that are so perfect in battle that they never even consider fear what is are flat and uninteresting, IMO.

All in all, Reine's writing is fine. And despite there being 40 books in this universe (as of the publication of Drawing Dead), the book is readable as a standalone. But I wouldn't go so far as to claim you don't feel the lack of those other books. There were several decisions important in this book that are made based on the events of other books, and you notice.

Set in and around Las Vegas, Nevada, in the year 2034, Drawing Dead by S.M. Reine presents an alternate world. The novel references “Genesis” several times, an event that happened around 2015 after old and new gods brought their fight to Earth, causing a void that destroyed everyone’s soul. After a “reboot,” everyone was reborn, but different. Now there are witches, shape shifters, vampires, fairies, and humans. Not everyone came back, and not everyone came back how they had been before, but preternaturals are American citizens now.

In 2034 is when we meet Nissa, a vampire who hasn’t completely transformed. After being injected with vampire venom through a bite, a human will die and transform, but nothing is complete until he/she drinks blood. Nissa’s never had blood, not in four years. She can’t: she feels everything humans feel, and her extreme empathy is crippling.

The only human who is so devoted to a single mission — kill all vampires — that she barely feels emotes is Dana McIntyre. Dana is a tank of a woman. Fat, strong, abrasive, rude, distant. She’s wanted all vampires dead since one captured and tortured her wife, an orc named Penny. But after Dana is bitten by a vampire who releases its venom, she’s on a suicide mission. Better dead than vampire. And she might as well take down as many vampires as she can before she buries herself for good.

Drawing Dead had that same strong female feeling that Fat Assassins had. Kicking in doors, shooting guns, hand-to-hand fighting — it’s all there. I’ll say this book is not for anyone who wants a civilized story. Dana explains how after she was bitten by the vampire, “she’d taken a big dump in the toilet” and quit needing food, air, or a heartbeat. Now, some readers are going to claim such descriptions are juvenile or demonstrate a lack of the writer’s imagination. But let me reassure you there are people for whom only the phrase “big dump” will do, even if it’s not you. I’ve also never laughed so suddenly as when I read, “She could see his half-deflated dong flopping like a windsock.”

Now that I’ve scared some of you off, let me get to the positives that aren’t crass.

R.M. Reine represents a variety of people. Sometimes it’s in the name, such as a Hispanic or Japanse surname. Other times, it’s in a sentence that suggests a character is asexual: “Even before she’d died, she’d found it difficult to see people with sexual interest.” Then there’s Dana and Penny, lesbians who are so different (orc and human, sweetheart and cold heart, blacksmith and vampire hunter) but pair perfectly together. You never wonder why Dana and Penny love each other, but it’s not mindless love, either. The couple make some tough decisions based on what happens in each scene, and they felt realistic.

Given the cover and premise, I wasn’t sure I’d like the plot of Drawing Dead, but I found it interesting, challenging, and coherent. Although urban paranormal fantasies have tropes, I couldn’t guess what the characters were going to do, and I was surprised to learn that while the novel had an ending point, there are three more books that follow directly, meaning you can enjoy more Dana and Nissa if you want to!

I did learn that S.M. Reine has been writing Dana’s character for a long time, but never in her own series. Thanks to a PDF the author created, I now see that if I wanted to go nuts, I could read more about this world, which Reine has dubbed Descentverse. Dana McIntyre’s four-book series is actually the 9th installation of this world. OMG. To delve deep into this crazy world or to leave it alone and just read the Dana section? Given that these books all have nearly 5 stars on Amazon, I think you know the answer.

While reading Drawing Dead I felt happy, energetic, and completely emerged. A highly recommended fat-positive read!

Dana's no holds barred approach to, uhh, everything, is sort of like a train wreck you can't look away from. She's the textbook definition of a hot mess and I don't know whether to cheer her on or cringe as she throws herself headfirst into danger again and again.

And again.

And again.

The woman is described as a tank and she's doing her level best to make people see her that way. She's a force of nature. An undead force of nature, now, but still.

So. Dana has a few issues. She's a little bloodthirsty, a lot reckless, and she's not good talking out her feelings. Which puts a bit of a strain on her relationship with her wife. Frankly, Penny's been a champ for putting up with Dana's obsessions as long as she has. Which isn't to say I don't get where Dana's coming from. She's the type of person who blames herself when she can't protect those she loves and a few issues in her past have her beating herself up something fierce.

BUT...her friends and colleagues and Penny have been patient. And Dana has a hard time seeing her own worth. This lends itself to a blow-up or two because those around her DO think she's worth keeping around.

Anyway. Vampires. Vegas. Not so nice things happening to not so nice people. And one vamp who looks at Dana with something like hero worship. Which is either funny or scary depending on how you look at it.

Vegas, kiddos. Dana's there and she's not going to let things fall apart. Maybe. You know, if she can get through the purging and bodily fluids part.

PS. Cover love. So much cover love.

What's that?  Sara Reine has a new series out and would I like to read it??? There is really only one answer to that - a resounding YES!!!

Relatively short, at 230 paperback pages, this book, whilst set in the richly detailed Descentverse, has, to my mind, a very different feel to it.  The other books are all about finesse, magic, politics and intrigue, much like the lead characters.  They have a giddying level of plot complexities that I just sometimes can't keep up with.  Not so with this one.  Much like Dana herself, this book is much more straightforward, more blunt and to the point.

Now, don't get me wrong - this is absolutely not a criticism.  Far from it.  The different narrative voice works very well for this particular story line.  Dana, whilst on the surface one of the more crude characters that the author has gifted us, is nevertheless every bit as complex as one might expect from Ms Reine's characters - she's just got different wrapping.

Ms Reine continues to produce fresh, entertaining stories.  Long may that trend continue.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

You need to get to the 3rd chapter to first meet the heroine. Then you understand the reasons for the cover. She acts a a redneck man of the cliché variety, not particularly pleasant, and above all weird. A few pages later, you understand. She's a "butch" in a lesbian couple. Groan. Kill me now.... And you brake quite abruptly.

I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I found this book witty and compelling. I have been addicted the Decentverse and the universe Sara Reine created when I first stumbled upon James and Elise in the first 3 Decent books, which are free on Amazon. Since then, I have found myself eagerly reading all of her creations, stumbling from one to the next as quickly as I can. There are many characters that I have been hoping to learn more about, and Dana McIntyre was no exception. We first see her in childhood, and then in glimpses throughout the Mage Craft series.I am thrilled that we finally get a story from her point of view.

Here in Drawing Dead, we see her truly coming to the ultimate test of character. She has been turned into a vampire. the thing she hates most. We see how others view her change, and how her relationships are affected. I for one can't wait to see how things end up with Penny, her wife, in future books.

One of the things I found most compelling when I started this book, is that for the first several chapters, it seems to be told from every perspective except for Dana's. All we seem to know until we finally get her point of view, is that Dana's life has been a mess for the past few years, and no one can seem to figure out why. It was very interesting to piece all of the perspectives together and then to have Dana come in and reinforce everything.

Sara also brought new riveting characters into the mix. Nissa, a bloodless vampire, unable to kill but full of dark and twisted urges. We see her make choices throughout the book of whether she will chose good or evil, and her choice, while surprising, adds significant depth to the book.

I am excited to see how the next book plays out! This one ended on quite a cliffhanger. You do not have to have read any of SM Reine's other novels to understand this book. If you are a fan of urban fantasy, jump right in!

OK, wow - this book really surprised me in a good way. If you've never experienced this universe and are not well versed in the mythology, you can probably appreciate this book, but I have read them all and had some... preconceived notions. I honestly didn't like Dana when I met her in the previous books as an adult. I didn't know how I could possibly get through an entire book about her, but I devour everything by this author so I gave it a shot. I am so glad I did!

This story takes place in Vegas, where the Hunting Club is taking shots at the local vampire group while they take shots right back. The cops and the OPA are done turning a blind eye to these activities and have threatened them with an end to both of them if they don't behave. Dana is not really one for behaving and neither are some members of the vampire group. Oh, and then there's the whole issue where Dana just got forcibly turned into a vampire. That kind of throws a wrench into her plans.

Aside from Dana's dramas (which also involve some lovelife issues, of which there appear to be many), we spend a bunch of time in Nissa's head. She's a vampire with empathy who has never actually gotten up the nerve to drink blood. She's in good with her vampire friends but she is also not really a team player. You've always got to watch out for the quiet ones in these books. Oh, and the familiar characters from previous stories. Really, you've got to watch out for them all, since this author loves to surprise you.

While this book was really frickin' entertaining to read, it is certainly not a standalone, wrap-everything-up type book. We get to see into Dana's world and, wow, it is messed up. I can't wait to see what Dana does next, and where we head from here. With all the changes and bad guys we've now met, it should make for a really great new series.

Drawing Dead (Dana McIntyre Must Die #1) -- S.M. Reine (18 chapters) June 20-21, 2019

Note: While there are LBTQA+ characters in this story, there is nothing sexual that would cause anxiety to queer-phobia readers. Give this book a whirl if you like paranormal stories.

When I was looking through my ’To-Reads” this one popped; I remember buying this book, but didn’t remember the plot. As I started to read it, I wasn’t sure why I had bought it. I wasn’t sure if I would continue it. But by chapter 4, a major character is doing something slightly wrong and I became intrigued.

One of the reasons I thought I would stop reading: this very character, who was prominent from the first page, seemed destine to die and I really didn’t want to waste time and energy coming to that conclusion. But the ballsy move made me want to read more to find out if that was truly going to happen.

This story is a paranormal story between vampires and humans with extra-ordinary/unnatural powers. I am not a fan of these kinds of stories, but I must of been hooked into this description in some way.

As it turned out, the story did hook me. And after I read about the first LGBTQA+ reader, I remembered why I had downloaded this book. Throughout the book, there are cultural clues that places this story in a pop culture timberline, albeit alternative. Deep in this book, there are some very hilarious scenes. But I couldn’t decided if that was intended or not.

The worst part of this story is that I was led to believe when I bought it that it was a new series, that I didn’t need to know the background of the characters. While that may be true, many times I felt hopeless lost in the context of the plot, scenes, event.

Overall, a pretty decent book. I’m glad I stuck with it. It did read a lot faster than I suspected it would. I am not going to continue this journey with the characters.

Three stars.

Dana is not your average vampire killer. She is tough, swears like a sailor and takes no prisoners on her mission to rid Los Vegas of all the vampires. I found her character refreshing and I am interested to see where this series goes. Being a fan of this author there are quite a few characters from other series thrown in so although it is not essential it is better to have read her other series first. You can pick up the story easily enough but having known the history with Dana and Anthony it gives you valuable insight into the characters backstory and gives this book more depth. There is never a dull minute as Dana runs into battle putting her life in danger. She is not one to give in or give up so this story keeps you turning the pages in anticipation of her next move.

Nissa is the complete opposite and she is drawn to Dana's dark side and lack of empathy which is appealing to Nissa as she feels way too much. Penny is engaging as Dana's significant other and brings out the softer side in the vampire hunter yet they both will be tested and will the cost be worth it if Dana chooses to remain on the path to her destruction. I cannot wait for the next book to see how these relationships develop over time.
I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review and seriously for all those out there who only read books with pretty covers you are obviously not interested in an awesome story. Not all the vampires look like Damon and Stefan Salvatore!

I have read all of the books in this massive universe and I find that each of the characters are really given the time and space to tell their story.

Dana finally gets her time in the spotlight and, she is awesome in an unashamed, move the world to make progress kind of way. Based on her history and fighting vampires all her life when she is turned to one herself you can tell she has true friends when they band around her and cover her back no matter what she is trying to accomplish.

This book doesn't get 5 stars from me however because of Nissa. I have found little to make me appreciate her as a character except for perhaps as an "opposite" to how amazing Dana is. Once I made it through the 20% where she was the character taking up most of the story it got so much better.

This story is fast and furious as it picks up speed. the action and Dana's antics will absolutely keep you reading.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.

Dana McIntyre has been fighting monsters since before she could walk. She lost her parents to monsters and all she has ever done is fight them. The vampires hate her and would love to see her dead. Her goal is kill every last one of them, that ensures that the one vampire that has slipped through her fingers will die!

Nissa has been a vampire for four years and has never drank human blood. She feels unimaginable empathy of anyone she encounters which makes it impossible. The day that Nissa runs across Dana her world changes. She’s see someone who can teach her how to kill without feeling.

Reine is one of the best writers I read. Her books all lead forward in her world and are never boring. She has over 40 books that have weaved one of the most original stories I have ever read. Don’t miss the chance to catch this one!

It is so good to see Dana finally having her own book after popping up in any others, she stayed true to her character you got to know in the other books and finally get to under stand her more. This book has great characters like Anthony, Chief Villanueva ,sweet wee Penny, Nissa (who I keep changing my mind on whether I like her or not!) and Brianna. It was a great steady pace and a story line that keeps you hooked while throwing in a few heart stopping moments and twists.

Looking forward to seeing what happens in book 2!

I Wish I'd Known

I recall seeing the author's description of her "Descentverse" and feeling it really wasn't for me. I got sucked in by the hype and picked up this book. An unappealing, rude, crude heroine with an Orc wife. A transgender shape-shifter Sheriff. At this point I go back to see if there was anything in the Amazon blurb to suggest how much I was not the demographic, but ...no...nothing. There was nobody to like. The characters were all bad. All I wanted was for them all to die. I got interested at about 90% because it seemed they really would all be dead at the end. The writing wasn't bad, though.

I have been on Sara's ARC team for a while now, and she never lets me down. I can't say that I ever find a flaw in her writing or storylines. I have never really cared for Dana as she has been portrayed in the other series, but the author has found a way to make me understand her and want to read more of her story and want to know more about her. I enjoyed the fast pace of things after a few chapters of slower details. One thing I have always appreciated about Dana was her diving into a challenge head first and kicking butt. Another great start to another series that I am sure is going to be epic!

A new book following Dana in her own series in the Decentiverse!
Can be read without reading all the other books in the series but it's preferable to read the rest because y'know they're all kickass urban turn your world upside down kind of fantasy!
We get to see more about the world of the vampires in this story after Genesis when the world got totally reset and some dead came back to life, interestingly not all as vampires.
Dana has to make some heart wrenching decisions and you feel it right alongside her as you read the story.
Love love loved it, anyone that is into fantasy stories absolutely needs to read this!

I feel mean leaving a more negative review, but I didn't enjoy this book at all. I picked it up because vampire hunting is fun and I'm always interested in lesbian protagonists, but reading this felt bad. The protagonist was unlikeable, but not in a way that feels like you're not SUPPOSED to like it; it was like reading about someone kicking puppies and the story loves to see puppies being kicked. The actual plot was alright, but having it spearheaded by the main character made reading it a pain. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't recommend this.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange of a review. I've always really enjoyed Dana's character in her other books so I was excited to finally get a book a lot about her. I love this massive universe this author has created. Her books are always action packed and this one was no exception. I look forward to delving deeper into Dana's character in the next one.

Drawing Dead

Drawing Dead is written well in the way that you can envision the characters and what is happening. I had trouble connecting with the main character Dana. She felt like such a negative and selfish personality. It wasn't a "having a bad day" sort of thing either. She just seems to be that sort of person I guess .

Dana McIntyre is a vampire hunter and part goddess. She wants to kill the murder of vamps called the Paradisos, but she gets turned during a battle. As long as she doesn't drink human blood, she has a chance to get to the experimental cure before Nissa, an empath vamp who was turned four years ago and never drank blood. This book is filled with all manner of creatures and is worth checking out.
