Eight years ago federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire.
Now in VAMPIRE SUN, private investigator Samantha Moon looks into the bizarre disappearance of a woman who enters a Starbucks, but never leaves. Her distraught husband, a person of interest, hires Sam when a Corona Police Department detective gets killed and the case grows cold.
In addition, Sam's former guardian angel-now a fallen angel-makes another, startling appearance. Not to mention, Kingsley, her cheating werewolf lawyer ex-boyfriend, is trying to win her back...at all costs. Daughter Tammy's psychic powers are growing exponentially, as are her best friend Allison's, and son Anthony deals with school violence and starts boxing lessons with his own supernatural strength. Just one big, happy, paranormal family.
Most of all, Sam needs to get her hands on the fourth medallion. Fang, her former friend and love interest, has the diamond medallion, which reputedly will restore mortality, yet allow a vampire certain powers. Needless to say, Sam will do almost anything to get it. But the demoness within Sam threatens to kill the last shreds of her humanity. Suddenly, killing for blood doesn't seem that heinous. Sam knows if she doesn't get that diamond medallion soon, it could be the end of her conscience... and the end of all that she loves most.

Vampire Sun Vampire for Hire, Book 9 By: J. R. Rain Narrated by: Dina Pearlman This book has Sam dealing with a lot of issues at one time. An ex-boyfriend werewolf, a ex-boyfriend gone vampire, a fallen angel that loves her, her son and her has a bond growning stronger now, and a lead to the last medallion. Also the evil from the medallion in her is trying to get more power and Sam is enjoying the vamp side a little too much. The narration is awesome as usual!
"Vampire Sun” is Book 9 of the “Vampire for Hire” series. The series is not lesfic, but features a generally entertaining MC who is trying to figure out how to be a good person, mother and friend while also being a vampire. You have to read the series in order for the events and characters to make any sense. Some of the books are terrific, and some are so-so.
This book is slightly better than so-so. It does advance the story arc, and the detective mystery that PI Samantha Moon works on is better than some of the other books. The narrator continues doing an excellent job.
Overall, though, this book offered nothing particularly new or interesting, other than moving the story along. It’s a 3.5*, rounded up to 4* on the strength of the narrator.
Another fast read. Just love these short fast reads. Theres not as much going on in Vampire Sun. Sam, the private investigator/vampire, searches for a woman who enters a Starbucks coffee shop and seems to just disappear into thin air. She also receives two very special gifts from "the Librarian", and begins to rekindle the flame with Kingsley.
The one thing that bothers me about this series, is that these books are too short. Other that that I really enjoyed this book. Not "Great Literature" but definitely fun to read!
Samantha Moon has been hired by a man that could very well be losing his mind over the loss of his wife. Having gone into a Starbucks to get them both a drink, she went in and never came back out. Even weeks later the police have no clues, she went in and disappeared end of story or is it. Really, how can someone simply vanish?
When Samantha teams up with the new detective that has been assigned to the case, she’s able to find things that most would have missed but once again, not all is simple cut and dry in Samantha Moon’s world. Her children are getting stronger every day both physically and super naturally as is her friend Allison. Her love-hate relationship with Kingsley is still just that and there is still the ongoing question of what happened to Fang and the diamond medallion. The very powerful medallion that could release her from the demon inside her that is growing stronger each and every day.
While I didn’t like this story as much as I did some of the other ones, it was still good. You get answers to some of the age old questions that if you have you read the stories you may have been asking yourself. You still get the inner dialog of craziness that Samantha thinks about all the time but I didn’t the final outcome of what happened to Lucy Gleason. I was hoping that it would have been some great climatic super natural ending and it didn’t. I debated on giving it simply 3 stars but I feel it was better than that since you do get answers to other questions but it’s just not quite a 4 stars either.
This Samantha Moon episode contained a great 'mystery on the side' while we learned much new information about Samantha (as did she!). This was funny, cute - totally how I remember the Vampire For Hire series. I don't know why I didn't follow through with the series, instead taking a far too long break from it. While reading Vampire Sun it was easy to recall just why Vampire For Hire has been one of my favorite all time series. If any indie vampire book series deserves a tv buyout, this is the one. A movie couldn't do it justice as there are just too many details to fit in to a 2 hour sitting. Lots of imagination and story building in this series! Samantha is truly good, defying any evil inclinations vampirism has brought her. With it's great cast of characters, I believe this could be something fabulous for weeknight tv!
I listened to the audio version of Vampire Sun, with Dina Pearlman narrating, and if even possible - this fine narration takes my favorite series/book character to even higher levels. I found myself laughing out loud many times - laughing along with the reader who skillfully played out the emotions of the characters throughout the book. My favorite was an outburst by Sam while in a restaurant with Kingsley - with Kingsley later reiterating the outcome. So funny! I also enjoyed the references to Knighthorse and the PI gang - wish there were more Knighthorse episodes. Read those all years ago and still recall that I loved Jim Knighthorse!
Perfect 5 star read and 5 star narration!!! Loved it!!!
I absolutely love this series. I love Samantha Moon and her sense of humor. In this one she takes on another client whose wife walked into a Starbucks and disappeared. On the journey to find the answer she finds so many answers to other thing going on in her life. It was fun and exciting and sad and hopeful. I recommend this to anyone that enjoys a good mystery and a vampire. To someone that likes a wise cracking funny heroine. Can't say enough about how good this series is.
Finally!!! Finally I got an ending I enjoyed!!! After staying with this series, fighting frustration and annoyance over several issues, I got my wish, and the ending I’ve been wanting!!! I’m almost giddy with amazement that I got to the end of a volume, and didn’t want to pull out my hair!! I won’t spoil anything for anyone here, though I wish I could gush on for paragraphs, but so far this has been my favorite book of the series!! After reading of Samantha’s struggles that never end, it was so refreshing to have a book that actually delivered some good news, that gave her hope for the future, and helped her focus on who and what in her life made her the happiest and healthiest. I have to admit that I’m already worrying that this may just be a high before a long, dark fall, but I’m at least glad Samantha got to experience some happiness, and I along with her, before anything else happens!!
Also, I really, really enjoyed this book, but please Author Rain would you let up on the skid mark references?!! Or at the very least add a conversation between Samantha and her son in which she respectfully, but clearly makes her point that he needs to pay more attention to his personal hygiene, gives him the instruction and extra education he obviously needs, teaches him how to wash his own underwear, and provides him with the readily available, easily flushable personal cleansing cloths that could end the nightmare for everyone involved?!! Please!! I’m a mother, and I would never let this situation continue, if for no other reason than a kid is going to be mercilessly teased if he walks around in that condition on a regular basis, or even if it’s a one-time horrendous accident at school!!! Children can be cruel, and it’s irresponsible parenting to treat something like that as a joke all the time!! It’s also extremely gross to read about in every single book!!! I’m begging you, please stop!!
I really liked the book. Sam’s not working with the previous detective Sherbert She’s working with a new detective on a missing person case. Sam and her children are still recovering from the death of Danny. They are still trying to heal. Plus, and I was really upset at how the author had decided to just leave Danny in the cave in the previous book.
Anyway, during previous book Danny’s body was never removed from the cave. It has been hard for Sam and her children to heal from his death. They weren’t able to bury him. The kids were not able to find closure. However, now the kids seem to be doing better. Also, Anthony Sam’s son has gotten into boxing, which is good. Also, Tammy is starting to read more and more.
Sam also begins to find out more about herself and where she came from. Basically she finds out why the dark masters want to control her and her kids. A lot of her questions are answered. Sam is a descendent from Hermes.
Now as for the missing person case that Sam has decided to take on, it is a hot mess. The husband hired Sam to try and find his missing wife. Apparently the wife went into a Starbucks but never came out. Video doesn’t even show that the woman even came out. But at the ending part of the book, the woman made this elaborate escape so she could get away from her husband. She didn’t want him to go to jail, she just wanted him to suffer the mental abuse that he had basically put her through. And according to her, it was a lot of mental and physical and verbal abuse. But when Sam had read the husband, she did not get a sense that he had actually physically abused His wife. So that’s why Sam went in as hard as she did to try and find a woman.

I read this entire 15-book (so far) series back-to-back for the last couple weeks, plus quite a few short stories that relate. Free on Kindle Unlimited. It's a great series for a fan of paranormal mystery. The set up is that a mom in California was changed into a vampire in an attack. Fast forward several years and she's struggling with a failing marriage and raising 2 kids with her day time disability. As the years progress, her marriage fails, her kids mature, and her relationships with love interests/ friends/family grow. The characters are relate-able, there's a little humor, and very entertaining mysteries with interesting treatments of magic. Solidly fun reading!
This is probably more of a 3.5 star reading. I like that she made forward movement with finally learning more about her "demon" inside, but that took until near the end of the book and we are in book 9 now. We should know more. I was a bit surprised at who her inner demon was and Samantha's bloodline. But other than that, I hope her and Kingsly make it completely back together in the next book and I want to know more of Fang. So in a nutshell it was ok. These books are great for entertainment. This was the audible version.
The investigation in this book involved a clever woman who found an even more clever way of leaving an abusive relationship. Sam reconnected with Kingsley’s here. I like that. Fang, after mourning his sire, got together with a former girlfriend, so all that lovey dopey with Samantha ended with a whimper. I guess he really didn’t love Sam. He was more ‘in love’ with being a vampire. Such a shame. As for Danny, I didn’t want the idiot to end up the way he did. For his children’s sake. Borrowed through Kindle Unlimited.
I’ve been reading this series for a week or so now, and this is not the first time the book has referenced something that was obviously in a novella, yet I’ve only been able to find one. I’ve missed at least two. I find it to be rather frustrating. There are a few errors and typos, but the books are mostly well edited. I look forward to reading the rest of the series, as well as the Knighthorse and Spinoza series.
I think this was my favorite of the series so far. I loved the little Pop Culture mentions, Vampire Diaries, Beautiful Creatures, The Hunger Games.... I loved the "locked room" mystery with the missing woman. Sam speaks with . We learn some interesting tidbits about her demon and about her family line. We now know why she was attacked and turned into a vampire. And she's going to get back with Kingsley. Squee! Looking forward to book 10!
Wonderful mystery listening 🎧 Another will written mystery novel book 9 in the Vampire for Hire by J. R. Rain about the wife of a man disappearing and Samantha is hired to find her. The investigation is a challenge to Samantha's skills by she comes though in the end. I highly recommend this series and all series by J. R. Rain to reads of Fantasy Sci-Fi mysteries. Enjoy the adventurer of reading 🕶 or listening 🎧 to novels 🕵️♂️🎉👩🦱📖 2022
I can keep going on Samantha stories because there sooooo darn good!! I love that she's a PI and a mom. Keeps her strong and keeps her love strong she needs that's if she's gonna fight the witch that's in her!! And omg she can finally eat food. I love that librarian
The cat is out of the bag. There were a lot of Ts crossed and Is dotted in this one. Some very big answers revealed. I loved it. Not to mention how her case wrapped up. I may have to join a spoiler group! Anyways if you've read up to this point and don't know whether to read this one or not, you definitely want to. Trust me!
I love this series. It has continued to evolve in ways I could never imagine. The characters are unexpected and wonderful. This isn’t your normal vampire book. I really love the way the storyline has grown. Each story introduces something interesting and new. I love this series has so many books in it. I’ve enjoyed each one I’ve read.
The story is good. The characters drawing you in quite well. But it's the unnatural and sudden shift from the story to add "filler" which is what I call the insertion of unrelated and useless chatter that can only serve to pad the total word count for the publisher. It makes this book tedious.
What can I say it’s was another great book I always get to the end wanting to rush straight off and get the next one but I know I have to say a few words theses are brilliant books anyone looking for a superb series these are the books to read great plots and characters I highly recommend them a very well deserved 5 stars
I have been enjoying this series and how easy it is to get thru each book. Samantha Moon is back and still trying to fight the dark entity within and be a good mom. She learns more about the entity, more about how her son has gotten special and finds what she is looking for. All this as she starts to move forward in her forgiveness of Kingsley.
Read this series in order to get the best story possible :)
Another great read. Samantha has a new case she nerds to find a missing wife. Fang is keeping his distance and she knows that they will never be as close as before. Kingley is trying hard to win her back but will she let him in again? Will she be able to find the wife and find a way forward?
I missed this one when I was reading the series. Glad I found it. Most of the series is really good reading, but some of the later ones were a huge disappointment for me. This one I recommend.
Loved the fact she got to feel normal somewhat! The missing woman was great detective story. Many people go missing all the time some willingly and some not so much.
I won't say exactly, no spoilers here, but Maximus reveals info on a major aspect of Sam's inner demon. And a long awaited reunion with someone special.
Vampire Sun is book 9 of the series. I enjoyed this book but sometimes Sam does such stupid things. Plus her thoughts are calm and detailed but her words and actions are angry and impulsive. It doesn’t align.
Sam has a missing persons case, husband looking for wife. Is he a bad guy? Sam discovers a lot about the one living inside her and why she was chosen. Sam gains the ability to eat and be in the sun. Makes up with Kingsley.
Sam as always got involved in a weird case but did not have much activity on the supernatural. This is a fast read and again, her lovelife or I would say deets on the bed scene which is a lights out type is glossed real quick.
The last of the first year of Samantha Moon's story. Power creep gets huge after this one and the series shifts to more fantasy than woman-powered urban fantasy. That is, imo, it goes downhill after this book.
Another fine entry. Samantha keeps acting borderline hysterical at times and wants relationships on her terms, A real turnoff in many cases. Looking for the Fourth medallion and a missing housewife.
