Another wonderful trip down memory lane with the New Teen Titans as brought to us lucky readers by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. This volume kicks off with the Introduction of Brother Blood and it never slows down. Space opera in the Vega system with the Omega Men, the villainy of Blackfire and topped off with an impactful pair of social commentary issues on teen runaways. And the first appearance of a little troublesome terror teen titled Terra. Wolfman and Pérez are really hitting their strides now.

I can see why this series was considered one of the best at the time it was written, and even still to this day.

Once again, as with The New Teen Titans Archives, Vol. 3, The New Teen Titans Archives, Vol. 4 defies review; if you're this far into the New Teen Titans archive editions, you probably enjoyed the previous volumes as well. That being said, The New Teen Titans Archives, Vol. 4 represents a step forward for the series. In Volume 4, co-creators Marv Wolfman and George Pérez begin to set the stage for their major successes as serial storytellers, specifically their Judas Contract and Terror of Trigon arcs; Tara "Terra" Markov, the driving force behind The Judas Contract even makes her début in the present volume.

In this volume, Wolfman and Pérez make their first major forays into long-term storylines, upping the stakes for the Teen Titans and beginning to utilize the conventions of the medium to their fullest fruition. Seeing these individual issues collected in this form really makes the reader recognize the effort put into Wolfman and Pérez's collaboration; where previous episodes were just that—episodic—those set forth in The New Teen Titans Archives Vol. 4 make excellent use of continuity and ongoing storytelling. Seeds planted in previous volumes bear fruit here, and events that transpire in this volume have effects long after the 240th page of this book.

Discussing the mechanics of Volume 4 more particularly, Wolfman's scripting is the most fluid to date of the Archive Editions, and Pérez's art becomes more and more beautifully rendered with each page. The reader gets the (accurate) sense that Wolfman and Pérez's efforts are a collaboration in every sense of the word. And the truth that their collaboration would only improve—reaching its apotheosis in The Terror of Trigon—is strongly suggested here. I've lately been nostalgic for the superhero comics of my youth, and The New Teen Titans Archives Vol. 4 makes an excellent argument as to why.
