Whether these events constituted 'revolution' remains in dispute. The Anglo-Irish struggle and the constitutional transformation have been extensively studied, to the neglect of the accompanying social unrest and subsequent Civil War. This book explores neglected themes ranging from women's experience and youth culture to ex-servicemen and soviets. It exploits newspapers, military archives, official and private records. The focus of many essays is on the local experience, but many other chapters draw parallels and contrasts with contemporary Europe. The mentality of activists is explored using letters, memoirs and interviews.
