A gripping and fast-paced crime thriller by an NY Times best-selling author
Successful entrepreneur, Ross Spalding, has everything to live for; a thriving business, a stunning new home, and a high society wedding to his beautiful fiancée to look forward to in the coming months. That is, until his life comes to an abrupt, gruesome end.
DI Hero Nelson and his team need to dig deep to find the reasons behind someone wanting Ross Spalding dead. As more people connected to Ross also die, some in suspicious circumstances, the suspect list grows beyond all expectations, until a major clue presents itself and spins the investigation off in a totally new direction.
However, Hero’s personal life is also dealt a major blow when his parents are faced with a life or death situation. He is forced to put his personal problems aside when the murderers are revealed and Hero is faced with a tight deadline in which to apprehend them.

DI Hero Nelson is called to investigate the murder of Ross Spaulding. He was a well known member of society with a very successful business. He was engaged to be married to a beautiful woman. So who would want to shoot this man dead, set his body on fire, and leave in an unattended field?
Nelson and his team need to dig deep to find the why .. and then maybe they can find the who. Asking questions of his co-workers and employees, his partner falls over dead. Heart attack? Poison?
And his is not the only body that falls in this crime thriller.
Although 4th in a series, this is easily a stand-alone. Hero Nelson is a wonderful character. This particular books shows his professional side ... as well as the personal. His wife and children are staunch supporters of who he is and what he does. In turn, he tries so hard to not let the job take over his life. The reader is also introduced to his parents and his twin sister. A tragedy makes all of them evaluate their own lives.
This is an easy, fast-paced thriller that is riveting from the very first page. There are characters to love ... and some that seem to have no redeeming qualities.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I am still wiping tears after finishing another brilliant read in the Hero series by this author, but love to read these books as I see what has been going on in the world of my 'friends'! You feel a part of the bunch of inspectors and officers who work hard to keep the city safe, and when a particularly gruesome murder case is brought to their attention, you feel the tension to get it solved. This book can definitely be read as a standalone but it is so much more fun when you read the series! Great scenes, amazing characters and several smaller plots come together to give you an exciting read, it always feels so real!!
Double Jeopardy is the fourth book in the Hero crime series. This book is very easy to read as a stand alone so don’t worry if you haven’t read any of the others first before reading this one.
The story starts with a gripping prologue that had me desperate for more. I wanted to know as much as the police why a successful business man could be brutally murdered and to who could perform such an evil act. I was certain I knew at the beginning who was behind it only to find out later on I had got it totally wrong.
Not only does Hero have a tough case to try and crack, we get more of an insight into his personal life which I loved. It just makes the characters more human as we get to see Hero’s life away from work and to what his family life is like. Luckily for Hero he has a loving family background but himself and his family are about to be knocked sideways.
This was another read that as soon as I picked it up I couldn’t put it down until the very end. There is plenty going on to have the reader racing through the pages to what I can only say was quite an emotional ending. An enthralling read that had me devour it in one sitting and left me desperate for more.
My thanks to Bloodhound Books for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
It’s always a pleasure to read one of M.A Comleys books and I’m always excited when I hear there’s another one on the way! I was late to the Hero series (isn’t that tagline brilliant by the way… “Everyone needs a Hero”) but don’t worry if you are too, as this can be read as a standalone and you will then be able to catch up when you can. And you WILL want to catch up if you’ve never met Hero before! You’re going to love him!
What I love about the Hero series is that it’s as much about him and his family as it is the case he is working on. Hero Nelson is one of those men every woman will wish she was married to but he does have his fair share of personal problems when it comes to his family and here he is about to face one of the most traumatic experiences of his life. I don’t know how much more bad luck this family can take but everything that’s thrown at them seems to reflect the true nature of real life. And they always seem to handle any unexpected dramas with a quiet dignity that conspires to make them a lot stronger as a family.
The case itself is an intriguing one and the first chapter sets it up perfectly. When Ross Spalding turns up dead in a field the day after leaving work as normal, suspicion falls at first on his work colleagues but when further crimes take place, Hero needs to think laterally to follow the trail left behind. The storyline that follows involves a gritty police chase where Hero and his colleagues have to put in some good old fashioned police work to solve the case.
This is another gripping read from an author that never let’s me down yet. You can tell that these characters are real people to her and she cares about what happens to them as she brings them vividly to life in her books. She’s a natural storyteller with a creative imagination who never fails to impress me with her ability to captivate her readers from the very first page. Highly recommended by me.
I simply devour each and every book that this author writes. So voracious my appetite for her creations, I am glad she is as prolific as she is. Forget everything you think you know about quality and quantity and believe me when I say that every book she produces, in whatever series it belongs, is just as good, if not better, than the last. All her series are headed up with the most fantastic lead characters and, I have to admit, the one that features in this series, DI Hero Nelson, is a bit of a favourite of mine. If he wasn't already happily married (and real of course) I would be vying to snap him up myself! I think that one of the main reasons I love him so much is that, in this series, we get more than just a glimpse into his home life. Of course his investigations remain front and centre but this insight into his family life is what really grabs me with his stories. I have to warn you that the personal stuff he goes through in this book is a little bit sad but showing this, more vulnerable, side of him only makes me yearn for him all the more. And now we come to the main event in this book. The crime they are investigating is a bit convoluted. We start with the death of Ross Spalding, not just murdered but also burned, identified only from the ID found in his wallet. On further investigation, our faithful band of detectives find out that he was the head of Spalding Enterprise, a very successful company. With this in mind, off they pop to interview his staff and uncover some rather interesting information. Then tragedy strikes again and their initial main suspect also expires. With that avenue now closed to then, how are they going to close the case. And then the body count rises and things get even more interesting as the case takes a rather bizarre turn. As with all this author's books, I zipped through this one start to finish in only a couple of sittings. I have learned these days never to start one of her books unless my decks are clear cos I know I wont be able to put it down til I'm done, they grip hold of me far too tightly! As always, all the characters are brilliant. The main characters that I already know and love remain constant and their relationships and interactions, both personal and professional, are full of some wonderful bickering and banter that are synonymous with this author and is something she really excels at. The rest of the cast is just as well described and all play their parts to perfection. Plotting was tight and intricate. Definitely well researched and executed. With what was going on in Hero's personal life through this book, it's a wonder he managed to stay on top of things as well as he did. I was a bit of a blubbering wreck at times, talk about getting emotionally invested in characters! Things aren't great between him and colleague Julie either and they have a fair bit of work ahead of them to get things back on an even keel. Again, just like in real life; that's what this author really excels at. Most of us go through life with many plates in the air, just managing to keep them all going, some more laden than others and this is always reflected in the way she writes her characters. She keeps it real for sure. Anyway, I think I've said enough to do this book Justice (to name drop one of her other fantastic series!) and get across how much I loved this book, this series and indeed this author, so I am going to stop now and let you get on with reading it too.
My thanks as always go to the Publisher for the chance to read this book.
This book was a quick and easy read that reminded me of an episode of "Law & Order" - it relies on good ol' fashioned detective work to solve the case and wrap things up.
I wish there had been a little more drama in the storyline, but overall, the book kept my attention and I would read another with these characters.
DI Hero Nelson and his team are investigating the case of a businessman who didn't seem to have any enemies. And then weird things start to happen to those who were closest to him. How is it all related? Is it - or is it all coincidence? It's up to Hero and his colleagues to piece things together.
The premise of the book was interesting and I was drawn in immediately - how do you solve a case where there are no clues, no suspects, nothing? Hero and his team were also interesting characters. Plus, the personal storyline with Hero's family is just as dramatic as the case, adding a second layer to the story.
I just wish there had been some twist or something that really punched things up a bit. The ending was pretty straightforward. But things did get wrapped up neatly, so I can't really complain.
Overall, this was a quick, classic detective story. I'd read more from this author.
Another brilliant book by one of my favourite authors. I was hooked from beginning to end, I loved it. I highly recommend this book, a must read in my opinion. Huge 5 stars.
This is the 4th book in the Hero Series and they just keep getting better. A gripping read which I read in one sitting and am now desperate to read the next.
It starts off as usual with a prologue, which grabs you and doesn't let up until the last page, which I've become accustomed to with this Author and Hero Nelson is starting to become one of my favourite Detectives. With this book he is having to investigate the murder of a wealthy Businessman, Ross Spalding and while doing so more murders take place. He also has some personal problems to deal with which makes this another winner from M.A. Comley. She never lets us down and I always look forward to her next book, no matter which one of her series it is.
Double Jeopardy is the fourth novel in the series surrounding DI Hero Nelson, although part of a series Double Jeopardy lends well to being read comfortably as a standalone.
The prologue starts off at a rip-roaring pace with the brutal death of an executive businessman. Who could want Spalding dead, a man with seemingly no enemies and no obvious motive. Hero and his team delve into the world of business following leads, interviewing friends and colleagues all the while the death toll rises. I can honestly say that I had what I thought, was my eureka moment, I KNEW who killed Spalding but as the book progresses it becomes apparent I was categorically wrong.
The plot has a multitude of red herrings, I gamely plundered down the false paths to then pause and think hang on Mel you’ve led me a merry dance, proving to me that Mel is a wonder at weaving an intricate web of crime.
I thoroughly enjoyed the insight into Hero’s life, showing not just his professional life but also his personal life. Mel shows that Hero is human, life is not easy, sometimes a spanner is thrown into the works and we all have to try and make it through by holding it together. It was also good to read about the other characters which previously may not have been in the limelight all that often, allowing us to better understand and get to know Hero’s team.
Mel has accomplished an intense and intriguing crime thriller which I found difficult to put down, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, I had to get the end. Mel didn’t disappoint with an emotional but well rounded conclusion to Double Jeopardy.
Thank you to BloodHound Books, M.A Comley and Sarah Hardy for an advanced readers copy of Double Jeopardy in exchange for an honest review. It has been an honour to be part of the Blog Tour and thanks for the opportunity to review a fantastic crime thriller.
Businessman Ross is found dead in a field and DI Hero Nelson must now investigate the vicious murder of a man, seemingly liked by everyone except, of course, for his killer…
Introduction
Detective Inspector Hero Nelson (blame his mother for his having to live up to that name) finds the perfect way to get rid of his partner, Detective Sergeant Julie Shaw by offering her the chance of a promotion trajectory. Their professional relationship has always been a difficult one, especially since Julie’s reactions can be quite challenging. Little does he know that her prospect of promotion might put the pressure on him. First, they have a murder to solve of a man without an enemy in the world. To Hero, Ross’s business partner Laurence is a possible suspect, since he stands to gain the most. But not all is what it seems in this complicated case. If that is not enough, Hero’s personal life is about to change for the worst…
Storyline
It is a cold, misty morning in Manchester when DI Nelson is called to the scene of a crime: a murder most foul. Whoever killed the rich businessman, Ross Spalding, was clearly not interested in his money as his well-filled wallet has been left untouched. That begs the question of the motive: with a recently engaged fiancée who seems, however, not to be in touch with her future husband’s family, and a business partner who wants their company to take a different course. Then something happens during interviews at the business premises which necessitates Hero reviewing his list of suspects.
You would think the family of the murdered Ross should be forthcoming – but they are not. A strenuous case for Hero that only seems to be getting more difficult with every piece of evidence uncovered. To complicate matters, the pressure is rising as Hero’s boss is not pleased with what he sees as an apparent lack of progress as the investigation only slowly moves forward. If you think that is all Hero has to worry about, you are wrong. Dark shadows hide just around the corner, only waiting to make his life worse…
My Thoughts
I love the Hero series! Hero Nelson is a loveable character and a dedicated family man, even if he is a bit presumptuous and old-fashioned. In this fourth Hero Nelson story, his personal life is perhaps even more important than the murder investigation – and I love the author showing us Hero’s doubts and fears and inner turmoils, making it easy to empathise with him. The events of the last chapter… simply devastating. I cannot tell you more – really, not even the emotions it evoked in me because then you would have a clue…
This is the second Hero book I have read but I am still not sure if I like DS Julie Shaw. The bickering and banter between Hero and Julie are ongoing as ever but there is an edge to it we have not witnessed before. I am very interested to see how that will work out in the next Hero book! Double Jeopardy is another fast-paced thriller by MA Comley who has woven such an intricate plot that I had no idea who was responsible for the gruesome murder and why. Read it to find out!
Double Jeopardy Is the fourth book in the Hero series and like all of M.A Comley’s books she certainly doesn't disappoint grabbing my attention from the start right until the very last page.
We are taken on a rollercoaster ride where we catch up with DI Hero Nelson who faces a life or death situation with his parents. And the murder case of Ross Spalding a successful entrepreneur with the question of why would someone want him dead?!
So not only have we got the investigation going on we really get to know Hero with the story alternating between the case and his family. I have to say that M.A Comley has done a brilliant job of pulling at my heartstrings with this story taking me through a whirlwind of emotions. You can definitely feel the tension and emotion through the writing.
One of the things I love about the author’s writing is that you are always guaranteed a fast paced easy read.
I can’t wait to see what is in store next for Hero. I highly recommend Double Jeopardy and the rest of the series. Giving it 4 stars.
Another fantastic and fast paced ride from one of my favourite authors. I love Hero and the team having read all the others and this one was just as good if not better. I even shed a tear or two. Well done Mel xx
Wow! Ms Comley has only gone and done it again! The speed at which she is able to write such high quality, engrossing books is truly mind blowing! Double Jeopardy is no exception!
The fourth book in her Hero series, I was gripped from the very beginning. You don't have to have read the rest of the series to enjoy this book, although you are missing out if you don't! Fast paced, this thriller is highly recommended! Five shiny stars from purplebookstand!
This is the first book of the Hero series I have read and I really enjoyed it. Even though I have not read the previous books in the series, this book reads very well as a standalone too.
Even though this book was a police procedural and of course there are murders being committed which need to be solved, I found this book quite a gentle read in lots of ways. I think it was because the main character takes the role in his family just as seriously as he does his role as a police officer and that softened the story as a whole, which is kind of nice for a change. I would dearly like to read the next book in this series, because I became quite emotionally invested in the main character and in the secondary characters as well. Apart from being a dedicated police officer, Hero Nelson is a lovely husband, father, brother and son and this has really endeared me to him.
The Ross Spalding case is a tricky one without a lot of leads presenting themselves until the entire team digs deep, and when other people connected to him die as well, the race is on to find the perpetrator.
I really liked the way Mel Comley writes; she clearly is a good storyteller and she makes you care about her characters as if they are people you personally know.
Highly recommended read from me.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. Thank you to Bloodhound Books.
Alongside her famous Justice series, featuring the ever so feisty Lorne Warner, bestselling author Mel Comley is gradually building up her Hero series as well. Double Jeopardy is the latest (and in my opinion the best to date) heart-pounding instalment featuring DI Hero Nelson and his partner Julie Shaw.
The author wastes no time and goes straight for the jugular, kicking off the book with a brutal murder. Ross Spalding, a successful wealthy businessman is abducted by unknown persons from his office building one night and taken to a desolate field where he's murdered. His body is found by a farmer the following morning. Who wanted to get rid of this man so much? And why?
Hero and Julie Shaw race to the scene to start their investigation, starting with questioning the farmer and the dead man's colleagues. Some of Ross's workmates look suspicious and from the interviews it transpires that he was about to take some important decisions regarding the company's future. Was his murder connected to his work? Or was the reason much more personal?
When Hero finally thinks he's making some headway in the case, events take an unexpected turn forcing him back to the drawing board starting anew. Will he ever find out who killed Ross? And, if this baffling case were not enough for Hero, his family is struck by a terrible tragedy, putting on hold both his personal and professional lives. How will it all end?
As per the author's previous books, I was instantly hooked from the very beginning and ended up devouring the whole book in a few hours. One of the things I loved most in this book is that without distracting the reader from the main case, the author dedicates a few chapters to Hero's personal life, giving readers, especially those new to this series, a chance to meet all members of his family. The author balances the story between the fast-paced case and Hero's more relaxed personal life, which sadly doesn't stay relaxed for long. The tragedy hitting his family just adds more tension to the already ongoing suspense and drama taking place in this book. By the end I was left an emotional wreck, wincing, biting my knuckles and trying hard to hold back my tears.
'Double Jeopardy' does not only have a stunning cover. Inside, it's a brilliantly woven, well-written plot brimful of engaging characters, realistic dialogue, suspense, drama, murders, fast-paced action and some very emotional moments. It is a fantastic, thrilling read and I highly recommend it.
With thanks to the author for an ARC of this book which I voluntarily accepted to read and review.
Another fantastic book in the DI Hero Nelson series. Hero is fast becoming a favourite character of mine. I love getting to know more about Hero and his family in each book and in Double Jeopardy Hero’s personal life is also dealt a major blow when his parents are faced with a life or death situation.
Ross Spalding, a successful entrepreneur, life comes to an abrupt, gruesome end one night after leaving his office.
As with all of this authors books, Double Jeopardy is easy and exciting to read and I find myself getting involved with certain characters as if I know them personally.
Another great book from this very busy author, and I look forward to more in this series.
What an absolutely cracker of a read! I can't praise this author enough for the way in which she weaves her plots, so much so that she should be renamed The Deliverer, because she never fails to deliver an absorbing book. This one I couldn't put down from start to finish. I just love the characters of Hero Nelson & his efficient team & the way we get treated to the interaction between them all & an insight into the boss's family life, sad though it sometimes is. I would give this 10 stars if I could & I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who loves crime thrillers & a captivating book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this gritty crime thriller right from the first few pages. The characters were great and the writing style really brought them to life on each page – the story surrounding the main character, DI Hero Nelson was superb and his personal life played out just as much as that of his professional life – I really did feel for him at times. The plot was set at just the right pace to keep me entertained and gripped, it is just the kind of book that I love reading, you can clearly tell it was well researched and executed brilliantly. I’m a massive fan of books in the crime fiction genre and this is up there with some of the best that I have read so far in 2017 – definitely one I’d highly recommend and didn’t hesitate to give it 5 stars – a brilliant and enjoyable read!!
Double Jeopardy by mel Comley. A body is found on a field and it's up to hero and his team. Another body is found and hero has family issues as his parents are in a car accident. This was a fantastic read with brilliant characters. Bought tears to my eyes. Poor hero. I love mel Comley books. 5*. Highly recommended.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Mel Comley Double Jeopardy. Another fast action thriller from Mel, when you see her name on the cover of a book you just know your going to enjoy it. Ross Spalding has everything he needs or so it seems, but it comes to a very gruesome end. This is book 4 in the brilliant Hero series and it's a great addition. 5* 01 August 2017.
I love the Hero series and Mel has done it again with a brilliant story. Mel manages to write in such a way that you feel that you really know the characters & that makes the story more enjoyable for me. I love Mels style of writing and cannot wait for the next book in the Hero series - no pressure!
I always look forward to reading the latest Mel Comley book. It's like getting together with an old friend. This latest book was no different. The wonderful DI Hero Nelson is back investigating the gruesome murder of a wealthy businessman. The body count rises at the same time that Hero has to cope with a life or death situation with his own family. Hero has to dig deep to cope with it all.
I have yet to read a book by this author that I haven't enjoyed and this is no exception. Apart from writing cracking stories, she somehow manages to bring all of her characters to life with details of their personal as well as work lives. Hero now feels like a friend and I was heartbroken for him at times. Another fantastic read.
I'm a huge fan of the Hero series, and this one doesn't disappoint. It's an emotional rollercoaster of a ride as we delve into Hero's personal life and really get to know his family ... I was so involved for a few chapters, I completely forgot he was investigating a crime! The author cleverly brings us back to the case at hand and Hero proves he's the man for the job because, #EveryoneNeedsAHero
So Double Jeopardy is the fourth in the ‘Hero’ series, once again I’m jumping in mid-series with no clue what has happened previously. Thankfully it didn’t matter one iota I was still able to immerse myself in this story. (I have read others by the author)
D.I Hero Nelson (don’t you just love that name!) and his team are investigating the murder of a wealthy business man who seemed to have it all so why would anyone want him dead? After questioning his work colleagues was the motive business or personal?
Hero and his partner DS Julie Shaw seem to have a fraught relationship which isn’t necessarily helped by him offering to put her forward for promotion .. however they have a crime to solve first.
As things hot up and they think they are on the right track Hero faces personal problems. I really liked the way Hero is so engrossed in his family, we get a good insight into his gorgeous wife, sister and parents .. going off on a tangent away from the crime investigation made me realise how much of himself Hero puts into the job.
He is a great character, the down to earth gritty nature of the writing is superb. I could totally relate to them all and by the end I was on tenterhooks. There is a lot of emotion rolled into the ending and I didn’t want to leave these people behind. I’m impressed I could so readily care about these characters that I had essentially just met. As for the crime there were twists and turns which I thought I knew what was happening but I was wrong. Fantastic thriller which I would recommend.
I need to go back and begin the series now just so I can get another fix of Hero .. my thanks to the author and Sarah at Bloodhound books for my copy which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Double Jeopardy is the first novel in the ‘Hero’ series that I’ve read, although it is the fourth novel overall. I was assured this could be read without reading the others, and that is absolutely true. However for those who prefer to know what comes before, I’d encourage you to read the others in the series - Torn Apart (Book 1) and End Result (Book 2).
The setting for the novel is Manchester which is close to my home town. I loved the local feel of it especially when something was written that I recognised, like a landmark, or a particular road. It’s always so exciting to me when that happens!
Okay, so on with the review. Hero Nelson is a hard-working Detective Inspector with a lot on his plate. Juggling a challenging job and a growing family isn’t easy.
When the owner and CEO of a very successful private company is brutally murdered, Hero and his partner, Julie, are in a race to find out what happened before the killer strikes again. The motive eludes them. It can’t be robbery because the victim was found with a large sum of cash about his person, but then if that wasn’t the motive, where is his car? And what does his (if I may say) shifty partner have to do with his death.
The pace of the novel isn’t so fast that you struggle to keep up with goings on, but it does increase towards the climax - as all good novels should, and I found the ending extremely satisfying.
I have Torn Apart (the first novel) on my Kindle, and I’ll definitely be going back and reading it.
Another thrilling read by M.A.Comley, this is one great read off to a brilliant start which hooked me in, and kept me enthralled all the way through. Hero is as always a fantastic character to read about in work life and home life, with some extremely interesting developments in both areas. Yet again, M.A. Comley has packed in so much within the pages, and although part of a series you could read as a stand alone, but benefit from reading all previous novels. Loving the new look cover too....
Another M.A Comley book, yippee. In this book our police hero is actually called Hero. Over the last couple of books we have got to know Hero and his family. In this book Hero and his team have to get to the bottom of a strange murder. The victim was killed a long way from his home/office and his body was burnt after death. The team have a suspect in mind, but he too dies. Whilst trying to unravel the murders Hero has personal problems to deal with. This is a great read featuring old friends.
