Le paradis caché d'Eve Crenshaw

Rate this book

I have to say it - I am more than disappointed in this book. I had such high hopes as I loved the Drama Queen books written by Lee Nichols - those made me laugh and I fell in love with the characters. In Wednesday Night Witches I had a real hard time getting to know the characters, and the italicized writings were just confusing and I ended up skipping them altogether. At the end I flipped through and read them - and I felt they did not add to the story. The ending was VERY predictable for all 4 of the characters (the phrase "how could anyone NOT see that coming" left my mouth more than once). All in all my hopes were up way too high for this one. Just hoping Reconstructing Brigid doesn't let me down.

Pretty good - the story was one that's been done before, but the characters were interesting and it was re-done pretty well. My biggest issue was the perspective shifts of the book - the first person narrator along with the 3rd person following the other two characters really bugged me. Chick lit isn't the time to experiment too much with that sort of device.

Wednesday night Witches (lee Nichols)

When Eve Crenshaw's live-in boyfriend breaks up with her on speaker phone, she leaves Manhattan for Broome Island Maine, to stay with her college friend Natasha. There she meets Natasha's childhood friend Kim, who rumor has it is a witch. The three find themselves becoming the best of friends.

Then one night they go into the cellar and open an old bottle of liquor and each makes a wish. Soon their wishes come true, but they come with a price. Things start to change on the Island and soon they start to wonder if something evil is lurking ,and just how are they all connected to this evil.

Fun read, I would like to read more of Ms. Nichols books.

I just finished this book and am a bit confused as what to write about it. When I first bought it, I thought it was a fun chick lit book from the look of the cover. Then after reading the first half I thought it was a woman's fiction story. Then towards the end it morphed into a horror story. I guess the story just didn't know what genre it wanted to be when it grew up!

This story started out being a keeper, but I changed my mind. I enjoyed reading it but when the story is confused as to what genre it is to be, how is the reader supposed to decide? Plus I feel like I've been duped somehow.

This was light and fun - sort of a less intense and definitely less drawn out scenario quite like Nora Roberts trilogy about witches...

this was cute. A good quick read.

Eve Crenshaw leaves her selfish boyfriend and her teacher's assistant job in Manhattan for a completely different life on Broome Isle, Maine, where her former college roommate, Natasha, lives and works as an artist. Eve is soon offered a job as a full fledged teacher of her own first grade class at the island's grade school, and rents a cottage from new friend, Kim, whose ancestors have lived on the island for centuries and were reputed to be witches. Kim herself just knows things about the island, and after she, Eve & Natasha drink what they believe to be wine from a dusty old bottle found in Kim's basement, all of their wishes begin to materialize. However, other aspects of the island begin to suffer, and the Wednesday Night Witches, as they have dubbed themselves, will need to stand together to stop the darkness that is lurking around them, waiting to take back the island and destroy all that the three women hold dearest in their hearts.

None of the characters came across as all that real. The witch trio were all so cliche that it was pretty painful, from start to end. The mystery of Jack, Johnny, and Garrison was pretty silly. The fact that so much time was spent building up the back-story before anything ACTUALLY took place, and that the witch-trio kept manifesting all these ridiculous powers that they never had any actual idea about (ok, Kim kind of did, being a "hereditary" witch, but the other two were clueless). It particularly annoyed me, the way Natasha's "love-story" came out. I mean, painfully cliche, and poorly written. The climax wasn't even a HOT mess. It was just a mess. I won't be looking for any further books by this author, nor suggesting this one.

I genuinely enjoyed this book! A cute, fun, and quick chick lit kind of read. I liked the characters and it was a fun story but it also lacked a bit. The plot was predictable and honestly didn’t need a demon. The title of the book is cute and I wish it was as a way of making it just a fun group name for the the three women. The book didn’t need anything fantasy wise. 3.6-3.7 stars

Easy read. Mostly light hearted and entertaining. Last few chapters actually moved the plot and I couldn't put the book down. It reminds me a little of the movie Practical Magic. Fun, girly moments and serious witchy stuff.

This was a book that I've had in my collection for several years, but haven't picked it up to read until recently. It was a cute and easy read. The characters were likable and made it hard to put down. The plot was a little flimsy at the end, but loved the twist.

This was an interesting read. My sister bought me this book for Christmas because she knows I tend to be a fan of chick lit, particularly of Red Dress Ink.

The book more or less starts when Eve, a grammar school teacher, leaves her boyfriend standing on the side of the road in NYC after they get in a fight. He's a busy, important person, and her job involves playing with kids all day. She escapes to Maine, where her friend from undergrad, Natasha lives. Later, Eve's boyfriend makes the breakup official, via a speakerphone conversation while he's conducting other business in his office, no less.

Meanwhile, Eve is trying to figure out what to do with her life now. Should she settle down in Maine or suck it up and return to New York? While she's deciding this, she meets Natasha's friend Kim, who is descended from a line of witches (or so she claims). One night, the three women drink an old bottle of, well, something from the wine cellar while making wishes about their future. Suddenly, the next day, their wishes start coming true. Of course, the wishes come at a cost, but they are blithely unaware of this until it's almost too late.

This book ended up being part-chick lit and part-paranormal (albeit very light on this), which I wasn't prepared for. If you like a bit of the sinister mixed in with your chick lit or a bit of "witches going after the Dark Forces" thrown in there, then this is the book for you.

This is NOT the book for you if you get distracted when narratives changes between first and third person. Generally the story was told from Eve's perspective, but every once in awhile, the narrative would change and be told in the third person when following Natasha or Kim.

All in all, this was a fun read with an interesting ending.

This is the kind of quirky fun witch book I just love! My daughter and I have just started watching the "Charmed" TV series (we just finished season one) and this book reminds me a lot of that series. It also reminds me a little of "Practical Magic".
This story is fun, romantic, sexual (but too graphic, even for me!), and not too dark - well maybe a little, at the end, LOL. But all in all it was just great fun.

The character development was great. I loved all three girls! I am not even sure which one was my favorite. I loved how the friendships developed and strengthened throughout the book. I love how they stuck together and helped each other. They were there for each other. This book was about friendship as much as anything else.

And - it takes place on an island off the coast of Maine! How much better can you get? Witches, friends, and Maine - perfect setting for a perfect book.

This book was so funny in spots I was laughing so hard right out loud I had tears running down my face.
Here are a few fun quotes -

"Gregory winced when he saw me.
'I told you,' I said.
'What happened to your hair?'
'The subway.'
'You rode with your head out the window like a dog?"

"Something was nagging at her. The lack of a kitchen? The lack of a boyfriend? The lack of clean laundry? The lack of success? There was a lot of lacking."

"I'd fallen for his boyish charm and confidence, without realizing they were bundled with boyish immaturity and selfishness. He was like a quad eyeshadow compact with only two good colors" -love that one!

I bought this book in the clearance isle a few years back and put it in my book case. It had been collecting dust until I decided to read and go through my books so that I could give away the ones I wouldn't be rereading. The plot sounded interesting, but I quickly became bored. The chapters do not announce that it is changing to a different character’s point of view, which is great. However, the characters and POV’s are so similar that it is hard to differentiate them at times in the early chapters. Heck, it was confusing for a few pages here and there later in the book! Regardless, I liked it enough to keep reading. Then I lost the book. I figured that I’d finish reading it when it reappeared. Fast forward several months and it decided to make an appearance again. I figured that I would get around to it later only to lose the book again! I've concluded that it’s just not meant to be.

I liked the characters even though it kinda reminded me a bit of Witches of Eastwick. Eve leaves NY on a whim and goes to visit her artist friend Natasha on a small Maine island. There she meets Natasha's friend and ex-sister-in-law, Kim. Together the three make magic and unintentionally free a demon. Their wishes come true and it is almost too late when they realize the cost.

The characters are interesting and the story starts off fine. But the climax is rather anti-climactic. And I am not sure I like how everything turned out for the women. The best thing the women got out of the happenings was a sense of empowerment which I liked but I still didnt feel satisfied by the ending

The three female characters were interesting. I would have liked to learn more of the back story. I got the feeling the author hadn't been sure if they wanted to write a paranormal / witch story or a true romance / chick-lit story. While the story was entertaining and enjoyable (love the old coots coffee club at the general story), I felt as though there could have been more meat and potatoes to the story. In some parts, it felt fluffy and at times a bit rushed. I would have to label this a lightweight beach read.

three friends get together and accidentally release a demon. they don't even know they've done it, until cars start crashing and deer get eviscerated and stuff.

hey, don't get the impression that the story is at all dark, because it's actually told in a light and breezy way. in fact, one of the narrative voices is a likable airhead. she made even witnessing an old lady being smashed dead by a falling tree sound not horrible.

so.

three stars.

one for each friend.

It's perfect!!! I love this book. It has everything I want... Maine, cottages, friends and witches!!!! The author describes everything in just enough detail that you feel you are right there, smelling, tasting and feeling what the characters are experiencing. I hate when they over load you with words when describing something... It was perfect!!!! I can't wait to go back to the east coast! Yay for witches!!!

This is very, very deep in the "light bit of confection" area of chick-lit.

The denouement seemed way too easy and simple and I thought the "point" of the book was a little muddled (we shouldn't "wish" for what we want in life; we should make what we want in life happen - but then all the heroines got what they wished for without really having to work for any of it).

But it was an easy, breezy read and I have to admit that I was thoroughly entertained for the duration.

A cute book that was entertaining with a supernatural element that reminded me a little bit of the TV show "Charmed" in tone. It was a light, fun read for the most part with a few things that were a little distracting....The changing point of view of the narrative, and "daydreams" of one of the lead characters was kind of throwing me off. The ending ventured into ridiculous territory, but over all for some reason I liked this book.

I loved this book! I was totally immersed in the whole story. It was like a Practical Magic/Witches Of Eastwick type of vibe, loveable girlfriends with a dark undertone. I'd definitely read it again, around Halloween maybe next time.
My only complaint is when I looked up more by the author none of her other titles sounded all that great and original. Which sucks 'cause I loved this book and really wanted to read more by the author.

This was a fun read: good story, good characters, good writing, and a touch of magic and suspense thrown into the mix. And Lee Nichols has a keen sense of timing and pacing that just keeps you turning the pages. I definitely recommend this to anyone who like a good fairy tale/romance or just a good women's fiction read.

This is a fun light hearted book. I literally read this in about 2 hours at the beach.. it's very much a "beach book" (my favorite kind.) I might not have finished it if I had more to read at the beach. It took me a few chapters to get into. If you are looking for something fun and fluffy, then this is your book!

This book is a fun quick read for anyone who likes chick lit and a little magic in their reading! I enjoyed the friendship of three woman who come together on a small island unknowingly setting loose a evil spirit bent on destroying the island.

It reminds me of Practical Magic, Witches of Eastwick and Charmed rolled into one. I loved it!
