We all know that at some stage in our lives we should read War and Peace and Anna Karenina but do we all have the time and commitment to cope with the 1272 and 964 pages that they respectively fill? The Forged Coupon gives us an opportunity to pick up Tolstoy’s attention to detail and his Christian beliefs in a brief novella.
At just seventy nine pages the book can easily be read in two sessions although I am sure that most readers will take advantage of the Introduction and the useful Extra Material sections which Alma Classics always include.
Part 1 of The Forged Coupon moves along at a pace with a succession of linked persons committing ever increasingly serious crimes. This involves numerous characters, all of course with Russian names which do not always read easily. Hugh Aplin’s Introduction tells us that despite its brevity the book was written over a twenty four year period which does not surprise me because Part 2 has a very different feel to it.
The Extra Material section tells us that Tolstoy read a great deal of Western European literature including Charles Dickens and either by design or accident there are similarities. Like Dickens, Tolstoy explores the world of the lower classes and their struggles to make ends meet. The difference is that, harsh though Victorian life was for England’s lower classes, the average Russian peasant suffered far more with considerably fewer rights. Tolstoy also demonstrates how, by design or ignorance, the life of the poor is affected by the actions of the rich and with the benefit of hindsight today’s reader can clearly see how the seeds of the Russian Revolution were being sown even though Tolstoy died eight years before it occurred.
The other Victorian comparison can be seen through Tolstoy’s hope in a style of Christianity based on love, respect and equality rather than the doctrine and regulation issued by the Orthodox, Catholic and Anglican churches of the period. I really enjoyed this aspect of the book.
My other personal pleasure was to read about Bearer Bonds and the accompanying sheets of Coupons which had to be “clipped” and presented to an agent to obtain the dividend or interest payment. Most UK readers will be unfamiliar with these but I was taken back to a long forgotten routine when I worked as a bank securities clerk.
The Forged Coupon may be short but its message packs a punch. I have awarded four stars.

Tolstoy's take on the butterfly effect. Needing a little scratch to pay off an insignificant debt to a friend, a boy hoodwinks a shopkeeper with a faked line of credit. This is then passed off from one person to another, snowballing in significance and causing much residual havoc. The Forged Coupon is an examination of the lower classes, ala Dostoyevsky. In fact, towards the end, this short story becomes almost Dostoyevsky-esque. I really wanted it to continue on another hundred pages or more!

My last review of the year, just in time for Christmas! I had to make it Tolstoy. I read this novella chiefly because it (part 1 to be exact) is the basis for the movie L'Argent that I planned to watch, it is also a Tolstoyian moral tale, which always goes well with Christmas/Easter. Also this story I listened to on a Somalian prisoner who managed to read Anna Karenina by Morse code: https://www.npr.org/templates/transcr... Really beautiful.
Two students forge a bank note and that begins a hellish karmatic hurricane that ensnares a lot of people. It shows the snowball effect that a little crime can have under the right circumstances, but it also shows how that cycle can be broken through mercy, compassion or faith. I know folks may not care for preachy Tolstoy, but I enjoy it, one can do a lot worse (G.K. Chesterton). I really like Tolstoy's ability to introduce a character so fully in just a paragraph.
Now I can finally devote myself to Homer. Merry Christmas and happy holidays and a happy New Year to all! ¡Feliz Navidad y un feliz año nuevo a todos!

OK, written by Tolstoy, I simply cannot say the writing is bad, and the story does display a knowledge of human behavior.
The novella, in two parts, is written as a parable. It says, loud and clear, that good behavior leads to more good behavior, and bad behavior to more bad behavior. It’s a story illustrating the domino effect. I find this all too simplistic, t-o-o-o-o moralistic and way t-o-o-o-o preachy! It shakes a finger at the reader and says, pay attention, this is the way you must behave. I do not pick up books to be lectured to.
Michael Richards narrates the audiobook I listened to. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the narration. His performance I have given three stars. It’s good.

Of all the Tolstoy short stories/novellas in the collection I have read, this is one of my favourites. It begins when a hard up student uses a forged coupon to pay for goods in a shop. This begins a cascade of deceptions and wrongdoings, affecting more and more people, and leading to ever more heinous deeds - culminating in a murder. In the second part of the story, the murderer from part 1 seeks (and finds) redemption through religion and this too has a cascading effect leading to more good deeds done by others. I thought the story really neatly illustrated how our actions can have such an effect on others and cause many unforeseen consequences. Great stuff.

I'm neither disappointed nor satisfied. Although the novel is engaging and portrays subtle criticism of 19th-century Russian society, I can't say I loved it. I didn't indulge; I only finished what I started. Something isn't right when reading resembles a tolerable responsibility instead of an exciting exploration.
The story begins with a seemingly innocent act of deceit: a little boy forges a coupon to repay a debt to his friend. Such tiny fraud sets off a chain of worsening events, affecting multiple lives. Eventually, the domino effect of coupon forgery leads to a nasty murder. That escalation, though.
Then, the novel takes a boring path. Tolstoy shows his holier-than-thou and communistic side by having the characters fix their flaws and problems through religious revelations and wealth abandonment.
Tolstoy suggests that a divided and corrupt society could flourish in fairness if people turned to God. What if Russians took his advice back then? The world would be unrecognisable.

How such an event of a forgery has a dramatic effect on others and the subsequent chain of events is definitely thought provoking for any actions that we undertake. Tolstoy as a master at getting his point across and this short Novella packs a punch.
There are many different Characters here from differing levels of society and chapters come thick and fast. This serves to highlight the deeply powerful and bitter social divisions in Russia at the turn of the nineteenth Century.
There are 2 parts to the book the first being murders, suicide, impoverishment and incarceration. The second part is mainly about a religious awakening for many of the Characters.
I like the quote “Things happened that no one saw but which were more important than all that people did see.”
Another quick Classic read.

اینکه بال زدن یک پروانه در نقطهای از جهان، میتواند طوفانی را در نقطهی دیگری بیافریند ، کوچکترین رفتار و عمل ما می تواند زمینه بزرگترین و اثربخش ترین، اخلاقی ترین یا خونبارترین رفتارها باشد
یک کوپن جعلی ( چک جعلی) به مغازه داری داده می شود و جریانی از رفتارها همراه خود دارد که تا بی نهایت ادامه خواهد یافت مگر اینکه افرادی پیدا شوند که بتوانند آثار سوء آن را از بین ببرند ( سلسله رفتارهای مبتنی بر علت و معلول را منحرف سازند) اگرچه با این حال ما شاهد مجموعه ای از جریانی خواهیم بود که چه مثبت یا منفی تا ابد ادامه خواهد داشت، اثر را نمیتوان از بین برد ولی میتوان ماهیت مثبت یا منفی بودن آن را تغییر داد.... اولیای دمی که از قاتل در میگذرند یا صاحب حقی که از حق خودش در برابر فرد ضعیف تر گذشت می کنند و حتی قدرت از دست رفته او را بازآفرینی میکنند
پس چه بهتر است که ما زمینه ساز رفتارهای مثبت باشیم تا منفی یا اگر در فرایند اثر پروانه ای قرار گرفتیم با تغییر جهت آن سبب اتفاق مثبت شویم تا منفی همانند نقش ماریا سمیونونا در داستان
در این اثر کوپن جعلی به جای پول داده می شود و یک رفتار بزهکارانه و خلاف اخلاق، زمینه قتل و کشتار می شود

"تربيتُ عَلى أنَ السمواتِ تُفتَح وقتَ المطر، فَصليتُ وكان اللهُ يستجيب، كَبِرتُ وقرأت، فعرِفتُ أن المطرَ ما هو إلا سحابٍ مُتَكثِف، وأنَ السَمَوات لا تُفتَح، مُجرد طَبقة لا تصِل حَتى للفضاءِ الخارجي، فأصبحَت صلاتي هزيلة ومهتزة، وأصبَحَت الإستجابةَ ضعيفةٍ لأن الصلاةَ فَقدت الإيمان، يَومِها فَقَط أدركتُ أن قليل من السذاجةِ يَصلُح أحياناً."

لو حد عايز يعرف يعني ايه أثر الفراشة يقرأ الكتاب ده.
من عمل بسيط عبارة عن تحايل عشان فلوس زيادة لتخريب حياة وقتل وسرقة ونهب ممتلكات وجرائم كتير ، الترابط والربط في حيوات الشخصيات اللي بنقابلهم سريعا سريعا في صفحتين أو تلاتة عشان نشوف تأثير الفعل ده لما وصل لحد عندهم وكان تضاعف اد ايه وأثر فيهم ازاي ربط مبهر صراحة.
غير آراء الكاتب المعروفة في الدين والسياسة طبعا..

This novella contains 17 interlinked crime stories. The crimes range from check-kiting to murder-spree. Tolstoy should have provided a flow chart. The story peters out in the end.

I certainly wasn't expecting a cast of characters this grand when reading the premise but it was a very welcome surprise. Tolstoy unfurls the story like a black flower, each crime giving way to further dissent into moral decline, the destruction of the individual's soul paves way for the decay of the collective. A solid tale, with unexpected twists, and especially poignant on how we are unaware of the way small deeds of evil have ripple effects in the fabric of society.
Whilst Tolstoy writes well on redemption and moral greyness, he is just too blunt and on the nose about it, but maybe it's the small space that didn't allow him to flesh out some characters and their arcs properly. It is Dostoyevsky who reigns as the master of this theme in Russian literature.

Tolstoy unfurls the story like a black flower, each crime giving way to further dissent into moral decline, the destruction of the individual's soul paves way for the decay of the collective. A solid tale, with unexpected twists, and especially poignant on how we are unaware of the way small deeds of evil have ripple effects in the fabric of society.
Whilst Tolstoy writes well on redemption and moral greyness, he is just too blunt and on the nose about it, but maybe it's the small space that didn't allow him to flesh out some characters and their arcs properly. It is Dostoyevsky who reigns as the master of this theme in Russian literature.

به نظرم تولستوی یا تالستوی خیلی پیش از اینکه ان ال پی و نمدونم جذب و راز و این مزخرفات روی کار بیان به قوانین کارما و عمل و عکس العمل نظر داشته و هرچند گاهی به تمسخر گرفته است.نگاه صد و نقیض تولستوی به دین و دینداری رو واقعا دوست دارم یک جورهایی خودمم همین درگیری ها رو دارم.

The stories of Leo Tolstoy are linked by what the French scholar and translator Michel Aucouturier calls Tolstoy's "gift of concrete realisation", and an ever-restless breed of philosophical inquiry – a combination that could produce works of an intensity that surprises even after repeated readings.
Tolstoy's greatest short story, The Death of Ivan Ilyich revolves around the eponymous judge discovering, as he slowly, painfully expires, that his entire life has been a sham, built on bourgeois trivialities and bereft of love. Even at his end his family cannot comfort him – "he saw that no one would feel sorry for him, because no one even wanted to understand his situation" – leaving him to receive succor from Gerasim, the butler's helper. Tolstoy himself often contemplated suicide throughout the latter half of his life, but his fear of death was greater even than his suspicion of the meaninglessness of existence. It has been suggested that Tolstoy calmed himself by reading the Scriptures. Apprehending this adds another layer to the terrifyingly powerful climax of Ivan Ilyich, in which Ivan's rapture ("There was no more fear because there was no more death") does not convince, but jars against his earlier, terrible description of death as "that black sack into which an invisible, invincible force was pushing him".
Tolstoy's understanding of death, informed by his wartime experiences in Silistria and Crimea, seems to me unique in literature. Both visceral and meditative, it attains a sort of frozen horror when he describes the thought processes of serial killer Stepan in The Forged Coupon. This story is divided into two parts. In Part I, schoolboy Mitya is in desperate need of money to repay a debt, but his father angrily denies him assistance. Dejected, under the instigation of a friend Makhin, Mitya simply changes a 2.50 rouble bond coupon to read 12.50 roubles, but this one evil deed sets off a chain of events that affects the lives of dozens of others, when his one falsehood indirectly causes a man to murder a woman at the end of Part I, and then seek redemption through religion in Part II.
Having written the novella in his dying years, after his excommunication, Tolstoy relishes the chance to unveil the "pseudo-piety and hypocrisy of organized religion." Yet, he maintains an unwavering belief in man's capacity to find truth, so the story remains hopeful, especially in Part II, which shows that good works can affect another as in a domino effect, just as evil does in Part I. The depiction of Stepan is particularly fascinating as his character reminds the reader of other Tolstoyan characters who are changed by the power of scripture. His story and the fate of Mitya are keen moments in this set of chain-like stories.

طيب هو الرواية باختصار بتهاجم الكنسية في الوقت دا و تجار الدين عامة الى بيقصدوا يعملوا حاجز بين ربنا و الناس و يحرفوا و يزودوا في الدين براحتهم، و ناقشت أثر العنف ضد الأبناء أو التعنيف عشان أكون أكثر دقة يعني .
الرواية اتكلمت عن الفرق بين الطبقات و المشكلات ما بينهم و طبعا كل دا تحت عنوان النفوس البشرية ..
الرواية في مجملها ناقشت كل دا بتسلسل عظيم ، بمعنى .. ماذا لو أنت ببساطة عملت فعل يبدو دون أهمية فينعكس على ناس كتير جدا و يغير في حياتهم بالسلب أو بالايجاب؟!
المجمل .. الرواية مكثفة، عميقة رغم صغر حجمها، بتناقش أسلوب تربية، مسألة النفس البشرية و الضمير، تجارة الدين، التغير الطاريء على أي شخصية تبعا لميولها للشر أو للخير، أثر الأفعال الى بنشوفها بسيطة في حياة الناس، ظلم الطبقات الفقيرة، أثر الجهل بالعلم أو الدين بمعنى غياب الوعي ..

The way Tolstoy weaved this story is amazing. His theology was wrong but he painted a clear picture of the effects of sin but the lasting change of believing (in what your left wondering?) he falls off. He understood man sins but he implied doing good made you good. Definitely worth a read for the masterful story telling!

رواية قصيرة جميلة وسريعة الايقاع جدا وبها كثير من التكثيف الذي يميز القصص القصيرة
ربما لو كان قدر لتولستوي الحياة اطول بعد كتابتها لطالت وامتدت ل��كثر من ذلك كثيرا
ربما كانت مسودة لرواية طويلة وما يؤيد هذه الاحتمالية انها نشرت بعد وفاة كاتبها
الترجمة جيدة جدا واعجبني حرص المترجم على تشكيل النص المترجم تشكيلا كاملا تقريبا اتمنى ان نزيد اكثر من عدد وحجم مترجماتنا العربية عن الروسية مباشرة دون المرور عبر لغة وسيطة

في هذه النوفيلا الجميلة يظهر واضحا جليا كيف أن من الممكن أن تتم كتابة عمل أدبي عميق المعنى و المغزى بلا أي فذلكة أو َتعقيدات. نوفيلا مباشرة تماما تبدأ أحداثها المكتوبة من حدث بسيط جدا و تافه - بالتأكيد سبقتها العديد من الأحداث فلا يمكننا في حياتنا أبدا أن نعلم نقطة انطلاقة لحدث معين- ، و لكنه يتشعب و ييتضخم و يجذب إليه الكثير من الأشخاص من مختلف الطبقات و الخلفيات في المجتمع الروسي، الغريب أن كل هؤلاء الأشخاص كلما واتتهم الفرصة لارتكاب الشر لم يتوانوا عن ذلك و بالتأكيد هذا صعب الحدوث جدا، و لكن إحدى وظائف الرواية هي دراسة الإمكانيات كلها مهما بدت صعبة التحقق، لذلك يمكننا أن نعد هذه أحدى الإمكانيات، من خلال ذلك يوجه تولستوي نقدا لاذعا للمجتمع الروسي بطبقاته العليا و المعدمة و لقضائه و حكومته و حكامه و بالتأكيد كنيسته، هذه الحلقة المغلقة من الشر و السرقة و القتل تنفك بمنتهى البساطة بفعل واحد بسيط و هو ( الصفح أو المسامحة) من هنا تبدأ الحلقة بالدوران في الاتجاه المعاكس فكما أن أثر الفراشة نقل الشر من هنا ألى هناك فإنه نقل الخير و النبل.
( اغفر لهم فهم لا يعلمون)، المسامحة التي تأتي بالتأكيد من الرؤية الصحيحة لتعاليم المسيح هي الحل الوحيد ليحل السلام بين الجميع حيث أنه لا مجرم يمكننا إدانته كليا كما أنه لا فعل يمكننا أن ننسبه إلى شخص واحد و بذاته، ولا يعني ذلك أنه لا ثواب ولا عقاب و إنما كل شخص إذا اتبع تعاليم المسيح بشكل صحيح و ملأ قلبه بها فإنه سيتلقى عقابه بتأنيب الضمير و سيطلب أن يسدد ثمن ما ارتكبه.
هنا في هذه النوفيلا و كما في كل مواضع مشروع تولستوي الأدبي تتبدى رؤية تولستوي للإنسان كظاهرة اجتماعية و هو ما يخالفه فيه بالتأكيد غريمه الفكري دوستويفسكي الذي يؤمن بفردانية الإنسان و يحمله مسؤولية كل أفعاله و بين هذا و ذاك نمتن نحن للأدباء الروس الذين قدموا أعظم أدبي إنساني يمس شغاف قلوبنا و يتقاطع مع حياتنا بشكل واضح جلي.

غالبا الترجمه قد تسمو بالعمل الي سابع سما وقد تهبط به الي الأرض ،ولكن عندما يتقابل تولستوي بمترجم كبير فمن البديهي أن تخرج الرواية بأبرع صوره لها.
آخر أعمال أديب روسيا الأعظم التي بمثابة وصية له ولأسرته بسبب الخلاف ،حيث كان يريد أن يقوم بتوزيع ثروته علي الفلاحين ،وفي النهاية هرب تولستوي من (هذه الحياة المزيفة) كما قال ومات فقيرا في إحدى المحطات.
هذه الرواية المتشابكة تبدأ بتزوير مستند عن طريق ابن لوالد متسلط ثم بحنث قسم أمام المحكمة لعمليات سرقة لاغتيال ثم القتل.
يصف تولستوي مجتمعه في ذلك الوقت والكنيسة الحاكمة التي كان القديسون يدعون الزهد والتقشف ويلبسون لباسا من حرير.
آراد تولستوي أن يوصل للناس أن الشر مستحيل أن يمتد بحلقات متصله بل لابد وأن تنكسر هذه الحلقة وكانت محور هذه الرواية أو محور أفكاره هي هذه المرأة التي تم ذبحها لم تصرخ ولم تهرب ،بل قالت في ثقة "اعلم أنك بذلك تؤذي نفسك" كأن تسلتوي أراد أن يرمز لها ب "يسوع" الذي غفر لليهود حتي للذين صلبوه لهدف أسمي وأعظم في المستقبل ،وكذلك ماريا التي بجملة واحدة - قامت بكسر سلسلة الإجرام التي بدأت بتزوير السند وانتهت بقتلها هي- زلزلزت كيان هذا السفاح وحولته قديس حقيقي ليس كالقديسين الأخر.
تناولت أيضا الرواية جانب سياسي وهو القيصر الروسي الذي نظر له تولسوتي علي أنه في معزل عن شعبه لا يهتم علي الإطلاق ورمز تلستوي بذلك عندما جعل كل كلام القيصر بالفرنسية وليست بالروسية ،وكأنه غريب عن بلاده!!

В детстве очень любил этот рассказ (или это повесть?). Путешествие фальшивого купона просто поразило меня!!! Одно из моих любимейших произведений у Льва Толстого!!!

Прочитав книгу много лет спустя, я уже не испытал таких сильных чувств как когда-то, но в любом случае очень хорошая задумка!!!! Впервые заметил, что у Leo Tolstoy стали проскальзывать высокомерные нотки. И его отношение к крестьянам мне тоже не нравится, хотя вначале и не замечаешь ничего плохого! Он к ним относиться хорошо, но как к людям другого сорта, постоянно снисходит до них!!! И его интерпретация христианства мне тоже не нравится, хотя она и лучше формального православия!

هل ينتصر الإنسان من أجل ذاته وما يؤمن به، أم ينتصر من أجل تغيير المجتمع؟
أول قراءة لتولستوي وكما هو المعتاد في قراءة الأدب الروسي لا بد من إحضار ورقة وقلم من أجل كتابة أسماء شخصيات الرواية وعمل خريطة لفهم العلاقة بينهم.
السؤال الذي يدور في ذهني الآن هل يستطيع الإيمان أن يفعل كل ذلك؟ ليس الإيمان المجرد كما نرى في العديد من مستخدمي الدين باعتباره مهنة، ولكن الإيمان الذي يجعل الإنسان يحمل القلب السليم؟
الفقر المدقع يغير من الإنسان، وكذلك الكلمة الطيبة تغير من الإنسان، ولكن ماذا نفعل مع كل ذلك الفقر والظلم ومن يبحث عن الخلاص هناك قيصر يعيش في قوقعته المنعزلة بعيدًا عن آلام ومشاكل الشعب؟
قابل الشر بالخير... مكتوب في الإنجيل.

This book is one of my all time favorites! It's short, sweet, and to the point. A great and twisted plot and a real lesson on materialism, the love of money and how greedy we really are underneith...but how virture, honesty, and the love of our fellow man always and forever will outweigh these shortcomings. This is a great short read for those who love Russian literature.

داستان پسری که از پدرش پول تو جیبی بیشتری میخواهد تا قرضش را بدهد ولی پدر عصبانی می شود و به فحش می کشد و پول نمی دهد. پسر همراه با یکی از دوستان یک کوپن را جعل می کند و کارش راه می افتد. گیرنده کوپن که می فهمد جعلی است آن را به کس دیگری قالب می کند و همینطور گلوله برفی پیش می رود بزرگتر می شود تا این که در جایی ورق بر می گردد و... دل ها متحول می گردند

The Forged Coupon is a story that is implored by a forged coupon and how it made its way through various people, influancing their lifes and, like aweb, these people influanced the lives of others.
It spands through a handful of years and follows various POVs, with a clever switch from one character to another, always in a third person narration, and a quick pace, that is aided by short chapters.
And yet, and even though the begining was strong, towards the ending I found myself being confused by all those characters and who's who and who they were to begin with. But, Tolstoy is a master in storytelling, so this novella was not disappointing.
It spands through a handful of years and follows various POVs, with a clever switch from one character to another, always in a third person narration, and a quick pace, that is aided by short chapters.
