New York Times bestselling author Mary Engelbreit presents The Bedtime Book, a beautifully-illustrated picture book that pairs sleepy time text with Mary’s beloved, timeless art. From endearing poems and snuggly stories to sweet blessings and precious prayers, each page of The Bedtime Book features ways for you to read your little one to sleep.
Mary Engelbreit grew up studying the illustrations in the vintage storybooks of her mother’s childhood, and she developed a unique style that harkens back to those simpler times. Mary’s distinctive images have made her a celebrity to millions, who eagerly snap up gift items, calendars, books, fabrics, and more.
Mary’s New York Times bestselling The Night Before Christmas is part of the holiday tradition for families across the country. Other beloved additions to a child’s first bookshelf are her New York Times bestselling Mary Engelbreit's Mother Goose and Mary Engelbreit's Nursery Tales, which are perfect companions to this volume.
It has so many bedtime prayers and Christian themed poems and then it has to throw in gender confusion??!
A poem entitled "What Will Tomorrow Bring" first addresses little boys: "Goodnight, young prince; the day is done." It has a few rhyming stanzas and then asks the little boy what he'll be tomorrow: "A circus star, a queen or king?" Queen?
The next page does the same thing; it addresses little girls ("princesses") and asks them what they'll be tomorrow too. Their list includes a king. Ugh.

With each review, I provide Content Considerations, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. I've long been a fan on Mary Engelbreit's whimsical art style. Her color palette and darling characters draw the viewer in. The Bedtime Book combines Mary's artistic talent with beautiful verses to make a charming book for children.
The theme is bedtime and that's when we tried it out. Honestly, I'm not sure who enjoyed it more . . . granny or grands! It was nice to snuggle in and read through the book. The little rhyming verses were easy to say and the pictures provide so much discovery. I feel like I see something new in the details each time we read it.
The Bedtime Book is a hardback so it would make a lovely gift for a new baby or a special little one. It's one of those beautiful books that you won't tire of reading over and over.

A sweet, whimsical book filled with rhythmic verse and Mary Engelbreit's signature illustrations -- sure to create pleasant dreams for your little ones once you tuck them in tight for the night!
I've never personally been a big fan of the style of illustrators such as Jan Brett or Mary Engelbreit.
It's not that I don't appreciate their immense talent, but just that I tend to favor the silly and simple more than the vintage or intricate.
But I may just have to re-evaluate things, now that this book has joined our home library.
This book is a delight -- and it's making me reconsider everything from my taste in movies to novels to decorating preferences because who knows what other amazing things out there I've just been dismissing all this time?
I've written about our favorite bedtime books before, but I can already tell that this title will now be joining that collection!
The text is a mixture of short stories, poems, prayers and blessings that is only enhanced by Mary Engelbreit's timeless art.
This book just screams gift to me -- bedtime stories are always a great choice to give to a family and although you might not be inclined to share it with households no longer practicing a bedtime story ritual, I know several grown-ups that would love to have this sweet book sitting on their bookshelf!
(Besides its sturdy hardcover binding, the dust jacket is decorated with embossing and spot gloss -- making it a perfect addition to a coffee or bedside table in a home decorated in this type of classic style.)
I received a free copy of this product as a member of Zondervan's Z Blog Squad in exchange for writing a review. All opinions are my own.
My time with littles is long since past. My youngest, Amy, is now fifteen going on sixteen. Still, the draw of a good storybook is strong. I look forward to the day of grandlittles snuggling up for a story with grammy, but that's still several years in the future.
As a substitute, my dear Amy cuddled up on the bed with me to enjoy this book as a read aloud. After all, one cannot review a storybook without reading it aloud! She enjoyed it, too, I think.
This is not actually a storybook, but a collection of poetry that can be read in a sing song fashion—quite a fun way to read to children actually. One part I even sang.
I do love that God is a central part of the narrative.
As expected, with Mary Engelbreit, the illustrations are on a par by themselves. No one else I've found comes close to the whimsical joy found in her illustrations. She has a creativity and a fun to her pictures that are unmatched. I've never been disappointed by one of her books.
This book does have one two page spread that did disturb my daughter and I a bit. In it, there are several little monsters all tucked into bed with the child. They were under the child's bed and were scared. After they were all tucked in, they were no longer afraid. The monsters, while "cute" also could be considered scary by little ones. I would recommend you look at this first prior to reading the book to a young child. Yes, I was the protective mama. I just thought you should know.
I received this book from the publisher for free for review purposes. My opinion is my own.

My Review:
The Bedtime Book, is a sweet lovely book written in typical Mary Engelbreit fashion. It takes all things bedtime and turns them into the perfect read aloud for the snuggle-time at bedtime. With all the sweet words and pictures this book will help your little one drift off to dreamland way faster than any book ever could.
I loved the complete version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the illustrations of the woodland creatures are just precious. This book is for ages 4-8, but really it can be a great read aloud for younger ages, as well. This book is a combination of rhymes, fair tale type poems and little quips that children have enjoyed for years and will for years to come.
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author. All opinions are my own.
The Bedtime Book illustrated by the very talented Mary Engelbreit will be your child’s go-to book when the sun goes down and sleep beckons. Filled with whimsically detailed illustrations of creatures of all types, the poems, prayers, and stories all focus on the process of bedtime. I loved this book! The pace is slow and easy; the pictures sure to engage your child’s imagination. My favorite in the collection is titled Counting Sheep, a story sure to induce giggles and smiles. Perfect for snuggle time with your child or grandchild! The Bedtime Book is a great edition to your family library or the just right gift for the special child in your life.
Highly Recommended.
Audience: children ages 4-8.

Filled to the brim with her trademark illustrations, this Picture Book take bedtime reading to another level. It's the perfect good night read for those too young for longer tales but still desirous of mom, dad, or other older-than-they-are-person to read to them. Some rhymes are familiar while others are completely new, but they share the common threads of peaceful dreams, snuggly nights, and the promise of a new and glorious day.
The book was okay. Some of the stories are cute. Being published by Zondervan, youd assume it is safe for Christian families, but the whole political correctness of Good Prince....will you be a Queen or a King? Or goodness princess.....will you be a queen or a King? Was a bit off setting. I had to go back and relisten to it. I understand that children like to imagine and play but for a "Christian" book? No. All the other stories are cute.
Gorgeous bedtime book to share with your kiddos! Thanks to Zondervankidz for sending an ARC of this book. I love the sweet rhymes, songs, poems--reminds me of what my own mother used to read me before bed every night, and the illustrations are incredible. Buy this one!
