Rob Roughley lives in the North West of England (God's coal bunker, the land of the wedding cake made by placing three meat pies on top of one another and whippets on lengths of string)
He is the author of eight crime/thriller novels featuring DS Lasser. The novels are set between the run down streets of a northern town and the beautiful yet desolate west Pennine moors.

However, if you prefer your characters to be flawed, with a sprinkling of dandruff and old acne scars, the plots to be laced with dark humour, then give them a try.

Well this is a bit of a win, win, situation because although this is Book 1 in the new Plymouth series, Plymouth is also a tremendously well known character that pops up periodically in the super DS Lasser books. (The ink is already drying on number 15, not that I am drooling or anything). I was so excited about this book because Robin Roughley has created a real top notch psycho hit man that makes this lady and a lot of others weak at the mention of his name. Plymouth has gained his own unique groupies.
At 34 Plymouth has learnt how to blend, just as well because with his white hair, piercing blue eyes and model like physic he is more than eye catching. So it isn’t long before he has a very flattered hotel receptionist, Bethany, by his side treating her to the very best in sophistication and now with the ability to just be a couple rather than a lone man. This gives him access to far more places to blend in at while working.  Plymouth had been hired to do a job but there are also people out there to hunt him down and not all of them are on the same side. He is always focused on a kill but there will always be collateral damage.
When there are so many bad guys then police involvement is definitely on the cards. Abe Mathews has been hunting down Plymouth for the last 5 years and he has never been this close before. What Mathews saw all those years ago haunts him, he wants justice for a dead family. There is also DI Fay Ferry and John August. I am still not sure of Fay, she is a very in your face kind of impulsive woman that can only see a target not the danger for her or anyone else. Then there is John August, he is a really nice guy and sort of watches over Fay. They balance each other out pretty well.
This a cracking story and perfect introduction to what makes Plymouth tick. It sort of gives you a taster of the cool, calm and collected killer in the first chapter, then establishes the other characters a little before wakening all of your brain cells to new methods of causing physical pain and eventually death for victims. There is far more to Plymouth than you first think. A brilliant read and ready for more. Robin Roughley is doing what he is best at, mayhem, mystery and murder. Excellent!

First book in a new series featuring Plymouth. I've waited for a long time to start reading this book and now is the time. Plymouth is a brilliant character and makes you like bad guys. I never wanted this book to end it was so captivating roll on book two. This book is the best I've read this without doubt

Bit disappointed.

I am a big fan of Robin Roughley and loved the DS Lasser series. I am sure I am not alone when I say that some of the best parts of that series were the stories that involved Plymouth. He is the archetypal villain that we love to hate, at think of him as a mash up between James Bond, American Psycho and Jack Reacher. An intriguing and beguiling charchter that really pulls you in.

With all that in mind you can imagine my delight when I came across this new series with Plymouth having the starring role. Unfortunately I feel disappointed and this book, for me didn't live up to my high expectations.

I found the story slow and to and it hard to keep my mind from wandering. I think for me the supporting cast of charachters really let the book down. Fay!!! Grrrr... I found her immensely irritating, with her temper tantrums and over the top action girl attitude. She came across as weak, entitled and frankly for all her bluster, I found at no part was there any evidence that she had the ability to back up or excuse her behaviour. She contributed little and pouted and stamped her foot a lot. I found her to be unrealistic and irritating. Ok rant over.

In general I just don't think its of the same standard as the previous series. The charachters were lack luster and the plot just didn't flow.

This is just my opinion and others may see it differently and maybe if I hadn't read the DI Lasser series, my opinion would be different.

I'm also curious to know the timeline for Plymouth? I made the assumption that this new series follows on from the Lasser series. Maybe the next book will clear that up and I will be reading it, there's defiantly a whole lot more to come from Plymouth and I am still a fan x

I haven’t read any DS Lasser books - yet, so this is my first introduction to Plymouth. However, I have just finished Axe to Grind, and there were too many similarities for me to give this book 5 stars. As I expected, there was fast action, a fascinating ‘misunderstood’ anti hero in the shape of Plymouth, lies and deception and twists and turns. There was also, unfortunately, a deeply irritating police character, who I just wanted to shut in a cupboard until the end of the story. Apart from that and a bit of a McGuffin of a plot( spoiler alert: the scientist hadn’t found anything!) I enjoyed the journey and am looking out for no.2.

Enigma/ vigilante

Anyone that's read the lasser series by Robin roughley will have already come across Plymouth I thought he was maybe a vigilante but as he sometimes kills innocent people that get in his way I agree with others that maybe enigma describes him better I won't give any spoiler's but this is a very compelling read and the making of a best selling series five stars from me

A great introduction to a new series of books from Robin Roughey.

Plymouth, the white haired nemesis of DI Lasser in the series of books about the gritty detective. This story focusses on Plymouth and his quest for his own brutal form of justice.. I am looking forward to the next book.....

The tension in this is never ending throughout at times I could hear my heart beating as we reached the conclusion this killer has a goal although his methods are extreme it's adds to the mystery you'll either love him or hate him but theres no doubt he'll get the job done this is a page Turner that'll keep you up late

Excellent book of its genre,i.e. killers and cops. Intricate well sculpted plot with complicated twists and turns. Book was unputdownable, and raced along. I was glad when Plymouth left the Laser series, but as a main character ,he was almost believable..One problem. I could not stand the Kay Ferry angry, rude cop, how did anyone tolerate her.? Keep writing Robin.

Great book typical of Robyn Roughley

I had just finished all of the ds lasser books and panicked then spotted this! Same fast paced and action packed that I loved and I do love Plymouth character too. However...I'm not sure why but I was reading the first half in a bit of an American accent ha ha. It just seemed to read that way I don't know why... but it was a good book.
OMG...what the hell do I read now??? Help!!

Overly gristly but good plot

I stopped reading the Lasser series because the violence was too detailed, despite the otherwise well written and plotted stories. This book was no different.

Brilliant

All I can say is, when is the next instalment? It was good to get an insight into Plymouth, the man. I've always liked the man. He has good morals. The policewoman I could do without. Whinging and whining. Good job Robin.

Loved it!

I am a great fan of the author and his series, Lasser, where is we first meet Plymouth.

I am thrilled that "Plymouth" has his own series! He's not someone you'd want to meet if you're a creep, but if you need help, he's brilliant!

A nice surprise

Wasn’t sure how I felt about Plymouth as a stand alone character, however, quickly settled to the other side of things and really enjoyed how the author kept both sides of the story going really well. Thanks

I was keen to read this book as I really like the Plymouth character in the Lasser series books. I struggled at first as it was quite a story to get your head round. But the book got better and better, classic Plymouth marmite. I'm looking forward to reading the 2nd book now.
