The Beacon Hill Sorcerer #2

The Necromancer's Dilemma

Rate this book
Even love can die without trust.

Angel’s brother, Isaac, has returned home, and the pair begin to make slow and awkward attempts back to each other. Learning how to be a brother to a grown man instead of a parental figure has Angel adjusting his behaviors and habits, and Isaac still remains a mystery. Was it merely entering adulthood that turned Isaac away from an overprotective Angel, or does Isaac carry a secret that will keep them from finally being a real family?

Daniel Macavoy, Angel’s new apprentice, is torn between his bond with Angel and the grasping machinations of his father. Dealing with a traumatized apprentice with dangerous holes in his magical education, saving Daniel may be harder than Angel first thought—especially since the biggest problem is not revenge, but guilt.

The one shining beacon in his life is Simeon, Elder vampire of Boston’s only Bloodclan. Four hundred years old and sexy as sin, Simeon is warrior and sage, patient and cunning. The strength Angel draws from Simeon’s devotion and the newborn mate-bond between them is steadfast and true…and the fount of death magic that animates the undead lord places Angel in the midst of a power struggle for control over himself, his lover, and his family.

Through it all, Angel is beleaguered by the unwanted attention of a troll-hybrid, the adventures of a dragon in the city, and a serial killer has decided to hunt the back alleys and midnight streets of Boston.

Any books I have reviewed are my own opinions and done so without malice. I won't review a book anymore if I can't give it 3 stars or higher. Most of my reviews are based upon how a book makes me FEEL. Entirely subjective and personal. Exceptions are in cases of plagiarism and intellectual property theft or a massively horrible formatting job or erroneous content (ie the title and blurb don't match the interior.)

Well this was improvement from book 1, that’s for sure.

And while I didn’t love this as much as I had hoped, I did enjoy it, which is already something better than the first book.

Some of the issues I had with The Necromancer's Dance are issues I had with this: it feels like there is still a lack of relationship development and character development, but I will give it to Sheena Jolie for doing a better job with world-building. The ending is a kicker, leaving off on a cliffhanger that makes me want to start book three as soon as I can, and we learn more about Angel and his family but also Simeon. There is more subtle information on the historical context of the Salvatores, as well as the Vampire clan of Simeon’s history. While it feels like there could’ve been more, I’ll have to blame it on the fact that the story is short, sadly. I do think if it were longer, there would have been more room to continue exploring the much-necessary, missing backstories, both for Angel and Simeon, but mostly Angel, as he is the main protagonist and who we follow through the most.

The relationship between Angel and Simeon is growing but…it feels a little too perfect. Simeon is a little too perfect too, and I think that’s what makes the relationship a little…boring. Don’t get me wrong, I love him as a character, but I think it really takes away from a needed tension to help make the relationship more realistic. It’s as if the two are that perfect married couple who somehow don’t fight, have no issues with each other, communicate very well, and are not worried about anything involving their relationship. Again, don’t get me wrong, all of these things are what we might even associate as being ‘relationship goals,’ but for their different dynamics, attitudes, and personalities, I would’ve expected a little more tension in the relationship that causes the two to clash here and there. It’s hard to find complexities in the relationship. I’m a fan of their dynamics, and as I said in an update, they feel like a black cat x golden retriever couple. Angel is grumpy, grouchy, pouty, and hates almost everyone, but deep down inside he wants and craves care, love, affection, and slowly but surely shows love to others. He goes out of his way to protect those he cares for, all while pretending he’s mad about it. On the other hand, Simeon is incredibly patient, understanding, and overall more vibrant. That said, their relationship is lacking a little bit of spark. Because they’re already together, it’s difficult for the other to add tension, but this doesn’t mean it’s impossible. However, I thought the author was missing that necessary tension to make the relationship more believable, as Angel and Simeon felt like they had been together for years instead of just months. We’re still learning about them, so they are as well, which means there are details missing about them that makes me wonder what will it take for them to break a little. As much of a vanilla reader I am, for a character like Angel who had never fallen in love before, had a relationship, and is still struggling on his relationship with his brother, it’s a little difficult to understand how the two are doing everything well. I mean, perhaps, the author intended to make the relationship this way. And honestly, that’s perfectly fine, but it’s not my preference, so I can’t just ignore that it did bore me a little.

I’m also not a fan of side characters getting their own POVs when it isn’t thsir story. In this case, we get the POV of Daniel and Isaac. Adding Simeon’s made sense, as dual POV is always better for me, but adding those of Isaac and Daniel doesn’t help. With the story already being short as it is, it takes away even more potential tension and depth for the main characters and relationship.

I have to give it to this author for their amazing writing. Like its predecessor, I could envision the scenes playing out in my head as I was reading. It felt like I was watching an adaptation in my head, all while still reading and imagining it myself. The author does a fantastic job at providing enough key details and descriptions enough to make the scenes imaginative. There is enough text provided to see what the scene is playing and giving, which makes the reading experience all the more exciting and fascinating, as it allows us as the readers to have a picture in the head. The imagination is fairly easy to do.

There’s an aspect of a growing family here, with Angel and the rest of the gang–Simeon, Isaac, Daniel, and even Eroch the dragon (who is now one of my favorite characters of this series). His relationship with his brother, Isaac, is growing, but it also takes its time and isn’t where it used to be. This was in a more realistic sense, as it shows the two are still unsure about each other because of Isaac’s decisions in the past and how Angel treated him as a child and not a brother. I’m really hoping we see more growth of Isaac and Daniel, but I also hope Simeon shows more of his potential as the book progresses because it feels like everything is on Angel’s shoulders at this moment. It’s as if he’s bound to save everyone and get rid of everyone's issues.

I still love Angel as a character. Whether he presents to you as a jerk or not is up to interpretation and debatable. I think he’s a refreshing guy. He has a no-given-fucks attitude, an insane necromancer who knows he’s good at what he does. It sucks a little that we still don’t know much about his learning experience and how he became as good as he is because of the brief information we have of his father and mentor, but I’m able to shrug it off more easily. I had an issue with how he ended up overpowering Master Batiste, to the point where he held him and hexed him. It’s hard to accept this as something Angel just does because the Master isn’t just an average Vampire, but we know he is one of the most feared, deadly, and powerful creatures, yet he had almost no advantages over Angel. However, Angel is still human, and we see that in other fighting scenes, where he isn’t able to take just everyone down. His mortality is shown and obvious. His necromancy doesn’t make him invisible or protect him from everything. Angel remains to be someone deadly for those he loves, especially Simeon, Isaac and Daniel.

Once again, like the first book, this had potential but missed a lot in its execution. It had a little more than what book 1 offered, but was still lacking in what was originally missing. I’m not sure how the third book will do better, as it’s kind of hard to believe Angel and Simeon can get anything else other than perfect, especially as the next books aren’t focused on them. I’m still looking forward to it, and I’m really excited to see more of Batiste and Isaac, as well as see more of Daniel and learn about Rory, now that we’ve officially met him here.

Third re-read: 04.08.2021
Simeon and Angel has quite the healthy relationship. I adore them together.

Second re-read: 17.11.2019
A quick re-read to be fully up to speed for the reading of book 4, that I have yet to read.

Re-read: 01.07.2019
In book two we get more POVs; Simeon's, Isaac's and Daniel. And then of course we still get the main POV of Angel. This helps getting to know the family more closely, but Isaac is still keeping us readers at bay. To me, he still seems like the angry kid who hates the world, but still loves his brother some fierce, but having a hard time showing it. Angel and Simeon's relationship grows stronger and deeper, and it's beautiful to watch/read their love. While this book isn't as good as the first one, it's still quite enjoyable.

Other Characters:
Isaac Salvatore (23), Angel's little brother. A sorcerer, just like Angel, and his affinity is for fire.
Dame Mildred ‘Milly’ Fontaine (anywhere from her early 40s to 60s), Angel's teaching partner and friend/mom-figure. Milly’s affinity was for air, the wind, and weather-magic.
→ Detective James O’Malley, Angel’s liaison on the Boston Police Department.
Benjamin Stone, Milly’s ex-husband and troll-hybrid.
Alfred Ballacree, a creepy medical wizard.
→ Lord Cian Brennan, the fae that
→ Detective Grant Collins. The Collins hates the Salvatores, most of them are in the BPD. The Collins are related to the Macavoys, the family that led the Salvatore's enemies in the Blood Wars. Most of the Macavoys went to prison, but the head of the family Leicaster Macavoy, and his son Daniel (only 10 or so at the time) only got was a slap on the wrist for not controlling his people better. Angel claimed Daniel Macavoy (20 now) as his apprentice at the end of book one.
Gregory ‘Greg’ Doyle, Isaac's best friend and sometimes lover. Killed by Deimos (a vampire and a traitor to his clan that resulted in Angel's family's death; dead) in book one.
August Remington, a sorcerer and Angel's old mentor and his father’s best friend. Got killed in book one by Deimos.
Constantine Batiste (1000), the Master of Boston. Simeon is his oldest child.
William Bridgerton, newest clan member and Elder.
Eroch, Angel's familiar.
“When we get home, I’m going to fuck your tight little arse, hard and deep, in every fucking way imaginable. I will make you scream my name and beg for more. When you’ve cum so hard you want to pass out, I’m going to work you back up, and fuck you until your mind cannot process anything but pleasure and your body answers to me alone.”

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*An alright second book*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

First read review:
We're back with the only necromancer in all of Boston Angelus ‘Angel’ ‘Sorcerer Salvatore’ Raine Salvatore (apparently 29, though I thought he was 30 but he doesn't turn 30 until the bonus read in the end) and Elder and vampire, Simeon ‘Celt’ (over 400 years old). They are now ‘bonded’, though not fully yet, but getting stronger. This time around Angel has accepted a case about a serial killer who's not easy to catch.
Simeon was at times odd, even for Angel. The undead vampire lord was four-hundred-years old, a warrior and cunning predator. Yet the fact he was washing dishes from a meal he couldn’t eat, and that he even cooked the meal, gave Angel a warm, almost fluid sense of sweet pain and affection. Awe. He felt awe. Simeon was awe-inspiring. Angel had spent his life alone, and even expected to remain that way forever, never looking for a relationship or a partner in the romantic sense…and yet Simeon filled that role so perfectly, so smoothly, that Angel had a sneaking suspicion that Simeon had been working on getting him to accept him since the moment they met, over two years ago now.

There's also Angel's apprentice, Daniel Macavoy (20) who is hurt emotionally and Angel's brother Isaac Salvatore (23) who is hiding something. Full of action, love and supernatural creatures, The Necromancer's Dilemma was quite interesting and really enjoyable. However, I kept looking for something more. Hopefully we'll get whatever that is in the next book...
Simeon leaned down, and kissed Angel’s brow. “Is breá liom tú,” Simeon whispered over Angel’s skin before kissing him again.

Angel and Simeon are epic AF! They’re easily among my top-five fave supernatural couples in M/M fantasy/paranormal romance.

Himes has created quite the memorable pairing in sorcerer x vampire lovers Angel and Simeon. Their romance is intensely passionate and romantic and downright swoon-worthy at times, and when shit hits the fan and life threatening events start encroaching on this mated pair, my heart quickens and I start to panic, much like the characters themselves, because the idea that either could be hurt or worse is just unacceptable.

I enjoyed the first story in this M/M urban fantasy series a great deal, but I can honestly say this sequel was even better. With the characters now established and the world building solid and expanding, this sequel dived in pedal to the metal, starting off strong and keeping a smooth, yet thrilling pace throughout, as Angel and his found family race to stop the latest supernatural threat to Boston.

There were a couple of heart stopping moments where serious character harm was a little too close for comfort, but even though these scenes took months off my life, I appreciated the exciting, action-packed plot and how it unfolded, upping the ante at every turn.

It must also be said that the secondary characters are really coming into their own, especially in terms of Angel’s brother Isaac, who I struggled with in book one, and Baptiste, the ancient vampire master who now has his eye on tasty young Isaac. Their interactions have been limited so far, but there was so much packed in there that their future story will be one I won’t miss, that’s for sure!

As far as urban fantasies go, this series is definitely one of the best I’ve read, and not just in M/M romance. The characters are all strong, intelligent, and emotionally complex, the world building is comprehensive, the romance is all-consuming, and the presence of a variety of supernatural creatures and beings really does add to making this one hell of a fun read.

This was a great sequel and Angel and Simeon just go from strength to strength as their bigger story unfolds. I, for one, can’t wait to see what lies in store for these two in the next instalments.

Read #2: March 2024

Still as thrilling and romantic as the first time.

It’s such fun re-visiting favourite characters and experiencing their story through a new, knowing lens. I honestly forgot how early in the series the high fae twins came into play and I was like a giddy school girl just thinking about what’s to come for these great additions to the already stellar supernat cast.

Angel and Simeon still get all the stars for their once-in-a-millennia romance. So, so romantic. 🥰

I really really hate S.J. Himes now .. 😂😂😂

Why would you let me leave hanging like that? The whole book has been incredible. I really really loved the whole read and this second book is even better than the first one. So many unanswered questions from book one are solved and I'm very happy that the mate bond between Simeon and Angel has finally completed.

The story line is very intriguing and beautiful. However, after reading this book, I can't help but longing for the love stories about Fae. And I know the Bastite is only a side character but I really really wanna see him get his own HEA too preferably with Issac. 😁

I really can't wait for the third book of this series. I read the intro to that book and I can't help but wonder what would happen again when the high court of sorcery comes to the states and try to charge Angel with many felonies.

Really can't wait for book three.
Well deserved 5 stars

4 Hearts!

I must say that this is fast becoming a favorite, showcasing a top notch urban fantasy that boasts sorcerers, vampires, trolls, fae lords, and last but not least, a squee worthy, small, but spunky dragon. This continues to play on my nostalgia for when I gobbled up series like Sookie Stackhouse, Anita Blake, and Mercy Thompson. If you liked those stories, I don’t think you’ll have any complaint about this at all.

Basically, this is the continuation of the life and times of Angel, new mate to elder vampire Simeon. Their bond is a bit tenuous, slowly evolving and gaining strength, not quite permanent and solidified. Such a bond between a necromancer and a vampire has never been formed, and it’s sure to have unknown repercussions and consequences. As Angel and Simeon deal with their amazing new abilities that definitely increase their status, such developments also set them up as targets for all sorts of unwanted attention. It doesn’t help when their lives and powers are further tested as humans, and supernatural alike, start showing up brutally and ritualistically murdered, suggesting a threat with evil, dark intent. Of course, they’re the only ones capable and possibly powerful enough to address such a formidable foe.

What I enjoyed the most was the additional world building, the exploration into Angel’s abilities, and don’t forget, the evolving relationships he has with not only Simeon, but also with his younger brother, Isaac, and his new apprentice from a rival clan, Daniel. This was full of magical action and adventure, with some really yummy claiming smex. No complaints here!

Again, like its predecessor, Necromancer’s Dance, this was narrated by Joel Leslie. I admit he is not my favorite narrator, as he brings very over the top interpretations and accents to all of the characters, inducing the occasional eye roll, brow raise, and wincing at his various dramatics. However, thankfully the powerful and engaging storytelling overshadows the negatives of the audio, and I eagerly look forward to the next book! SJ Himes can’t write fast enough!!

Thanks to the author/publisher for the audio in exchange for a honest review

🥰🥰❤️🔥

Reread April 2021

Still a winner!

Reread November 2018

Still love it...even though it's only been a few months since I read it last lol.

Reread May 2018

I love this series and I really hope book 3 is out soon. There’s some unresolved issues that need addressing!

Originally read November 2017

This was a continuation of Angel and Simeon's story but really, it's about a lot of characters finding their way in this supernatural world and coming into their own. As always, I wish we had more actual "couple" time but it didn't bring down my enjoyment. The story and mystery are interesting enough to keep me invested. I just love them as a couple so much I want some more intimate moments between them. I really enjoyed getting some different POV's this time as well.

So far, I have loved everything of S.J. Himes' that I've read. I'm looking forward to Daniel and Issac's stories. It seems they both need some love badly. And can I just say WTF with the ending? I NEED book 3 straight away.

When it comes to pnr reads, I'm more of a werewolf kind of gal. But Simeon puts the S in sexy and has me warming up to vampires. 😁

Is there anything more adorable than a pet with personality? I know, I know...Eroch would be offended because he is not a pet. I totally want an Eroch of my own...attitude and all.😍😂

I'm really enjoying this series, and the cast of characters are wonderful! 👍🏽

And it was fabulous again. How could I have forgotten about Eroch, who, tbh, steals the show in quite a few scenes?!!! As for Angel and Simeon ... swooning hard.

original review

Sigh. What a treat.

Magical.

Epic.
Amazing.

It really ticks so many favourite boxes:

- Fast paced action!You hardly have to time to breathe between plot developments.

- Two badass, as cute as hell MCs who are hugely powerful on their own, but make an unbeatable team together. I’d never thought I’d find a vampire draining blood so massively attractive, LOL.

- Angel’s magic is mesmerizing. I really adore that guy.

- Simeon’s protectiveness and selfless love turn me into a gooey puddle every single time!

- These guys are super hot together. Their chemistry is crackling, and their power exchange, magical, otherworldly and in the bedroom is breath taking.

- Fabulous relationship development.

- Eroch, the mini dragon, is the cutest. He makes me smile and coo every time. *a delivery of pigeons is on its way* What a fabulous development for his character in the bonus story at the end! Go, little dragon, go!

- Super secondary characters. Can’t wait for Isaac’s and Daniel’s book!

Mostly – the author’s imagination seems limitless. So much thought went into this, so much detail, so much depth.

Sorry, no time for more.
Heading for book 3.

There are some things that simply get better with time. My favorite pair of jeans, a nice bottle of wine, and the love between a sassy necromancer and his vamp. Ha! It’s true. One of my absolute favorites in a spectacular series is when bonds settle into place and love grows stronger and brighter with each story. Not much time has passed since the first book but one thing is for certain, Angel and Simeon’s love. We follow them as they embark with tentative but solid steps into their new relationship and of course, fight battles along the way. The secondary cast is pulled into the limelight and we discover more about Angel’s cobblestone family. His business partner, Milly, who is more like a mother to him, is attacked and Angel sees red. No one messes with his family. Human or otherwise, they will pay. Sadly, this isn’t the last time one of his loved ones need rescuing. To top things off, his powers are going wonky and he’s struggling to control the surge building inside him. My new favorite necromancer dances his way from one predicament to another and I was more than eager to tag along. Shall I tell you a bit more?

What's to like: In regards to the world-building, the heavy lifting has been done. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have new surprises along the way. Between a horrid troll, Daniel’s dreadful family and impressive fae I was entranced the entire time. There’s a serial killer on the loose and they have begun to target supernats. Murdered weres and missing vamps leave a trail that takes us on a heart-racing mission. I nearly fell from my seat from massive swooning when Angel presents Simeon with a ‘gift’. Oh sweet mercy, they are too much. And I love it.

What's to love: Angel and Simeon. If I have been charmed or bewitched please don’t let it stop. Their reality fills me with bubbles of glee and I’m addicted to their drama. Yes, Angel tends to have drama knock at his door but between his awestriking powers and the endless bank from his beloved, they are a force to be reckoned with. I love how needy Simeon is with Angel’s affection. I love how easily Angel gives in when Simeon pampers and coddles him. Their love is boundless. And as much as I want to gush and babble more, I need to find out what happens after Issac relieved that heavy burden he’s been carrying. Cliffy alert!! There is a sweet treat that softens the blow though, you won’t want to miss the ‘extra’.

Beware of: A gripping and thrilling adventure led by a mouthy magician and his mate. A love so true it defies all the rules. And a cliffhanger that will simultaneously leave you screaming and squealing.

This book is for: If you need an escape right now, may I suggest this spellbinding series? It’s sure to take you away and return you dazed and slightly confused…but happy.

I really enjoyed The Necromancer's Dance and I have been impatiently waiting for the audio for The Necromancer's Dilemma to be released.

SJ Himes' world building is a combination of paranormal romance and urban fantasy that is really compelling. Combined with Joel Leslie's character voices and emotional performance of the material and I am in listening heaven.

Told again from Angel's POV The Necromancer's Dilemma is full of action, sexy steaminess, engaging characters, and an engrossing storyline.

Joel Leslie's narration is absolutely wonderful, captivating the listener with multiple character accents, including a typical Boston and lilting Irish, the pacing and tempo of the story is great, and the overall experience was highly enjoyable.

My only complaint about the story was the very end. There is a conversation between Angel and his brother, Isaac, that ends on what I think of as an emotional cliffhanger when Isaac admits something and the story abruptly cuts off before we get Angel's reaction. I was honestly baffled and upset by it as it seemed, to me, to be a completely unnecessary way to end the story.

Nevertheless, overall I thoroughly enjoyed the story and audio performance as a whole and can easily recommend it. I'll definitely be listening to it again!

I'm looking forward to seeing where the series goes next.

This is even better than the first book with lots of Angel and Simeon time. These two are such badasses, and a total powerhouse together. Himes characters are just in a different league. The way they love each other, can you say swoon.

This is still one of the best PNR/Fantasy series I have ever read, along with Himes’ Wolfkin Saga. There’s authors and story tellers then there’s S.J. Himes. ‘Nuff said.

All the stars for this entire series.

Superb narration by Joel Leslie! I enjoyed it just as much, if not more than the first read. Well, I would have enjoyed it more had I not come down with food poisoning on the airplane while listening to this!!

Fantastic follow-up to The Necromancer's Dance!

Wow! What a great, action-packed paranormal read. I enjoyed this one much more than the first in the series--and I really liked the first one!

After meeting Simeon and Angel in The Necromancer's Dance, we get to see how their mating bond strengthens through fighting and surviving paranormal baddies. I love seeing this couple together their are ridiculously adorable and kick-ass together. I'm hopeful that SJ Himes will continue this series and keep adding to this wonderful contemporary paranormal world. I'd love to see if something develops with Isaac and Batiste, and want to know what happens with Daniel. I need the next book!

This is such a sweet series! I adore the main characters, the kick-ass side characters, the familiars and the multi layered mysteries.

The bond between Angel and Simeon grows stronger, they are such a swoony couple. No games, just pure love and trust and learning how to navigate a unique bond that has never existed before.

Holy shit, I loved the fuck outta this book!

This was fantastic and I'm definitely hooked. The story flowed seamlessly. The writing was superb, even with the few proofreading errors I saw. The story was packed with action yet still allowed room for romance.

The romance! Ah, God, the romance! One of the things I loved most about Angel and Simeon was how tactile they were with each other. Every little gesture, every little touch spoke volumes of the love these two have for each other.

That ending, though. What. The. Fuck.

I need more of this world, like, yesterday. Onto my favorites shelf it goes!

Much like in a loaf of packaged bread, the second one is much better than the first. Oh, you all know what I mean. That first slice of bread in the package is pawed at by every person in the house as they pick out the slices below it.

Exactly. Because you know your park's pond is in need of pounds of shitty bread covered in kid germs and algae.

Our story continues with Angel (Bob) and Simeon (Simon). They are now in love and living together with a couple of slackers and a maybe-dragon. Domestic bliss.
Except someone is killing people and taking their hearts. Rude.
Angel is trying to help the police find this serial killer. At the same time he is dealing with a bad-touch doctor/stalker, a crazy ex, a crazier sorcerer, and Christmas shopping. Christmas shopping that isn't online! Like a freak. Even before the rona I learned that there is no way my ass is ever stepping into a mall again during holiday season. Or ever, really. Let's cancel malls. We can do that now, right? Cancel whatever we want. I love cancel culture!!! I just want to cancel the hell out of everything that annoys me. I'm looking at you Kroger commercials with those creepy fatass dancing animation things. Nobody likes them!!

Stop this now. There is not a human on earth that likes these ads. I even found a subreddit hate group for them. They are the first bread in the loaf. No one wants them. Not even ducks, and those bastards aren't known for their pickiness. (It's the raping. Ducks are known for their raping. Yet they still have the good taste to hate these commercials.)

So, yeah, there is a lot of story going on, but I liked that. Keep things moving fast, baby. Mama gets bored easily.
There was also good character building for some of the side characters and I am looking forward to some of their stories.

I really enjoyed this second book in the series. While I did feel that book 1 felt a bit rushed, relationship wise (or rather that a lot of it took part before the book actually started), since that relationship is already firmly established here, I didn't have that issue this time.

I do enjoy this universe, with vampires out and proud, and magic very much a part of the world, even down to meeting the Fae. I worry that Angel might be becoming too powerful, what with him being the only necromancer on the east coast, and his bond with vampire Master, Simeon, giving him new depths to his magic, but for now, I'm just going to enjoy the ride.

Gahhh. I loved the first book in this series, but I was really worried that the lack of a budding relationship would make this one less enjoyable for me. Usually, reading about established relationships turns me off because there's no building tension. But damn it, this book is just as good as the first, and I can't wait for the third.

One thing I did have a problem with, however, were all the damn mistakes. Shit like "lifetime athletes" (lifelong), "outta" used for "ought to", commas between speech and action where there should have been periods, incomplete sentences, words in the wrong place, malapropisms...the list goes on. Himes is a wonderful storyteller, but there needs to be someone cleaning up the mess she sometimes makes with sentences.

"...and as Angel held the entryway door for Isaac, who was carrying the food, mindful of the the slick concrete steps."

I love her stories, so the fact that they're marred with easily-spotted mistakes makes me itchy.

The other problem I have is that I have to frickin' wait until winter to read book three. *Sigh*

The Necromancer can't catch a break...

It seems that trouble always finds it's way to Angel. Now he is faced with a serial killer,(who also happens to be a fae) a troll (the ex of dear Milli), a creepy wizard stalker, and a former family rival. All this going on while trying to juggle a growing bond with Simeon, balancing an apprenticeship with Daniel and rebuilding his relationship with his brother Isaac. Needless to say his plate is pretty full but with Simeon by his side he manages.
Another great addition to this series. I now must read book 3 because of the ending in this one 😳

“You believe in compassion, in second chances. You can forgive-and even better, you know when not to forgive. ”

I'm not a big paranormal/vampire fan, but this book (and the first one) was very good. The writing is excellent and the story is imaginative. The bond between Angel and Simeon is well done.

I'm hoping the next book will deal with Angel's brother, Isaac, and the Master vampire, Batiste. I'm reallylooking forward to reading additional books in this series.

I could read books like this all day long.

I want my very own Wee Beastie.

Can't wait for the next in the series! That end! OMG!

Thanks for the bonus at the end of the book :)

This isn't really a good review.

Re-read: February 2020 - 3.5 stars

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~ 3 stars ~
It's a good and enjoyable book but I didn't like it as much as the first one.
I felt like the plot was all over the place at times and that a lot of the plotlines were just left dangling. Maybe they will be re-introduced in the next book? I don't know. I just know that I was waiting for something more to happen or some kind of conclusion after several events in this book and when it didn't I thought "What? That's it?"
Also, there was very little relationship development between the MCs - almost as if there was nothing more to say after Angel and Simeon bonded. Maybe this was intentional. But if it was not, it's not enough for me to constantly hear how hot they are for each other and how much they love each other.
I liked Isaac and Daniel and I'm pleased to hear that both will get their own books later in the series.
Last but not least there's Eroch, the little dragon who became Angel's familiar in book one, and he's just awesome! I love this tiny guy and his antics.
Apparently, there is a free bonus story "The Necromancer's Birthday Surprise" at the end of the ebook. Sadly, it wasn't included in the audiobook and I couldn't find it online.
Reread 2: same rating has the times before.
Still enjoy all these characters and adventures!!
Reread: 4 stars same as last time, still enjoyed it as much as the first time.
4 stars
I enjoyed this book more than the first one, and it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger so i am definitely diving in to the third book right away.
I love Simeon and Angel's relationship, they really lift each other up and they know when to let things go if the other does something one of them doesn't like.
Also Eroch is so cute, i love all books with little dragons, if only he could talk that would make this story a step above because i could see that little beastie being very sassy haha
Just as good as book one, thankfully, as that was a real treat, especially for a KU freebie.
This has Angel and Simeon following the trail of a serial killer who is targeting supernatural and stealing their hearts.
All the usual suspects are back from the first novel, and the emotional connection between the two MCs is still as hot as a Scotch Bonet.
Can't wait to read more of these characters and the fabulous setting in Beacon Hill.
However, like with the first one, there are odd editing mistakes and the occasional grammatical mix-up, which can be a bit distracting.
I loved this one - all the little things I didn't like in the first book were gone here.
There's a serial killer Angel and his little crew need to catch.
There's trouble from the past that comes to haunt Daniel (whom I loved to see grow more confident, overcoming the trauma from last book).
And there's a very interesting old vampire who gets himself into trouble with Angel.
I really like the writing, and the action scenes were gripping enough to make the book unputdownable (yes, that's a word). I loved the bond between Angel and Simeon and the implications it has on both their powers. And I wanted to hug Isaac, Angel's brother, for what he been through, and help him overcome his self doubs - definitely looking forward to his and Batiste's book.
Again, Joel Leslie narrates, and while sometimes his voices are not distinct enough to know blindly who's speaking, the warm Irish lilt of Simeon's voice matches his character perfectly. Also, I loved seeing Simeon on the cover 🥰
Onwards to book 3 now...
I enjoyed this little foray into Angel's domestic life. His relationship with his vampire lover; his brother and his new apprentice. The whole mystery about the serial killer was good too, but in the end it was too easily resolved. And I'm hoping to see more about that in book 3.
Eroch is the cutest little familiar ever!!! :)
