3.5 stars. The quality of Jon Athan’s writing had me award this an additional 1/2 star. I’ve become so picky about horror these days. I’ve read so many books and seen so many movies under the genre that it’s jaded my opinion on certain concepts. Here, nothing was remarkably unique. Taking notes from the multitude of cannibalistic imbred ideas that have previously been done, ie Hills Have Eyes, Wrong Turn, etc, this just fell in line. The verbiage and actions of both the protagonists and antagonists felt very predictable and it just didn’t do much for me. Yes, it was gory and violent, as you’d expect, but that was it. A good effort, but just very bland overall, this was not one of my better experiences with Jon Athan.

When it comes to extreme horror with plenty of action, Jon Athan does not disappoint. In this story, two vacationing families camping in the woods encounter a depraved and vicious group of cannibals. Athan does not hesitate to sacrifice a likeable character to enhance the plot, which makes many of the scenes extra shocking. Will there be any innocent survivors in this savage and debauched conflict? Pick up this disturbing thriller to find out. And while you're at it, avoid the woods at all costs.

This author requests an honest review after his stories, to help him improve his writing. After finishing THE ABUSE OF ASHLEY COLLINS, I delved into this one immediately. At page 50 I was beginning to have my doubts about it. While the first one shocked the hell out of me, this one was slow and, only my personal opinion, struggling. The picture he was trying to paint about the two happy families on the camping trip felt forced and overdone. And, while he was building tension, a whole lot of nothing was making me wonder if I should abandon this one.
I decided to push through. If I reached the halfway mark and still felt this way, I was going to abandon it.
And then I hit page 60…
Like a sucker-punch, this author was screaming at the top of his lungs:
“You doubt me, Motherfucker!?”
The title gave away exactly what this story was about, but this was some seriously sick and demented shit we were getting into. The biggest compliment I can give this writer is that he went to a seriously dark place and dug even further than I could have imagined.
Well done, sir, I recommend your stories to all horror fans, if they have the stomach for it.
Also, Jon, if you are reading this, I want to mention something that I completely disagree with: Do not apologize to people if you offend them. You warned them, so they had the freedom of choice not to read your work. If they saw it through, fuck ‘em. Nobody held a gun to their heads and forced them to read it…but if they did, they should definitely mail you because it could make a damn interesting story, don’t you think?
This is what you do and what your fans expect from you. Please keep them coming!

Gore Galore!

However, that is about the only thing this book had going for it.

A small backstory:

Two families go on a camping trip out in the woods to a place called Cannibal Creek which is surrounded in myth and legend of cannibals that live in the woods that kill people. The two families are together with their children in an RV and while they are on their way to the campground they almost run over some guy standing in the road which they end up picking up and letting them be in the RV with them. They don't go far and they finally get him out of their RV, but from that moment on things go bad real fast for the two families.

Thoughts:

This book could have had a lot of potential, but the whole story (though it was loaded with gore) was just plain nuts - the characters of both families were just dumb - they reminded me of those horror movies where the characters just do all the wrong things in the movies and you are yelling at the tv screen to run or fight back - that is what these characters were like in this book. Not only that but the story ended.......strange. The ending just dropped off and there were unanswered questions of what happened to certain characters.

There was tons of blood and gore though which is the only reason I am giving this book three stars as if it wasn't for that then the book would have dropped to probably one to two stars. This was my first time reading this author too and I have a few more books by him - I am hoping they are better than this one. Three "Crazy Cannibal" Stars.

I've had enough of Splatterpunk this month. I think my hunger for blood and gore is satiated and I'd like to take a break from the hellish, really. At least for a month or two.

Cannibal Creek? Ugh. I love you Jon Athan but this was such a drag for me. I only finished this book out of respect to you Jon because I loved all your other works.

I don't know what this lacked in general but for one thing, I didn't like the way this was written. It was kind of amateurish? Well, I am not saying that I am an expert on these things but the narrative was a bit inept and didn't really sound like Jon Athan. At all.

I guess I was just having my bad days during the time I was reading this but it didn't have that "Jon Athan magic" I am accustomed to. Sorry.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
I'm thinking maybe I read too much because I read a book last week with basically the same plot. 'We're cannibals. Need to breed with an outsider.' ETC. I was really hopeful of something new, something original. The high level of gore is what saved this story. The characters were stupid. I mean, like seriously dumber than characters in horror flicks. So many bad decisions were made.
Not to be redundant, but the graphic violence held my attention despite the retelling of the same ole story and silly characters. So it's still a good story, just not what I hoped it would be

CANNIBAL CREEK [2017] By Jon Athan
My Review 4 Stars

This novel was nominated by members of the Splatterpunk Horror Book Club for the September Group Book Read. It fell short of that goal, but my Goodreads friend and I requested that Gillian post it as a Buddy Read for us the final week of August which worked out just fine. There is no guesswork when one picks a selection from Jon Athan’s considerable library of extreme horror.

“Cannibal Creek” was independently published at the end of the Summer 2017. I enjoyed the “Dear Reader” notes from the author as always. He stated proudly that (the novel) was an “ extreme horror book. He added that it featured some of his most brutal death scenes---including a scene where a character is Fans of Jon Athan know that was a bar that would go higher and higher as his vivid crimson career flourished.

Cannibal Creek was mainly inspired by Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes The remake was also an inspiration. Jon Athan acknowledged its similar concept but for the change in the locale since his story obviously takes place in the woods. He shared a fun fact with his readers. Jon Athan had originally written the book with the title of The Woods Have Eyes . Cannibal Creek was born because a movie in 2007 had already used it. Jon Athan did not have to tell us that TCM had a large influence on his novel as well. I was a little surprised that Wrong Turn also influenced parts of the novel.

The giddy reader finds himself in “Somewhere, West Virginia” anxiously waiting for the curtain to lift and the unwary young city folk to meet the cannibal clan of freaks and normal looking sociopaths to get this massacre started. Ironically when I read this novel over a few nights the TV was running some ghoulish footage of West Virginia, specifically actual video tapes of snake handlers in the Pentecostal Ministry who died horribly while practicing their religion taking up large Diamondbacks and Timber Rattlers in particular. The former are huge and have large venom glands able to dispense lethal doses sufficient to kill five grown men. It is the cocktail of hemotoxins and neurotoxins that render the Timber Rattlesnake a deadly adversary. In Appalachia, West Virginia alone stands staunchly behind all religious freedom to include the snake handlers. But our two families of city slickers need not worry themselves about poison snakes and dangerous wildlife in the woods surrounding them.

The two families are enjoying a state-of-the-art recreational vehicle and can enjoy TV, cell phones, and pretty much the amenities of home. The entire group are oblivious to any lethal dangers that may be around them. They had encountered a stranger on the road who weirded them out by telling the kids stories of cannibals thriving in the woods and eating people. The menfolk dropped the fellow off prematurely which undoubtfully rankled him more than a little bit.

The first three quarters of the book is pretty much standard fare for a slasher extreme horror novel paying homage to a trio of heavy hitting horror franchises, particularly “The Hills Have Eyes” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”.

The pace of the action and the escalation of the tension and violence was notable as the beaten down victims prepare to make a last stand, and a “wild card” turns up in the deck of the plot as it is winding down.

The author’s descriptive prose when introducing the reader to the cannibal dungeon was exceptional in my opinion.

The concrete floor and the brick walls were stained with blood. The stench of death was ingrained into every inch of the dungeon. There were lights on the walls to the left and right. The lights were not supposed to be red, but the bulbs were covered with blood, which changed the color of the illumination…She felt as if her vocal cords were snipped and her lips were sewn shut.

I also liked the ending, and as I said earlier, Jon Athan’s “Dear Reader” notes. It could be mentioned that Jon Athan was only 25 years old at this time in the early part of his flourishing career. He was producing a novel a month during this period. Most of his recent stuff I have read is outstanding and is mostly his “Author Enhanced Versions”, easily 5-Star Reads. He is perhaps the most successful independent author working today.

ENJOYABLE EARLY STANDALONE NOVEL FROM A YOUNG JON ATHAN

Two families set off for a camping trip, but run into a hitchhiker on the way. After managing to lose him due to his disturbing behaviour, they carry on, but are unsettled by the fact he knows where they are going. This trip, meant to be fun, will change the lives of the family forever. Will any of them manage to escape.. with their lives?

Brilliant book, gory but not as extreme as his other books (to an extent, still extreme). Has a wrong turn/hills have eyes feel to it, which is always good!

Two families are on a camping trip together and almost hit a hitchhiker. They are reluctant to take him when Jed asks for a ride as compensation, and he unnerves them all, especially the kids with talk about cannibals in the woods waiting to eat them. Taking a chance to ditch him, they forget that he knows where they will be camping and it is just a few miles away. Arriving at the camp site, they find it almost empty, and the young couple there are leaving early, saying that they are sure that someone was spying on them, urging the new arrivals to leave too. Despite misgivings from a few of the group, the two families decide to stay.

The stupidity of the characters in this book really is amazing and I was yelling at them for it! Joel is Mr Take Charge Guy who can't be told that he is wrong about anything and is competing with best friend Tony all the time on everything. This male ego thing didn't greatly endear me to either man but the stupidity gets worse when they ignore the warnings from the couple who are leaving. I get that you would ignore scare stories but deciding to stay in a place with 3 women and 3 young children when you are told there are peeping toms in the area? Keep on driving guys! Joel and Tony take the kids into the woods to find the creek and are convinced that they are being followed. At best it is creepy Jed who may be upset at being ditched, at worse, someone else more dangerous. Do they decide to leave? Nope. Well, if they did there would be no story, but the dumbass move let me yell at them!

The parenting skills of Joel and Linda, Tony and Valentina are seriously bad. After the warnings and the being followed thing, they decide to let three young kids and a teenage girl camp unattended in a tent set up away from the camper van. Meanwhile, the adults pump up the volume of the music inside, where they cannot possibly hear any trouble and start getting drunk. They are unaware that Jasmine has left the three kids alone in the tent to go sneaking off into the woods to meet boyfriend Joshua who has followed in his car. And even when Joel is meant to be checking on the kids, he is too busy trying to get one over on Tony to even notice the prowler by the tent...yeah great parenting! I wanted to slap them! And little Diego was the child from hell which was another strike against Tony and Valentina!

I don't want to go any further into the plot in this review or I'll spoil everything but lets just say it is going to be a very long night for everyone! The story follows what happens at the campsite and what is happening in the woods at various points. The action certainly continues throughout and there are plenty of tense moments in amongst the gore! It is very much based on a Texas Chainsaw Massacre type plot but the author does add his own stamp to it. I said that the characters annoyed me but it was in that entertaining way as you know their dumb choices are coming back to bite them, which of course is the whole point of the story. So there was never a danger of DNF or anything as the whole thing was too entertaining.

This book is perfect for fans of the classic 70's/80's horror films. There is gore, cannibalism and sexual violence as you would expect from this slasher type book in the genre. This is the second book I've read by Jon Athan, the first being Camp Blaze, which is based on Friday 13th, and I'm planning to read a lot more of him. The books don't mess around and just get straight into the story which is what I like to read.

I was going to write a long-winded review using all these angry notes I had in my phone.
Then I realised I don't give enough of a fuck to put in the effort to construct a whole review about this..."book".
Will not be reading anything else from this author. After reading in the author's note that he puts out a "book" per month, it all makes sense now.

1 star for the pretty cool, graphic descriptions though.

Great cannibal story

You can never go wrong with a cannibal story.

The Bakers and Riveras are on there way to a camping trip in West Virginia. They pick up an odd fella who tells the family that where they are headed is known as "Cannibal Creek". The family get a bit freaked out and ditch the hitchhiker. Things go all back to normal. I

They get to there campsite and they come across a couple that informs they that they always felt someone was watching them and they are leaving early from their vacation. Receiving this inform kind of worries the family, but they don't have it ruin their trip.

Jasmine, the oldest daughter of the Bakers, has been in contact with her boyfriend Joshua to meet up with him while the family is asleep. The kids decide that they want to sleep in a tent for the night. The parents decide that they can sleep in the tent only if Jasmine is in there also. Jasmine agrees as to she is able to sneak out easier to meet with her boyfriend.

As night time falls, Jasmine sneaks off. When she returns, that's when stuff has already hit the fan at the campsite.

The book definitely will definitely remind you of "Wrong Turn" and "Hills have Eyes". Cannibals that are deformed, incest and necrophilia. That's what you expect in cannibal stories and Jon Athan definitely gives that to you.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I couldn't stop reading once I started.

Non il migliore ma comunque godibilissimo!

Jon Athan è davvero bravo a scrivere e a creare storie extreme horror scorrevoli, violente e disturbanti.

WTF The only other novel I read by Jon Athan was “Butcher Road”, and I rated it 5 out of 5 and enjoyed every part of it. Cannibal Creek was very similar to Butcher Road but even more intense and extreme. I was quite surprised.

I’m definitely going to be reading many more books by Jon Athan. The best thing about him is he goes all out and doesn’t hold anything back. It’s great to see someone push the limits. It’s a horror book! It’s not supposed to be censored.

The sixth chapter in this book was something else 😵‍💫

I really appreciate that with Jon Athan’s books, I can always spot the homages to classic horror films and this one absolutely delivers.

It transported me straight back to my teenage years watching early 2000s B‑movie creature features / monsters in the woods and here we’ve got deformed hillbillies. I ate it up (pun fully intended).

One thing I consistently enjoy about Athan’s work is the pacing. He’s great at establishing the setting, the characters, and the tone right from the start, and this book is a perfect example. We’ve got two families, a teenage daughter and her boyfriend, a police officer, a wonderfully creepy villain with unhinged motives… and of course, our cannibals.

I liked how everything unfolded, and I’d say this is one of Athan’s stronger entries - though I’ll admit my love for this horror trope might make me a little biased.

It’s not his grossest book (that honour goes to Spit and Die), but there are definitely some uncomfortable moments, which, let’s be honest, is exactly what you’re signing up for when you pick up a Jon Athan novel.

Overall, a great read! 🦴

Cannibal Geek!

The author humbly tells his influences at the end of the book, and I recognised every one of them in the story, if you like the hill have eyes, wrong turn, Texas chainsaw massacre then this is the book for you. You will recognise a load of scenes, but there are plenty of new spins to keep you shocked, cause let's be honest that's why your reading it. Well the author does this in spades, you will be surprised by the kinda violence they can't show on the big screen. I really liked this read. It was easier to digest than juicy leg steak. Note for author I'm not sure but I think you may be using the gist out of context, I only mention cause it's at the end of the book, I think it's a noun only, but I could be taking a wrong turn. Sorry! That was the last pun.

“As the officer sat in the driver's seat, fiddling with his radio and gathering his supplies, Joshua gazed into the woodland. He was scarred by his horrific experience in the woods, but he was willing to risk everything for Jasmine.”

Jon Athan books are addicting I just want to read more and more by him!
This was a perfect cannibal story I can definitely would read a sequel for this. Loved this story it was dark and brutal I couldn’t put it down it was so good! I really loved Liam he was the police officer but his character was so well written and also Joshua, Jasmine’s boyfriend he was so caring and kind!
Highly recommend this book to any extreme horror lover!

I was gonna rate this five stars but I dropped it to four when the most annoying character (in my opinion) survived. Jon Athan delivered a good story with this book. The only issues I faced were the dumb characters. Each and every one of them was dull, please. So dull. I face palmed so hard and actually looked forward to them dying so that I wouldn't have to read about them anymore. The antagonists were more entertaining lol. This is my third book by Jon. I have, like, six more in my library. I'm looking forward to diving into them. If you liked Hills Have Eyes, this would be a good read for you.

Timeless Horror

The first book I read by this author I didn't really enjoy but I wanted to check his work one more time. I'm so glad I did! This book was a great horror story! It had everything a person expects from a horror novel and even more. A book I couldn't put down with wonderfully disturbing characters and a great plot. Best of all the macabre events were described in such a way that even without going into much detail my imagination created grisly horrors and made it almost impossible to put down. I'm so glad I decided to try another book by this author!

In true Jon Athan fashion, a happy time quickly turns int a HORRIBLE, UNSPEAKABLE, DISGUSTING, GORY bloodbath and I LUH It!!

Two families go on a camping trip and their lives are forever shattered when they pick up a hitch hiker with a cannibalistic taste.

As I stated with other Athan book reviews, I LOVE have no one is safe from the beast in the book regardless of gender or age. As with other J. Athan books what I didn't like is I don't feel the beast(s) get gotten as good as they should be gotten and I am looking for Jon to REALLY give the beast(s) in his books their comeuppance; meanwhile, I am on to another J. Athan read.

Good extreme horror

Most extreme authors I've read keep their books too short because they're not as talented as others. Athan does a good job in this book and I really enjoyed it. The horror scenes were great and different. Although the characters weren't very developed and the beginning totally unrealistic I've considered this a great book from an independent author and suggest you read it.

For the lover of all things horror!

From the start, this book grabs you by the 'nads' and never lets go. At times I felt transported into The Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Wrong Turn movies! If you like your cannibals grotesque and deformed, deaths described in brutal detail and the suspense of if there will be any survivors, then this is your book. Grab it today for a gore filled fun weekend read.

Where is the ending?

The book started out great, the climax was great, the ending- left me hanging and needing-wanting more. This book was not gory which is a disappointment. I really enjoyed this author but I’m realizing that not all of his book have that gory, shock factor I crave.
