Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft's protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.
Although Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe.

This is the sixth volume in a colection by editors Saída de Emergência compiling the works of Lovecraft. This book consists on short stories which were co-authored and/or rewritten by Lovecraft.
There are some very small references to the most known of his mythos (the few references are mostly just mentions to cults of Cthulhu) but asides such small references, the stories are completely disconnected from his known creations.
The writing is tipical noir pulp but doesn't have the same feeling as his other works. That sense of dread and horror which lingers in tales such as "Shadow over Insmouth" and other doesn't occur here.
These are interesting pulp horror tales but somewhat lacking compared to his other works.
There's still on additional and final volume to this collection, so let's see what comes from there.

A culpa de eu não ter gostado deste livro não é de H. P. Lovecraft. Mas enquanto apreciadora da sua obra, achei que faria sentido ler este livro dado que desconhecia os contos.
Estamos a falar de uma coletânea de contos colaborativos e em co-autoria, onde, diz-nos o editor, que grande parte dos trabalhos terão sido reescritos por HPL e também terá trabalhado de acordo baseado um enredo previamente fornecido. Estão a ver onde quero chegar? Conseguimos identificar o estilo de escrita e temáticas - toca um pouco na mitologia lovecraftiana -, mas não sentimos que estamos a mergulhar naquele universo tão característico de HPL.
Se lermos a obra sem estes preconceitos iniciais, creio que o leitor poderá tirar mais partido da leitura. Porém, se fores fã da obra de Lovecraft, esta não será uma leitura que te irá arrebatar ou surpreender positivamente.
