Giovanni DeRose only came back to Las Vegas to work with his brothers in the legendary family tattoo studio. Instead, he’s found himself the leader of a sinking ship, thrown together with a gorgeous woman who won’t back down. But with the threat of closure if he doesn’t turn a profit ASAP, working alongside her may be his only option. Gio can do just about anything with his talented hands and bare skin, but this bad boy will need something different if he’s going to save Thorn...
Riley Bryne is an Irish lass that’s as smooth as whiskey—if you don’t mind the burn that comes along with it. As Thorn’s new co-manager she’s desperate to pull it back into the green to clear her own debt, but her numbers-focused tactics throws her up against her Gio’s art-centered direction. Challenging the tattooed hunk is easy, but stopping herself falling for his smouldering touch? The odds don't look good.
Riley is business savvy and a little bit bossy—something Giovanni finds frustrating in the studio and hot as hell when he’s got her pinned to their office desk. But if Thorn Tattoo is going to survive they’ll need to combine not just their bodies, but their talents outside the bedroom, too.
New to Leslie? Readers suggest starting with 'The Bossy One' (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C6BP3BBF) —Imagine a sunny Minnesotan Mary Poppins, employed by a grumpy Irish billionaire. The story is a blend of humor, revenge, passion, heartbreak, hope, and witty banter. As one reader put it, ‘This story had me squealing at the romantic moments and silly moments.’

Tattooing is in Giovanni's blood, he manages Thorn Tattoo the shop his late father built from the ground up. Giovanni's passion and skill lies in tattooing not so much the management side of things and he's no idea just how much the shop is struggling. Gio's brother Antonio owns the shop and brings in Riley Byrne in a last ditch attempt to save it but Riley and Gio butt heads at every turn and while they are both incredibly attracted to each other physically that's where the attraction ends.
Giovanni resents Riley being there, he considers her salary a complete waste of money, money which could be spent on another tattoo artist which would actually bring much needed money into the shop.
Riley tries her best to work with Gio but he's just not interested and unless something changes the shop will go under.
I really enjoyed this book the more time these two spend together the more they realise the other is so much more than they first thought. Riley is such a great female character she's strong intelligent as well as beautiful and she remains that way throughout the book.
I loved both Gio and Riley although it did take me longer to warm up to Gio.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley and Relay Publishing.
REVIEW I came across this book by accident when I found Thorn, bk2 & Bloom bk3 pf The Thorn Tattoo Studio Series available on Netgalley. After reading the blurbs for those two books I went on Amazon UK and purchased this book, Rose bk1 in The Thorn Tattoo Studio Series. I don't know about everyone else but I like to swap around the genres I read and was in the mood for a lighter, maybe more romantic read and this series seemed to fit the bill. Although my intention was to read Rose first and then get around to reading the other books later. Leslie North was also an author I hadn't read before and I do enjoy trying out books by authors new to me or even debut authors.
The cover features a rather hunky looking, guy with some neat facial hair and quite an extensive array of tattoo's. The guy has his head tilted downwards which to me suggests he could be a quieter type of guy maybe even a little shy. I love the font of the title "Rose" which after beginning to read the book I presumed came from the Tattooist family name DeRose. I did initially jump to the conclusion that the lead female character must have been called Rose at some point rather than Riley but the source of the title became clearer as the book went on.
The book is set around a family owned Tattoo studio previously owned by the patriarch of the DeRose family, then when he passes the business is run by the three brothers. Oldest brother Antonio DeRose who takes care of the financial side of the business. Middle brother Luciano DeRose who has worked at the Thorn Studio but at the moment is travelling around being a guest artist at conventions, shows and other studios. The last and youngest brother is Giovanni DeRose and he is the brother this book centres on, he is also the DeRose brother featured on the book cover. The Thorn Studio isn't doing as well as it could. Antonio is sick of bringing up the subject with Giovanni who has no head for figures and financial aspects of the business. So Antonio finally takes matters into his own hands and hires Riley Byrne, a rather bossy young woman of Irish descent to co-manage and take care of the studio front desk, so bookings, taking money, doing the stock checks etc etc. One of the first things Riley does is implement a computer booking system, and look at ways that Thorn Studio can increase its turnover. Giovanni, is set in his ways using an old tattered appointment book and has a more relaxed attitude to timings and such so initially hates the new computerised system. In fact he sets his mind to hate everything Riley suggests such as the courses she wants Giovanni to give. He eventually relents and agrees to do them and takes Riley to see a conference room he has managed to book for the first one that is part of a hotel/casino complex. Its whilst they are there that Giovanni relaxes and as Riley hasn't been in a casino he talks her into letting him show her around. He bets and plays poker well, something we later learn during the other Thorn Studio books that all the DeRose men have a talent for. The Hotel/Casino complex offer Giovanni a complementary suite in the hotel, and that's where sparks fly when cajoled into going to take a look at the suite and its luxuries Giovanni & Riley kiss and . . . .
The character I loved the most in this book was Riley, she was an independant woman and not scared of standing up to the big burly males that frequent a tattoo studio. Riley certainly isn't afraid to stand her ground against Giovanni, and it's one of the first things that attract him to her. Then when he kisses her originally to kind of prove the point that he can, his feelings continue to grow. Giovanni then accidentally discovers Riley's secret and she soon learns what it feels like to be pushed into suggestions you may not be so comfortable with. Rather like the way Riley has been pushing Giovanni into changing the way things run at Thorn Studio. I also like Giovanni, for all his bustle and tough guy image, he soon gives his heart to Riley even if at first he doesn't want to admit it. Passing it off as a bit of fun to begin with.
I enjoyed reading the book, learning the different characters and names for the tattooists at Thorn Studio. Giovanni being the head tattooist, then the brief appearance of "The News" who soon leaves after his work not being up to the requires standards of the increasingly popular Thorn Studio. There's also characters who use their own "normal" names such as Jaime Ritter, and Ben Mendez who also does piercing at the studio. I'll be totally honest I know very little about tattoo's and tattooists but you really didn't need to in order to thoroughly enjoy this book.
If you are looking for a fairly short, light romantic read, then this could be just the book you are looking for. After finishing reading this book I knew I wanted to read the next one in the series. Which was quite new for me as I usually only read the occasional contemporary and romance book sandwiched in between other genres, but I enjoyed Rose so much I wanted to read more by Leslie North.
My immediate thoughts upon finishing this one were that it was different than my usual genre comfort zone. Yes, it has some steamy scenes. I did really enjoy the book. Loved all the different characters within the Thorn Tattoo Studio.
Received an ARC for my fair review for netgalley. I enjoyed book and will continue the series, however I kind of wish that both Giovanni and Riley would have made up their minds sooner. They were both instantly attracted to each other from the moment that they met, however they fought it. Now I understood why Riley fought it, she did not want to seem unprofessional, and felt that being in a relationship with a coworker would damage her reputation and her goal. Giovanni really had no excuse besides being a bossy jerk, he just did not know what he wanted besides her body, and was stuck on his pride, I kind of wanted to yell at him and remind him of his age. I did appreciate that he did stick up for her and made sure that others respected her, and that he did admit that he was a jerk and that he needed her professionally as well as personally. And we got our HEA, can't wait for the next one....
An immovable force meets a force of nature. Sparks fly in this battle of the tattoo artist and the headstrong temptress. Gio is every girl's wicked fantasy. Until he opens his mouth. Arrogance and patronization make this walking dream a living nightmare. Riley has the skills to set him right. As long as she leads with her head and never let's her senses lead her astray. Ms. North picked a super title for this prickly couple. From the most stubborn of thorns Riley and Gio created something beautiful. Animosity bloomed like the most sensuous of buds and became as breathtaking as a rose.
4.5 Stars Rose is a fabulous start to the Thorn Tattoo Studio series. The character interaction and quirky banter along with the dynamic storyline and plot twists this story was engaging and well written. I would recommend this book to readers
Loved this book!! It had me hooked from page one. Giovanni and Riley had such chemistry, I enjoyed watching their relationship grow. The mystery behind Riley's past is what kept me hooked the most. I had to know what promise she made to Amanda and who this Amanda really was!! :)
This book is definitely worth reading!! It has been added to my recommendation list!!
I skimmed some but the story was pretty good. I love Gio but he is way to pigheaded. Change is bound to happen but he fights it tooth and nail. No one respecting Riley was just stupid.
Giovanni DeRose is manager and sometimes artist at Thorn Tattoo. The shop was started by his deceased father and now belongs to his brother, Antonio, so he is fiercely passionate when it comes to what’s best for it. When Gio finds out his brother went behind his back and hired a new co-manager, Riley, he is none too happy. Convinced she has no idea what’s she’s doing, he fights her on every decision and recommendation. But Riley doesn’t back down easy, which only makes Gio want to ravage her… after he fires her.
Riley and Gio’s love-hate relationship easily draws you in. The drama and situations presented in the book aren’t drastic, but the characters are so multi-layered that you can’t help but invest in them. There’s plenty of angst and their chemistry is palpable. When they’re not at each other’s throats, they’re actually pretty sweet together.
The book’s primary focus, other than on their relationship, is Thorn Tattoo and trying to save it from going deeper in the red. There’re a few scenes where Gio’s temper gets the best of him and he makes for some entertaining drama, but overall, it’s pretty relaxed.
My only complaint is that there’s a lot of introspection in the book and it manages to become repetitive. The same insecurities and doubts keep coming up, yet rather than actively doing anything about it, they continue to ignore their issues. I would’ve loved for Riley and Gio have been a little more proactive and a little less mentally hung up. But overall, it was an easy, enjoyable read.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Rose is the first book in the exciting new Thorn Tattoo Studio series by Leslie North. With an interesting storyline, complex characters, hilarious banter, angst, and surprise twists, this emotional roller-coaster of a story will steal your heart. It was fantastic, and a great beginning to what is going to be an amazing series.
I liked both of the main characters, most of the time, but there were a few times when I didn't know if they would be able to redeem themselves or not. Gio's arrogant, refuses to change anything, and can be a jerk. Riley storms into this new shop thinking that she knows best, is right about everything, and can do no wrong. All of which is extremely annoying. However, both have their reasons for why they act like they do, and once they start working together, getting along, and not fighting the attraction between them, everything starts changing for the better.
Can Gio put his pride aside and allow Riley to help him save his father's legacy? Will Riley be able to tone down her always right attitude, and learn how to work with Gio, instead of trying to dictate his and everyone's actions? Although both are trying to fight the attraction between them, what will happen when they both stop fighting? Will they be able to save Thorn Tattoo Studio? Will either of them get the HEA they deserve? You'll have to read it to find out!
I highly recommend this book, series, and fantastic author.
I have voluntarily reviewed this complimentary copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book”. Let’s start with the first couple of chapters. The business belongs to the brothers. One of them brings in someone woman to help with the business. Now, I am trying to understand why you would want to hire someone who doesn’t understand the business. I know that they might have done it because of they a degree but still. Oh, “no respects me”. Give me a break. In that kind of business, no one gives – it is earned. Riley is too much of a “goody to shoe” for my taste. OH…wait until the end of chapter 5. But before that, when Riley was in college, she had a friend named Amanda. But, we don’t know what that story is because we have to find out later in the book. Very upset by that. So, the rest of the book was good and the ending was nice. I am happy with the book for a few reasons. First off, there are NOT a lot of books that go into detail about the life of a tattoo artist or their business. I found that refreshing. The second is…no bonus books! I cannot tell you how happy that makes me. Oh, there are some steamy pages. Nothing too not (in my option) but they are there. I wouldn’t pay any more than 2.99 for the book. Remember, this is book one of three. There are also a lot of “F” bombs but not more than that. It seems to be between an R rating and NC-17 and much closer to a 3.5 star until the last chapter and epilogue. That made it to a 4 star for me. (I wish we could have read about something in the last chapter though).
Review also on my blog: https://nextbookaroundthecorner.wordp... After comboys and Sheikh's I found this one on Netgalley from Leslie North. And yet another time she surprised me. Gio is a skilled tattoo artist who tries to uphold his father's legacy the Thorn Tattoo shop. But whereas he can create wonderful designs on human canvas, he just can't turn the constant losses into profits.
Enter Riley, a sassy young lady, who is hired by Gio's older brother to help Giovanni turn the tide. With a degree in finance and a smart mouth she should be able to help to get the shop back into the black figures.
But Gio's pride is wounded and every time Riley suggest a change, it feels to him like she is stomping on his heart with those gorgeous legs on heels. So he basically hates her guts and this is likewise. Too bad their bodies have a mind of their own, because they are definitely attracted to each other. This creates a lot of hot and messy tension in the shop.
And then there is the reason why Riley wants to help turn this tattoo shop around. Will the guys at the shop respect or resent her, when they find out what is Riley's motive?
A wonderful read, full of tension and sparks and of course some plot twists to keep you reading. Four out of five stars from me. And I'll be keeping an eye out for more yummie tattoo stuff from Leslie North. With a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
Loved the start to this new series wow Riley and Giovanni's story is so passionate.
When Gio meets the strange woman in his tattoo shop talking like she works there he doesn't know what to make of her, when he gets to talk to Riley he finds out his brother hired Riley to co-manage the shop with him to help save the busines. What Gio finds infuriating about Riley is she doesn't back down from him and he wants everything done his way so fight Riley at every step it is. What he never expected was the feels to start to make him think of Riley a lot.
When Riley takes the job in the tattoo shop it's to help her carry Amanda with her, when he meets Gio she never thought he would be so handsome covered in ink, he makes her feel things she doesn't want to feel makes it hard to concentrate when he's near her. Gio constantly fights her on everything she wants to implement at the shop to make it run smoothly, but what they all don't know is how she is hiding a big secret.
Will Gio and Riley finally stop fight each other to see what they could have or will it all be to much for them. Leslie North has started this new series with Gio and Riley's story it's full of emotions, anger, heartache, love and commitment tempers flare. Read To see what happens with there story.
Let me start with I loved it!!! Just wish it was longer.
Riley and Giovanni's story is so passionate I was hooked from the beginning.

These two have amazing history and is easily a five star read, this story flows so incredibly well that the next thing you know your 80% into the book and loving every second of it. The believable way the characters interact is perfect. Run, Hop, Jump or use your (1 click) finger to do whatever you have to do and get this amazing book. It'll break your heart, you'll want to scream with frustration and it'll let you discover that love just might conquer all. The chemistry is steamy and sweet and oh so romantic.
Thanks you Netgally for letting me read and review.
I really enjoyed reading this story about Gio and Riley as they try to help the struggling Thorn Tattoo studio try to stay in the black. It was pretty funny that Gio really had this love/hate feeling going on with Riley! If I was Riley, I don't think I could have handled him just going ahead and making decisions without working together!
I loved how they were attracted to each other yet didn't want to act on that attraction. Gio and Riley really had a great chemistry and it was fun to watch them move closer and closer to giving in to their feelings.
Along with the romance, there were some twists that made the story really intriguing! Things that Gio didn't know about Riley, something Riley didn't know about Amanda, and lots of drama as they try to figure ways to save Thorn. They were so perfect together and I loved the scene when Gio practices for his workshop and all the guys try to get Riley to attempt a tattoo, that was so funny!
I hope that there will be more stories to come with Gio's brother as the main character.
"Rose", is the first book in the 'Thorn Tattoo Studio' series, and it packs a punch. Giovanni only knows one thing, how to ink a great tattoo in the shop he co-owns with his brother. Riley enters as co-manager to try to turn around the sinking business. She was hired by Gio's brother without his knowledge. We are talking about a woman that has looks and smarts, a Princeton grad. To Gio, she looks too squeaky clean and wonders what she could bring to a tattoo shop. Riley knows what she is doing and has a great surprise for them all. The sparks begin to fly as they have differing visions and opinions on how best to run the failing shop. The banter is fun with steam between them getting hotter until they combust. Some sexy scenes, some sweet scenes and a story that is a page turner and has the reader looking for Gio and Riley's HEA. I look forward to reading the next in the series. I would like to thank NetGalley and Relay Pub. for gifting me "Rose". My opinion is my own. This is mine. 4.5 Stars!
Rose is the first in a new series set around the Thorn Tattoo Studio in Las Vegas. The studio was first set up by Giovanni's father and he is determined to keep it running in the same way his Dad did it. Gio's older brother knows the studio is failing financially so brings in feisty Riley to try and save the business. Gio and Riley instantly hate each others ideas, but can't hide their instant attraction to each other.
This is a good setting for a book, both in terms of the studio and the Las Vegas area in general. The author has introduced us to a set of secondary characters with plenty of scope for their development in future books. It was a little insta-insane-attraction for me and lots of repetitive "wow she's so hot, I'm going to make her mine" dominant alpha male thoughts for me, but that's just my personal opinion and I'm sure lots of readers will enjoy this thoroughly and this will develop into an excellent series.
Giovanni DeRose is the smart mouthed suave suite wearing co-owner of Thorn Tattoos. His brother Marco is supposed to be working alongside him but he has other ideas and doesn't want to be tied down to the family business. Antonio, Giovanni's older brother has decided the business is losing money to he brings in a Co-Manager, unbeknownst to Giovanni.
After a ruckus at the front counter, Giovanni finds himself face to face with Riley Byrne having a verbal altercation with an unhappy customer. He confronts the customer and evicts him from the shop only to be left with a seething Riley and her outburst about the way to run his business.
He didn't know it then but it doesn't take him long to come to the conclusion that his life and shop will no longer be the same, especially when he finds out what Riley can really do for the business.
Enjoyable read and good start to a new series.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review.
WOW, what an awesome new series from Leslie North! This group of tattoo artists and their shop gets more than they thought when Rose walks through the doors as the new co-manager along with Gio. Giovanni runs Thorn Tattoo, it's been in his family since his father started it and wasn't eager to work with the new woman, Rose, set to help manage the shop thinking there is no way she knows how to deal with tattoo artists and clients and the shop in general. That is until she proves him wrong on that front and rocks him to the core with the instant attraction they both feel. There is a depth to Rose that she doesn't show easily and yet Gio will be the one who will bring it out of her. Gio and Rose are electric together and I love their chemistry. I can't wait to see what else is in store for this series and these guys. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Giovani DeRose has dreamed of running his father's tattoo studio since he was a young boy just learning to draw. Now, he is on a sinking ship that his brother owns yet isn't willing to give up an inch of control. Antonio brings in Riley Byrne who has a strong finance background. Riley and Giovani butt heads over her every change to Thorn Tattoo. Can Giovani and Riley combine their talents and passion to help Thorn Tattoo survive?
After reading this book, I wanted to hop on a plane and go to Vegas so I could get a tattoo from Riley! This is an amazing start to the series! I think that Giovani is one of the best bad boy characters from Leslie North. I can't wait for the rest of the series!
I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
I received a free copy of this book through NetGalley and am voluntarily and honestly reviewing it.
Giovanni is living his dream and at a tattoo studio. However, it isn't turning a profit and may very well be in danger of closing. Enter Riley, a surprise for Gio who is hired by his brother to help save their shop.
This is the first book I have read from Ms North and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found Giovanni and Riley to be interesting and entertaining characters with chemistry. Riley is a kickass, take charge kind of woman so I must admit I love her characterization. I also must admit that Gio was a bit more difficult to like at first.
I'm not a fan of Insta-love type of books so I'm glad this wasn't like that. The two often butt heads and their love felt more genuine than most romance stories I've read. I would definitely recommend this book.
This is Book 1 in the Thorn Tattoo Studio. Giovanni is working in his family’s tattoo studio. It was a childhood dream to be working with his brothers but it’s becoming a nightmare. They are losing money and have been threatened with foreclosure unless something changes. The change starts when his brother hires Riley as a new co-manager to try to turn the shop around. But he considers her his current pain in the ass. She wants to change everything and he doesn’t like change. They clash from day one. But the electricity between the two of them would set the world on fire. This was a really exciting book and like I said, it’s really electrifying when they get together. I can’t wait to find out what happens with his brothers. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book that I received from the author.
From the first meet, Gio and Riley clash but their chemistry does not let them stay away from each other. They are both complex characters and a contradiction as it is revealed throughout the story, but it works, they mesh so well. A good set of secondary characters that add to the story. It was an interesting and informative look into the tattoo artistry world. I liked the flow of the story, some tension, a bit of drama, steamy scenes and it ends in HEA, I enjoyed listening to it. Looking forward to the next story. - 4 stars
New voice for me, Mr. Carberry is a good fit for Gio's temperament. It is flexible to differentiate the many male characters, not so much for female ones, but that didn't take away from the story. I will check his other works for sure. - 4 stars
Leslie North has a new series that is a departure from her usual characters. This series meet everyday people who are struggling to survive and to keep a business alive. In this first book we meet Giovanni, aka Gio, and Reily. Gio is the manager of Thorn Tattoo Studio in Las Vegas NV. The studio is not doing well and unless they make some changes, they may be forced to close. Gio's brother hires Reily to come into the studio to make some changes to turn the business around. Gio wants nothing to do with Reilly and her suggestions but the chemistry between them is electric. Can Reilly turn around Gio's thinking and Turn around Thorn Tattoo Studio. Enjoy the surprises as they happen throughout the book. I volunteered to read an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The chemistry between Gio and Riley was amazing. They were definitely hot and steamy together. I loved how different they were, one being the artist and one the number cruncher, until by the end, they weren’t so different after all. Riley revealed herself to be just as much an artist, and Gio was starting to wrap his head around the business side of things. It made for a lot of animus in the beginning which led to so much sexual tension between them. Once they stopped fighting that tension, they stopped fighting so much and began to learn how much they complement each other.
A great read. My first Leslie North book and I’d gladly read another =)
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this story by author Leslie North. I loved the relationship between each character, the arrogance of Gio, a very talented tattoo artist and Riley, a head strong number cruncher. I loved the surprise twist with Riley’s past and how Gio dealt with it. This is a great story about opposites attract and don’t judge a book by its… tattoo’s? This story was a “I got to read one more chapter before bed” for me! I look forward to reading more from this author and from the “Thorn Tattoo” series. I rate this book 4.5 stars.
***I voluntarily reviewed this ARC for an honest review via NetGalley, this is my honest opinion and has not been influenced by the author, Publishers or NetGalley in anyway.*** Thank you!
Giovanni DeRose and his brother own a tattoo shop that is going under fast. When Gio’s brother, Antonio hires Riley Bryne to come in and help turn things around, Gio is furious. He does everything he can to get Riley gone. In the course of Gio trying to get rid of Riley and Riley’s determination to stay, sparks fly and they discover that they are just what each other need.
It’s always fun to start a new Leslie North Series as she comes up with a hot, alpha hero and a woman who helps him realize she is just what he needs. I enjoyed “Rose” the first in the Thorn Tattoo Series. I received an ARC for an honest review.
Leslie starts this new series off with a bang or should I say, oil and water. This book features Gio, and Reily. Gio is the manager of Thorn Tattoo Studio in Las Vegas NV. That his father built from the ground up. Gio's expertise is in tattoo art and not business. So his brother hires Reily to come into the studio to turn the business around. Gio wants nothing to do with Reilly or her suggestions and they constantly fight. But their mutual attraction and chemistry is off the charts. Lots of twists and surprises to keep you page turning. Well written with a great storyline and colorful characters. I received an advance copy from Hidden Gems and voluntarily chose to review it
Giovanni DeRose is determined to save his father's tattoo shop at all costs. Riley Bryne is determined to make up for her friend's life being cut short. Instant attraction blooms, but Giovanni is determined to proof he doesn't need a co-manager. Will Gio find a way to let his defenses down? Will Riley finally give into what she has wanted all along and find herself?
This book was hot and steamy! Gio came off as a jerk, but little by little you start to see the cracks and when he finally gave Riley a chance, he blew me away. Riley proofed she was beauty and brains and was able to hold her own with the big guys! Great book and cannot wait for more in this series!

I've listened to a lot of books by this author and I've cone to expect a great book, and this book delivers exactly that.
This story had me laughing out loud and feeling right along with the characters.
I loved the slow build of the relationship between Giovanni and Riley, I thought it made the story realistic and the tension between them was a lot of fun. The mystery of Riley's past also added another great element to the book.
I really enjoyed listening to it, the narrator did a great job with the character voices and conveying emotions.
