The fictional story of Daniel Baxter, a successful massage therapist who was employed at a high class day spa and is accused of sexually assaulting female clients. After he is arrested, his attorney encourages him to plead no contest to a lesser charge. He is placed on probation and the sex offender registry, and the life he once loved turns into a life of despair, anguish, and a struggle to once again find happiness.
Whew! I started and finished this book on a Saturday afternoon. It took me about 4 hours to get through. As a disclaimer, a copy of this book was given to me by my boyfriend who works with the author. This is my honest review.
I loved the story. It kept me interested and wanting to read more. I was thoroughly impressed with the knowledge the author had regarding the legal process and massage therapy. (The author is a former massage therapist, so no surprise that he had knowledge in that area, but still impressive nonetheless.) I was angry, I was sad, I was shocked. I was happy when things started looking up for Daniel. I was very sad and a little annoyed at the ending; I know all books can't have happy endings, but it killed me to know that finally, FINALLY, everything was going good for Daniel, only for him to die. That broke my heart.
I think the author did a good job of tying up loose ends at the end of the book, except for... what happened to Nadia? She didn't come to the funeral and there was no mention of her beyond a certain point in the book. I understand her role in the story, but I would have loved to know where she was and what she was thinking during all the proceedings.
Minus a star for the editing and grammar. There were a lot of missing words and spelling errors ("have" when it was supposed to be "half," for example) missing commas and apostrophes, etc. That drove me a little crazy.
All in all, a great debut novel from Mr. Tavolacci.
