Oh, what a delightful read! I won't deny that I didn't wish to slap Dorothy a few times for her naïve attitude toward the guy who had too many women in his life, but even then the character roused some caring attitude in me. She believed his words because she wanted to believe them, and she didn't want to believe the opposite. And, given that she had staked every hope in her battered life on what he said was true, I can even forgive her the willful blindness. Not saying it was right to accept his kisses when she knew she wasn't the only girl getting them, though!
I did love her work and found it very interesting. The whole idea of making a map for the invasion based on pictures was something I wasn't aware of and was fascinating.
Wyatt was a neat hero. His good humor and his strong faith put me on his side right away, and it was a delight to watch him encourage all the best qualities in Dorothy. He's determined to be a man of honor, and when Dorothy challenges him on things like his decision not to contact family, he's humble about it.
The plot...oh, my! There were a couple of epic twists that had me on the edge of my seat. Who knew a little poking after an embezzler could lead to such a discovery? Whew!
Highly recommended, especially to lovers of WW2.

I did love her work and found it very interesting. The whole idea of making a map for the invasion based on pictures was something I wasn't aware of and was fascinating.

Wow…
Just… wow.
The whole story was brilliant. From a love triangle done right to deep faith journeys to familial estrangements and deaths to the fight for healing and reunion… all in the package of a WWII-era story... This novel really had it all.
And that finale! Goodness, I could gush… if I were willing to spoil the story.
But I’m not.
Just trust me: You will not regret reading this book when you experience the final few chapters, and particularly the final few paragraphs.

The only two things I took issue with were not enough to dock any stars at all. First, there was some betting among friends. This encourages gambling, which is a huge and problematic vice in society right now. Second, the hat on the cover is not the “tricorn hat” described within the story. I’m a stickler for covers matching the details of the story. However, the hat on the cover is cute… just not accurate.
Speaking of the cover, I must say that I absolutely adore the fact that Dorothy’s freckles were featured on the cover! You may have to look close to see them (check near her hairline), but the cover designer and/or makeup artist really nailed that detail perfectly. Somebody gets brownie points for that.
The gut-wrenching opening scene created immediate empathy for Wyatt, and it also secured a swift investment of my emotions into the story. The stakes were kept high and even raised throughout, which kept me on pins and needles and sometimes pacing my living room because I was too anxious for the characters to sit still.
This line touched my Texan heart: “Most of us Texans don’t take kindly to being called Yankees. We prefer to be called rebels.” Yes. Yes, we do, Wyatt Paxton. *wink*
This book kept me riveted from beginning to end, and the surprises came often and when I least expected them. I admired how Mrs. Sundin created a love triangle that, though obvious in how the reader should root, felt organic, realistic, and done well. This is a difficult “trope” for me to enjoy, yet this book was so well written that it soared to the top of my list of favorites by Sarah Sundin, nudging In Perfect Time down a spot.
Readers who have enjoyed WWII fiction by Cara Putman, Cathy Gohlke, and Tricia Goyer will love this first story in the Sunrise at Normandy trilogy.
Now to read book two!

Oh my heart! This was breathtaking, fun, and beautiful! I don't know why I worried I might not like this book. For one, almost everything I've read by Sarah Sundin has been phenomenal! From the new series, SUNRISE AT NORMANDY, The Sea Before Us may just be my new favorite from this author. Seriously, people ... this book! It reminded me why I love reading. Why I love Sarah Sundin's work. And why I love this era.

English native, Dorothy Fairfax and American, Wyatt Paxton both work with the Royal Navy. During this tumultuous time, and each with personal family issues, they form a beautiful friendship. But for various reasons, things began to crumble as their feelings deepen ...
All Sarah Sundin's novels are set during WWII, but she manages to make each unique and fantastic! Perhaps because of the research and authenticity she puts into her work! I'll admit, at the beginning of The Sea Before Us I was having a hard time getting into the story. But that quickly changed and I started flying through the pages as I became fully absorbed and invested in Wyatt and Dolly's lives.
I love them, these characters! Wyatt Paxton. *swoons* Okay, he's not as swoon-y as he is godly, gentle, protective, tender, mature, humorous, and just completely adorable! (That makes him swoon-y to me, hehe!) What a man. He had his struggles, for sure, but he pressed into the Lord through them and grew such strong character because of it. A Texan cowboy with a dark past but a sweet, sincere smile. His prayers. His tender pursuit of Dolly. He passion for God and His love. Eep! (Must stop fangirling now ... *grins unashamedly*)
Dorothy is a different story, but, oh, I grew to adore her as well. Her painful childhood and struggles with insecurity and feeling unloved tugged at my heart. Ah. I just want to spill out the whole book in my excitement and love of it ... but alas, I must not spoil it! Go read it, fellow historical-fiction lovers! *winks*
I simply can't wait to read more from this series. Meet more delightful characters. Find myself immersed in an era gone by. Experience pivotal historical happenings. Go on the sweetest and most soul-touching journeys of faith. Fall in love ... (for real, these two make the most adorable, marvelous couple.)
Ah yes. Sarah Sundin is a favorite author of mine. She writes with authenticity, beauty, humor, and grace. The situations and struggles she writes about are so believable! Her characters are so believable! ^_^ Her latest novels, including this one, have had an exciting bit of mystery. Her faith themes are raw and real and speak so much to me! I love an author who glorifies God and speaks the love of Jesus Christ in her fictional books.
I quite recommend!

Okay one thing.....YOU CANNOT END A BOOK LIKE THAT!! Okay yes, it did end on a happy note, but now we have to wait for another book to come out before we find out what happens next!! Why Sarah? Why?!?
This book will leave you in a mess of emotions! This is my first even Sarah Sundin book and I am very happy to say that it will not be my last! Everything from the characters to the plot was amazing!! The romance was simple and sweet. Although, Dorothy did frustrate me on something and it took her forever it figure out!! Wyatt was an amazing character and I cannot wait to read more about him in the next two books. I really cannot wait to find out what happens between him and his brothers.
I also really loved this book because I have a slightly weird obsession with WW1 and WW2. So, a Christian, romance, WW2 novel...... sign me up!! One of the great things about Sarah Sundin is that she only writes WW2 novels, so she knows the history inside and out. That is another thing that was great about this book was the accurate history. Yes, there are historical fiction books out there that are accurate but they came and go. Some are harder to find then others, so whenever I read a book that has accurate historical details I get really excited.
All in all, I am just really happy that I recieved the chance to read this amazing book and I cannot wait for the next one to come out!! Books like this help me with my patience!

I’m in love with this book! *cue excessive fangirling*
Once again, Sundin has delivered a story that stands apart from every other one I’ve read for a long time. Honestly, I don’t know how anyone can help but be utterly swept away. The characters, the plot, the setting … the raw emotion of it!
I was very nervous going into this book. I picked it up with trembling hands and a nauseous stomach and tried to read slowly. I loved all her other books, so starting a new series with new characters was frightening! I had no idea if I’d like this book as much as I had her other ones, and I didn’t want to be disappointed.
Well … I wasn’t disappointed! Not one bit. This book went beyond my expectations. It’s definitely one of my favorites of Sundin’s now.
I’m going to try to sit down and write a review that makes sense, but sometimes when you really love something, it’s hard to talk about it, so bear with me.
(Also, I need a paperback copy so bad it’s not even funny.) (Also, that cover is sooo amazing! I remember when it first got revealed, I literally squealed aloud. IT’S GORGEOUS AND BLUE AND THERE’A REDHEAD AND SHE HAS A FUNNY HAT!) (I want her funny hat.)
PLOT: 5/5
Brilliantly put together. The angst and adventure begins on page 1 and doesn’t let up until the end. When you read the prologue, you’ll understand. It’s a shocking beginning, but effective – it drags you into the story, and you are utterly and completed hooked. (I need to learn to write hooks like that!)
I felt like the plot never sagged or grew boring. Throughout, it was an adventure. At times, the technical details of the running of the war office, the Wrens, ranks, etc., was a little difficult to track, but I got it sorted. And all the details just made it real and authentic!
Also, I never saw the plot twists coming! Wow! Some plot twists are too twisty to unravel ahead of time, y’know?
I lived through this story with the characters. With Dorothy and Wyatt – and even the side characters, like Mr. Paxton and Dorothy’s friends. It was very attention-keeping.
CHARACTERS: 5/5

Dorothy/Dolly = the sweetest thing EVER. She reminds me of my best friend … except if my best friend were to totally restrain herself + be English (my best friend is sooo American it’s not even funny!) + SHE IS A REDHEAD WITH FRECKLES AAAAH I LOVE HER SOOO MUCH JUST ‘CAUSE OF THIS. #redheadpride
Dorothy’s character arc was also quite awesome. The lessons she had to learn were some girls today could definitely stand to hear! “Be yourself – everyone else is taken.” “To thine ownself be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, that thou canst be false to any man.”
Wyatt. His name is amazing. He is unashamedly Texan. He is sooo sweet. I love honesty in people – and he was probably one of the first truly honest characters I’ve ever come across! <3 It was refreshing and beautiful. (Especially him actually telling Dorothy about his feelings! Wyatt, if the thing with Dorothy doesn’t work out, I will marry you.) (Yes, I do realize he’s a fictional character.)
His character arc was very well-done, too. His ‘courtship’ of Dorothy was sooo adorable! I love how sweet and considerate he was. How could anyone not adore him? *glares at Dorothy for taking a whole book to figure it out* *not really ’cause otherwise the book would have been kinda boring*
I’m not sure how I feel about the rest of the books being about Wyatt’s brothers (neither of whom I really cared for from the bit we learn about in the story). I’m also deeply disappointed that we probably won’t be seeing more of Dorothy’s friends! I fell in love with them, especially Gwen. But … I guess I’ll recover. ;)

I loved how very English Dorothy was. I felt that was very well-done. I’m not English – so if I missed something not-English about her, forgive me – but I love basically everything English (especially, oh, pre-1960s), so I was pretty happy with that.
The descriptions were quite vivid, and, at the risk of sound repetitive, I was swept away! The book as a whole swept me away, of course, but the setting was a definite contributing factor.

There’s really nothing I could say in this section that I haven’t said in previous reviews of the author’s books. I feel like I know Sundin’s style pretty well now, so every time I start one of her books, I’m just like, “Right! That’s how she says that!” Like, I pick up on quirks and turns of phrases.
That may not make a lot of sense and probably sounds a little creepy. But I’m not a stalker. Reading someone’s books multiple times does not make you a stalker. To be a stalker, you’d have to follow them on Twitter and their newsletter and Goodreads … oh, wait. *eyes widen* :P
(I also find myself writing a little like her after I finish one of her books.) (And then have to correct myself because, hey, I gotta write like me, not like another author!)
CONTENT: 2/5
Language: n/a
Violence: it’s set during WW2. Though most of it takes place in London, the place is badly blown up and the dangers of air raids are very real.
Sexual: falling and love and all that jazz. Several kisses, a couple fairly detailed. Dorothy goes out with a jerk who has multiple girlfriends and is just … a jerk.
Other: a friend of mine has a manic fear of throwing up, so I’m going to mention that there’s some throwing up in this novel. :P
I’d recommend 13 or 14+ for the spoiler (involves an adulterous affair, no details given and only talked about briefly + the angst the comes from this), but otherwise, it’s fairly clean.
OVERALL: 5/5
I NEED TO READ THIS AGAIN. But I don’t want to reread the review copy (I feel like eARCs are meant to be read once and then discarded? It’s a funny quirk of mine), so I’m gonna have to buy a paperback copy.
Honestly, this was just so good that I don’t have words to describe it! And I know I’m repeating myself, but some things are worth repeating. Get yourself a copy!
(Also: Dear Mrs. Sundin, I promise I am not a creepy stalker. I just really enjoy good books. I promise. *crosses heart*)

Violence: it’s set during WW2. Though most of it takes place in London, the place is badly blown up and the dangers of air raids are very real.
Sexual: falling and love and all that jazz. Several kisses, a couple fairly detailed. Dorothy goes out with a jerk who has multiple girlfriends and is just … a jerk.
Other: a friend of mine has a manic fear of throwing up, so I’m going to mention that there’s some throwing up in this novel. :P
I’d recommend 13 or 14+ for the spoiler (involves an adulterous affair, no details given and only talked about briefly + the angst the comes from this), but otherwise, it’s fairly clean.
OVERALL: 5/5
I NEED TO READ THIS AGAIN. But I don’t want to reread the review copy (I feel like eARCs are meant to be read once and then discarded? It’s a funny quirk of mine), so I’m gonna have to buy a paperback copy.
Honestly, this was just so good that I don’t have words to describe it! And I know I’m repeating myself, but some things are worth repeating. Get yourself a copy!

This is the first Sarah Sundin book I've read. I've seen a lot of reviews of her other books and she is highly recommended so I thought I'd read one and see what all the fuss is all about. I am so glad I did as I was not disappointed at all! My attention was held captivated in this historical novel taking place in 1944 . It takes place in the stressful days before D-Day. Why is it that women want the bad guy, is he better looking,more exciting,what? This is how it is for Dorothy . But then there is sweet and ordinary guy Wyatt who just seems to be biding his time. He doesn't " want her crumbs,he wants the whole loaf of bread". I don't blame the guy either. Lots of fascinating history here and the author did a great job of describing it. Wonderful and believable interaction between the main characters.
I look forward to reading the second book in the Sunrise at Normandy series.

I’ve been told for quite a while now that I need to read a Sarah Sundin book, since I’ve had a couple of her books on my TBR, but still haven’t read them.
Well, I’ve checked that box!
This start to a brand-new series interest me because of our main girl Dorothy’s job. She takes older pictures from others’ vacations of set places to create a visual map of the area their soldiers will be fighting.
I’ve read so many World War II books and while all of them have had the true realness of that time period, I never personally thought about all the plans and planning that went behind all of the attacks. I found “The Sea Before Us” to be very eye opening in that regard.
I will admit that I got very lost and boggled down at times because of all of the military and group terms and numbers (not to mention all the ranks), but I was able to follow along decently. Those highly interested in those topics would probably find all of that more interesting than I did. ;)
For our characters: I have to say that the Prologue really took me by surprise and I figured out quickly that the next to books in this series will be about Wyatt’s brothers. As for that Texan boy, I really liked his character development shown throughout this entire book. His actions and feelings in a “back-to-square-one” kind of way felt very natural.
For Dorothy. Poor, dear, sweet, Dorothy. My heart literally hurt reading about Dorothy trying to change herself and act different just for a guy. Honey, no, please, you’re worth so much more than that! That cad made my skin crawl and I was ready to give him the boot the moment he was introduced. I really did want to take Dorothy by her shoulders and shake her many times, to be completely honest. It felt it took her forever to see that how she was acting for a guy wasn’t right, but I was happy to see her true self eventually come to the pages and those around her.
While I really enjoyed all the Spiritual Content (Wyatt’s faith and him living it out in front of Dorothy was a favorite part of mine), I do have to say that I was disappointed with all the kissing and romancey thoughts. I’m hoping the author’s other books aren’t so kissy.
One thing I was expecting to happen by the end of the story, didn’t happen. I’m thinking that the later books will have it and I’ll most likely try them out.

Definitely 4.5 stars for me. This was a great story of the behind the scenes making of D-Day.
This is the story of Dorothy Fairfax, a WREN in the Royal Navy, and Wyatt Paxton, a sailor with the US Navy, who work together through maps and photographs to get a better look at how the beaches of Normandy look to make their D-Day attack. Though both are running from different life events, Dorothy running towards what she thinks she wants in life, and Wyatt from his family. They meet planning the attack, each with their own faults, but both with the ability to bring each out of those faults. Dorothy thought she needed fun and spontaneous Lawrence Eaton, a friend of her brothers from childhood, to make up for the love she lost from her mother, brothers, and father, to make up for the kind of marriage she saw her parents have, and because girlhood crushes are so blinding. What she really needed was the acceptance for who she was, to accept that she was beautiful in her own, and that fun and spontaneous is not always what you need. Wyatt Paxton ran after tragedy, didn't keep in touch with his family afterwards, and thought he needed to payback his deceits before he could ask for forgiveness. He knew he had God's forgiveness, but self-forgiveness is much more difficult to accept.
I loved these characters and how much they needed each other to show that they did have faults, but those faults were only in their eyes, that in the eyes of the Lord they were perfect. Dorothy didn't need fun and exciting and to cover up God's perfection, she needed stability, support, and love for who she was. Wyatt knew he had God's forgiveness, but it was Dorothy who told him he needed to at least make amends with this family, that maybe they have also forgiven him and that punishing himself was not the way to get it.
This was a great beginning to the build-up to the Battle of Normandy, a time I knew and have heard about, but not so much what went on behind the scenes to prepare for this invasion. It was fascinating to learn how the WRENS took pictures and maps to build new battle plans, and how much influence they really had to this epic time. I cannot wait to read the rest of the trilogy.

I've seen this book floating around Goodreads, and I was very excited about getting a copy. This is the first book I've read by Sarah Sundin and it will definitely not be the last. I absolutely fell in love with this story.
This book captured my attention immediately. If a book has anything to do with a war I'm in. ;) The first scene was action packed and quickly pulled me in. Wyatt's past with his family definitely added to the story. There was actually a good bit of suspense in this book ( along with a mystery ) that I didn't think would be in it but really enjoyed.
The characters in this book are so loveable. Wyatt and Dorothy brought out the best of each other. I love how Dorothy felt free to completely be herself around him. They both had stuff that they could relate to, and they were both able to become stronger people through their relationship. I actually really liked Lawrence too. ;) I thought his personality was a good fit to the story. Wyatt's friend Jack was also a favorite of mine.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I thought that the plot was thought out really well, and absolutely loved the writing. I definitely recommend this book!

This debut novel of the Sunrise at Normandy series by Sarah Sundin continues her excellent historical fiction writing. Focusing on World War II and the events that led up to the D-Day invasion, it features Dorothy who is a "Wren" or member of the Women's Royal Naval Service in England and Wyatt who is an officer in the US Navy. This novel is a wonderful mix of history, mystery, romance, and twists and turns. It captures the feeling of England at war and places the reader right there in the midst of the fray with all the sounds, smells, and sights. The plot is thrilling as the events build towards the combined D-Day Invasion. Sundin's obvious incredibly detailed research into the events and the battles is amazing.
The characters were very well written. Dorothy was involved in helping map the area and terrain in which the invasion would take place. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about mapmaking for war and how the English sent in their photos to help Dorothy's group understand every little detail about the area of Normandy. Dorothy learned a lot about herself through her relationship with Wyatt and with Lawrence. With Wyatt she could truly be herself and with Lawrence she played a role to make him happy. As she grew in her faith, thanks to Wyatt's help, she realized that God made her just like she was supposed to be not like she thought she should be. Wyatt's faith was strong, but Dorothy helped him realize that when he accepted God's grace and forgiveness he was also supposed to forgive himself. Lawrence was very self-absorbed and was the model "bad boy." All of them seemed to realize, over time, the importance of believing in yourself.
I hated to see this story end and am hoping that the rest of the series will feature Wyatt's two brothers and the roles they played in WWII as well as seeing the 3 brothers reunited.

Golly, where do I begin?
I have anticipated this book for so long, and now that I've read it, I just want to dive back into it and get to know these characters all over again!
The story hooks you from page one! I promise that after you read the prologue, you won't want to put this book down!
The thing that interested me about this new book by Sarah Sundin was that one of our protagonists was an American sailor from down in Texas, and the the female protagonist was a girl from proper England. I just fell in love with this idea, and Sarah did an excellent job executing it.
Wyatt Paxton is a sailor who comes from an estranged family down in Texas. His past eats away at him, even though Jesus has washed away his sins, forgiven him, Wyatt has a rough time forgiving himself. He is a strong character, made strong because of his ability to lean on and trust in the Lord. After everything he's been through, he can have a peace within him because of Jesus' sacrifice for us.
Dorothy Fairfax is redheaded, freckle-faced girl, serving in the Womens Royal Naval Service (WRNS, where the name Wrens came from). The story was very interesting, displaying some of the ways that the plans for the Normandy Invasion were shaped. I for one was intrigued by the idea of Dorothy's job. I've never looked into the research and planning that went into the biggest amphibious assault of all time, always looked into the actual invasion, the men who fought and died to see its fruition.
And, as always, I am in awe of how much research Mrs. Sundin puts into her books. The military terms and tactics sometimes go over my head. I'm a tad bit familiar with it all, but not that knowledgeable about it. No other author I have read has put so much planning and work into a fiction book. It amazes me and it makes me happy that someone cares so much about the men (and women, too) who died and sacrificed for our country that she would do such a vast amount of research and hard work, to make sure no mistakes are made.
This may be one of my top favorites by Sarah Sundin (although, mind you, nothing will ever top 'A Memory Between Us.' Jack Novak stole my heart three years ago and hasn't given it back yet, haha!)

I have anticipated this book for so long, and now that I've read it, I just want to dive back into it and get to know these characters all over again!
The story hooks you from page one! I promise that after you read the prologue, you won't want to put this book down!
The thing that interested me about this new book by Sarah Sundin was that one of our protagonists was an American sailor from down in Texas, and the the female protagonist was a girl from proper England. I just fell in love with this idea, and Sarah did an excellent job executing it.
Wyatt Paxton is a sailor who comes from an estranged family down in Texas. His past eats away at him, even though Jesus has washed away his sins, forgiven him, Wyatt has a rough time forgiving himself. He is a strong character, made strong because of his ability to lean on and trust in the Lord. After everything he's been through, he can have a peace within him because of Jesus' sacrifice for us.
Dorothy Fairfax is redheaded, freckle-faced girl, serving in the Womens Royal Naval Service (WRNS, where the name Wrens came from). Nice start to a new WWII series. I especially loved that the main male character is from Texas, graduated from my alma mater and plays baseball. The author was spot on with details about Texas and Texans.
While the story begins in Texas with a disagreement between two of three brothers, much of the story takes place in London. The role of the navy and wrens leading up to and on D Day is the backbone of the story.
I look forward to continuing the series where the focus will be on the Army Air Force.

I'm not sure why I left this book sitting on my "currently-reading" shelf for ever, because I gobbled it up in a matter of days and could not put it down. I mean, it's a Sarah Sundin WWII romance, so there's nothing surprising there.
This book was just awesome. Pure delight from start to finish.
I loved, loved, loved the hero! He was so sweet and gentle and bright as the Texan sun. Aww he was cute. And Dorothy was wonderful too, and I thought they had the most charming romance.
I also really liked learning about her job - she was in charge of analyzing photographs of key areas to look for discrepancies and signs of enemy presence on British soil. It was very interesting.
I'm reviewing this so late that I don't remember enough of the particulars of the story to do it justice in this miserable review, but I remember really loving it and being very entranced with it while I was reading it.
Solid 4.5 stars!

Wyatt had me from page one. He was more of the quieter hero, the one who made terrible mistakes, was overly-protective… YET… he learned. He was a hero with flaws, but not without progress. He understood forgiveness, but still had to learn it on other levels. He understood the importance of God’s love more than human love. I totally liked Wyatt.
But this story was only half of him. The other half was Dorothy. She made me want to both knock sense into her and kindly point her in the right direction. Her character was very well done. She was naïve in some points, but believably so.
So when you combine two amazing characters like Wyatt and Dorothy into a story, you’ve got a pretty good start. And then, there was WWII. Sundin does such a fantastic job at capturing the inner workings of various groups in the WWII. I find that very intriguing.
The spiritual side of the story was very solid. Wyatt was a firm believer in Jesus Christ, and he honestly desired for others to follow Him too. In fact, I was impressed, because Wyatt yearned more for Dorothy to have a right relationship with God than for them to be together as a couple.
For conservative readers, there were a lot of kisses and romance was kind of a strong thread in the story. Unlike some of Sundin’s other books, there wasn’t detail on compromising moral situations. There was a rather shocking revelation of a side character, but it didn’t go into detail and was portrayed as the heartache that it was.

Sarah Sundin is truly a master of historical fiction. I have experienced it once before when I had the privilege of reading one of her books, and this one was no different; it did not disappoint. She goes into such detail about the period and the tasks of the military that I was blown away, and I walked away from the book with so much more knowledge than I had before. Getting to be immersed in such an environment and knowing that it was incredibly accurate was not an experience I will soon forget. Sarah Sundin definitely does her research and it shows so well in this book.
The story itself was well done and I enjoyed it. I am a hardcore Anglophile, so the fact that the book was set in London for the most part with a main character who was so thoroughly British made me so happy. Dorothy was so well done, that even her mannerisms, phrases, speech, and even her internal thoughts were so full of English mannerisms that I loved it. Set in the backdrop of World War II and full of historical details, the slight hint of mystery and the romantic tension made this a page turner for sure.
The characters, for the most part, were loveable. Wyatt was my favorite. I could relate to him the most. His struggles and his thought patterns were so realistic and relatable. The one part where this felt a little off for me story wise was with Dorothy. I didn’t get a good reason until at least one-third of the book in as to why she was acting the way she was, which only left me frustrated at her instead of rooting for her. Thankfully, that was resolved later in the book and the reasoning explained, so that definitely helped. In general, Dorothy isn’t a character that I connected with all that much, but I was able to sympathize with her later in the story.
The battle scenes were so well described, I felt like I was there. I knew exactly what was going on, and that was so awesome and enjoyable. It is so exciting when an author makes history come to life, and Sarah Sundin did that. I look forward to hearing more about the Paxton family in the upcoming books.
This is a book that I think anyone with an interest in World War II would enjoy. The depth of character development on Wyatt would interest men as well as women.

I knew I was in for a treat when I saw this book coming out. I always expect a book that fits well in a setting and brings to life historical details—this book does just that. Right along with it, are fabulous characters who caught my attention from the beginning. Especially Wyatt's opening scene!
Dorothy and Wyatt are well-developed characters who have their own share of troubles, yet strengthen each other in their weakness'. I could understand Dorothy's fear of a “quiet” man and understand her struggles. I wasn't keen about her interest with Lawrence, as I felt like it weakened the beautiful relationship with Dorothy and Wyatt. It is a love-triangle, but not quite as awful as other I've read. There is some miscommunication throughout that got frustrating, but thank goodness for happy endings and explanations!
As the time nears for D-Day I grew fidgety with anticipation. Wow, talk about suspenseful! I also loved the bit of mystery with Mr. Fairfax's company, and the trip to Edinburgh. Superbly described! The ending was satisfactory, although the last scene was slightly too sappy for my liking. There are several kisses shared throughout this book, most none detail, but one in general was a bit too detailed for my liking. I liked how the relationship came together—the one couple focusing on each other and not just feelings.
Overall the faith content is excellent and extremely uplifting for those striving to serve the Lord. There is a brief focus on forgiving oneself which I wasn't a fan of, but otherwise I have no complaint on the spiritual aspect in this book. Very beautiful!
Lastly, I loved the little British tidbits in this book. Not overly done, but enough to feel a different country. Very well done there!
This is a book that will pull you in from the beginning and keep you reading until the end!

I just finish another of Sarah Sundin’s books and like her others it does not disappoint, a mix of history and a bit of romance, and the anticipation of a battle. With this book, there is an all-out combined effort to take down Germany, and we are heading toward D-Day.
The author has given us two strong characters in Wyatt and Dorothy, and we get up close and personal with them, learning about their family and their lives growing up, and the hurts that have made them what they are today. We are also given a mystery of possible embezzlement, and end up with a bomb shell, I never saw it coming!
With these characters, we walk the streets of London, and visit Scotland, and then we are bombing the beach at Normandy, and we can almost feel the vibrations of those guns. Through it all we hope for survival and God’s Graces as broken lives are put back together.
Now I see another brother has a book coming with a teasing few pages at the end of this wonderful read, and I will be waiting for that one!

After reading The Sea Before Us, Sarah Sundin has become an author I’ll be on the lookout for. Prior to reading this story, I had only read a novella by Sundin. How imprudent of me to wait so long to enjoy her writing over the span of an entire novel! A mistake I plan to rectify quickly by downloading her backlist to my iPhone.
What I relished most was the effortlessness of her storytelling. Sundin’s portrayal of the build up to Normandy was delivered with the gravity and respect it deserved. It allowed her readers to feel the pall hanging over England and the hopeful expectation the war would soon turn. So much rich history is woven into the story, yet the plot is never weighed down by it.
Being a veteran myself, I felt a special connection with Dorothy in regards to her sense of duty. She saw herself and her role as vital to the war effort and she maintained the highest level of professionalism, even while swooning over Lieutenant Commander Eaton.To me, her character spoke of how women can display strength without sacrificing their femininity.
While Dorothy is blinded by Mr. Wrong, Mr. Oh-So-Right enters the scene in the form of Wyatt Paxton. I had compassion for this character following the events depicted in the prologue. Despite his poor choices starting in 1941 until he met Dorothy in 1944, he never lost my affections. Among his most noteworthy qualities were his humility and his confidence in Christ’s atoning work. In fact, repentance and reconciliation are strong themes in this work.
Whether you are on the lookout for a great historical romance or a novel with a solid Christian message, The Sea Before Us is an excellent choice. I will undoubtedly recommend it to book clubs over the course of the year. Purchase a copy for yourself and one for a friend!

5 “Full loaf” Stars!
Sarah Sundin I do wish there is a way to demonstrate a standing ovation when writing a review. Because that is the expression of my heart. An absolutely beautiful, creative and captivating writer! This is an absolutely fantastic novel! My first read by you but not my last!
Over the past two years I have venture into the historical Christian fiction world and I have started to really enjoy many authors. One thing I have lacked though is an appropriation for the history that is included in the stories. However after reading this book how can your heart not be awakened to the lead up to the D-Day invasion?
I loved both of the main characters. Their individual journey and their journey together. Although they both could be a little immature and annoying at times but who isn’t?
I really enjoyed the similarities to some of the bible stories for example Jacob and Esau, Cain and Able, Joseph and his brothers and the prodigal Son. There is probably more tbh!

“My mama says women need to cry every once in a while. Washes away all the weakness so you can stay strong. Always let a lady cry, she says.”
I also give 5 stars to Sarah Zimmerman for an excellent audiobook performance.

WWII Christian historical fiction. I’ve been meaning to read this author for awhile now and finally decided to start with the Sunrise at Normandy series that was published a few years ago. It’s a fantastic story. I loved the message of the prodigal son, the fact that we are all held in God’s hands and that we can always choose to do the right thing. Wyatt and Dorothy were both great characters. I’m definitely going to be reading the rest of this series.

Yet another stunning novel by Sarah Sundin! The Sea Before Us was everything I hoped for and more. Sarah managed to weave a sweet romance between the bitterness of war and the disillusionment of misplaced expectations. With a prologue that will reel you in and many unanswered questions about the Fairfax family, this story of forgiveness, both human and Devine, as well as characters riddled with flaws and brimming with honesty and potential, will hold you captive until the end.
As we follow the stories of American naval officer Lt. Wyatt Paxton and "Wren" (Women's Royal Naval Service) officer Dorothy Fairfax, the picture of London before D-day becomes clear and vivid. Wyatt, a Texas boy at heart, finds himself working in London preparing for the "big day" alongside Dorothy who has eyes only for a handsome officer she's known since childhood.
Tensions rise, both on the war field and off, but the thing I loved the most about this story was the realness of Sarah's characters. It's not easy to create believable issues (both past and present) without things becoming too heavy to bear or too fake to trust. Sarah uses her characters to point out fundamental truths of the heart as much as she shows the raw and honest struggle with forgiveness.
I flew through this book not only due to the easy style of Sarah's writing (something I've always admired about her books) but because the plot was well paced and the character struggles easy to believe. The setting only enhanced the experience and left me feeling like I'd walked out of my own personal experience of WWII.
Highly recommended to those who love Christian historical fiction, sweet romance, and fans of all things WWII. You will find this book chocked full of realistic detail and a sense of the time period that will transport you back in time to a lesser known aspect of D-day.
I'm already looking forward to book 2!

I knew this book was going to be amazing, but it still blew me away. Wow!!!! Just, wow!
This reminded me a lot of the old John Wayne war movies. Love story subplot, big battle main plot. Lots of military action. I grew up studying a lot of military history, so the lingo wasn't difficult for me. I've even toured one of the destroyers the author also toured as research.
Dorothy drove me nuts for most of the book, but the author does a great job in making sure her reasons for doing what she's doing are very clear. Wyatt is just the biggest sweetheart ever. Seriously.
To top it all off, the narrator for the audiobook does an EXCELLENT job. It is no easy feat to master both a Texas accent and a British accent in the same book and switch flawlessly between them. Even more impressive, at one point the narrator even managed to sound like a British lady attempting to fake a Texas drawl. I don't know about you, but it is really hard to fake a British accent faking a Texas accent.
I highly recommend this book, and now I really, really, really, really can't wait for the next book in the series!

One of the many things I enjoy about a Sarah Sundin book is the consistency. I can pick up any of her novels and know that I will enjoy it . . . not just the setting (WWII is one of my favourite time periods about which to read), but the characters, and especially the Christian message.
I absolutely adored Dorothy and Wyatt. They were flawed enough to be 'real', but also likeable enough that you wanted to root for them. I also didn't end up wanting to throw either of them off a cliff for making ridiculous choices. Yes, the choices they made weren't always the best, but you could clearly see why they would have made that choice . . . what their mindsets were. The way they each grew was wonderful as well, and I got a bit choked up when it finally 'clicked' with Dorothy what it meant to be in the Lord's hands.
I also really appreciate the fact that the romance grew from friendship. I strongly dislike the trend of 'insta-love' stories, and love when an author takes the time for her characters to forge a relationship that is built on principles of friendship, and trust.

I absolutely adored Dorothy and Wyatt. They were flawed enough to be 'real', but also likeable enough that you wanted to root for them. I also didn't end up wanting to throw either of them off a cliff for making ridiculous choices. Yes, the choices they made weren't always the best, but you could clearly see why they would have made that choice . . . what their mindsets were. The way they each grew was wonderful as well, and I got a bit choked up when it finally 'clicked' with Dorothy what it meant to be in the Lord's hands.
I also really appreciate the fact that the romance grew from friendship. I strongly dislike the trend of 'insta-love' stories, and love when an author takes the time for her characters to forge a relationship that is built on principles of friendship, and trust.
I am so excited to read the rest of this series!

With a fantastic start to a new series, Sarah Sundin has me invested in a whole new set of lives that will forever be changed by the events surrounding D-Day! I could hardly set this book down and I can tell you that book two can not arrive soon enough for me!
The main characters really captured me, along with the time and place that this book was set in. Both Dorothy and Wyatt had things from their pasts that definitely impacted their present decisions. The personal and spiritual growth in both of these characters from the beginning to the end of this novel was impressive. Their romance was wonderful and the obstacles that they had to overcome made for a captivating story. This book made me feel like I was in the thick of the action and I am so anxious to read the next book in the series when it releases!

I adore Sarah Sundin's writing. She is a master at bringing the world of World War II to life in a realistic fashion with memorable characters. I look forward to reading every single book she writes. With her newest addition to her new series, The Sea Before Us, I fell in love with the story instantly.
Her research doesn't shine on the page. Instead, the words and research flow together to make a seamless story. I love being caught up in the action and thrown for a loop while watching important events in history unfold. In The Sea Before Us, Sundin takes us for a ride during the battle at Normandy. I really didn't know much about the battles. I have heard of the fighting but haven't learned a lot. Sundin created the battles, so I wanted to learn more.
The plot is different. I really enjoy how the story builds up to the battle at Normandy. It doesn't start there and just keep showing us a history lesson from a point of view of two people who are at war. Instead, she introduces us to Dorothy and Wyatt and allows me to become consumed with their normal life and watch their hurts and flaws fall on the page.
Speaking of Dorothy and Wyatt, this is another couple I loved spending time with. Dorothy is a hurting woman who believes no really loves her. She evens believes the perfect guy for her really wouldn't love the real her, so she puts on make-up and pretends to be someone she isn't. Dorothy transforms by the end of the novel and learns she can be loved and deserves it.
Now Wyatt. I don't honestly gush about the romance in a novel. I can't remember one except Sundin's other novel Blue Skies Tomorrow with Raymond and Helen. Wyatt grew on me. I really started to sigh when he spent time with Dorothy. He knew how to control his emotions and not come on too strong when she declares to love someone else. He loved Dorothy for who she was, not what she pretended to be. There is a kiss near the end of the novel that I swooned. It was perfect, and just what the moment needed. I applaud Sundin for creating a moment I won't soon forget.
Most historical or contemporary romances usually end with a proposal or a wedding. Not Sundin. She leaves the readers grasping for straws but satisfied the romance is going to work out. I'm grateful she does this. Not every story has to have a happy ever after moment with a pretty bow.
Overall, Sarah Sundin's The Sea Before Us is definitely a top-notch historical romance novel with enduring characters, a fascinating plot, and a romance I want to re-read and sigh. If you enjoy historical fiction of any era, Sundin is the author to enjoy. I can't recommend her novels enough. Another book to add to my favorites pile.

This book was absolutely amazing! I didn’t want to put it down. I was captivated the whole time. I loved the characters,the plot,the story line,and the romance!
Wyatt Paxton is definitely swoon worthy! He was amazing. I loved how he was always talking about his faith and encouraging Dorothy in her faith. I liked how he learned from his mistakes and made the right decisions in the end. I really liked his character,and I’m very excited to see more of him in the rest of the series.
Dorothy Fairfax is a great heroine. I loved her work with the WRENS,and I think they are so cool. I loved how she took care of her father. That was so sweet. I also loved her Scottish Terrier,Bonnie Prince Charlie. I liked seeing her grow in her faith for the Lord throughout this book,and she trusted the Lord.
Dorothy and Wyatt were so cute together. There was this one scene that I just loved of them together,but that’s all I’ll say. So, I won’t spoil. That ending was great,but I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more of these two!
I also loved all of the side characters. The ones you are supposed to like,of course, but others I was very upset with. Johanna Katin was a good friend to Dorothy and had good advice on men/dating. Dorothy’s WREN friends were fun. I also liked Wyatt’s Navy friends. I especially liked Jack.

What an engaging read! WWII stories will always have a special place in my heart and this is another I can add to my list of favourites. I enjoyed seeing the main characters heal and grow in their faith all while facing the turbulent war years and working with the British Navy in preparation for D-Day. The sense of time and place was great, and I enjoyed gaining a deeper understanding of both the British and American war effort in relation to the Normandy Landings/Operation Neptune.
This book did feature a love triangle which I typically dislike, hence the loss of half a star, but I do feel it was a love triangle done right. Dorothy’s crush (ahem, slight obsession) with a player of a man and her initial obliviousness to Wyatt’s integrity really irritated me, but I also understood why she couldn’t see past her attraction to said player. I didn’t like it, but it made sense taking Dorothy’s past into consideration. Although the love triangle wasn't my favourite, I did like the "friends-to-more" nature of the romance.
I enjoyed how grief was explored through Dorothy’s father. Wyatt was very much a part of her father’s healing, with his gentle steadfastness and heart for the hurting. The storyline regarding Dorothy’s father and her dead mother went in a direction I wasn’t expecting! Wyatt had to face his own pain and shame from his past. I think the author did a beautiful job in portraying his coming to forgive himself and accepting God’s forgiveness as well.
On a different note, I love love LOVED the several references to popular music from that time. Give me all the 1940s jazz!
I’m so glad I read this book and am looking forward to reading the next two in the trilogy, both of which feature Wyatt’s estranged brothers!

This is my first time reading a Sarah Sundin novel and I enjoyed this story immensely! The author's knowledge of WWII military action is really impressive, and her main characters, American Lieutenant Wyatt Paxton and his lovely British co-worker, "Wren" officer, Dorothy Fairfax, have great chemistry together! Even with secrets from the past haunting them both, making any relationship beyond friends seem impossible, Sundin deftly weaves her tale into a satisfying conclusion.
A compelling faith story full of history, action, intrigue, and romance, The Sea Before Us is a novel I would happily recommend to readers who love Christian historical fiction!

I love this series so much. It's a beautiful series about the brokenness of life and the consequences of the choices we make and the sins we commit, but God's amazing redemption.
