Strangers become allies. Lovers become enemies. And a destiny formed before birth unfolds.
Sawyer spent most of her life hunting the very thing she has now become. No longer the Watcher she once was, Sawyer struggles to make sense of her new identity. Though she now has the powers of a Carbon, she is also tied to the control Coleman has over all of his creations.
Desperate for help and answers, Sawyer travels to the United Isles with Max in search of an ally. Not only must she learn to harness her new abilities, she must find a way to mend a broken heart…if her past doesn’t kill her first.
The epic journey continues, and the war for the human race draws ever closer. Join the resistance in the next chapter of the Watcher Series.
As an avid reader from a young age, it only made sense that one day I would write my own stories. I grew up in a small town in central Alberta Canada where there wasn't much to do but read, cheer on the Oilers and attempt to enjoy the long winter months.
After high school, I attended college where I played 4 years of college basketball and eventually went into Recreation as a career. I stayed at the college I graduated from, before making the move to full-time writing.
My first book series, The WATCHER Series, was self-published in 2017 and later picked up by Aelurus Publishing to be republished. The three-book series, along with a second four-book series EVERMARKED, set in the same world have been released in 2020.
Currently, along with finishing up the above series, I am working on my first YA Fantasy word titled THE SIX THRONES (check out a sneak peek in my blog at www.ajeversley.com) which I hope to have out soon as well!

I instantly, became a fan of this series and author from the first book. Luckily, my love did not stop with this second book. Although, I must admit that the story and action really seemed to start at the half way mark. Up until this point, it was mainly focused on Sawyer trying to find her way in the world now as a Carbon versus a Watcher. Not that I was really complaining as I like Sawyer. Being a Carbon made Sawyer more human (funny) and stronger at the same time. I use funny as Carbons are not human.
While, I would like to say that I was upset with Kenzie, I had no ill feelings towards him. He was as much a victim as Sawyer is of Coleman. Which, I hope that Coleman receives justice soon. The romance between Kenzie and Sawyer was still there but complicated.
As I said, previously, the second half of the story was filled with more action. Plus, we see Sawyer use some of her Carbon abilities. Finally, not to give anything away but the ending has left me anxiously awaiting the next book. Calling all fans of sci-fi and dystopian. You have to check out this series. It is filled with awesome goodness!
This is the second book in the series, and it's even better than the first.
Sawyer is in a bad place. She's lost her family, her friends, her home and her humanity. Now, she's underway to a foreign place, has to rediscover who she is as a Carbon, and should save what's left of the human race in the process by destroying the one man nobody seems to be able to destroy.
The author does not readdress any information found in the first book but lets this second book take off where the first one left off. In other words, it is not a stand alone and needs to be read as a series.
Like the first book, this one never leaves room for a boring moment. The tension and stakes are high, and action awaits around every bend. The world is again easy to sink into and comes to life through sights, smells and sounds. The United Islands is a delightful contrast to the dark scenes, which have followed the story up until this point, and it works well to emphasis the changes Sawyer herself makes in this book.
Sawyer, in the beginning, is still harsh and untouchable. Her thorny attitude makes her hard to completely like and sympathize with, but as the plot unfolds, she gains a softer side, which makes her more enjoyable than before. This character development seemed more natural to me in this book, and made Sawyer more human, although she is no longer human at all.
The plot is filled with twists, layers and unexpected turns, making it a read which is hard to set down. The tension with Kenzie opens the door to all sorts of possibilities and makes it impossible to guess what the outcome of everything is going to be on that end. Another hero scoots onto center stage too, keeping the romance side interesting and uncertain. The evil threat thickens and all sorts of new discoveries make it clear that Sawyer still has quite the battle before it all comes to an end.
Unfortunately, book three isn't out yet, but if it's anything like these first two stories, it's going to be a real treat.
I received a complimentary copy and loved it so much that I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.
Sawyer has lost everyone and everything that ever mattered to her. Now she is on her way to a strange, new place with total strangers, including the irritating Max Murphy, son of her former boss. Sawyer is so broken. She can't often eat nor sleep. She has no desire to continue to live. The only reason she has to live is to keep Coleman from winning! Coleman is relentless in creating more Carbons - more killing machines. The action from 'Watchers' continues. There are several turns of events but yet more of the same, brutal war! Who will succeed and who will fail? Will entire humanity finally be extinguished? In this 2nd part of this series, there is a crisis leading toward the final conclusion of the third book. Although, not as exciting as the first book, this second book still captures the reader's interest and is a good lead into the concluding book of the series. It just feels slightly repetitious of the first book in the thematic sense. The writing is done well, except for a few grammatical errors, and the characters, plus the scenes, are described in a way it is easily visualized by he reader. It leaves the leader to feel the conclusion of this portion of the story, yet leaves him/her ready for the final conclusion. I offer a For Stars rating of book two of the Watchers' series. I was gifted this book with no request for a positive review. This is my honest review.
Sawyer is now a Carbon and on a ship to the United Isles to find out more about being a Carbon and how to possibly break her bond with Coleman. She is with Max but she wants nothing to do with him, she would rather morn her loss of friends and family and to figure out how to get her revenge on Coleman. It’s coming down to a battle for humanity and Sawyer is going to be the key.
First, I want to say that Carbon jumps right into the story we left at the end of Watcher. I don’t recommend reading this as a stand-alone story, you can but you will miss a lot of the background. I have to say that I noticed that even though Watcher was packed full of action. Carbon started out a lot slower and with more development of Sawyer and her situation.
I did like how Sawyer slowly started getting closer to Max. He was just trying to help her adapt to her new life. Although I’m not a big fan of love triangles I like how it is developing and how it highlights the story instead of hijacking it. Now the second half of the book took off, had some great twists and turns, and came to a crashing, cliff hanger of an ending. Although I liked Watcher more, I did enjoy Carbon and now I can’t wait for the third book.
I received Carbon from iRead Book Tours for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
Sawyer and a group of others fled their home and made their way to the United Isles. They are hoping to make a home here and Sawyer is hoping to learn how to tap into her Carbon abilities. That's all I'm saying in my summary because I'll spoil something!!
I should give this 4 stars because I loathe love triangles and tend to keep well away from them, but I can't, I have to give it the full 5 stars because it's just that good, even with a love triangle of sorts!!!
I loved Sawyer in the first book, and loved her even more here. She became the thing he hunted, and has to deal with that. The first bit of the book focuses on her trying to come to terms with this and all it entails. She never for one moment thought she would become a Carbon, but she shines as one, and I loved seeing her come into her abilities. It just made me like her more.
Coleman has control over Kenzie and he isn't who I grew to love in the first. I felt so sorry for him when he starts to realise some things!! My heart broke when he met Sawyer. I want to say why but I'm not spoiling anything! Even if he isn't the Kenzie of the first book, he is still a strong character and I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing where his story takes us.
The plot flowed nicely and the pacing was perfect. The descriptive writing made it easy to picture the Isles and the battles etc. I found myself lost in the world the author created and few through the audio. I need the next book ASAP though!!
In all, a excellent read, even if there is a love triangle!! ;) I can understand why there's one, I just wasn't happy about it. I urge you to check out the series!!
I love the dual narration and both narrators do an amazing job. Chelsea Stephens reads this with plenty of emotion and makes for an amazing Sawyer. The only thing I saw though was that her voices for the females are fairly similar! Steve Campbell also did an awesome job. He reads Kenzie so well and his voice for Max and Coleman were great. Can't wait to hear them in the next edition!!
I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
So first off I would advise reading Watcher before reading Carbon (Book Two in the Watcher Series) by AJ Eversley as the second book will be very confusing without the background information, character development, and plot line understanding gained from reading Watcher. I liked the fact that Sawyer Russo was still the main character even if she was no longer a Watcher, but instead a Carbon. I understand why she had to become a Carbon for the story line to progress onward, but I really liked her as a Watcher and I was sad to see her lose that. Sawyer may have changed, but unlike Katniss in the Hunger Games she never lost what made her Sawyer instead she maintained her personality and goals in the face of all the changes the she faced. Overall, I really enjoyed reading Carbon, but between the two Watcher was my favorite!
The Watcher series should be in any sci-fi reader’s “A” list of books to take seriously. It has everything you could want in a story. Great characters, lots of action, a foreboding outcome for the human race, evil dictator types forcing their vision of what the world should be, etc. “The Watcher” was book one and “Carbon” book two with a third book promised soon, but there are four character background books that shouldn’t be missed in between that will definitely add to the story. And since they’re only .99, they’re a must read in addition to the main books. I wholeheartedly recommend this series to anyone who loves great science fiction. I’m looking forward to book three coming soon!
My review is based on the audiobook. Sawyer's journey continues in Carbon and book 2 is just as thrilling if not more than the 1st book. The author has found the perfect mixture of action, suspense, romance and humor. I am invested in these characters and find myself cheering, cringing, laughing and booing as I read/listen. The narrator is fantastic bringing the characters and story to life. I am excited for Book 3 to see where the author takes the story next.
This series is becoming one of my favorite I cannot wait for the next book!! I have listened to them both in audio book form and the voices are great to listen to!the book is thrilling and exciting and I need more!!
This is an excellent book.Although part of a series it can be read as a stand-alone.I really enjoyed it it was fast-paced and suspenseful.Well worth reading.
An excellent second book from this exciting new series by AJ Eversley! A brilliant progression to the story & development of characters! A well written sci fi adventure that promises more! Great! I do recommend this & will look for more by this writer!
This series gets better and better! It is fantastic from all points of view. We have an interesting plot, really really strong characters that really evolve throughout the story and unexpected turn of events. Add to that a great narration and you have one amazing audiobook.
Sawyer goes though many changes. She hast to deal with being a Carbon and also has to face betrayal from those she loves. Her transformation is inside and out. The author has a beautiful way of showing both aspects of our main character and we get to analyze her inside out.
This second book is full of twists, as I was mentioning, not only when it comes to the battle for survival, but as well when it comes to the relationship between sawyer and Kenzie. I cannot wait to see how this will evolve. I love both of them, but I also want to see what will happen with the new …”addition” J
The narration is great! I have mentioned this in my review for book 1 as well, Chelsea Stephens and Steve Campbell give so much life to our characters. We can feel Sawyer’s rage and pain and Kenzie’s torment. I loved them so so much!
Now, please excuse me while I go take a breath after such an intense story and I will see you back with my review for the third book. I have no doubt it will be as great as the previous two. Happy reading!
I've been on a dystopian kick of late, so when I finished Watcher, I had to go right into Carbon, and I'm glad I did.
What started as a rather simple plot in Book One has gotten incredibly more complex, and yet it still makes sense, which is a testament to Ms. Eversley's writing. Sawyer, with all she's lost - up to and including her humanity - is a sympathetic (if not always likeable) character. She loses one love interest only to find another. Max is a very interesting character (and I read the novella about his origins concurrently with reading Carbon), and knowing his history gave that much more depth to the character.
There were moments when I felt like the plot was a little unwieldy, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will definitely read Book Three when it drops!
Carbon picks up almost immediately after Watcher ends, with Sawyer traveling to The United Isles in search of answers and help. Her travel companion, Max, is someone briefly introduced in book one.
One of the things I was hoping for with this book was the expansion of world-building, which was delivered more fully than in book one. I still wish we could have seen more, but that's just because I love the world Eversley has created so much that I feel like I'd always be wanting more.
The United Isles and the introduction of new characters were a significant change of pace from book one, where the action was almost non-stop. This gave more room for character development of Sawyer and Max, but there was still plenty going on to hold my interest. Sawyer saw a lot of character growth in this installment, with the help of an unlikely ally. Sawyer's grief and survivor guilt were handled with care and explored realistically and honestly. She went through a lot by the end of book one, so it was nice to see her begin to heal and find another part of herself beyond being a watcher.
The bright spot for me, even beyond Sawyer's growth and recovery, was Max, though. I liked his character from the very beginning of Carbon and only grew to adore him as the book went on. His background gives more insight into what happened to people who were left to fend for themselves, unlike Sawyer, who was in the compound. Max is a sweet cinnamon roll and I love him so much!
As I mentioned, there were additional characters introduced in this book, which helped to give answers about the rise of the carbons and some background on Coleman. Book three is set up nicely by the end of Carbon, which I already have, so I'm immediately moving onto it next!
Audio: 5/5 stars Narrated by: Chelsea Stephens and Steve Campbell Length: 8 hrs and 55 mins
These are the same narrators as book one, and again, I was impressed with their narrations. As I said in my review of book one, both Chelsea Stephens and Steve Campbell are easy to listen to and able to give each character their unique voice. I'm happy to see they narrate the next one as well.
This book was given to me for free at my request, and I provided this voluntary review.
Carbon was another page turner. While I did not find the action in this book to be as constant as in the first book--the author's writing style pulls readers into the storyline and the character's lives and just holds them there! I didn't read this one in one sitting like I did the first--but, would still call it a page turner that is tough to put down. As with the first book, the reader can expect the unexpected and enough twists and turns to hold interest and draw them toward the 3rd book of the series (expected next year).
The Watcher Series is a true series. Sometimes, you can begin a series with any book of the series and still feel connected to the characters and follow the series. That is definitely not the case with this series. Eversley's writing style does not really refresh the readers' memory of past events and relationships--instead; she launches readers into the new adventure. Plan to read the series from the beginning.
Eversley continues the writing style I loved from the first book. She continues to surprise readers and explain scenes and events without a lot of fanfare. Readers will get to know the characters and follow the action as it unfolds. Having said that; however, the author really does a nice job developing characters that readers will connect with (and love or hate) as well as well planned settings and scenes that draw readers in.
Would I recommend carbon? As I said in my last review, I loved The Hunger Games--and enjoyed both books of this series just as much. I didn't like this book as much at the beginning as I did the first--but, it really did pick up rather quickly and created the perfect bridge to book three. I highly recommend this book to dystopian fans--especially fans of sci-fi or dystopian novels with strong female leads. If you read Watchers; you must continue and read Carbon. Once you've read Carbon--you really have not choice but to wait for that next book. I look forward to continuing this series and reading more from this author.
I received an advance release copy of this book for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.
When the first book ended, I didn't waste any time and continued reading the sequel. I have to say that this book felt longer than the first. As you read my musings, you will know why.
The story started off where it ended in the first book. From there, it zoomed off but then slowed down a bit. The first half was slow. It was more emotion and character based than plot. And that's the reason for my lengthier thought. I am not saying that it was boring. On the contrary it was as interesting as the action. Only thing is that I felt it could have been shortened.
I loved reading more of Sawyer and her inner thoughts and feelings. I didn't see much of that in the previous book. So I was glad I had this chance to get in real touch with her. But I felt disappointed at the way the author introduced a triangle love story in here. I didn't expect it and I didn't like it much either. For the sake of the story, I was okay with it but then it's my personal opinion. It didn't feel right. But situation wise and plot wise, the twist it had given the story felt right.
The mysterious twists and turns in the plot had not been lost in it. There were few surprises which kept me engrossed. I don't want to spoil it so I am not taking any names. But I loved the return of the one-who-will-not-be-named-in-my-musings. Phew! that's long and no it's not in connection with Harry Potter.
The second half fulfilled my action quota and it was fast, literally. I didn't have any time to react at all and the ending has to be mentioned. It was so unexpected and of course a cliffhanger. Where would we be without that kind of ends? Anyway right now I am awaiting the sequel impatiently. Inspite of the slow start, it hasn't lessened my interest in the series.
I received a free copy for reviewing purposes. This doesn't affect my review in any way and these are my own views.
My one line review : A character based story with less action and more introspection.
If your streets and the buildings around you were all empty, how would you react? It would be quite lonely, one would imagine–if you were one of the only humans left, fighting against robots for the survival of the human species? That is a lot of pressure for one person to have. Eversley continues this journey into a new world, one of science fiction and adventure which will pull readers in quickly and keep them hanging on every detail.
Leaving the world that she knew—the place that she called home—without the love of her life or any hope of surviving the carbon army waiting for their moment to strike. That sounds awful, but for Sawyer, this world is just hopeless. She is no longer human. She is alone in the world and still looked at as the savior of the human race. As her journey leads Sawyer and the remaining survivors to the United Isles, she slowly starts to piece together bits of herself. Unfortunately, Coleman is not yet finished toying with her—sending an unexpected visitor to destroy what is left of her sanity and diminish the fight left in her. With little to no expectations of winning this war, a beacon of light by way of a child princess and a cloaked elderly woman shed some insight into her destiny. Even if it is a tiny glimpse, Sawyer understands that her mission is not over and she also learns Coleman’s secret to his possible destruction.
Eversley has a superb story-line, filled with creativity, world-building, and originality. We’ve all heard and seen science fiction novels and movies, but Eversley brings a new twist to the fold. The pace is quick and steady from the beginning and carries through the entirety of the story. She provides that urgency to understand the depth of extinction the human race faces. Since this review compliments the audiobook, both narrators did fantastic work with voice relay. The scenes were vivid for the imagination and characters were credible. This is the second installment in the Watcher Series, so it is recommended that readers do read or listen through the first installment before diving into the second one. If you are interested in action and science fiction, this may a perfect fit.
An audiobook was provided to Turning Another Page by Audiobookworm Promotions and in no way affects the honesty of this review. We provide a five-star rating to Carbon by AJ Eversley.
I read Watcher, the first book in the Watcher series, a thrilling dystopian trilogy that I loved. Carbon is an excellent sequel to this first book that I enjoyed just as much, but how am I going to patiently wait for Book #3??
Carbon continues off where Watcher left off, and like most thrilling dystopian books I've read in the past (Hunger Games and Divergent) these books need to be read in order. They are not stand-alone novels. Although there are similarities to the Hunger Games in this trilogy: kick-ass female lead, love triangle and sadistic enemy, this trilogy truly stands on its own.
As in the first book, the author succeeds in immersing her readers in a dystopian world, with strong compelling characters battling complex issues and a plot that is well executed. Kenzie is now back under the control of Coleman, the enemy bent on ruling the world, and Max is on a journey with Sawyer as she learns to harness and deal with her new Carbon body. Sawyer is grieving and must learn to move on and Max plays a huge role in helping her do that but also in helping her prepare to take on Coleman.
Once again, this was a fast read for me. I flew through its pages, enjoying not only the suspenseful and action-packed scenes, but also the whole gamma of emotions that Sawyer goes through. She is strong, yet vulnerable; stuck, yet moving forward; torn between her feelings of grief, guilt and love, yet willing to face them onward. I have to say that I loved Chevy, Sawyer's dog. He was a great character, endearing and heroic. I loved the scenes with him in it.
Once again, the ending was satisfying but left us with a cliffhanger that has me eager for the next book. Thankfully, the author has a few novellas featuring the backstory of several characters that will keep me not only invested in this trilogy but happy to be continuing to read more of her work. AJ Eversley is an author to watch for, and I eagerly anticipate reading more of her work. Her books are now on my list of Best Reads for 2017.
Note: This is Book 2 in the series and you really do need to check out Book 1 before jumping into this story.
Sawyer Russo and her dog Chevy are sharing a small cabin in a sub as they hunt for the United Isles in hopes of finding an ally. Max Murphy is with her and she’s pretty irritated with him. Sawyer’s short fuse was starting to annoy everyone, including myself, by the time she reined it in. The first 3-4 hours of this book has a lot of teen angst and that made it a slow, dull start for me.
But then we get some action! Yay! The pace picks up and the story becomes a lot more interesting. Some new characters are introduced and they provide some new challenges for Sawyer, both good and bad. Max also grows as a character and becomes a much more integral part of the story.
I especially liked the scenes in the dark forest with dangerous beasts. These were some of the most exciting scenes. And I like that Sawyer is smart enough to leave her dog at home, unlike that time she took him on a mission where bullets were flying.
Coleman is still the main bad guy and we get to see his madness as he obsesses over Sawyer. Also Kenzie has been subverted and this is an especially hard blow to Sawyer. While the bad guys are still one dimensional, I feel they make worthy foes for Sawyer, helping drive the story forward.
The story does leave us on a bit of a cliff hanger, but Book 3 (Savior) is out, so no need to wait! 4/5 stars.
The Narration: Chelsea Stephens & Steve Campbell provide great narration for this story. Stephens is perfect for Sawyer and I like her snotty attitude for Max at the beginning of the story. Her male voices could use a touch more masculinity. Campbell does great with all the male voices, especially the maniacal Coleman. 4.5/5 stars.
I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by AJ Eversley. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
Sawyer is on her way to the United Isles with Max in search of an ally but also to train her new abilities as a carbon. There is also the fact that she still has her real body alive and waiting for her, but she does not now yet how to do that.
The story is gripping and the characters get more developed than in the previous book. Nevertheless, secondary characters still remain one dimensional. There is plenty of action and some violence in this book that worked well for me, but should be taken into account for people not into it.
As a Young Adult book, there is romance and it is important within the story. Things get confusing here for Sawyer, but part of her heart problems will be important for the outcome. I am not into the romantic aspect of this kind of books, but accept it as an important part taking into account the public for this.
The fact that they are the only people left in the world was well explained in the first book, but it seems to have lost strength in this one. It was mentioned two or three times in the book, and each time it caught me almost by surprise. I think it would have helped to have more descriptions of the world, and more worldbuilding in general. There is a clear conflict in this book, it is just that I lost somehow a bit of perspective.
The narration was again quite good, with Chelsea Stephens and Steve Campbell transmitting the characters emotions and bringing them to life. Both narrators did a fantastic job, but in a couple of moments, Chelsea Stephens did not clearly switch voices between character and narration. For the rest, it was an excellent experience for the listener.

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. I recently read Watcher, the first book in the series and I was excited to read this book because Watcher was so good.
Carbon picks up where Watcher left off. Sawyer is on a ship on the way to the United Isles to find out more about being a Carbon and breaking her tie to Coleman. He can control her and all Carbons when in close proximity but she's told there is someone who has broken the tie. She plans on learning how to do that so she can go after him to seek her revenge and to save the rest of humanity.
Max is sent with Sawyer to assist her but she doesn't like him at all. He's constantly teasing her and she's not in the mood. All she wants to do is grieve the loss of her friends and the love of her life. Eventually, she realizes that he's trying to help her let go so that she can do what she set out to do. As time goes on, Max grows on her. The relationship between the two becomes a close friendship and maybe more if she can let go of Kenzie. I liked this relationship because it's one that has grown over time and not "love at first sight."
There's not quite as much action in Carbon as there was in Watcher but it was still difficult to put down. It also contains heartbreak, betrayal, loyalty, and strong female characters. There are also some interesting revelations. It can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading Watcher first. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
In my review of the first book, Watcher, I mentioned that I thought the beginning was a bit slow-going and I also felt that way about this book. I do want to emphasize that the pacing didn’t affect my enjoyment of the story; it just caught my attention.
Much has happened in Sawyer’s world, both her own personal existence and the larger world in which she lives. Coming to terms with her life as one of the Carbons she used to hunt is difficult, to say the least, but she’s also learning—and testing—her new-found abilities as a Carbon. What is really intense is the change in her relationship to those who mean something to her and Kenzie’s painful response to her is certainly understandable. Interestingly, Sawyer has become more appealing, with a softer side, now that she has been torn away from everything she’s always known and that growth in her psyche is what I found to be most compelling about this episode. Now that she has a new raison d’etre, a new target if you will, the action is really picking up and I can’t wait to start the next book.
Narrators Chelsea Stephens and Steve Campbell continue to bring Sawyer and Kenzie, as well as other characters, to life and both have good tonations and pacing. They are a pleasure to listen to, so important in audiobook storytelling, and they are a large part of why I want to continue with the trilogy.
I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by AJ Eversley. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
Overall 5 out of 5 stars Performance 4 out of 5 stars Story 5 out of 5 stars
The Book Junkie Reads . . . Review of . . . CARBON (The Watcher, #2) . . . One exciting exploration in a world of copied humans, advanced humans, protective humans, a world like none we know of. That was book one of the series. And here in book two you feel no less connected to the character. Their struggles. Their battles and more. Once I got my hands on book two of this series, I did go back and listen to book one again. I felt an even deeper connection to the depths of the characters, their stories, their battle/struggles, and the world that was built around them. You still have the question on your brain whether or not this could this be the world to come? I was excited and allured by the depth and details of this world shared via first person POV. Carbon was filled with action, intensity, fantasy, intrigue and a well thought out world to go with it all. You will want to listen to this over again. I will do just that when the next, Savior, comes out.
The narration pair did it again for me. The trading off of the dual POV's and bringing in their own styles made you feel like you were experiencing the world first hand. These two voices together made an engaging listen feel like a vivid movie playing in your mind.
I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by AJ Eversley. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
Sawyer is now a Carbon and is under Coleman's control since he created her. Kenzie is also under Coleman's control, as his arm has part of Coleman's work in it. Sawyer travels to the United Isles with Max to try and find and find an ally, along with trying to heal her heart that was broken by Kenzie. The war for humanity continues, but it has just gotten more difficult as now the lines between human and Bot start to blur. Sawyer must come to terms with herself and her new powers, as she has become the one thing that she hates.
This story really amped up the character development. The action scenes were addictive, and Sawyer traveled a bit more in this book in my opinion. Sawyer really has to learn to accept herself but
My only real complaint was the inclusion of the love triangle within this novel. I didn't absolutely hate it, but I did not see the real point of having Sawyer fall in love so quickly after Kenzie. I won' t spoil anything, but the further I got into the story, the less sense it made to me. I was just really happy that the romance did not seem to COMPLETELY overtake the storyline. This was much appreciated.
I would recommend this trilogy to anyone looking for an in-depth YA dystopian novel.
I received this book for free, and this is my voluntary review.
Like its predecessor, Carbon, the sequel to Watcher, is a dystopian science-fiction novel set in the future, with most chapters narrated by the female protagonist, Sawyer, with occasional third-person chapters that again feature another important character, Kenzie. In the beginning, she indicates that she is largely unable to move on from death, and is sailing from Kuros to the United Isles. Throughout the story, Sawyer has a mostly love-hate relationship with Max Murray, son of Commander Murray, although he does occasionally attempt to comfort her aboard the ship where the action begins.
As mention, Kenzie returns, his scenes commencing in a space station, with a fortnight having elapsed since he fled Kuros. Kenzie’s superior Coleman interrogates a prisoner for location of a special girl, and suspects a traitor among his ranks. Also introduced early on is the leader of the United Isles, Princess Lena, who has a childlike appearance but is in reality much older. Overall, this is an enjoyable sequel, even if a tad derivative of other dystopian works, but those that enjoyed the first book in the series will most likely enjoy the second.

“Sometimes we can’t choose the people who are put into our lives, but we can choose to let them in.”
Sawyer Russo, Watcher extraordinaire is now something she has grown up hating: a Carbon. That means she has powers and, will learn how to control them. The one she loves died, her parents are gone, the world she knows is gone. She travels with Max and Chevy to the United Isles in search of other they can work with to bring down the megalomaniac Coleman.
As ugly and dark the world she knew was, the United Isles is a relatively peaceful place lead by Lena who protects it, until she can’t anymore. And the results aren’t as expected as this band of misfits tries to save humanity.
I did it again! Spent waaay too much time with my nose in this book which reminds me of adaptations of books like The Wizard of Oz, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and others like them. Good can always be found, even if it’s not staring you in the face. But how do you do that with corruption inside? High recommended 5/5

I’m really enjoying this series and I love most of these characters. I can appreciate a strong female character but because Sawyer is constantly putting herself in harms way and gets angry when someone else wants or needs to help, she is not one of my favorite characters. Time and time again she has needed the help but still believes she has to do this on her own. I get that’s how this story was written and that’s fine, it just gets old after a while. I have many other characters I love, such as Max & Tension!! I also really love the overall storyline and where it’s headed and I really excited about book 3 and what’s to come. The narration was very good. This is book 2 and continues to book 3. I recommend this book/series.
Once again, the narrators did a fantastic job with the characters. This was an okay story. I can't lie and say that I didn't expect it to be as good or even better than the first. However, when it came to Sawyer's character, I was a little disappointed. Everyone kept saying how many lives she saved but in this story she did little to nothing. In every battle she faced she got her tail kicked. She had power and I knew there would be a learning period, but I expected her to do more with it. There were surprises, suspense, romance, betrayal and more but there was nothing about this story that blew me away. The book ended with a major cliffhanger and I'm wanting to listen to the next story just to see how the series wraps up.
