This volume doubles down on last volume's stupid twist as it takes a ten-year jump in the story. Everything and everyone is mopey, and not even the fights are very interesting this time around.

But next volume is the last, and I have it on hand, so . . . Onward!

“Everybody but you wants you to be happy.”

TW: Gore, graphic depictions of violence, death, body horror, mentions of sexual abuse, allusions to incest, attempted suicide, madness, depression.

While the previous volume focused heavily on the deconstruction of Agni's character this volume starts to rebuild him and set him up for his final stance. And it's not a particularly painless process.

So near the end, we start to see the story in all its depth and colors starting to unveil the secrets that clouded our view of the point of it all. It's both, incredibly interesting and quite unsettling, as the full implications of our unreliable narrators are coming into focus. At the same time, we can start to see the story come back to the beginning making a very satisfying inversion of its original ideas.

From the beginning, the Fire Punch manga establishes itself as not one for the faint; however, after the first couple of volumes, it mellowed down, somewhat, until this volume. The unsettling elements, downright revolting, are back at full force quite ready to make their point come across with all its intensity and rawness.

“The pain was beyond imagining. My stomach acclimated to taking food. But I lost all sense of taste. I got better at faking smiles, because I could no longer emote. Everybody came to trust me. But I lost the ability to sleep. A child was born. But the sea froze over again.”

One of the most compelling aspects of the story it's its unreliable narrators and those aspects are quite strong now.

Neneto continues to be quite a fun character to have and her character development is really impressive. She really is a necessary presence in the story to act as a balance for everyone else.

That being said, what the final confrontation is shaping out to be is going to be quite interesting. While events have transpired very differently than I expected, they have all led to what looks like to be a great crescendo and a very ideological battle.

Agni, you can never know who you are by yourself. Snow is only regarded as white when it’s first observed by others, and perceived as cold when it’s first touched. Fire is understood to be red only when it’s first looked at by others, and by being touched it’s understood to bring heat and danger. Agni, when others look upon you and touch you, that’s when what you are can be understood. No matter how much you may think yourself to be firewood or pork or poultry, in our eyes, you’re none of these. When we look at you we’re filled with energy. When we touch you we feel your kindness. You first know who you are by other’s assessments of you.”

Let's be honest here. The LGBT stuff or the depression stuff that the writer has sprinkled in this series is utterly inconsequential in the end.

It was an interesting portrayal of mental health issues though. Guilt, suicidal tendencies, a bit of identity crisis too. But in the end, does it matter? Was the character able to exit his agony or was he just thrown further into it?

Not your typical hero

I love how the author always keeps you on the edge never knowing how the story will go. You believe you have a character figured out, then bam, and another curve ball. I love it and you will too.

5/5 estrellas.

Want to give it 5 stars, love the series and love what this book does, but it a little too slow for me to give it a perfect score. Am really excited to see how the series ends, though!

A LOT has changed and certain characters I loved have more or less exited the story, so I spent a decent chunk of this adjusting to the new status quo. Very much a transitional volume, but by the last few chapters I found myself really intrigued by this new direction. This series is a mess but such a compelling one. It's as confusing and weird and deeply uncomfortable as ever though.

Good volume. Things hit a boiling point once again, as they seem to do every volume. This time, however, I think the cycle has been broken and things are coming together towards a conclusion.

This is a review of the entire series.

One day, a miracle happened. A new breed of children called gifted ones were born into the world, each with their own bizarre powers. In the distant past, an evil gifted one known as the Ice Witch unleashed a never-ending blizzard upon the world which led to a new ice age and the near-extinction of all life on Earth. Humanity returns to their primal nature, surviving only by cannibalizing, pillaging and enslaving each other.

Agni and Luna are orphaned siblings, gifted ones with the power of regeneration. They can regrow any limb they lose and heal from any injury. Agni's powers are nearly unlimited while Luna requires much more recovery time. Their fellow villagers take advantage of this by repeatedly chopping off their limbs and cooking them over a fire for daily nourishment. They're treated like fuel and life is bleak for the brother and sister, but they find comfort in surviving together.

That all changes when an army of wicked gifted ones raid their village for slaves and resources, only to misinterpret them as maniacal savages who torture and cannibalize their own people. They burn the entire village down along with everyone who lives there. Luna's powers are too weak to fully resist the might of the flames, leaving Agni the only survivor of the massacre. His gift becomes a curse, as the flames that consume his body can only be extinguished upon death, which his unlimited regenerative powers prevent. Unable to die, he becomes a walking inferno that's in constant agony of being devoured by fire. With nothing but pain and hatred consuming him, he turns his fiery rage into a weapon to take revenge on the ones who took his sister away and the Ice Witch that caused the destruction of the world.

Fire Punch is an insanely edgy dystopian thriller with a unique ice age setting. The first volume alone contains torture, cannibalism, incest, extreme child abuse, genocide, slavery and just about every other nightmarish thing you can imagine. Most of the disturbing content is purely for shock value, along with the characters all being very over-the-top twisted. Agni is your typical edgelord antihero, there's a wannabe film maker girl who likes to record real murder and tragedies for her own entertainment, there's cultists who worship fire, constant gore and death all over the place, it's wild and shocking all the way through.

It's the type of series you read just to see how weird, disturbing and shocking it can get. It's definitely not for everyone, only fans of extreme shock horror would probably find any enjoyment from it. The plot and characters are passable, but neither have much depth to them. It's still entertaining for the shock-value alone and the entire second half of the series reaches levels of absurdity that I can't even begin to properly describe. I honestly have no idea what the hell happened because it was so ridiculous, surreal and just barely coherent.

That's Fire Punch in a nutshell. It's edgy and absurd for no reason, but it's so weird, gruesome and over-the-top that it still manages to be entertaining so long as you have a strong stomach and a dark sense of humor.

Salut!

Quand Agni demande pourquoi, Luna l’embrasse.

Un manga assez long, d’ailleurs. 213 pages.

« A part toi-même…
Tout le monde ici souhaite ton bonheur. »

"Lower your fist already, Agni! Everybody but you...wants you to be happy."

Agni continue to live with Judah, Tena, and others until the main plot comes crashing into their lives again in the form of the Ice Witch and her new faction. She still hasn't given up on her plan to use Judah to warm the world. In the ensuing chaos, Agni's home is destroyed and Judah is taken. Agni decides to go after Judah and rescue her, even if it means giving up on everything he's gained...and everything he is.

Chapters 69 and 70 are what truly elevate this volume to 4.5/5 stars for me. The volume as a whole is pretty good, but it's those two consecutive chapters that really do the heavy lifting. Fujimoto is a master of using identical and repetitive panels to convey feelings and thoughts and space and time passing in a single moment. And he uses this skill to great effect. It really captures Agni's mental state as he is once again engulfed in Doma's never ending flames.

Agni finally comes to a decision about who he wants to be, ending the torment of others deciding for him. And through Fujimoto's paneling, both Agni and the readers understand the gravity of what he's about to do.
