Shinobu Ohtaka (大高 忍, born May 9, 1983 Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese manga artist. She is best known for the creation of the manga series Sumomomo Momomo and more recently, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic.
And after I read all those volumes, I don't like this. It lost the charm that it had at the beginning as often happens with manga. If I feel like it's the same series in the end as it was in it's beginning, I know the stuff is good. This... it lost everything it had at the beginning and turned quite boring turning to stuff about destiny, dreams, world peace and all those important issues with the sense of urgency: I have to put the most of these ideas in these last chapters. Also, this action with great (extreme) magic and all those flashs and the "we will do it together" was the usual stuff of shonen genre. And it's boring to me. It's like when you wach a fight and in some moment don't know anymore who is wining because you are in the back seat and must believe what others are telling you is happening. Chaotic, best way to describe the end of this manga.
Not sure about real spoilers but feel alert and don’t read if you haven’t finiahed it yet because it’s a small personal review about Magi.
Those 4/5 stars is how I feel about the whole story. I don‘t know how I should put it but first I watched the anime and was blown away from it. Then I watched sinbad spin-off and didn‘t want to wait a lifetime when the anime continues some day so I started reading the manga. I really enjoyed the beginning up until this stuff with solomon and so on. For my taste it was way to long and confusing. The stuff with Judar and Hakuryuu I kind of liked but also was confused by it. Those teo are some of my faves in this serie. But then the whole stuff with years later and sinbad and his god stuff and so on made not always sense to me and annoyed me kind of. It was nothing like how it actually started and was a bit to long and lots of blabla. When Alibaba was starting his company and helping kou I was totally fine with that but when Sinbad entered this palace I was like what the actual fuck... I don‘t really get the direction Shinobu Ohtaka was going with that story. But well the part when the 4 fought against him in the palace I was hyped again. Final fight was also a bit strange... but well the final chapter with after two months was a bit short for me... like there should be something more like this as an afterlife :/
All in all I was really entertained by this series and enjoyed this universe. I will also continue with sinbad stories because I wanna know how he became the man he was in Magi. Also I had like the feeling some characters didn‘t got a big chance for the reader to get to know them really. Also wanna know Judar‘s real name. I have to let the story sink in and to think about :)

And so, after a year of reading, it's finally over. What a series. This took a spot in my 3 favorite manga of all time. And the ending felt really fitting in a "everything comes full circle" sort of way. Whatever everyone else says, I feel like the series held true to the message and story it had from the very first arc. And ended in a spectacular way. Sometimes the "Friends we made along the way" ending can be cliche, but here I think it really fit.
after a very long deliberation and having doubts day and night, coming from a person who has read this series 3 times in a lifetime, I've finally come to a conclusion of rating Magi : The Labyrinth of Magic, with 3/5.
*tears* i know. i did say that this series was one of the pioneers of being one of my favourite series ever, and regardless of all of its flaws, I will still consider it one. I literally grew with this series, well at least, in my adolescent years. This review will be my final step, i guess, of actually critically reviewing a series dear to my heart.
first of all, i definitely still think this series seriously has one of the best concepts of any shounen I've ever come across, at least until now in my opinion. This series is heavily inspired by the 1001 Arabian nights story and has a lot of aspects that are clearly inspired by Arabic culture.
the good stuff (read this if you're interested to read/watch magi!) : - the characters, and the diverse designs, races, and personalities! - world building is very interesting - djinns, metal vessels, household vessels, and so on, basically how power works in this world is, to me, very interesting and overall wild, to be honest. the designs of the weapons, and the djinn equips are ALL SO COOL - plot wise, a lot of arcs was to me was very good and well written - this story gets real dark starting in the middle of the series so be aware, it does starts off very vanilla and family-friendly, but once we get into the deep, real stuff of the world of Magi, the philosophy about life, class (the rich and poor business), war, different perspective in ruling, conspiricies about god (i made it bold because it's something i'd like to talk about in detail) i just think it's a very different take in shounen especially at that time, and I LOVE IT - IT IS HELLA FUNNY. LIKE, INCURABLY FUNNY. I LAUGH SO MUCH WHEN I READ THE SERIES. THE COMEDIC PLACEMENTS ARE GENIUS, ISTG - the art style overall can be very simple, but when it gets shit done, the art looks really good and detailed. sometimes even scary, in terms of the use of expressions in the characters. - the relationship between characters even if they want to kill each other or care for each other just makes your heart feel warm - lots of emotional stuff that actually made me tear up and just scream "wholesome!" through the pages.
now, lemme just rant about stuff i just find, regretful about this series :
reminder, ALL of these are spoilers, so just be aware ;)
1. Problems with pacing you'd think i'd start with the last arc, huh? lol nope, not yet. I want to talk about the pacing first. i think that Ohtaka-sensei has a knack of preparing us for climatic scenes in an arc and when it's gettting so good, then the chapter just cuts (not literally) and then, 6 months later. 2 years later. a month later. listen, I have no qualms of time skips, it does make it interesting how we'd look at the characters and find change in attitude, skill, and all that stuff after the years. BUT, it's a bit sad that the story really doesn't provide extra content for readers to get to know what the characters have been doing prior to timeskip rather than just explain it through the narrator, or sometimes in the omake. I think it would've been better to include them as fillers in the story even if it's a little boring to some, but at least it will give contents so readers can get attached to the character, can understand their drive in the story more, and so on.
other than timeskips, I just think that pacing between arcs are just a little bit eh and wasteful and would've been better if it's longer and has more fillers before preparing for the next big arc. We didn't get context on what Alibaba has done in Reim aside from the narration of him practicing with the Fanalis corps, no context to Morgiana and Yunan's adventure in the Great Rift, NO EXPLANATIONS at all behind Hakuryuu and Judar on the time where they've been gone in the story to their next appearance before overtaking the Kou Empire, and many others that are just sad that they've never been explored more in the main storyline.
2. Waste of Character Depth Alibaba is by far my favourite character in this series. cliche? sure, whatever. but legit, he's an amazing character, alright. BUT. again, he is somewhat underrated in terms of role and exposure in the story itself. The last arc basically rushed his character arc (well, the whole cast's realization of Alibaba too anyways were just rushed like it wasn't crucial at all) and made him the centre of the arc and then abolishes it, not that he went rouge or anything, but just unimportant. He just feels unimportant to me the way I see it in the story, even until the end, or maybe that's the story telling's fault. i don't know.
Judar and Hakuryuu too. Lack of character depth. I like them both, obviously, and also detest them too, but we've never really gotten more reason as to why. Judar's past were only shows through Solomon's Wisdom and that was like, what, 1-2 pages? and Hakuryuu sure got a whole sub-arc for himself, but after the clash between him, Judar and Aladdin and Alibaba? Why did the author never gave more details on what he has done, what therapy he has gone through to realize his mistakes and all of that?
Only Aladdin got, like, subpar proper character depth that is memorable. and maybe Sinbad, but the guy got a whole spin-off for himself so it's understandable.
other than that, everybody got decent-ish character depth, and I don't have a specific issue with any of them.
3. Questions. QUESTIONS. -there are so many questions to why the author decided to just end it like that. was it forced? was that ending the best that they came up with or is there an issue with the serialization that they has to realize it rushed and be done with it after that? like, what's up?
- wtf happen to my ships in the end? hello? Aladdin and Kogyouku potential? Sharrkan and Yamuraiha? Spartos and maybe Pisti? what happens to Sinbad and what will happen?
4. THE LAST ARC (+ THE ENDING) this is gonna be ... long.
overall, it wasn't technically a bad arc. was it the worst for me? no. was it subpar? yes. it was disappointing, definitely. After the first to the death against the edge-lords, I cannot believe they just skipped right ahead to a TIME SKIP. a goddamn time skip. for a final arc. unbelievable. from there, I already felt hesitant because I was so scared they would butcher it.
well, they kinda did. Not that I completely hate it, the ending was,... ok, but really, every fandom must feel this especially if you're a long time fan. It wasn't as good as my expectations and it could've been 10x better.
the whole arc felt like a fever dream. not only it is less that 100 chapters, for a FINAL ARC, it was rushed until the end. dialogues were rushed, the fight was ok but really it's more than anything, a talk no jutsu fest. Alibaba coming back made everything messy for Sinbad and that whole part of the arc was entertaining because finally we can see Sinbad go bat shit crazy and my boy Alibaba Saluja was thriving. The whole concept of the arc and how it can be written on paper really is lit and amazing, but the execution is ... questionable. A final arc should at least have +30 chapters, no? I mean, for certain genres or stories it doesn't have, too, of course .. but considering magi and how the story had developed until now, it should have been longer than this. And that's just one thing.
the final chapter was in anyways, weird. the previous chapter, we got this whole chaotic chapter where everything was reaching a climax, and then the chapter just ends. and then, TIME SKIP. A FREAKING. TIME SKIP. AGAIN. WHY. no explanations, just a small heartfelt chapter that makes no sense compared to the last one, where it's just Alibaba cruising to the 'new world' being all depressed because they postponed his wedding with Morgiana. What happened after the whole Magi and Djinn, King vessels are gone? The chapter only showed Drakon where he got his real human form back (he looks good btw but wbk) and all of the other characters doing their business, but it was so short it felt like a fever dream.
everything about the final arc felt like a messy fever dream. i don't know how to explain it in a better way without getting mad myself.
on a final note, this final manga volume looks adorable and really makes me happy that at least it showcases all of the characters in the cover.
Exactly what I was expecting and this sucks hard. I know I said I didn't have any hopes for the ending but this is worse than I expected. The author combined all cliche shounen elements into one volume: the power of friendship, the characters appearing out of nowhere to save the day, talk no jutsu, an overpowered protagonist who is saved by the plot armor all the time (Alibaba), happy ending that makes no sense and couple others.
I really liked the anime (both Magi and Sinbad no Bouken) and also the first couple of chapters of the manga. The last couple of volumes were total mess. It was total chaos with no one understanding what is going on. I am very sad how this series turned out because I really liked it in the beginning. Well, now I don't want people to animate the series. I can remember the good scenes in the anime and that's it. 37 volume series is considered long and I probably would not suggest to anyone. If you are still curious go watch the anime and don't touch the manga. I am surprised to say this but it is the truth. People who give 4 or 5 stars to last couple of chapters must have read something entirely different! I'm very disappointed Magi!
Honestly I also fell in love with the anime and wanted to see if there was anything else to the rest of the story and gladly there was. The beginning was amazing up until it started reaching the point of dreams, fate, gods and other dimensions it just started getting a little to complicated and jumbled to say. There were some good parts but if you ask me to sum up everything after the ku arc I would do a very shit job.
Yet this still has a good place in my heart and is worth the read.
I love this series so much. The characters are wonderful, the plot is intriguing and the art is beautiful. I wish there was more wedding and post war scenes. But I am happy with the conclusion. Jus wondering where a certain someone is…
It's hard for me to give magi bad score even tho The final arc is so abrupt and messy. So let's talk about why I PUT THIS IN MY BIAS LIST
-I love the trio, I feel Aladdin is the most fun clear headed character I've ever seen, without fog in his head that shouting kindness in any way. And oh Alibaba my cunning bullied boi, my husbando even not the most dazzling man in manga, His character, hw he accept failure and how he refuse to accept one way thinking is my fav. The girls, I love them all despite the shitty less screen time than the boys -ITS GENRE, YESSS MIDDLEA EASTERN FANTASY!!! It is a really big niche that I wish Ohtaka could expand more before moving too fast in time skip:( I don't know why she's pressed to finish such manga so that the philosophical talk got inconsistent... like I have been pumped to a dimension breaking and then she DECIDED TO FINISH IT IN THE MOST CLICHE WAY OF BATTLE -GREYYY STORY!!!! Yasss despite the main trio, other political figure in magiverse is very grey and we see how they try to justify their action. And no, magi give the consequence of their greed and false delusion I might be angry about the whole al Thamen thing towards the end, as after Hakuryuu managed to beat Gyokuen and Aladdin beating Arba, they're nowhere on the screen However I would REALLY LOVE ARBA type as villain. Yeah it is THIS PSYCHOTIC EXTREME FANATIC OF RELIGION. Why do ppl are saying she's bland? Can't you meet how religious extremist with psychotic drug? They're source of conflict, crazy crazy conflict. It must be Western ppl who cannot grasp that this kind of chara is VERY REAL.... -DRAWING STYLE, THE GUYS ARE SO HOT WITH THOSE DAMN SMILE.....!!! And HOW OHTAKA PUT GORE, LUNATIC EXPRESSION IS TOP NOTCH. Oh yeah not to mention how she's so detil except during the Kou civil war, that's way too messy girl -Oh yeah THEOLOGY AND PHILOSOPHICAL DISCUSSION IN MANGA!!! Never been having a manga thinking God literally like... it's not the part of action on killing God but the thought unwrapping around it! How it's hideous and what's the turn of fate is actually Th politic and many issues are raised interesting enough in magi, esp magnodstadt arc.... I also love the world building plus flushy romance of Alma torran arc, that arc was a pinnacle! By the way Aladdin vs Arba is crazy too, I can't stop fangirling on that. Must be one of the most op battle.
But well... there's so much yet I just want to appreciate this manga, even it ends horribly
That's it, I must be a dick sucker (despite Ohtaka is a she) of magi.... Yet it's still cannot overshadow its awesomeness . I really wish the ending could be rewritten as there's SO MUCH POTENTIAL

3.25 (Just adding this volume for conciseness on Goodreads despite having read from around Chapter 198/199 {vol. 20} years ago from where the anime left off in March 30, 2014. Picked up again this week, beginning where I left off with Chapter 331/332 {vol. 34}).
When I watched the anime years & years ago, I rated it 9/10 and the sequel 10/10 (on MyAnimeList), respectively. The anime ended somewhat prematurely compared to the manga and the continuation story stayed on my TBR + On-Hold for too long until now. So it's sad, but I guess I lost my deep love for the story when I viewed it as 'great' & a 'masterpiece'.
But after picking up where I left on, just in the manga, I still enjoyed the final arc for what I did remember. I like the characters, I like the direction the story went/ended & I like the tropes. Unfortunately, the lower rating despite my enjoyment for these three is simply a victim of not remembering a few characters to feel the emotional weight when they reappear to fight for the last time in this final arc against a detrimental destiny and huge big bad antagonist.
One thing I will never forget though: Gotta love Judar.
Here I am, at the end of the 37 volumes of Magi, so where do I begin. Firstly overall I enjoyed the series, the first half of the series was amazing, it built the world nicely along with having so many really good and interesting characters. Around volume 29 I believe was when the series for me started to take turns that I didn't expect but not necessarily a good thing in my eyes, yes I still enjoyed it to some degree but I just felt it was getting outlandish and a little confusing to follow in patches. The final volume felt like a nice way to end it, not how I would have liked to see it end but still pretty good (the ending was more of an opening one so one could interpret what comes next themselves, which I like but I wanted a more, this happened and they lived like this kind of ending)
Overall I can safely say that I will read this again one day and I'm super glad I finally read the series after wondering what happened after the end of the anime!
let me just say: this series broke me. i don't usually cry over fiction, but I DID. i remember reading it and then Aladdin says to Sinbad "but, you promised to stay with us!!" Sinbad: "no my presence holds every one back. its better that history record the lesson of one king holding all power" and that's where the tears started because i remember his path to all of this how he started out and how bad he messed up. and then it gets worse from there, with Drakon out of his household assimilation form and the seven generals all mourning him and rebuilding Sindria. it all made me sad and then there was the part with Cassim and Ali baba and arghh i was actually sobbing. all in all i think the series was amazing it got confusing in the end but other wise i loved it. i even thought the confusing part was fun, it gave me something to think about when i was bored in class

And just like that, the series is over. As the final volume, it was WAY better than most of this (long!) arc has been and a good ending.
Overall, after the Magnostadt arc (the best of the series), it all goes downhill, though the next mini-arc is fine I guess.
Ultimately the series got too smart for its own good. When it comes to the subject of fate & predestination (the main focus of the series), ask a Calvinist: there’s only so deep you can go without your head exploding & everything becoming senseless. Lol
Glad I finished though. One of my first animes. I’ve waited two years to read this volume since it was published in Japanese.
The real question is : what's the real Judar's name? 🤣🤣
I'm in love with this history with characters from a classic history, I'm in love with the universe and the message that the author gives in all manga. I think the end is ... Fast(? But if we think, that's a typically end in a shonen world. It's a little confusing to understand all the thoughts, the ideas, talking about gods and the principal about our destiny, so it's better to reread it to understand everything.
I'm satisfied with the history. With the end , I don't know yet 😅. Maybe it's important to read Sinbad's manga🤔.
I give the series a 3 over all some parts were great awesome even other parts were boring as hell and at some part I don't even know why I finished the series. It was a very random ride and I never really knew what objective they were aiming at first it was capturing dungeons then it changed again and again and again it strayed in many ways maybe that's why It was a difficult seires for me .I loved Alibaba :) and of course Aladdin. Check it out
This arc and ending are convoluted, messy, rushed and didn't feel like it fit the start of the manga. I am let down by how this ended, but I guess that's on me for deciding to read the series after the anime.
Unfortunately, I now don't feel like watching the Sinbad spin-off cause I don't like his character much anymore.
Also it seems everyones fav was Alibaba which I understand, however I loved Aladdin the most even if it felt like he was a side character for the last wee while.
I very much did read this in one sitting because I wanted this to end already. The final arc was probably one of the most boring, and Im really disappointed for something that was a favorite anime of mine when I was younger. The start was great, fun and a really interesting story. But it just ended up really...Boring. It gets two stars because its over with
This is simply my all time favorite I don’t think anything can compete with. The sheer amount of times I’ve read or watched this can’t even be considered healthy. I had a friend once tell me he watched Avatar the last Airbender over 20 times and at first I was like huh? But now I’m just like ohhh… yeahhh….
