Finding Tiger

Rate this book
The life of Atlas Green has been shaped by the blurred memory of his parents’ tragic disappearance, for which he blames himself. When Atlas meets the girl of his dreams, Isabel, and loses her phone number, his stand-in father, Gramps, pushes him to take an unlikely chance on love by traveling from Colorado to Spain to find Isabel, following clues in a guidebook she left behind. As Gramps succumbs to Alzheimer’s disease back home, Atlas must decide if he should return to Colorado or continue his search for Isabel. On this inspiring quest, Atlas learns to listen to his own inner whispers of truth while struggling to find the courage to follow his path. Finding Tiger teaches us all the value of following our own curiosity to the ends of the Earth and learning to believe in the magic of life once again.

This is the second book that I've read by Gabe Schirm but a different genre from his first book, Sunrises to Santiago. Whereas Sunrises was a non-fiction account of his own walk along the Camino De Santiago, Finding Tiger is a novel. Taking place primarily in Colorado, the book also moves to Spain for a portion of the story, showing the author's appreciation for the country.

The book follows Atlas, an early 30s barista who seems to be a bit aimless in his direction in life and often spends his weekends fishing in the mountains with his grandfather. His life is suddenly changed due to an encounter with a beautiful Spanish woman who suddenly makes his question everything he thought he knew about love and living life, leading him on an adventure after the woman of his dreams.

The author has crafted a story which shows how difficult it can sometimes be to say goodbye to the comfortable life we're living for the chance to experience something better.

Schirm is at his best we he provides his immersive descriptions of the locations. The author does a great job of setting the stage for the reader by vividly describing sights and smells from a wide variety of locations from abandoned mountain towns to vibrant urban European towns.

While the main character of the book isn't much of a romantic, the certainly is and crafts a story that pushes us to ask how much we'd be willing to change, or give-up, or risk to find someone or something that we love.
