The Appalachians are wild and dark in 1912. Garret just wants to keep his family alive, but as a young blacksmith, it's all he can do to put food on the table. His profession is dying, the town is being crushed under the heel of a timber baron, and livestock are beginning to die in gruesome and inexplicable ways. When the town physician is torn to pieces, Garret gets the blame, because no one wants to believe what really happened. Dr. Bentley was killed by something too large, too fast, and too vicious to be of this world. It kills Garret's Pa right in front of him. It takes the only people he loves to use as leverage. Then it gives him an impossible choice: either the love of his life dies, or he does something for which she will never forgive him.
I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway and had never read anything from Daniel Foster before. I had no idea what to expect, but that's what makes books the most fun.
From the get-go i was drawn in by the strangeness of the concepts. Not because of the happenings in the book so much as the point of view of the storytellers. At somewhere around 30% into the book, i couldn't put it down and only reluctantly did so when my eyes could no longer focus and my kindle was slipping from my hands. I woke up early and finished the book.
I'll admit it, i really didn't have a good idea of where things were going but i did spend a lot of time thinking about where they could go. That, to me, is the mark of a great read. When i am enveloped by the story to the point that it's in my thoughts during the course of everyday life.
I look forward to reading more of Mr Foster's books. Thank you for this one.
I received this from Goodreads and had no idea of what it was about. It was a horror novel, which I don’t normally read, but felt an obligation to do so. While it wasn’t my favorite, I have to give it merit for the writing which was excellent. It was very visual with the terror of this creatures attacks. I thought the characters were developed well. Sometimes it was hard to follow, with the change in timelines. I’m glad I gave it a chance, it’s worth the read if you’re into horror fiction.
I don't really know what to say about this story. It was very long, and most of the time I was utterly lost. Going back and forth from past to present day (in the book anyway) giving no clear explanation of what was going on. It rambled and roamed something about a boy changing back and forth into a wolf with some deep dark "creature" after him and making not a bit of sense. And when I finally reached the end (and that was only because if I start a book I finish it, good or bad) the Author implied there would be a sequel?? To what? I still have no idea what all that reading was about, to begin with.
I was really excited about the premise of this book! Ancient evil, werewolves, set on old Appalachia? Right up my alley!
But by God this book took 2 years to slog through. Yes, I kept stopping and restarting it, but still. TWO YEARS.
I get it, there is backstory. And it's sort of necessary to get the full picture, but boy did I want to rip my hair out at parts.
I waffled between 3 and 4 stars. This was honestly one of the hardest to rate books I have ever read. I ended up giving it 4 because it is well-written, it's an original take on the werewolf origin story, and overall I liked the book. I just think it could have used some editing.
Needless to say, Youngblood the wolf was my favorite character and he's a wolf! Garret Vilner, our protagonist has some screwed up background, but honestly, he was kind of annoying. He was an eh werewolf, and part of me wanted him to die. His love for Molly overshadowed the entire book, and some parts were him extolling all the best pieces of Molly and how wonderful she was. Of course, her parents were rich and above Garret the blacksmith.
Then there is Sarn, Garret's brother. We don't learn a lot about him other than Garret is very very protective of Sarn, especially when their mother gets violent.
To shorten all the backstory: Garret meets person that crawls out of kiln fire and said person gives Garret a wolfstrap. Garret becomes werewolf. Molly and Sarn kidnapped by evil creature thing. Garret fights to save his family.
Overall a pretty creepy and interesting book....just really, really long.
I won this book during a giveaway, so I felt like I owed the author something , otherwise I might have given up on this book.
The main plot is good overall but there were several factors that prevented it from living up to it's potential: - weird story structure. The narrative jumps around between journal entries and several characters points of view and at one point the narrative abruptly shifts several years ahead. - pacing felt off to me. The story really bogged down in the middle and I almost gave up as a result, thankfully things got a little more interesting in the 3rd act. - too much repetition. The protagonist Garrett spends way too much time brooding and complaining and, the most annoying part, obsessing over Molly. We never see any evidence of why these two should be so deeply in love, they just are, and it gets really boring to read so much about Garrett's inner thoughts.
Despite all this there were some interesting plot points (although the twist will become apparent to anyone paying attention) and I respect the authors creativity. I also liked that the book did not shy away from gory descriptions. I just feel like the book needed a harsher editor to chop away some of the dead weight like Garrett's inner monologue.
There is an amazing story of love and life in this book. It travels through different countries as well as time periods, and opens up a beautiful world in the Appalachian Mountains. The history can be a little disorganized, unless you pay attention to the dated journal entries, but they give a lot of background and feeling to the main story. There is a lot of emotion and some truly inspiring sequences that tell why the characters react to their situation the way they do.
Thank you Daniel for my copy of your book, I would still like to have it in hardback!
This book jumped all over the place. Journal entries, wolf point of view, human point of view. This characters thoughts and feelings for awhile then switch to another. I still am not sure what I read or what genre it even is supposed to be. I got a third of the way through before calling it quits because honestly I just don't care how it ends. Maybe if there wasn't do much "fluff" and it didn't drag on I would have been interested. As it was there was just too much to keep up with and I found myself bogged down and bored.
Hello, this was one heck of a story. Very, very well written and extremely captivating. Once it gets it books into you, it doesn't want to let go. Thanks.
I was expecting good things from this book. It did not deliver for me. I found the bouncing back and forth between the two stories highly annoying. I finished at the story with Charity and decided to read something else.
I found this book a little hard to follow in the beginning with the flip-flopping from a man's diary to a family in crisis, but once you got into the heart of the story you found that it is an enthralling hair-raising tale of a creature in torment and how a young man can change into a dire wolf will save the day. Not for the faint of heart, this tale might keep you up at night....
A well written character driven dark fantasy. Foster has a natural ability to bring characters and places to life and he does it with flair in this story about a young boy learning to be a man while fighting an evil force that has been haunting mankind throughout the ages. You can almost feel the pain and anguish that the characters are experiencing . The writing is on a level with such fantasy tales as 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings'. I would have liked to see more graphic details in the part where Charity's mother enters the cabin to find her daughter and what became of the 'doctor'. All in all though, a good read that will keep you awake at night. NOTE-Part 1 does not have an ending. It is a cliffhanger of magnanimous proportion and will require the second book to provide answers. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
