This was my second time through this compilation of messages from Amy Carmichael. It is organized in 40 days of readings, each one starting with a “thought for today,” that sums up the message, “wisdom from Scripture,” a passage from the Bible which relates to the message, “insights from Amy Carmichael,” a short excerpt taken from one of her books, followed by “questions to consider,” two questions to help the reader make the teaching personal to their own lives, and “A prayerful response,” a one-sentence prayer. The book is divided in 6 parts, each one beginning with a poem by Carmichael.

Amy Carmichael went to India in 1895 and became involved in helping Indian girls escape from temple prostitution, and providing a place called Dohnavur Fellowship for these girls to grow up. She never married and had her own children, but became “mother” to a multitude through her ministry. The last twenty years of her life she was bedridden due to health issues and died in 1951. She was a woman of strong faith and gifted in writing both prose and poetry. Most importantly, she was acquainted with loss and affliction and knew what it meant to cast her all upon the Lord and trust implicitly in His providential care through dark times.

I found these poems and readings to be very helpful.

Love this little book so much as a daily devotional. The Scripture passages and accompanying portions of Amy Carmichael's writings are extremely relevant to the life of the Christian today even though she was born in 1867. I've found so much encouragement from the depth of her faith and desire for sanctification through the many trials and sufferings she endured. I plan to read all of the books in this series on great Christians compiled by Judith Couchman.
