Yūki Tabata (Japanese: 田畠裕基, Hepburn: Tabata Yūki) is a Japanese manga artist.
After working as an assistant to Toshiaki Iwashiro, he created the one-shot Hungry Joker, which was later serialized as a full series. After its conclusion, he launched Black Clover.
Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.
Black Clover vol 13 totally takes Black Clover to a new level! I really have enjoyed Asta's story and growth so far. Asta is a great character, imperfect but with one great strength. Up until now he's clearly fought against evil, simply needing to sway the good in his allies to support the greater good. Now he's up against a real jerk!! And Xerx is the guy who is going to be a tough nut to crack for Asta. He's so amoral that I can't even imagine what our mangaka has up his sleeve to change this guy... I really enjoy how the story doesn't just repeat the route patterns that are already established with Asta but pits him against new challenges all the time!
The plot is basically the start of the Royal Knights exam. So the teams are made and the battles commenced. Asta has fits with Xerx the jerk, of course, and that was fascinating. Then we meet other captains and family members of characters we know. I won't give it away but it was fascinating! I love that I can keep everyone separate and clear in my mind even when we meet new people of learn more about ones that were only introduced before. It's a really linear plot... no surprises except for Xerx. It's a little shocking since we are used to more twists popping out but quite a solid start to a new story arc.
Xerx supplies all of the tension... That and the fact that you are naturally rooting for certain groups to pass up to the next level. And well there is Xerx. Hahahah he just can't help himself. I can see this guy being a favorite among readers because he is that guy who you believe will do almost anything just to get a rise. We don't understand his motives at this point so its just fun to sit back and watch him rile things up. I do feel it was a dasterdly cliff hanger to leave off on Yuno and Noelle's battle! I did so love how Yuno trusts Asta.
The art is so stellar... I say it in each review but it remains to be true. A picture is better than a thousand words... its true! Each frame tells us so much and I really feel like the character is someone I know and feel! Xerx is a great character design... you just know he's a jerk looking at him. It also makes you wonder if maybe he's a bad guy, lol.... which I'm sure is kind of the point of the design. I love the battle frames as well... I don't get confused with Black Clover vol 13 and I just love that as the excitement and action is still present in the art.
Black Clover vol 13 is the best volume yet! Asta has his work cut out for him winning over the dark and amoral Xerx the jerk and I can't wait to see what he does and says to win this guy over... if its even possible!? And there are plenty more battles until we learn who will become a part of the royal knights squad... including Yuno and Noelle's battles!!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension ⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

altro volume molto debole.
I really enjoyed this volume! Every shonen needs a tournament arc and this is a pretty good one. I appreciate the team aspect as it forces the characters to work with unlikely allies.
Some random notes that I took note of while reading: - reading the manga feels a bit bittersweet now with the news that the anime would end in March T^T - the Royal Knights Exam!! I'm as fired up as the characters! - I quite like Finral's new look... - I wanna punch Solid in the face. Though I'm also laughing wickedly, knowing what would happen to him in the next chapters BWAHAHAHA go Noelle! Show that jerkface who's the real deal! - I love Asta and Mimosa's teamwork - so many new characters! - lmao at the Wizard King's starry eyes xD He's overjoyed to see so much magic - Xerx (whose real name is Zora) is quite a jerk... but the kind that you couldn't help but kinda like? Lol. He's a very intriguing character - Noelle, Mimosa, and Finral should form a "people with asshole siblings" club - where there is food, there is Charmy. - I love Rill's picture magic. Also, he embodies the tortured artist stereotype lol - super proud of The Black Bulls. People used to belittle them, but now they're impressed with their skillz - Crying after reading the afterword, where the author talked about the anime finally starting T^T And now, it's ending soon...
Okay, but seriously, I am absolute trash for tournament arcs, and this one is no exception. Between the fun fights, the great character interactions, the conflicts between siblings and guild members, this is already a blast!
One moment that I loved is when Luck's team wins their fight and there's a panel where Luck and Rill are exclaiming how strong the fighters are. First off, I want to see these two square off SO FUCKING BADLY, but also I want these two to become friends. I think they would make excellent friends, considering how similar their backgrounds are, and their personalities mesh so well. Please, please let them be friends!
It was great seeing everyone improve from the last time we saw them, specifically with Mimosa, Klaus, and Magna. Mimosa especially has grown so much and is easily one of the most well-rounded magic knights I've seen. Klaus becoming physically and magically stronger was great as well. On top of that, seeing the extra team members work with each group was fun, especially Angel and Hamon. Kirsch is...incredibly special, and while I hate how fucking obnoxious and narcissistic he is, he has the skills to back it up, which makes him EVEN MORE INFURIATING.
Noelle is really showing her personal growth, having to go up against Solid and be reminded how is treatment of her. Despite this, she holds her head up high and even demands that she be the attacker. *sniff, sniffle* I'm just so proud!
I can't wait to see more of this arc! Loving this!
Damn. tournaments are fun. Just by the default. A showcase of everything there is to show in the universe. Different new people, new magic types... This is an enjoyable book as the start of a new arc! I am glad that it got better.
Straight from a hotspring episode (with some startling artwork <_<) to a tournament arc where everyone's casting tons of stupidly broken magic. Brother simply does not miss.
In this volume you see that there are a lot of people with scores to settle and their own challenges to overcome. I am interested to see how far Noelle will go to defeat her brother.

Yet again, another 5 star read for the Black Clover series. In this one, we begin trials for the Royal Knights exams, involving team battles of 3v3. The pairings and battles are interesting to say the least. Asta is grouped up with Mimosa and a mysterious Xerx of the purple orcas. Overall, again, a quick, easy and fun 5 stars, and can’t wait to move to book 14
New arc: I liked the new characters in this one and loving the tournament setting also you are now seeing most of the characters going all out which is great if you like action can't wait for the next part to this so we can learn more about some of the characters in the series
It was a pretty interesting volume overall. There are many characters and it is a bit complicated to follow everyone. Royal Knights selection exam begins and pretty much everyone fights each other. We can see how everyone has improved. This is also the volume in which Zora Ideale is introduced. His character design is absolutely beautiful. He also has a very interesting magic (ash trap magic). In general, I actually liked this book. It was full of non-stop action and fights.
Back to Black Clover! I keep hearing too much about this manga, so I've decided to pick it back up and have found that it was pretty easy to get back into it. Highlights: - As prep before the test, many of the characters go use a volcanic basin as a hot spring. Sides are divided by gender, and in a shocking turn, we get to see the ladies pretty much nude! Now American publishing being what it is, nipples and genitalia are erased, leading to some very interesting panels. LOL Funny Highlight? Yami wanting to take a group of guys to spy on the ladies. - The brackets are setup for the Royal Knights Selection Test. Asta gets paired on a team with Mimosa Vermillion and Xerx Lugner, a Vice-Captain who specializes in trap magic. Yuno is with Noelle and one of the Praying Mantis' En Ringard. - We see most of the first round, including huge power increases from Luck and Magna, but we end with the Yuno/Noelle/Ringard vs. Solid (Noelle's crappy attituded older brother)/Brint (Fire Magic from the Coral Peacocks)/Sandler (Sand Magic from the Golden Dawn) and Yuno saying "come at me with all you've got" after Brint and Sandler mock him for being favored by the Captain of the Golden Dawn.
Of course they ended with a cliffhanger... ugh.
Still great though. Love the new direction. Recommend.
Looking forward to getting into the next Volume soon!
One thing that is common to every shonen manga is the training arc or the exam arc (battle each other for ranks).
This volume is once again fast paced, there’s parts that I wish were more detailed and longer. The art is once again amazing, you can see that the mangaka definitely takes his time to the art work.
In this volume it is more focus on showcasing your power, skill, strategy and how well is your battle skills and it is really fun and exciting. We can see how strong the characters got and get to know and see more of their capabilities as a magic knights.
Xerc (Zora) , the youngest captain, Noelle and Fin’s little brother bothers me in this volume. In both good and bad reasons. I can definitely feel that the next volume where the real thing starts and I hope it wouldn’t felt rushed.
Ok so the fight/tournament arc in any series always gets me pumped. We get to see backstory for so many characters and I’m so excited to see more. I bet Luck and the Aqua Deer Captain are going to become good friends. I’m also excited to see more Finral backstory because he’s like my favorite character.
But let’s talk about the German named, Hisoka looking psycho on Asta’s team. His character gets under my skin (and Asta’s, which is the point). I don’t like him, sorry to say. Maybe things will get better once Asta fights in his next round (excited for that).
But what are the chances Asta loses like some “Deku yells at Todoroki” stuff. Will Yuno and Noelle win? (Probably and then Noelle will either feel bad or be really cocky).
The Magic Crystal Destruction Battle Tournament is the main attraction of this volume. By the progress of this volume, I feel like it will be at least 2 volumes to complete the tournament, or even more! But it is a break from the ongoing dramas even though I am sure we will see some undertones and other dramas. Yuki Tabata delivers an entertaining volume that runs quickly. I don’t know what to think and I am probably giving this volume the benefit of the doubt, as there does seem to be something missing, but you get to know more characters, their powers and even personalities more. Good stuff!
Things get tropey as the obligatory Hot Springs arc segues into the obligatory Tournament Arc.
This stuff's fine, but it feels a bit compressed given that each match takes like a chapter and that's it. That said, aside from the characters we're already acquainted with I'm not exactly invested in anyone else, so I suppose shooting through it is the best way to get back to the people we actually care about.
And the less said about the hot springs stuff, the better. There are some facets of Japanese media that you just have to grin and bear.

After dealing with the main story we take a break for school tournament The only plus is seeing all the different magic Other than that it is not moving forward And flower magic really !!!
Okay first off...I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THAT MUCH BOOB! I mean there’s almost NO censorship and this volume is rated for teens? Those pages were teen+ stuff, almost M rated! We also get a single shot of man butt too!
Alright I’m done. Now on to the actual story. Drumroll! It’s a .... TOURNAMENT ARC! With that stranger on the cover being a very suspicious new character. Not the most likable guy, but I must say I admire his strategic trap.
