Ende was one of the most popular and famous German authors of the 20th century, mostly due to the enormous success of his children's books. However, Ende was not strictly a children’s author, as he also wrote books for adults. Ende claimed, "It is for this child in me, and in all of us, that I tell my stories," and that "[my books are] for any child between 80 and 8 years" (qtd. Senick 95, 97). Ende’s writing could be described as a surreal mixture of reality and fantasy. The reader is often invited to take a more interactive role in the story, and the worlds in his books often mirror our reality, using fantasy to bring light to the problems of an increasingly technological modern society.
Ende was also known as a proponent of economic reform, and claimed to have had the concept of aging money in mind when writing Momo. He was interested in and influenced by anthroposophy.
Die unendliche Geschichte (The Neverending Story) is Ende's best known work. Other books include Momo and Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer (Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver). Michael Ende's works have been translated into more than 40 languages and sold more than 20 million copies, and have been adapted into motion pictures, stage plays, operas and audio books.
He died in Stuttgart of stomach cancer.

Die O-Töne und unbekannteren Gedichte und Prosa von Michael Ende war sehr interessant. Die Sprecher sind allesamt gut. Nur schade, dass so viel des Hörbuchs Ausschnitte aus den (auch zu erwerbenden) Hörbüchern der bekannten Werke enthielt (wenn es wenigstens andere Sprecher oder Ausschnitte aus (nicht mehr erhältlichen) Hörspielversionen gewesen wären). Daher einen Stern Abzug.

Michael Ende remains one of my favourite authors and I always find it saddening how profoundly misunderstood and/or dismissed he seems to have been by "proper" literary circles as "just" a children's lit writer when his works are so much more than that. So it was lovely to hear, in his own voice, some of his thoughts on genre literature, "acceptable" purposes of writing and the pressures of literary trends, which it seems to have cost him a lot to buck. Specifically his essay on why he wrote for children (spoiler alert: he didn't) was illuminating and put in his inimitably thoughtful, metaphor-rich style. The poetry was lovely too.
On the whole, though, at eleven hours this was a very dense collection and I struggled at times to get through it. It felt like they really scraped together every random audio scrap they could find and shoved in lots of filler too - I had not expected so many readings from existing books, for example; the quality of some of the older audio files was really bad; and some things, like an interview about his father's paintings, didn't feel like they belonged in there at all.

Besonders gut gefallen hat mir die Vielfalt von bekannten Auszügen aus Die Unendliche Geschichte und Momo über bisher Unveröffentlichtes hin zu Äußerungen Michael Endes über die Gemälde seines Vaters.
