praying to be saved by a man who can fly will get you killed. From the creator of THE AUTHORITY and PLANETARY comes the craziest and most horrifying superhero comic you've ever read! In the world of SUPERGOD, superhumans are the ultimate expression of the Messiah complex, and scientists can build Messiahs who will fly down from the skies to save the world. No-one thought about how they'd do it -- or even if they'd want to. So begins the apocalyptic tomorrow of SUPERGOD -- the story of how supermen killed us all and ended the world just because we wanted to be rescued by human-shaped things from beyond Science itself! Take every superhero comic ever published, shove them into a nuclear-powered blender, soak it in bad vodka and set the whole thing alight -- and SUPERGOD will crawl out and eat your brain!

The innately human desire to worship a higher power doesn’t usually come up in comic book pitch meetings, because mainstream media (the kind that is supposed to be commercial and sell the most copies) requires subjects and stories that are as inoffensive as possible. Fortunately for fans of so-called niche content like you and I, gentle reader, Supergod isn’t aimed at the world at large.
There are actually people on this planet who would find Supergod offensive, and I’m thankful that my humble web traffic doesn’t feature anyone who fits that description. Warren Ellis’ storytelling chops are on show, using Simon Reddin to narrate the story, smoking a joint while around him London burns. But being that we’re dealing with a subject as heady and divisive as religion, it only seems right that we’re taken to numerous sites around the planet, and even further out of our atmosphere into the known universe.
Wayward atheists looking for a fun ride through a world of fiction might be especially thrilled to pick up Supergod, but so would fans of politics. It’s arguable whether the storyline mirrors anything that’s currently taking place on our planet, but a keener eye might notice a thing or two between the panels that would bring a smile to any conspiracy theorist’s face. There are also the themes of morality and genetic manipulation that would place this book in the Mature Readers section of your favourite comic book seller.
Subjects like the ones I’ve highlighted above require someone with an elevated art game to really do them justice and Garrie Gastonn’s contributions belie a deliberate, painstaking effort to make the story come to life. For the purpose of this review, I’ve penned down my thoughts for this debut issue, but being that we’re all locked down during these hideous quarantine times I’m gonna hunker down and read the entire set cos it’s just that good.
