I never thought a manga largely focused around a high school friendship would become so close to my heart. Blue Flag is something simple yet incredible; I love these characters and their bonds more than I can say.
Taichi, Futaba and Toma are near perfect protagonists in my eyes. Their personalities are vastly different, yet together they manage to portray a seamlessly accurate dynamic of high school students and their shenanigans + struggles. The school sports festival plotline in this volume made me so happy, it reminded me of all the teams and clubs I had endless fun participating in!
It’s hard to say which of the first two volumes I preferred; I adore everything about this series so far, and picking favourites is already difficult (lord help me once I continue with the rest). I’m constantly awed by Kaito’s art; it’s particularly refined with crisp linework, which I prefer to sketch-like styles in mangas. I love the way Kaito’s character expressions—whether comedic or not—are portrayed. The emotion practically jumps through the page! I can’t wait to get my hands on volume three :D
The first half of this volume was a little slow, not gonna lie, I didn’t care too much about the sports 😅 but the second half!!!!! My heart was soaring. This is such a slow burn but I’m here for it!
Okay, the thing I want to say the most is HOLY SHIT THINGS SUDDENLY GOT REALLY TRAGIC AND I DID NOT SEE IT COMING I AM SHOOK
The other thing I want to say is that I liked the conversation between Masumi and Taichi about opposite sex friendships and what romantic love is. It is a very interesting and important topic that I hope continues to be explored (as well as the topic of same sex relationships).
Second volume of a series of sweet crushes and agonizing near-misses among a quadrangle of kids who are straight and/or gay and questioning what it means to be "in love" with each other. Masumi Futaba, Toma and Taichi, and cheer squad at a school sports festival. So much happens without words, with furtive glances, small smiles. How to communicate all these feelings?! But fun, sweet, relatable. Then there's a kind of cliff-hanger ending that I wasn't really prepared for, came out of nowhere. But I like all these kids.
Not as good as the first volume as the story stumbles around a bit, mostly poking around the edges of the big reveal from last time instead of addressing it directly. Also, the storytelling does not flow as smoothly, making me think I was missing panels or pages as it jumped around in the first few chapters. Eventually, it settled into the sports festival trope and plopped in a high-stakes cliffhanger out of nowhere.
I worry that the creator is either flailing to find a direction or is intent on treading water instead of progressing the storyline, but I'm still invested in where these characters and their tangle of crushes are going. And I already have the third volume on hand, so here we go!
Sometimes we wish we had been better, that we had taken better decisions. But, you see? Mistakes are important because they show us that we’re not what we’ve done, but what we’ve overcome.
This volume is focused on Taichi’s inner conflict: what does he want to do when he’s older? Will he go to college? And of course, other people’s love life is revolving around him, somehow. Actually he has an interesting conversation with Itachi about what it means to like someone of the opposite sex, but also someone from the same sex. It’s a nice way to question sexuality, desire and romantic love.
I think this manga has the right amount of drama, sweet moments and character development as one would expect from a slice of life. So far, Touma is my favorite character and he deserves the world! But I’m also aware that Taichi, Futaba and Itachi have their own problems, so it would be interesting to see if they can overcome them.
Some scenes and dialogues are really touching and it reminded me of my years in high school –all those bittersweet years when I often wondered about so many things that still have no answer for.
Anyway, this volume ends with a major cliff-hanger so be sure to have the next one near you, because you won’t be able to stay like that.
A variety of late high school students that all have their insecurities and backstory that are slowing being revealed. A bit slow on the story - I'm glad I grabbed all 8 volumes from my local library so I can keep reading. Each book <2 hours?
Really a sweet group, that all have crushes that might even align, but everyone has a shy naive side that keeps a hopeful tone constantly alive.
Back into the fray as everyone is inlove with everyone.
This volume doesn't feel like it progresses as much as I hoped yet it still remains fun. Lots of lolz moments between the cast and a heartfelt moment between two people who DON'T like each other spilling their feelings on the other two people. I enjoyed that portion a lot. I also really was caught by surprised at the end and hoping a certain character is okay. A 4 out of 5.
I needed to continue this series after winning the first volume on Twitter. And thankfully, a German publisher is releasing this... otherwise I would probably not have continued. Haha, sorry, 12.50 euro for one manga is just a bit too much for me. But the German one was 8 and that is a good price for me. This was a good volume again, loved seeing all the relationship lines (if that makes sense) between the characters, see them have fun together, eat ice cream, do fun activities (though I am not sure if they were all so happy with cheerleading :P), and more. I love how there is both seriousness and silliness. I love the art, I love the characters, and I am just rooting for everyone. I am normally not such a fan of love quartets, but it works quite well in this one. THAT ENDING. *shocked face*
No! They aren’t allowed to end the volume that way!! 😩
Another great volume! I love the spirit of this manga so much. Also, the art continues to be so beautiful and perfect for the tone. I love this series so much!
I didn’t think this was as good as the first volume, because it didn’t really do much about the first books reveal. It was never addressed directly but the topic kept getting brought up a bit. Also, the story did not flow that well, it felt like there were moments missing. But the second half really picked up the story especially the start of the sports festival. I really liked the ending where we learned more about Taichi. The last panel was shocking and really leaves the reader shocked and wondering if everyone will be okay. While the storyline of this wasn’t great, the character growth was really good.
Anyway, secondo volume molto molto bello.
Manga splendido e consigliatissimo!
This vol has already taken a kind of melancholy, bittersweet narrative tone which might put me off the series. I still really like the characters and overall think the writing is very effective, out I wish the humor and sweetness of book 1 would last farther into the series!
I didn’t feel this was quite as good as the first one, then that ending happened. Beyond the cliffhanger (which is rather savage even if you can be pretty assured of the outcome), the final pages rapidly alternate between joy to tragedy back to joy and then straight over to tragedy again for a gut punch of a last panel.
The worst part is that it all stems from Taichi’s attempt to take back some of his own poor decisions and regrets and grow as a person and I can’t see this not having a LOT of fallout in the coming volumes. That’s what we call good writing.
The rest of the book is a mix of introspection and typical school stuff. Futaba and Taichi get roped into doing the cheers for the sports festival and Futaba’s omnipresent anxiety nearly gets the best of her again. I feel bad because she’s trying her best, but she is the weakest of the main cast currently.
Taichi has some really heartfelt moments throughout (it’s not for nothing that Futaba is clearly the most comfortable around him - the band-aid scene is really cute) and we get some welcome development on Futaba’s friend Masumi as well - although I refuse to believe that Taichi is THAT dense during their conversation - who is not as one-note as she first seemed.
Art-wise, I still find it weird that everybody in the third year class (minus Taichi’s nerd clique, fine) looks tall and normal, while Futaba and Taichi both look like they represent the Lollipop Guild in comparison. It’s a strange choice.
And the fun and amusing bonus story could not be more awkwardly placed, being stuck right after that brutal ending. Oof.
Still, a very solid volume of this series. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you liked the first one.
Decided to take a break from all the recent shounen to finish this manga I had started forever ago.
The art is really fun, equal times endearing and funny. I also really love all of the characters and I hope to see all of them grow over the course of the story.
