Husks: The Second Book

Rate this book
Puck found a strange Chinese girl in a busted up research facility that shouldn't have been touched for the past sixty years.

That sort of things warrants asking some questions. Of course, it's rare that mysterious ageless science projects wander around for very long without being noticed.

Husks: The Second Book picks up and focuses on Pucks find in the old Chinese research facility. Puck is without a doubt a survivor and total witch with a capital B, who will do whatever is necessary to survive. She spends the first half of the book befriending a Chinese girl and molding her into a companion. That companion warms up to her and starts to hold her own in the latter half of the book. Puck goes through considerable expense, physically and financially, to protect whatever secret is held by this girl that makes her such a hot commodity. Nothing ever goes as planned and the ending of the book had me sitting up and saying what the heck!?

Mr. Fitzgerald does a great job of writing characters who I love to hate, or at least make me want to slap some sense into them. His ability to create someone who can draw such emotion is a testament to his writing. If you have any doubts about picking up and reading his books, please don’t. They are fantastic, even if the characters drive me nuts.

Puck has a job to do. Although, with talents like hers it seems she always does. This time is different though. She finds herself with a side-kick, one more interesting than Dr. Carl ever was.

This book was even better than the first, although the more I read of Fitzgerald's work, the more I find myself saying that. Eventually he's going to write a big flop - but this book isn't it.
